Book Description

Financial statements are the basis for a wide range of business analysis. Managers, securities analysts, bankers and consultants all use them to make business decisions. There is strong demand among business students for course materials that provide a framework for using financial statement data in a variety of business analysis and valuation contexts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Case study is worth reading..........2007-04-21

First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.

3 out of 5 stars good case study.......2006-04-30

I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".

This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.

The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.

I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.

The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

I rate it "Good - 4 stars"

2 out of 5 stars Required Text.......2002-09-17

This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2006-10-11

Apparently, the previous two reviews were written by the authors.

In all honesty, this is the most un-readable text I have encountered in my 4 years of undergrad and 1+ years of grad study.

I can understand the diffuclty in translating FASB and SFAS principles to layman's terms, but the general flow of the text is verbose and time consuming.

The follow up questions at the end of each chapter often refer to topics that are defined differently in the chapter itself, leading you to re-read and re-read the same chapter. Important topics that could be otherwise easily explained are drawn out to the point where you feel your just plain stupid.

If you are a professor and your looking for a text to assign, this is not it.

Unless you're a sadist.

5 out of 5 stars A review of Accounting Theory text.......2000-03-01

In my opinion, this is an outstanding text. It is easy to read and it covers all the important areas of accouning theory. In my view, this text eliminates the need for the student to study sentences trying to understand what is being said. The writing is clear and straight to the point. Thus, one can concentrate on learning, not trying to unscramble sentences for meaning. If you are looking for an accounting theory text, give this one a look-see. My guess is that you will like what you read. Like all theory texts, however, this one does NOT come with much material to assist an instructor (e.g., no test bank, no transparencies to assist in teaching, etc.). About the only thing I found was an accompanying booklet that gives answers to "cases" that are in given for each chapter. However, this is not a serious drawback, in my view. Because of skimpy supporting material, I would think that authors would notice this and "corner the market" by trying to please educators. Given the excellence of this text, my guess is that ample supporting materials would put this text in lots of classrooms. But that is just my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Well presented and simple to understand. But lack............1999-08-18

This book has presented the Accounting Theory in a simple to understand manner. It is useful for those who need to acquire simple to understand theories in the FASB. Unfortunetly, the book does not go into the explaining of the many theories in details, eg. the prescriptive and descriptive theories.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GOOD INITIAL TEXTBOOK ON BANK MANAGEMENT.......2006-02-06

This book is a good example of what a textbook should be like. It explains the topic of bank management with competence, pointing out all the major issues without going too deep (and boring the beginner). After reading the first few chapters, the interested reader feels knowledgeable enough to intelligently discuss the topic.

The book is well segmented, with an initial explanation of bank financial statements and the main risks and opportunities associated with bank management. These chapters empower the beginner with confidence of understanding exactly how a bank makes money. Bank management seems like a very complex topic, something outside the reach of normal people; it is not true, anyone with a decent volume of training could perform the basic management activities of a bank.

I highly recommend this book for anyone working at a bank in order to understand the business, its risks and the main drivers of performance. If you are considering bank entrepreneurship, this is a must. There is a chapter that demonstrates the initial processes of bank management in a very simple way, which is interesting and encouraging to someone following down that pathway.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book..........2001-06-26

It is a very useful book with a clear style and it presents an in-depth analysis of commercial banks. But it lacks one thing that could have made it much better: it doesnt have a solutions manual and a guide for the cases..It presents difficulties for the self learners like me...

5 out of 5 stars Want to know about banking ?.......2001-04-22

The essentials of banking are clearly explained in this book.Topics such as the management of bank capital, asset/liability management, international banking and bank mergers and acquisitions are explained with detail and clarity. Though this book doesn't deal with internet banking it helps you understand the underlying nature of every bank. I specially like the chapter where the authors explain the profitability of banks and how the banking business measures it.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly Out-of-Date.......1999-10-10

The authors seem to be out-of-touch with today's high-tech banking and trends. A new generation of bankers moving at the "speed of thought" has left the contents of this book in the dust. Not a good pick for educating students who will lead the pack in the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - A must read for all aspiring Bankers.......1998-07-25

This is an excellent book which has dealt with the subject of Banking in depth. It is scientific in its approach and made the subject understandable to even morons like me (as quoted by my wife).. Do not miss this..

5 out of 5 stars A Natural Integration of Theory and Practice.......1999-06-26

This book appears to break new ground because it discusses every thoery with actual data and/ or real-world example. In addition, this book explains many things in a conversational tone and thus makes it very easy for me to understand the material. However, I would like to see more end-of-chapter problems and questions. Furthermore, I think that end-of-chapter cases should be a little more complex. Overall, though, the 4th edition of Global Corporate Finance is better than most books in the field.

    Book Description

This text/ case book is based on the very successful Analysis of Corporate Financial Reports second-year MBA course taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Business Administration. This text supports the assumption that success in the business world as a manager, investor, creditor, or public accountant requires an understanding of the interplay between a company’s corporate strategy and its corporate financial reporting policies and practices. This book shows financial statement users how to analyze financial reports so as to identify the economic realities of the reporting corporation by providing the reader with: 1. an understanding of current financial reporting practices; 2. the ways in which corporate financial statements influence our economic system; 3. consequences of corporate financial data for those who depend on their credibility; 4. the methods by which statement users interpret data contained in financial reports.

If you're interested in Consumer Behavior, grab this book. The writers of Consumer Behavior seem to have the student of all ages in mind. For both undergraduate to MBA programs, I felt the content (from case studies to psychological buyer behavior), lives up to its name.

The premise of the book: how understanding buyer behavior influences overall strategy.

If you're looking for a self-tutorial in Consumer Behavior, this is it.
