Design of Experiments for Engineers and Scientists
ASIN: 0471361011 |
Book Description
Fulfill the practical potential of DOE-with a powerful, 16-step approach for applying the Taguchi method
Over the past decade, Design of Experiments (DOE) has undergone great advances through the work of the Japanese management guru Genechi Taguchi. Yet, until now, books on the Taguchi method have been steeped in theory and complicated statistical analysis. Now this trailblazing work translates the Taguchi method into an easy-to-implement 16-step system.
Based on Ranjit Roy's successful Taguchi training course, this extensively illustrated book/CD-ROM package gives readers the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply the Taguchi method to engineering projects-from theory and applications to hands-on analysis of the data. It is suitable for managers and technicians without a college-level engineering or statistical background, and its self-study pace-with exercises included in each chapter-helps readers start using Taguchi DOE tools on the job quickly. Special features include:
- An accompanying CD-ROM of Qualitek-4 software, which performs calculations and features all example experiments described in the book
- Problem-solving exercises relevant to actual engineering situations, with solutions included at the end of the text
- Coverage of two-, three-, and four-level factors, analysis of variance, robust designs, combination designs, and more
Engineers and technical personnel working in process and product design-as well as other professionals interested in the Taguchi method-will find this book/CD-ROM a tremendously important and useful asset for making the most of DOE in their work.
Customer Reviews:
Blatant Commercialism.......2007-05-07
I found this book to be noting but a thinly disquised sales pitch for software, training and consulting services. A real rip off.
Great book for practical applications.......2002-03-29
I bought this book hoping to learn DOE using Taguchi Methods and apply what I learned to real life problems in my work. It was very helpful. Not only did it help me learn the methods I needed to perform my testing at work but I did it in only 8 days of reading. The book was very easy to read and the examples helped me understand everything I needed to know to apply this method to real situations. A great buy for anyone looking to learn Taguchi Methods.
An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation.......2002-02-20
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.
What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.
Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.
Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.
This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.
Must have for Quality Control Professionals and Educators.......2002-02-05
First, I completely agree with all the good things mentioned in the other reviews, but wish to add the following comments:
1. The discussion group (usenet) hosted by Dr Roy is fantastic. If by chance you don't "get it" from reading the book, a simple question posted to the usenet frequently gets you an answer, often within a few hours (its a vocal crowd!!). Many times, the author himself responds to usenet questions. And, on at least one instance, after I repeatdly asked my question, he began exchanging emails with me, which then led to some pleasant phone disscussions.
2. User friendly software and support. See above.
3. Taguichi is frequently attacked by full blown Design of Experiments statistical types who miss the whole point. I strongly encourage all professionals interested in gauging quality control to try out his books and the free software downloads....
An excellent book with powerful software and support......
Reads like a winner, looks like a winner, performs likes a winner....... need I say more...

User friendly.......2002-02-05
Dr.Roy's book is amazing. He has covered almost everything you need to know about the Taguchi method - even meticulous things. This book will suite both for beginners as well as for experts. The CD which comes along with this book is very helpful in understanding the concept behind the analysis with more than 50 examples. If at all you are looking for a book about Taguchi design of Experiments - I highly recommend one and all to buy Dr.Roy's book and benefit through his work.
I started as a beginner and now Iam an expert in Taguchi analysis - and the credit goes to Dr.Roy - he also helps personally in answering your questions.
Thank you very much Dr.Roy.
Three CHEERS to Dr.Roy!

Book Description
The service economy is now the largest portion of the industrialized world's economic activity. This development has dramatically raised the importance of maximizing productivity excellence in service organizations. The need for productivity excellence has led service organization managers to use benchmarking techniques to identify and adopt best practices in their organizations. Benchmarking has enabled service organizations to continuously improve by allowing service units to learn from methods that prove the most efficient and effective. Service Productivity Management systematically explores complex service issues and suggests the most appropriate methods to improve service productivity, quality, and profitability. The book provides insights and methods to answer questions on a range of productivity issues: How do you manage profitability of a network of hundreds or thousands of branch offices disbursed over several states and countries? How can managed-care organizations manage the quality and cost of hundreds of physicians providing health services to millions of plan members? What methods would enable a government to ensure that the multiple offices serving citizens across a country are operating at low cost while meeting the required service quality? Each of these service settings are examples of the many service providers that deliver a complex set of services to a widely diversified set of customers. . Service Productivity Management is an in-depth guide to using the most powerful available benchmarking technique to improve service organization performance — Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The underlying concepts that drive DEA and enable it to increase productivity and profitability of service organizations are explained in non-technical language. It describes how DEA: (1) Identifies best practice service units; (2) Exposes high cost inefficient service units; (3) Identifies specific changes to each service unit to elevate performance to the best practice level that provides high quality service at low cost; and most important, (4) Guides the improvement process. Use of basic and advanced DEA methods are all supported by case-study applications of organizations that have successfully improved their performance. The techniques discussed in the book are accessible to all managers with access to Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet software (Excel). The book provides step-by-step guidance to enable the reader to apply DEA and Excel software to their organization. Packaged with the book is a ready-to-use DEA software CD that includes the DEAFrontier software. DEAFrontier is a Microsoft® Excel Add-in designed to run DEA analyses on any set of organizations of interest to the reader. For a free trial version of the DEAFrontier software, please visit www.deafrontier.com.

Contemporary Strategy Analysis: Concepts, Techniques, Applications
ASIN: 0387983562 |
Book Description
Providing an introduction to modern data analysis techniques, these casebooks can be used as the primary or secondary text for elementary business statistics courses. Statistics has the reputation of being a boring, complicated, and confusing mix of mathematical formulas accompanied by computers used to do something. This casebook nad its companion volume Business Analysis Usuing Regression change that impression by showing how statistics gives insights and ansswers interesting business questions. The material is organized into classes of related case studies that develop a single key idea of statistics. The authors begin by discussing an application that motivates the key idea. Students are then shown how to analyze a data set. The emphasis of the analysis is to answer important business questions with statistics rather than talk about statistics. Basic Business Statistics introduces ideas often not emphasized in elementary texts such as issues of robustness, the use of transformations to simplify problems, sampling bias, confounding, kernel density, quality control, and scatterplot matrices. Business Analysis with Regression includes a discussion of scatterplot smoothing, prediction intervals for new observations, collinearity, logistic regression, nonlinear models, and multiple comparisons in regression. The text includes directions for data analyses with JMP and an appendix with Minitab commands. Professors Dean P. Foster, Robert A. Stine, and Richard P. Waterman are members of the Department of Statistics at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Customer Reviews:
GOOD FOCUS, POORLY PRESENTED.......2003-03-20
This book has an interesting premise of focusing statistics for business at the mid-level using the JMP software. The concepts addressed are the right ones, even the order is good.
However, on the downside, it is very difficult to read. The cases are not well explained. This book is used at Wharton's 1st year core course in statistics and the general agreement is that it is very hard to comprehend it. I recommend an editor to the authors.

Book Description
Existing ERP systems are being used to support an increasing amount of critical e-business initiatives, even though this is far from their original purpose. While ERP can form a foundation for successfully meeting e-business needs, future success will be derived not only from a firm, supportive foundation, but from a solid e-business superstructure that guides your company through a value chain that has grown longer and more complex. ERP Optimization provides a technology-centric approach to leading your company through an e-transformation. It shows you how to leverage current investments in information systems while minimizing disruptions to the core business of the enterprise. Written in a business vernacular, the book effectively bridges the gap between technology and business strategy. The author takes you through the process of defining e-business goals and accessing and maximizing current systems capabilities. She details the steps required to assume a leadership position within an integrated business community and demonstrates how to support secure information exchanges with customer, suppliers, and partners. ERP alone is not enough to secure and maintain a superior position in today's economy, but it can provide the backbone and infrastructure of enterprise applications that are the necessary, essential prerequisites to conducting e-business. Whether you are an executive today, or hope to be one in the future, ERP Optimization gives you the tools to lead your organization successfully into the e-business world.

Customer Reviews:
Go-to book for regression analysis.......2005-07-01
Perhaps A.H. Studenmund wrote his book for economics students, but as a biomedical scientist, Using Econometrics is my go-to reference for applied regression analysis, period. I know of no other book on the subject that is more understandable, succinct and eaisly applied to real-world problems.
Very understandable introduction to econometrics.......2004-07-01
First of all I will admit, this is the only book I have read for econometrics. It was the book chosen by my professor for my eonometrics class while doing my undergraduate in economics. Having said that I recommend the book. I feel that it is a very good intro to a subject that can get weighted down in technical difficulties for the beginning student. Some people have complained about its lack of rigor or lack of proofs but I feel that is unjustified because all it really does is utilize statistical principles for economics. At my university, and I would assume most, stats was a prereq for this course and in stats you should cover the real nuts and bolts of statistical theory. This would give you your proofs and underlying understanding of the hands on approach this book gives for econometrics. I think that this book is good in that it does give, as it says, a practical guide to econometrics enabling the student to move on to the more analytically rigorous studies of the field. It doesn't overwhelm but leaves you with a foundational sense of understanding.
Fulfil expectations.......2003-07-09
That book goes straight to the point. First, the title of the book is 100% appropriate. It is about how to use econometrical tools in practice. Second, exercises are E-views oriented, which is also a good point given the user-friendly E-views interface. This book is a very good introductory book for applied econometrics. I've read some reviews criticizing the book for its novice approach and lack of theoretical ground. Well, I would have done so too IF AN ONLY IF the book title had been "Advanced Theory in Econometrics". But it is not!
Good Starting Point for Econometrics.......2003-05-31
In 2000, I wrote a review of this text. I still stand by my assertion that this is an excellent introduction to econometrics. One thing that I failed to mention in my 2000 review is that this book is good for people who have never seen econometrics in their life. Furthermore, don't expect to see proofs, theorems, etc. This book does not emphasize mathematics.
For a good introductory book that does incorporate calculus, some proofs, etc., get Gujarati's "Basic Econometrics" (not to be confused with Gujarati's "Essentials of Econometrics"). If you're only going to have one introductory book, and you want a mathematical treatment, get Gujarati. If you want an introductory book without a mathematical treatment, get Studenmund.
Warning.......2002-12-24
This is to econometrics what Lego is to housebuilding. Harsh, perhaps, but this book should be read as a primer before stepping in to the heavy stuff.

Customer Reviews:
Tough but good book.......2004-01-12
This book is not quite like Draper & Smith or even Cohen & Cohen, but it is very good in its own right. Its appeal is to people with a higher level of quantitative training which may not be present in people with only one undergraduate social science statistics course. The book does have typos, but the book is the first edition-first printing and it is over 700 pages. I found a lot of useful information I could use in my statistical work and learned some different ways at looking at using regression analysis. The book was of great value to me and worth the time spent reading it and thinking about the material presented.
Incredibly bad.......2003-06-14
I sat through a semester of Jed Frees (the author) and his incredibly awful book. The book is the worse edited book I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. Mistakes and errata galore on top of being poorly written in the first place. Do yourself a favor and get Applied Regression Analysis by Norm Draper.
bad to the bone!!!.......2002-08-20
this book is a total waste. I have never seen such poor explanations as I have seen in this book.I can't say how many times I wanted to burn this book. I can not understand why any school would use this book. Its pretty bad...
Awful!.......2000-04-07
The book is a terrible teaching tool. It provides a poor summary of the foundations of statistics. It assumes knowledge in complex disciplines such as Caluclus and Matrix notation. The book uses complex terms to explain complex concepts. It does not make an attempt to explain the material in layman's terms. It lacks clarity and it is not coherent. I found it virtually useless.
Must avoid.......2000-04-05
This is a terrible book, it may work for experts in the field, but for students, this book is not a useful tool
