Book Description
Pro BizTalk 2006 is a high-end resource that is based on real feedback from BizTalk developers. Authors George Dunphy and Ahmed Metwally are well known within the BizTalk community, and here they cover topics not discussed in other books, like performance tuning, scalability, and administration. Advice for the Architect.......2007-04-23
The authors know what an architect needs to consider when designing and implementing a BizTalk 2006 solution. They wrote a readable, compact book packed with their wisdom. Not surprisingly, it does not cover every (most?) BizTalk feature.
My only beef with the book is the code - all VB.NET. ;-)
Excellent reference.......2007-03-10
This book expands on the introduction to orchestrations and other key BizTalk components given in the Foundations book. Personally I think that this combined with the Foundations book sets you up nicely to start doing some serious BizTalk work.
Pro BizTalk 2006 for the Novice and Expert.......2007-02-27
Every so often a book comes along which transcends the technology that it is intended to explain. If you are a BizTalk novice, this seminal work is for you. With a self-deprecating style, the authors guide you through the wide and deep integration waters. They tell you just enough so that you can be proficient and yet feel comfortable that you have chosen the correct course. What you might not know is that the authors are building a framework for you to develop the best solutions going forward. For the expert, the authors have redefined what it means to orchestrate the integration space and to use a product to its maximum utility and purpose. I support both small and enterprise BizTalk customers every day. I can't recommend this book enough!
A Beacon in a storm.......2007-01-09
With BizTalk2006 fairly fresh on the market there is not a lot of documentation out there, along with me being so new to BizTalk itself, this book is a great resource. Everything from the administration side of things to development. My seminar instructor also agreed. I strongly recommend this book for those getting into BizTalk2006.
The book every serious BizTalk developer must own.......2006-11-16
This book is an in-depth look into the BizTalk Server 2006 product. Although I use the product since years (back to BizTalk 2004), I realized that I still had things to learn from it, thanks to this book

Best Sharepoint book I own...and I own 5 of them!.......2007-09-19
I bought this book as it is a complete overview of every aspect of a Sharepoint 2007 implementation than any other book I have. It covers best practices for everything from what kind of site template to use to what are the best security methods for your SQL database. Very thorough and the best book on Sharepoint 2007 out there. It is in depth enough to get the job done but not so deep that there isn't room for the entire project plan of a Sharepoint implementation.
If you are like me and the ONLY resource in your company for installing, implementing, administering and rolling out Sharepoint, this is the book for you.
Excellent overall coverage of MOSS.......2007-06-27
Are you looking for one book that gives you an overall view of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and its possibilities? Michael Noel and Colin Spence have managed to include ideas that were not possible in the earliest MOSS books. The first books relied heavily on beta-versions and some things were not available for the first books.
In addition to covering administration and basic customization of MOSS, SharePoint 2007 Unleashed contains very good sections on planning and installing MOSS. It also covers how to use Office applications with SharePoint. I especially enjoyed the chapters about Exchange 2007 and Office Communications Server. Both being relatively new, information in a concentrated form is hard to come by and this book gives a good overview on what to consider. It helped us alot!
Each chapter ends with a Best Practices section that provides some very good information.
If you need one book that gives you good, concise information about SharePoint Server 2007; I recommend this book!
Good book for admins.......2007-06-23
SharePoint 2007 Unleashed is a great reference for SharePoint administrators. I found it to have a great balance of high level planning information as well as detailed information that can be used as a reference once you've got SharePoint installed. What I liked best about this book was the breadth of subjects it covered. Noel and Spence aren't just experts on SharePoint, but other disciples. And it shows. This book covers not only how to get the most out of SharePoint, but how to use SharePoint with Exchange, MOM, ISA, OCS, the Office clients and more. The icing on the cake is the backup and recovery chapter. It includes a great script that can be used in small installations to use STSADM to back up all the Site Colletions in the farm. Very nice.
As a SharePoint administrator and SharePoint MVP I highly recommend this book.
Thorough, informative, a must-have.......2007-06-18
As an experienced SharePoint I.T. Administrator, I found this book very informative with detailed information and "how tos" on the various capabilities of MOSS 2007. I thought that this book was well organized with the book's "lack of fluff" and getting directly to what MOSS 2007 can do and offer. The book starts out with the first chapter's general description of what will be covered in the book as well as the chapter number as to where these features will be discussed in more detail. After the Chapter 1 overview, the actual, in-depth discussion following is done. Through the new features described including features of document libraries, lists, sites, and how to leverage the workflow capabilities within a team site and within SharePoint Designer 2007 and other features within MOSS 2007, Enterprise Edition (Business Intelligence, Excel Services, Business Data Catalog, etc), the authors' extensive amount of technical expertise, knowledge and experience of the subject matter is quite obvious.
Not only does this book describe the features within a MOSS 2007 team site, this book contains in-depth information about how to effectively administer MOSS 2007 within I.T., including utilizing the SharePoint Central Administration tool. Also the integration between MOSS 2007 and Microsoft Office 2007, SharePoint Designer 2007 (formerly FrontPage), ISA Server 2006, Live Communication Server, and Exchange Server 2007 are discussed.
Looking to get up to speed quickly with learning about MOSS 2007, including its capabilities and its potential as a tool that can greatly help the productivity and collaboration within an enterprise, I found that this book delivers in providing that knowledge in a concise yet descriptive and thorough format.
If you are an experienced SharePoint 2003 Administrator, the authors provide an honest approach in describing the shortcomings and limitations of SharePoint 2003, and describe how MOSS 2007 improves those shortcomings. However, even though you may not have any background in the previous versions of SharePoint, the authors do mention that no prior experience is necessary and you will not be disappointed in discovering within this book as to how MOSS 2007 can be leveraged within your team at your company.
Whether you are a SharePoint I.T. Administrator who will be planning, installing and supporting MOSS 2007 at your company or if you are knowledge worker looking for a step-by-step guide on how to take full advantage of the capabilities of a MOSS 2007 team site, this book is the must-have reference guide and instruction manual that you will need to accomplish what you are looking for.
A must have for MOSS Administrators and Architects.......2007-06-04
Anyone who works with MOSS, or even WSS v3 should have this on the desk. The authors start with a good overview of what SharePoint is, what problems it was designed to solve, and how it does so. Then the authors go into the planning that should occur prior to beginning a deployment, (remember that with SharePoint the three most important issues in deploying and architecting are planning, planning, and planning), then into installing the system. Anyone planning to rollout a significant SharePoint deployment would do well to read and study the first section of this book. At almost 800 pages this book is quite weighty, but deservedly so.
The following sections go through the various parts of the product. Given the breadth of SharePoint it is hard to conceive of any one book that can cover the full gamut, however this one comes close. If I have any criticism of this book it is that there is not enough depth, there is little or no coverage of development topics, and there are parts where they say that something can be done, but go into no explanation as to who to do it, even if it is pointing in the right direction. The first two complaints are a bit unfair in that this is not a development book, and, again given the richness and depth of the product, there is no way that a single piece of literature can give all the details, even though this book comes as close as is humanly possible. The last is a very irritating thing to me. Often all I need to learn a new technology is a simple, Hello World type approach, getting some traction, then doing the research to get where I want to get to.
Other than that this book covers all the important areas such as Records Management, Search, Office integration, management of deployments, and on and on. With all l that is in this book, and minimum research, an administrator will have the information necessary to do most of what he or she needs to accomplish, as well as how to keep that system running at optimal levels.

Customer Reviews:
Good how-to reference, BAM and BRE can be addressed more.......2007-02-18
Though this book covers basics, it is a good reference book to learn what some of the real world scenarios are and how to solve them.
However, if you assume this a 1-2-3 type "recipes", you may find challenges in following the instructions. To name a few, just try out Recipe 5-2 from the Sample Chapter of this book, I wonder how many people can get it working. You will also need good enough of background to jump right into some topics such as BRE and BAM, or you will be left with a lot of "Why" and "How" while reading some talk-through descriptions (Yes, you are reading right, not step 1-2-3 at all). "Related Activities" in Recipe 9-1 is one of many examples.
You may be questioning yourself and try to look for sample codes/project download from the publisher Apress official site. You will be very disappointed how many key subjects out there. This may be the nature of the BizTalk implementation, unlike other subjects such as C# coding sample which author can just zip and ship the sample codes out for download.
Overall, this book is fine. To me, it seems this book came out rush. More proof-reading can make this book better.
Well balanced, provides insight in how things work.......2007-01-10
BizTalk 2006 Recipes is a refreshing book. Rather than re-organize the existing help, they have taken the time to address dozens and dozens of common scenarios and provided "recipes" for each of these.
This is information that you don't find in the help. Just like a cookbook, appetizers, breads, drinks, poultry, salads, etc., BizTalk 2006 Recipes uses the same paradigm, Schemas, Mapping, Messaging, Orchestrations, etc. For each "recipe," you have the problem you are trying to solve, the solution for the problem, and then best part, "How it Works," which explains the underpinnings of each of the topics. They pick both simple and advanced topics and it is structured to allow you to either go through the book end-to-end or to use it as a reference. I think this is a great compliment to the existing documentation and a handy reference for any BizTalk developer.
Good, but not complete.......2006-10-24
I find that the examples given in this book cover the basics well. There is nothing about the EDI subsystem or the Sharepoint Adapter.
Great for reference, great for learning BizTalk.......2006-10-05
This is a piece of the review I wrote on my blog (putting the URL would be against the policies here so I'm leaving it out).
The book format: It is a recipe book so is written in a "Problem, Solution, How it works" style format with each chapter being given an introductory page or two preface. This book will be a great one to have around as a reference book, but I have to say that I also enjoyed reading it cover to cover (well almost... honestly I skimmed chapter 10, this chapter probably could have been done away with and the contents moved to other chapters).
The book is fairly comprehensive in covering BizTalk soup to nuts; there is a chapter on Schemas, one on Business Rules engine (more on this one later in the post), one on BAM and one talking about HAT. The writing styles of the various authors were not too apparent, but rather fairly subtle; sometimes in code samples they were apparent however; one chapter has code that uses both hungarian notation on variables, but also on function parameters. That should be done away with in this persnickety developers opinion. I have to say that from still fairly green knowledge of BizTalk, it appears that at least some of the authors have implemented a fair amount of BT solutions in their careers; to me this was evidenced by the "NOTE" sections that were lusciously littered throughout the text that included well thought out pitfulls and other tips to assist in your BizTalk solutions. In my opinion the one chapter that stuck out (and obviously I could be wrong) as one that wasn't written from experience but rather written from a "I just learned this" kind of perspective was the business rules engine chapter 5 (which ironically is available for free download from Apress).
Overall, I would give this book 3 tivo thumbs up, 4.5 stars out of 5 rating. Get this book if you need assistance with BizTalk 2006.
Other side notes, the authors created a blog site just for the book, but thus far only posted one comment and apparently aren't interested in doing much blogging, I'd love to see that change.
One other note I forgot to include; there was a couple spots that made reference to BizTalk 2004; one of the spots was more of a "if you are used to doing it this way, here is what you will have to do now" kind of reference; I found that appropriate; the other one was "here is how to do it in 2004 and here is how to do it in 2006". That one the book could do without. I don't recall where in the book they were; but for the authors knowledge it was the first 2004 reference in the book that could go and the 2nd one could stay :) I gave them the full 5 stars since they are first to market; I think 4.5 stars would be an appropriate rating on this book. Great job to the authors!
Excellent Book!!!!.......2006-09-28
This is an excellent book for Biztalk, Only suggestion is read the Biztalk 2006 white paper from the Microsoft website before you read this book. The authors have presented the content in a very easy to understand manner, without beating around the bush.........

Nice Book!.......2007-04-10
Very clear understanding and good comprehension!
All chapters have screenshots that you can follow step by step with no worries...
A Quick and Handy Guide to Transactions.......2007-02-14
This book concentrates on the transactions you make in the Financial Accounting subset within SAP R/3. There have been several books on setting up the SAP system. This is the first I've seen on understanding just what happens when you make an entry into the system. This includes entries into: General Leder, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Asset Accounting.
The layout of this book is by individual transaction organized into five sections. This allows the reader to quickly find what he needs to know about any individual transaction. Example: If a vendor issues you a credit memo you need to make an entry into accounts payable that will reduce the amount you owe him. Under AP you will find a transaction: 'Post Vendor Credit Memo' with the transaction code of FB65. This leads you to page 157, where there is a complete description of this transaction including screen shots, what needs to be entered, what information gets entered by default, and various other information.
The SAP system is so big, and so complex that all possible transactions are not included, but instead the book covers those transactions that will be used day in and day out. This information is contained in other places, but in this book it is organized for quick and handy reference.

In depth.......2007-09-16
Great book. Really goes into detail. If you've read Essential Microsoft Operations Manager, you'll certainly be pleased with how this book expands on these concepts.
Should be required reading for anyone managing with MOM 2005.......2007-01-02
This is the book that bridges the gaps between product documentation, how the product works and how to use the product in a real world deployment.
As an avid MOM administrator, this is one of the rare books that is like having an experienced consultant with you to answer questions. MOM can be a complicated tool. Often people will be frustrated with attempting to deploy and manage using MOM. I highly recommend reading this book prior to deployment. The $60.00 price tag is nothing when compared to the hours you will spend tuning and attempting to understand MOM without it.
offers top level and fine grained control.......2006-12-22
The complexity of Microsoft Operations Manager is attested to by the sheer bulk of this book. Some readers must surely wonder why any text on any computer program can be so hefty? But to a large extent, MOM's complexity is a consequence of the complexity of systems administration of the Microsoft operating systems and the ancillary packages deployed on top of these, like SQL Server and Exchange. At tremendous effort, Microsoft has built up an entire ecosystem of packages and operating systems. And there are many books devoted to each component.
But MOM's remit is to offer an integrated top level, and yet fine-grained approach, to managing the entire offering. Typically, the reader of this book will be a sysadmin of one, and in fact usually several, corporate computers. If you just have a personal computer running a Microsoft operating system, you are unlikely to need MOM.
Readers from a unix background might recognise an analogy between MOM and IBM's SMIT. The latter was a GUI tool that ran on AIX (IBM's version of unix), and greatly eased the managing of the often intricate AIX commands. But SMIT only really dealt with running the operating system. MOM also offers control of those above-mentioned sundry packages atop the operating system. So MOM is far more complicated.
A quick measure of MOM's complexity is given in Chapter 14. Where MOM's intelligence is embedded in its rule sets. With the default rule set having over 5000 rules, that pertain to what is recommended (or not) for the platforms and applications. Strewth! Happy reading. :)

Book Description
What is Enterprise Resource Planning and why does it matter? Like The Goal, Why ERP? is a short novel about a manager in a furniture manufacturing business who is charged with learning about and implementing a new ERP system, SAP R/3. The story tells of his experience and provides a non-technical, non-programming introduction to the basic concepts and architecture of ERP systems.

Outstanding Introduction to the Enterprise Software Concept.......2005-09-07
I am a Professor in the Management Information Systems area and I use this book as a quick and relatively painless introduction for students who know absolutely nothing about the software that supports Integrated Business Systems. It is an excellent read for that purpose. It focuses on why Enterprise Systems are valuable for some companies, the dangers of blind adoption, the value and power of systems integration, and some of the costs associated with implementing these systems. Just as important, it does this in an interesting way. At least more interesting to my students, who are either dual majors in business administration and information systems or straight majors in some area of business administration. While the other reviewers are correct in their blistering reviews of the book from a technologist's perspective, the book is not written for technologists. As the title suggests, it is a primer and primers are written at the most elementary level.
I have not come across a better book for someone with no knowledge of Integrated Business Systems to learn quickly in 119 pages what Enterprise Systems are about.
REVIEW FOR STUDENTS.......2005-04-21
I read this book as a requirement for my Management Informations Systems class. While it is a dry read, I acknowlege that it was a noble effort to present the information in the form of a novel. Do not read this book if you are an expert on SAP or very familiar with ERP systems. This is little more than a text book put in the form of one large example. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.
Why ask why?.......2004-10-28
I picked up this little jewel hoping to learn something about SAP's R/3 product and believe me, it took some serious effort to plow my way through this loathsome tale. The Goal has been done to death by everyone, including Goldratt, and this book is a pale imitation of that classic novel. If you know absolutely nothing about MRP or ERP, then this book might be helpful. It does motivate the need for such systems and production controls in general. The book also has some screen shots of SAP's product, so at least you'll have some basic familiarity with that system before you see it on a workstation. I think I'd rather read the User's Guide to R/3 (or to my VCR) than read this book.
Why ERP? No, really, why ERP?.......2003-11-13
I wouldn't even make paper airplanes with this book - because they would suck too. When millions of books were burned in WWII, why did they miss this one?
Not a good read, pick up The Goal or Better Together instead.
This Book Sucks.......2003-11-13
Why ERP? Because I didn't have a choice as to read it or not. I'd rather take a bath in gasoline and light myself on fire than read this thing again.

Customer Reviews:
Installation guide.......2006-09-08
Professional Live Communications Server (LCS) is a great guide to the installation of LCS. It starts with an overview of the LCS architecture and gives some data about performance and scalability. It thouroughly explains the steps needed to prepare Active Directory and the deployment steps of LCS itself. The book's main shortcomings are:
- the lack of explanation about the processing that LCS does with SIP messages. The book never explains what LCS actually does. Only how to set it up.
- the lack of treatment of the server API that LCS provides. There is a very short mention of it at the start of the book, but it is not presented further.
If you need a book about deploying LCS, this is the book for you. If you need a book about LCS's technology and programmability, this book falls short.
LCS for Professional.......2006-08-20
This book is my new best tool to troubleshooting issues with LCS costumers! Thank you Joe Schurman! We can find quickly the most needed kind of information into a real world enviroment.
Best Regards to all.
Serge.
Yves Zouzouambe, Software Architect.......2006-07-12
A very well written book by Joe Schurman that explains in plain language the architecture of Microsoft Live Communications Server, Joe also walks the reader through real life scenarios for the deployment and configuration of LCS within a corporate environment. Great attention is paid to security which is a big concern to most companies deploying this technology; I would strongly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Real Time Communication in general and in LCS in particular. Joe's writing style is full of humor and makes reading this book a piece of cake.
Excellent LCS Reference.......2006-07-07
Well-written & very readable - and packed with immediately useful information on this interesting, emerging technology. Obviously written from a real-world 'been there done that' perspective - this will become your go-to LCS reference as you climb the learning curve to mastery.
Deploying LCS? Get this book..........2006-07-06
In typical fashion, Schurman demonstrates his in-depth knowledge of the product and takes the reader from start to finish of each technology included with LCS. If you're new to LCS, want to learn more on this unified communication technology, or simply want to know some secrets, this is a must-have book in your arsenal.
