Book Description
Like its predecessors, this introductory text teaches students the fundamental concepts of healthcare finance, including both financial management and accounting. It was developed to be used in clinical and health services administration programs, in which students are primarily trained for careers in provider organizations.
New to the third edition are coverage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the impact of cost structure on risk, a revised approach to variance analysis, and revenue.

Could be greatly improved.......2007-10-08
The problem with this book is it is written too much like a book and not like a textbook. It is nearly impossible to find the equations that are embedded in the text if you are trying to do a quick reference on a concept. In addition, the index is horrible which leaves me constantly googling concepts that I need for the case studies since you can never find them in the book. Also, I'm not really sure how the book distinguishes itself as "health care" there is little to no health care specifics as far as finance goes. In all reality it isn't a great book especially if it is for your first finance class and you're better off looking up academic journals for a the health care finance perspective.
Cram 101.......2007-05-30
This purchase was to help me with my course and go hand in hand with the engimatic book. However, it hit highlights but was not helpful to me in question answers and reviews for test. If you want a book with definiton's to help you , this is a 5 . If you want help with the Gapenski engima , its a 1.
Straight to the point and practical.......2007-02-07
Very good textbook: gives you all the necessary foundations for understanding the financial issues in healthcare.
A Great Intro Into Health Care Finance.......2000-12-01
As stated in the preface of the book, the goal of the book, "was to create a text that introduces students to the most important principles and applications of healthcare finance..." This book was an excellent introduction into finance. Not only did it explain accounting and financial terms and theories, it uses excellent examples of real life health care situations to further the reader's understanding of the topics. This was my first time exposed to finance of any type. At the end of the book, I felt like I had a firm understanding of the basics. Excellent book for beginners.
Superb textbook.......2000-11-30
As a cardiologist, I have used many textbooks over the years. I am now a hospital's Chief Medical Officer and am enrolled in an MHA program. Dr. Gapenski's book is one of the best-written textbooks I have ever used. It clearly and consisely discusses financial concepts as they apply to healthcare. He has the ability to make the most complex concepts easily understood.

Highly recommended.......2005-03-28
A very comprehensive and informative book, even though the examples are for the US it can be used and applied to other countries and systems. Gives a good grounding for financial understanding of healthcare entities. Highly recommend it to anyone looking interested in financial managment of health care organizations
Right to the point!.......2004-03-28
I found it very consice, and at the same time understandable with lots of examples, and practical. It is very well customized for health care organizations. It's worth your time and your money!
Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations.......2003-05-16
This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.

Book Description
Written in the same nontechnical and succinct approach as the previous editions, this book introduces nonfinancial managers to the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to manage cost effectively. Concise appendices review the key concepts in economics, accounting, and statistics for professionals without prerequisite knowledge. New material on the following topics:
The financial impact of patient safety
The public's concern about accounting integrity and healthcare's response
The financial implications of the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and
Modernization Act
The need for entitlement reform
The most recent projections on the financial status of the healthcare industry
The costs associated with uncompensated care and how those costs are either shifted to payers or absorbed in the facility's budget
Customer Reviews:
Two sides of a hospital coin........2005-10-30
When you're dealing with hospital finances it's true that you're dealing with a real two-headed sword. On the one sword, you have patient satisfaction to deal with. But on the other we all want to make money. It's why they're called "finances." This book explains all that and more, but from a patient's point of view this book is a flat one. Except for oncology departments, which is where this book sometimes has a heart. And not just a heart for money.
Professor review of book.......2000-10-23
Great book for the first course in a graduate health administration program where no prerequites are required. There is a workbook for the textbook to help verify understanding of concepts and principles. I would order it as well.
The book is also appropriate for health professionals who have been promoted into management positions and now need work with financial information.

Customer Reviews:
Essentials of Health Care Finance.......2007-09-10
This is a very difficult book to digest if you are not familiar with accounting concepts. This is not a beginner text! The text is written in a very broad context, however, the expectation in my class was to apply the broad concepts to detailed financial problems. This was difficult because Cleverly offerred few examples to help apply the difficult financial concepts. I found the text to be utterly frustrating!
Essentials of Health Care Finance.......2003-06-19
I bought the book of Essentials of Health Care Finance, it was delivered on time, however, some papers insided the book are very dirty, I can see the brown oily figure prints. I wish that I can exchange the book ...
Troubling Guide to Alien Territory.......2001-08-23
This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person. It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person. Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts. It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models.
This reader studied Cleverly's text as a requirement for a healthcare finance class. The text was frustrating as this reader attempted to "know" everything about healthcare finances; however, this is probably not the intent of the book. It does present a road into the foreign land of finances. It demands respect for another set of data and another language for interpreting that data. One does not master this data set at one pass, however.
Nevertheless, this reader did gain some new financial information. At the risk of being simplistic, but communicative; a listing of some of the concepts learned follows:
1. There are many users of financial information.
2. Financial information can guide the formation of programs.
3. Financial management is essential for successful healthcare organizations.
4. Various qualities of health care organization types.
5. How health care organizations make up for discouting and bad debt and capitated payments.
6. General principles of accounting and why they are important. Also that these principles still need to be explained, to be consistent, and to be clarified.
7. Overview of four main types of financial statements with a brief explanation of vaious line items.
8. That financial planning includes considering inflation before it happens, and for equipment etc. to break and wear out before it breaks or wears out.
9. That financial information can be better understood by comparing financial ratios of different line items and trends over time. There are national benchmarking ratios available and Cleverly gives some and tells how to get more.
10. That financial planning should be an orderly process in an organization.
11. There are different types of costs. Some stay the same, some are overhead types. Some are direct, some are hidden. Some can be controlled, some cannot.
12. Figuring out prices is a very complex process in healthcare. It is based on costs and payers. It must also include indirect costs and costs of future problems.
13. There is still stuff to learn . . . And this reader is still no expert.
Finally, after this MSN course and this text, this reader is more conversant with the financial landscape. It holds interest and it is understandable, after all.
Not for beginners.......2000-01-08
I have finished about 5 different chapters for a Masters degree course I am taking. This book is not for beginners! I am an RN and have been working in business for 10 years. The author assumes that you have had basic accounting and the terminology is unfamiliar. There are very few examples given so it is hard to take the information and see how it is really used. I have had to buy another book just so that I could understand this book.
Mr. Cleverley is the guru of healthcare finance.......1999-08-27
This book represents the foundation on which all healthcare organizations should examine their financial strength and management. While not for beginners, it provides a comprehensive overview of reporting and benchmarks that prove invaluable during the budgeting process and for financial control.

Customer Reviews:
Practically useless.......2006-05-19
Don't waste your money on this useless paperweight. I had to buy it for a college class, so I had no choice. The treatment of accounting is too superficial. It claims to give the reader a good grasp on balance sheets and income statements, but fails to adequately define or explain many of the terms used on actual corporate statements. The chapters on costing, and budgeting introduce some theory, but by the time you are finished, you still have no idea how to actually construct a budget. The financial chapters are superficial, and at the same time use statistical concepts that are not explained, leaving the unprepared student rubbing his or her head and wondering what the hell the discussion was about. On that note, the entire book suffers from the useage of terms and concepts that are either poorly explained or not explained at all. The book covers a good spectrum of financial subjects, but all are covered too poorly to be of any use to a real-world manager. The actual useful information in the book could probably be condensed to 10 pages. The rest is useless fluff that talks ABOUT the subjects without telling the student how to actually accomplish something. In short, the book gives little practical training and is heavy on theory, but the theory is superficial and incomplete, so the book is just about useless. I bought an inexpensive book on accounting and another on budgeting (about 150 pages each) that answered my questions and taught me the basics of how to accomplish those functions. I won't say which ones, as I don't want to be accused of representing those authors or publishers, but just know that almost any financial books you buy will be better than this one.

Book Description
Authors Santerre and Neun take a fresh contemporary approach to health economics. The writing style is lively and inviting to students that are intimidated by the term "economics." The authors use several real-world applications to make the economic theory more approachable to students. The central theme of Health Economics, 3e relates to the costs and benefits associated with various health care choices. Using this theme, the book covers the many changes that have taken place in the field of health care in both the public and private sectors.

This book is used in the CEBS course for health care economics. I was skeptical about ordering from an online source. The book was exactly the right book and arrived in perfect condition even sealed in the factory wrapper. The delivery was very quick. This is an outstanding way to get textbooks - no standing in line - book comes to the mailbox. All you have to do is start studying!
