Clear guide for creating effective presentations .......2007-08-24
Microsoft PowerPoint changed the world of presentations by simplifying the process of creating a computerized slide show. Alas, over time people started squeezing too much information into every slide and using the preinstalled generic titles. PowerPoint's simplicity let people forget the purpose of presentations: to persuade or to inform without being boring. Cliff Atkinson shows you a creative way to build a good presentation without falling into the PowerPoint template trap - tell a story instead. At present, he provides a free template, storyboard formatter and story guide at sociablemedia.com that adds value to the book, which refers to these resources repeatedly. We recommend this to anyone who gives presentations.
I've used this method and it works.......2007-07-25
I borrowed it from the library and I am going to purchase it for my personal business library. I think that this is a great resource book. I decided to try this method since I do a presentation about once a month to pharmacists. This book helped me to organize my thoughts and present the material in a logical manner. I am in the health care industry and the people I present to are used to seeing bullet points BUT they are bored with it. For those that think the information here won't work, I say give it a try before dismissing it. You may find that your audience doesn't want as many bullet points and facts as you think and that you are a breath of fresh air in doing something new and innovative with your presentations. And remember you can put all of that information from your bullet points in the notes pages and print that out for them.
Don't understand what others see in it.......2007-07-07
I was disappointed having bought this book based on good reviews, so here's my review:
1. The author provides just one tool for one particular type of presentation: "pitch an idea to your bosses". The tool is a 3-act presentation using few words and more graphics and presenter narration.
Although a good tool for some presenters and some presentations, I can only see myself using this in 10-20% of my presentations.
2. Because the author refuses to explore other methods, the book becomes very repetitive and too detailed going on about the same points all the time.
3. Because of this, this is certainly not a book to keep for reference.
4. ...unless you are a total PowerPoint novice and computer-illiterate and want to read a step-by-step instructions about how to resize and crop images in PowerPoint, etc.
5. This is the first book by Microsoft Press I read and I was shocked at the obvious attempts throughout the book to advertise other marginally-related Microsoft products.
The book description says: "Targeted for intermediate to advanced level users". I would never recommend this book to anyone but absolute beginners and even then there must be better books.
The intermediate user should really just browse the first couple of chapters to get the basic idea (1. set the scene 2. show the conflict 3. resolve the conflict) in a bookstore and then decide for himself if he really wants to waste money on something which can easily be summarized on one page.
Better Presentations.......2007-07-05
I've been doing presentations since the BP (before Powerpoint) era and I have a structure that I've used since the beginning. This book caused me to rethink my approach, and, after using it on several recent presentations, I have to say it is a change for the better. Highly recommended if quality communications is your goal.
a very, very helpful book on creating effective presentations.......2007-07-03
While I didn't adopt the 3 > 3 approach Atkinson suggests, I really took to heart his idea of replacing wordy, boring slides with those with only a title (a concept, expressed as a sentence) and high-impact relevant graphics. As a result, I created a six-hour workshop (on personal productivity) that contained a total of five bullets (out of 130 slides). I also created - from the same slide show - a prose booklet that participants take home. Very useful.

Book Description
"Microsoft Office InfoPath represents a revolutionary leap in XML technologies and a new paradigm for gathering business-critical information. I am delighted that Scott Roberts and Hagen Green, two distinguished members of the InfoPath product team, decided to share their experience in this book."
--From the Foreword by Jean Paoli, cocreator of XML 1.0 and Microsoft Office InfoPath
Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007 offers breakthrough tools for gathering, managing, and integrating business-critical information, and creating efficient forms-driven processes. Two longtime members of Microsoft's InfoPath product team have written the first comprehensive, hands-on guide to building successful XML-based solutions with InfoPath 2007.
The book opens with a practical primer on the fundamentals of InfoPath form template design for information workers and application developers at all levels of experience. It then moves into advanced techniques for customizing, integrating, and extending form templates--with all the code examples and detail needed by professional developers.
Learn how to:
- Design form templates: create blank form templates, insert and customize controls, use advanced formatting, and construct and lay out views
- Work with data: start with XML data or schema, manually edit data sources, and understand design-time visuals
- Add custom business logic to forms, and integrate them with other applications
- Retrieve and query data from external data sources, including XML files, databases, SharePoint lists, Web services, and ADO.NET DataSets
- Submit and receive form data using ADO.NET
- Save, preview, and publish to e-mail, SharePoint, and more
- Build reusable components with template parts
- Create workflows with SharePoint and InfoPath E-Mail Forms
- Administer Forms Services and Web-enabled form templates
- Build advanced form templates using C# form code, custom controls, add-ins, and the new InfoPath 2007 managed object model
- Design form templates using Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO)
- Update, secure, and optimize your form templates

The InfoPath book to judge all other InfoPath books by.......2007-06-16
This is the first InfoPath book I have found answers every question I have had about InfoPath. The beauty of this book is although it does cover a lot of the technical side of InfoPath it also deals with some of the simpler solutions that are best achieved with just the InfoPath designer and declarative logic. With an easy to read style and lots of samples this book has become the definitive InfoPath resource in my technical library.
If you're just beginning with InfoPath this book is for you. If you've creating solutions with InfoPath since day one I'm still confident that this book would be a worthwhile investment.
Good job guys!
Great Detailed InfoPath 2007 Book .......2007-03-30
This book is a great narrative style resource for learning all of the elements and techniques in InfoPath 2007. The style of writing is a bit different as it has more of a reading focus than a reference focus. So if you are looking for solely a reference book you might want something different. The authors are TOP NOTCH though and do an excellent job.(Especially with Forms Services gotcha's/warnings) The demos/samples/sample forms they let you download from the Addison Wesley website are WELL WORTH THE EFFORT of getting and are a great learning tool.
A comprehensive resource for InfoPath and Forms Services 2007.......2007-03-05
This book was written by two Microsoft employees focused on InfoPath, and includes a foreword by InfoPath cocreator Jean Paoli. At ~1,200 pages, it's a timely and thorough resource for developers who need to understand InfoPath and Forms Services, including coverage of VSTA, VSTO, and other related topics. It's unsurprisingly a largely accentuate-the-positive book, but it also includes useful summaries of, for example, features that can be used in the InfoPath client but not in Forms Services.
XML with little or no programming.......2007-03-04
As XML has become the industry standard, Microsoft has increasingly oriented its Office suite to use it. The latest result is this enhanced InfoPath, in its 2007 incarnation. The book is divided into two parts. Each targeting a different audience.
The first part is aimed at a general purpose Office user, who is not assumed to be a programmer. It addresses what is a problem plaguing XML. If you want to make a new XML schema to use as a template for future data instances, you often have to write the explicit XML tags. Unfortunately, the syntax can be overwhelming to many. Plus, explicitly writing the tags is extremely error prone. What InfoPath has done is make an easy to use graphical front end. Far friendlier to the user. This user interface then can generate a schema in a robust fashion. Even people capable of editing schemas directly might still want to use what Microsoft has provided.
Along these lines, chapter 5 is a good example. While not perhaps directly concerning schema, it tackles the problem of validating what the user types into a form. It follows the approach that you should clean up your data as early as possible. Preferably before it even gets into the database. The UI lets you impose constraints on the user input into various fields of your form, by offering dialog windows with many options.
All commendably straightforward.
The second section of the text is mostly for programmers, who have already written code for Office.

Simplistic.......2007-05-14
I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.
Excellent for College Students in Business.......2007-03-08
I'm an accountancy major at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This has greatly helped me on my group cases where I write memorandums and other professional communication. Writing hasn't come easily for me (like numbers have) but this book helps me find my weaknesses and gives me suggestions for them. At first I wondered why such a small book was so expensive, but the price is definitely worth it!

Waste of money.......2007-04-12
Contains little information that is not covered by the help files. Don't bother with this manual or series.
Helped me come up to speed quickly.......2007-02-28
I bought this book after I read the Windows Vista Step by Step book. I really liked that book, but I like this one even better. There is so much information about Outlook in general and the cool new features of Outlook 2007--I've been using it at work and it's just amazing. I did have some trouble setting up the program at home, which is why I bought this book. I found the solution in Chapter 1.
One thing I like about this book, and I guess the series, is that it has not only the exercises and lots of pictures, but also some great tips and tricks that have helped me come up to speed fast.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Novices.......2006-03-13
I needed a book that would explain the basics and give me the confidence I needed to draft contracts. This book hit the spot. The author, deftly explains the basics of contracts, boilerplate terms and what not to do. It was simple, funny and very informative. I was specifically looking for information on business sales contracts but found a lot of information about stock purchases, employee contracts etc., things I will need to know more about in the future. The CD was also very helpful with a wealth of document examples. I would heartily recommend this book for others like me, newcomers to the business world. Once you have the basics or wish to delve deeper into the legal jungle then you will need a more indepth text. However for those without a legal background and in need of a concise, easy to understand and informative book on business contracts, this is the book for us.

Customer Reviews:
Not as helpful as I hoped. .......2006-08-03
The book seemed to be geared towards Crystal 9 and not Crystal XI. I had purchased XI at the same time. The book was not a large book and half of it contained an extensive glossary of terms. Very unneccessary as this information is found in many places.
Thanks
Bonnie
Good tips - but lots of repetition.......2006-06-15
The author of this book is also the author of the various editions of the standard 'Crystal Reports: The Complete Guide' book. This book tries to pick up where that book left off--in other words, this book tries to be a resource for intermediate to advanced users.
The book does present numerous interesting tips and a few really useful strategies for report development. However, the examples are not particularly thorough and there simply are not enough of them to really cover the breadth of the product. If used as an "idea-generator" book for a mid-level developer it would be useful, but it is not a comprehensive guide to advanced techniques.
As other reviewers have already mentioned, about half of the book is just reprinted information from the electronic help files that are included with Crystal Reports. Of course having them nicely organized and bound in printed form is very useful--but the book is pretty pricey for a simple reference manual.
I read and enjoyed the book, I learned a few things and it gave me some ideas, but in general it was a bit dissappointing. If work's buying it for you--great! If it's your own money--well, you might wish you hadn't spent it.
Very valuable.......2004-04-08
Like vitamins - read one a day for better reports. Glad I bought this book.
Disappointing Read.......2004-01-20
This is a disappointing read. Half of the book is the reference material from the help files and the other half is random report design techniques that don't fit together. Give this one a pass.
Superbly organized and very highly recommended.......2003-11-13
Crystal Reports Professional Results, by George Peckis a superbly organized and very highly recommended resource which provides a wealth of tips, ticks, and techniques on the creation and presentation of expert quality reports and complex, interactive analysis documentation both on and off the Web. George Peckis is particular adept at explaining just how to develop and design reports, make maps, tables, and charts, extract and present data from SQL databases, download ready-to-use sample report templates, and so much more.

Book Description
Every business professional faces challenges in managing their time to be as efficient and productive as possible. Information management has become an important everyday task in helping manage these challenges successfully, and Microsoft Outlook is the gold standard to help users stay organized. Outlook not only helps manage contacts, appointments, and tasks, it also serves as the e-mail and fax client. Outlook 2007 has been redesigned and improved with a new user interface, electronic business cards, RSS support, smart scheduling, anti-phishing capabilities, junk e-mail filter, and more. Case study sections called "Improving Your Outlook" illustrate how to apply the information learned in real-world situations. Troubleshooting sections in each chapter illustrate common problems that occur when using Outlook, followed by a detailed solution. With this book, you learn the latest features and improvements in Outlook by focusing on user productivity through real-world techniques in real-world environments.

Customer Reviews:
Never managed to read the book up to now.......2007-07-30
I bought this book because I wanted to get technical details about how billing is done and instead of that I got, from the very first chapter to the last, some sort of repetititive management and regulatory check-lists.
The book seems to have been written for contemplative bosses completely disconnected from operations and who need to build powerpoint slides to tell what his team is up to.
For technical folks who are in the telecoms industry, the book by its academic and disconnected approach is surely a boring read. For a software shop like ours, needing to build billing support tools, this book is up to now completely useless.

- Very, very basic book

Customer Reviews:
Know the FDCPA before putting letter to use.......2007-05-18
Most these letter appear to be in violation of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. I did not find it very useful for anyone trying to run an ethical business.
Found this book to be very helpful........2005-02-16
I purchased this book when I was starting my own collection agency and found many great letters here. I mostly used parts of different letters to create my own, but there were alot of great peices to use together. I liked this book so much I purchased it for a friend of mine who was also starting her own collection agency. I would recommend this book to help you create your own debt collection letters. There is quite a bit of good information in this book.
Very, very basic book.......2004-01-08
Upon receipt of this book I was very, very disapointed.
If you are looking for a collection letter book that gives solid, indepth letters that include FDCPA tags and other inportant collection letter information, this is not the book to buy.
The letters are very basic (people with zero experience might find this to be a starting point) and it glosses over many topics. OR does not address them at all. (If you need letters for accounts more than 90 days past due -- there is no help here.)
I will be very wary of what I buy on Amazon based on this experience. If you are doubtful about buying it -- don't!
