3 out of 5 stars Useful for larger not-for-profits finance staff/volunteers.......2007-06-17

Useful, relatively easy tor read reference on not-for-profit (NFP) accounting, generally aimed at non-finance/accounting person. Not so useful for an organization using cash accounting methods (versus accrual), common in smaller NFPs. Some good ideas for low-end (i.e., <$50K income/year) NFP BOD members.

4 out of 5 stars Non-Profit Primer.......2006-08-04

Good book, great illustrations. Very clear. However, if you've been doing corporate accounting for a number of years, this is pretty basic. Better for someone with limited experience. I was hoping for something a little more advanced.

4 out of 5 stars helpful information.......2006-02-27

This book will help bookkeepers new to non-profit accounting. The book goes into detail, showing actual entries, and the reasoning behind them. It also points out dos and don'ts, basic accrual accounting, and what reporting an accountant will need for the 990 form. The book is a primer for the non-profit bookkeeper and/or organization treasurer.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-05-12

This is a fantastic resource for accountants entering into not-for-profit organizations for the first time or to review further for accountants wanting more clarity in their current management positions. This book covers everything and has excellent sections on accounting and reporting guidelines for the many entity types of not-for-profit organizations. Also has a chapter covering entities on public not-for-profit (GASB). This book truly is worth keeping in the office as a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars midnight accounting help.......1999-12-07

Sometimes you may be serving on the board of a nonprofit group and discover that your funder requires GAAP. Well what is that. This book will help you understand the nonprofit world of accounting. This work has been a resource that I have turned to at midnight myself aand have recommended many times. At times it is a little technical. But it helps to use some "accounting" language in the next board or committee meeting that you will be discussing budgets or finalcial presentatons.

Also, I have used this as a guideline when I consulted a small group that needed help with internal controls.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very valuable for Not-For-Profit Organizations.......1999-10-18

I felt this book was basically well written. It at times is a little too technical, but basically is easy to follow. I do find it an invaluable tool for reference information in the not-for-profit industry.

4 out of 5 stars It is helpful to me........1999-05-25

It was lucky to find this book. I'm a college student. I am preparing to take a AICPA exam. The library of my college doesn't have enough books about Not-for-Profit Organization accounting. This book gives me friendly and detailed explanations. well, a shortness of this book is a tedious text, such as one color text, no graphic figures. I just worried about objective judgements, because I didn't study other Not-fot-Profit books. Anyway, this book makes me come to Not-for-Profit accounting more closely. I'd like to recommend this book.

Book Description

There are over half a million high-net-worth individuals in the United States. Already 5 percent of them have private foundations, and interest in setting up charitable organizations is on the rise--due to the estate and tax-planning advantages offered by foundations and the growing desire of many to give back to the community. Creating a Private Foundation is a straightforward and authoritative guide for individuals and families looking at the pluses and minuses of creating a foundation, as well as for the advisers who serve these high-net-worth clients. It explains the reasons for establishing a foundation, the steps for setting one up, and tips for avoiding common pitfalls. Author Roger Silk covers the ins and outs of private foundations from the perspective of both philanthropists and the professionals who work with them.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars private foundation fundamentals.......2006-03-09

The book is more for donors than advisors. I does not provide enough of the necessary essential legally technical information.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Primer.......2003-11-01

Unwitting new philantrophists sometimes end up with bureaucratic creatures that do exactly what the donor did not want. This book is full of practical advice on how to avoid unpleasant surprises if you set up a foundation of your own, such as finding out that you have no control over its activities.

It also gives a succinct review of investment problems. Foundations can potentially last for many generations. But they can easily mismanage themselves into oblivion in short order. The authors identify seven deadly investment sins.

For example, foundations don't need to frequently redeem their investments, but some mistakenly invest in liquid assets and lose returns as a result. They would be better off with non-traditional investments like private-equity, income producing real estate, hedge funds, and timber.

Many foundations fail to diversify, unwittingly taking on risk. THey start with stock from the founder's company and continue to hold a concentrated position, exposing themselves to the vagaries of that business. In 2002 the David and Lucille Packard Foundation was forced to cut its donations drastically when Hewlett-Packard stock fell.

IN short, an easy-to-read, useful guide.

5 out of 5 stars Creating Private Foundation.......2003-06-16

A great great book to give to your existing Private Foundation clients, as well as those considering their options. The book hits on several key points among many others - which are the reason to formalize your investment policy statement(IPS) and donor intent issues. The author is correct that too often good intentions fail to result in effective results. It deals with other vehicles like charitable lead trusts (CLTs) and charitable remainder trusts (CRTs) as well as donor advised and support organizations. It is a big picture book not a technical how to for the attorney!

"The authors have provided an interesting and helpful resource to understand and manage the nonprofit organization's investments. I believe that this book should be in the library of all nonprofit practitioners that are concerned about prudent stewardship."
—Jim Croft, PhD, Vice President, Finance and Administration The Field Museum (Chicago, Illinois)

"This book is a straightforward, well-written guide to the strategies and administration of investment assets of nonprofit institutions. It relies on the principles of modern portfolio theory in emphasizing asset diversification, performance measurement, and careful manager selection. It debunks much of what passes for 'investment advice' in the popular media. To their credit, the authors describe the challenges, factors, and actors in the investment industry, from the perspective of the individuals and committees charged by nonprofit institutions swith investment oversight responsibility."
—John E. Allerson, Senior Vice President, Finance and Operations and Chief Financial Officer, Roosevelt University (Chicago, Illinois)

"I would consider this book 'Investments 101' for anyone who deals with overseeing investments of a company, whether it is a profit or nonprofit. Yet, at the same time, it would help all investors, small or large, in dealing with their own individual portfolios. DiMeo, Schneider, Benoit, et al. have organized the book in such a way that each chapter deals with the very essence of how to structure an investment portfolio and how to look at the complex environment in an easy way."
—Kevin Higdon, Vice President of Finance Elkhart General Hospital (Elkhart, Indiana)

"From modern portfolio theory to the role of the fiduciary, The Practical Guide to Managing Nonprofit Assets provides trustees of nonprofit funds with a chapter-by-chapter explanation of what they should know to carry out their responsibilities. For the uninitiated, it creates a foundation for understanding investing in a difficult environment. For the experienced, it serves as a checklist of issues to be considered in exercising appropriate investment oversight."

Starting off, I had no idea where to begin which the financial management of a non-profit. I was worried this book would read through like an accounting textbook, but that is not the case at all. The book gives practical advice about running a non-profit and how this differs for a for-profit organization. There are also a lot of basic financial statements to use as examples. While this book did not contain all the information I was looking for, I found it to be a great starting point in my learning process.

In order to make sure that a not-for-profit is able to best complete its mission, a manager of the organization must determine how to allocate the resources it has today, and ensure the financial future of the organization by managing the funds to work for them in the long-term. This second volume of the widely-respected Mission-Based Management(r) Series outlines a not-for-profit organization's plan for financial success. It highlights the eight characteristics of financial empowerment, and provides the skills and concepts that a nonprofit organization and its managers will need to survive, including estimating cash needs, treating funders like valued customers, developing money-making businesses, determining the financial options that are available, and implementing an empowered budget process.
