Book Description
"Microsoft Office InfoPath represents a revolutionary leap in XML technologies and a new paradigm for gathering business-critical information. I am delighted that Scott Roberts and Hagen Green, two distinguished members of the InfoPath product team, decided to share their experience in this book."
--From the Foreword by Jean Paoli, cocreator of XML 1.0 and Microsoft Office InfoPath
Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007 offers breakthrough tools for gathering, managing, and integrating business-critical information, and creating efficient forms-driven processes. Two longtime members of Microsoft's InfoPath product team have written the first comprehensive, hands-on guide to building successful XML-based solutions with InfoPath 2007.
The book opens with a practical primer on the fundamentals of InfoPath form template design for information workers and application developers at all levels of experience. It then moves into advanced techniques for customizing, integrating, and extending form templates--with all the code examples and detail needed by professional developers.
Learn how to:
- Design form templates: create blank form templates, insert and customize controls, use advanced formatting, and construct and lay out views
- Work with data: start with XML data or schema, manually edit data sources, and understand design-time visuals
- Add custom business logic to forms, and integrate them with other applications
- Retrieve and query data from external data sources, including XML files, databases, SharePoint lists, Web services, and ADO.NET DataSets
- Submit and receive form data using ADO.NET
- Save, preview, and publish to e-mail, SharePoint, and more
- Build reusable components with template parts
- Create workflows with SharePoint and InfoPath E-Mail Forms
- Administer Forms Services and Web-enabled form templates
- Build advanced form templates using C# form code, custom controls, add-ins, and the new InfoPath 2007 managed object model
- Design form templates using Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO)
- Update, secure, and optimize your form templates

The InfoPath book to judge all other InfoPath books by.......2007-06-16
This is the first InfoPath book I have found answers every question I have had about InfoPath. The beauty of this book is although it does cover a lot of the technical side of InfoPath it also deals with some of the simpler solutions that are best achieved with just the InfoPath designer and declarative logic. With an easy to read style and lots of samples this book has become the definitive InfoPath resource in my technical library.
If you're just beginning with InfoPath this book is for you. If you've creating solutions with InfoPath since day one I'm still confident that this book would be a worthwhile investment.
Good job guys!
Great Detailed InfoPath 2007 Book .......2007-03-30
This book is a great narrative style resource for learning all of the elements and techniques in InfoPath 2007. The style of writing is a bit different as it has more of a reading focus than a reference focus. So if you are looking for solely a reference book you might want something different. The authors are TOP NOTCH though and do an excellent job.(Especially with Forms Services gotcha's/warnings) The demos/samples/sample forms they let you download from the Addison Wesley website are WELL WORTH THE EFFORT of getting and are a great learning tool.
A comprehensive resource for InfoPath and Forms Services 2007.......2007-03-05
This book was written by two Microsoft employees focused on InfoPath, and includes a foreword by InfoPath cocreator Jean Paoli. At ~1,200 pages, it's a timely and thorough resource for developers who need to understand InfoPath and Forms Services, including coverage of VSTA, VSTO, and other related topics. It's unsurprisingly a largely accentuate-the-positive book, but it also includes useful summaries of, for example, features that can be used in the InfoPath client but not in Forms Services.
XML with little or no programming.......2007-03-04
As XML has become the industry standard, Microsoft has increasingly oriented its Office suite to use it. The latest result is this enhanced InfoPath, in its 2007 incarnation. The book is divided into two parts. Each targeting a different audience.
The first part is aimed at a general purpose Office user, who is not assumed to be a programmer. It addresses what is a problem plaguing XML. If you want to make a new XML schema to use as a template for future data instances, you often have to write the explicit XML tags. Unfortunately, the syntax can be overwhelming to many. Plus, explicitly writing the tags is extremely error prone. What InfoPath has done is make an easy to use graphical front end. Far friendlier to the user. This user interface then can generate a schema in a robust fashion. Even people capable of editing schemas directly might still want to use what Microsoft has provided.
Along these lines, chapter 5 is a good example. While not perhaps directly concerning schema, it tackles the problem of validating what the user types into a form. It follows the approach that you should clean up your data as early as possible. Preferably before it even gets into the database. The UI lets you impose constraints on the user input into various fields of your form, by offering dialog windows with many options.
All commendably straightforward.
The second section of the text is mostly for programmers, who have already written code for Office.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A good book for one to understand partnership accounting.......2007-05-13
The book is well organized. Practical. A nice starter's book for accountant who wants to get in the door of private equity fund's accounting world.
it's OK as an introductory book.......2006-12-31
The book provides an introductory overview of partnership accounting. All the calculations and formulas cited in the book are from its own software. Those similar formulas are also provided in other softwares which are much more commonly used, e.g. MS Excel. Lots of time spent on the tax allocations rather than on the P&L allocations. There're also apparent errors in the formulas as well, such as the annualized return calculation on P. 246.

Good all around book.......2007-02-06
The book is very well written. I bought the book to learn about QuickBooks Job Costing which there is very little about, but it did have easy to follow instructions on the basics of QuickBooks. I gave it to a client who is a roofing contractor. My customer already had an estimating program so I did not use the estimator program that came with it.
Very helpful.......2006-07-30
Am teaching myself QuickBooks for my husband's carpentry business, and this book is very helpful. The QuickBooks tutorials are great, but without this book, which is specific to carpentry, it would be much more difficult. I recommend getting the book before you start setting up accounts in QuickBooks. It even comes with a CD for a sample company and estimator program.
Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system.......2006-06-08
Enhanced with an accompanying CD-ROM, the Contractor's Guide To QuickBooks Pro 2006 by the team of contractors, accountants, and QuickBooks Pro experts Karen Mitchell, Craig Savage, and Jim Erwin is an in-depth, "user-friendly" guide to coordinating and knowledgeably approaching using the software programming of QuickBooks Pro in building construction contract development. Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system, QuickBooks Pro 2006 guides readers through QuickBooks Pro 2006's national estimator, an easy-to-use program with over 100 pages of construction cost and estimating data for general contractors; the Job Cost Wizard which swiftly converts the National estimates into QuickBooks Pro estimates for ease in creation of invoices and track job costs; as well as a collection of blank construction forms for customization and use with customers and subcontractors. QuickBooks Pro 2006 is very strongly recommended for its concise and thorough coverage of the often difficult dealings of construction contract estimates and bids.

Book Description
The model presented in this manual for the IT professional helps managers work with tech workers and their customers to make a clear and well-substantiated argument for IT service investments. In order to validate and fully explain this model, Wigodsky presents an overview of the "why" behind technology investment for any organization, and combines this with detailed real-world solutions that maximize BCO efficiency. By eliminating the "futz factor" commonly associated with system ownership costs, the book provides a glimpse of the next generation IT architecture, a repeatable process for identifying organization-wide system costs, and a customizable model for integrating BCO management with your people, processes, and technology.
· Provides detailed technical architectures, processes, and integrated solutions using common computing technologies
· Helps the reader build a customized model for reviewing the long-term potential costs and benefits of interrelated IT investments
· Includes observations of HP thought leaders, experienced consultants, and customers on past projects

Thought provoking, idea generating ..........2003-11-10
I wish Amazon.com permitted me to give this book 4.5 stars...
If you're looking for all the answers, a complete IT checklist, or the meaning of life, keep looking. Having said that, this book is a 'thought trigger' that will generate a lot of ideas and stimulate the reader to question their prejudices about IT and costs. I like to think of myself as an "outside the box" thinker, and this book stimulated that even more.
I especially like the way this book presents cost of ownership from a more holistic view than the traditional IT view, presenting a way of understanding that impact on the business should be factored into the equation, all the while applying "Occam's Raxor".
I am hoping Drew's "home boss" (as he refers to in the book) keeps him writing and on track so that he will write his next book soon. I look forward to it.
Book Description
The reasons that businesses have difficulty implementing enterprise-level information systems are explained in this overview of the enterprise software market. Helping software companies understand the implementation experience, this guide provides a framework for companies to build software products that are compatible with organizations, humans, and complex customer environments. Case studies on emerging companies are featured, including OpenMarket, Inc., E-Docs, ObjectStore, NewRiver, Inc., and BBN Communications.
Customer Reviews:
A Poorly Written Book.......2006-12-16
This book was poorly written and difficult to follow. Although some of the ideas may be good, they were communicated so poorly that it makes recommending this book impossible. In many places it appears that nobody proof-read the book. The author needs to take a high school level writing class.
Valuable insight into real-world issues .......2006-07-22
This book contains valuable insights into the enterprise software market. It should be on every software CEO, product manager and marketing executive's website.
Great read.......2006-02-27
A very readable look at the reality of large enterprise software implementations. Good for anyone involved in implementing or developing large systems. Backed by a lot of research but put in ussable frameworks for the professional. I liked the way case studies were intermixed with the practical frameworks. It explains in a constructive way why a lot of projects fail. The "assimilation" chapter is very differnt way to look at these kinds of systems (from a holistic perspective).
Practical aspects for emerging software companies.......2005-11-08
Mr. Le Clair has thoughtfully captured the many nuances of the critical decisions facing an emerging technology company. In particular, the tadeoffs between building prototypes and selling them to get early revenue and a credible reference versus institutionalizing formal development methodologies early. He provides documented examples of the importance of understanding users and providing them with an excellent user experience. The material features many diagrams to help understand the multi-dimensional conflicts and synergies facing decision-makers as companies progress. The book features many lessons learned over the past twenty years, lessons that will prove valuable as new companies and technology-based solutions emerge in the coming years.

Book Description
How do you design personalized user experiences that delight and provide value to the customers of an eCommerce site? Personalization does not guarantee high quality user experience: a personalized user experience has the best chance of success if it is developed using a set of best practices in HCI. In this book 35 experts from academia, industry and government focus on issues in the design of personalized web sites. The topics range from the design and evaluation of user interfaces and tools to information architecture and computer programming related to commercial web sites. The book covers four main areas:
-Theoretical, Conceptual, and Architectural Frameworks of Personalization,
-Research on the Design and Evaluation of Personalized User Experiences in Different Domains,
-Approaches to personalization Through Recommender Systems,
-Lessons Learned and Future Research Questions.
This book will be a valuable tool in helping the reader to understand the range of factors to take into consideration in designing and building a personalized user experience. The authors of each of the chapters identify possibilities and alert the reader to issues that can be addressed in the beginning of a project by taking a 'big picture' view of designing personalized user interfaces. For anyone working or studying in the field of HCI, information architecture or eCommerce, this book will provide a solid foundation of knowledge and prepare for the challenges ahead.
