Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE best book on trading I have ever read........2007-09-09

I had to get this book after reading such a mix of reviews. I was really curious how it would turn out since reviewers were either raving about it or trashing it.

After reading the 1st half of this book I was shocked to say the least. The first half of this book is worth more than all of the books I have read on trading combined. If someone trashes this book then they are either very new to trading and don't understand the points being made in this book(which I can understand because you have to get some experience under your belt to really appreciate what is being said in this book) or they are looking for a quick strategy they can read in 5 minutes and start making money. For one thing, that's never going to happen anyway.

The trading strategies in this book are very basic, so for newbies that part of the book has some good info. I was hoping for a little more advanced analysis of trading techniques, but I really didn't need that anyway. The knowledge and wisdom in the first half of this book is going to take my trading to moon.

For the newbies who didn't like this book, get a couple years experience under your belts then go back to this book and re-read the 1st half. I guarantee you, you will want to come back here and write a positive review.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09

When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.

Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.

In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.

After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).

So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).

Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.

I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".

4 out of 5 stars Seeds of Wisdom!.......2007-05-18

Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.

Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are a rookie or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Sorry, there is no Holy Grail in the stock market you better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all novice trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it sinks in their minds.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27

I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.

and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)

and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"

YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

Book Description

Since the first edition of the Handbook of Alternative Assets was published, significant events—from the popping of the technology bubble and massive accounting scandals to recessions and bear markets—have shifted the financial landscape. These changes have provided author Mark J. P. Anson with an excellent opportunity to examine alternative assets during a different part of the economic cycle than previously observed in the first edition.

Fully revised and updated to reflect today's financial realities, the Handbook of Alternative Assets, Second Edition covers the five major classes of alternative assets—hedge funds, commodity and managed futures, private equity, credit derivatives, and corporate governance—and outlines the strategies you can use to efficiently incorporate these assets into any portfolio. Throughout the book, new chapters have been added, different data sources accessed, and new conclusions reached.

Designed as both an introduction to the world of alternative assets and as a reference for the active investor, the Handbook of Alternative Assets, Second Edition will help you match alternative assets with your various investment goals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-09-01

Nice overview of alternative asset classes. One reference of many we use for research, cross-reference, marketing and new associate education.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2007-08-29

I have to agree with the woman from SC below -- this book is horribly edited. The typos are everywhere, and it is distracting. Authors' names are misspelled, equations are referred to inconsistently, odd commas cause a sentence to be read more than one way. It's really frequent -- you will notice it.

Also, some of the statements are questionable generalizations - e.g. p.100, Anson is quoting a hedge fund document:

Anson:
"Consider the following language from a hedge fund disclosure document.

'The fund's objective is to make investments in public securities that generate a long term return in excess of that generated by the overall US equity market...'

...[T]he manager identifies that it invests in the US public equity market."

In fact, the sentence quoted from the hedge fund document does not state what Anson says, only that the return should exceed the US market, long-run.

Here's another: "Hedge funds tend to have portfolios that are much more concentrated than their mutual fund brethren." p.33.
This may have been true in the 1990s, but circa 2007, this is very questionable.

There are also questionable statements made about portfolio theory: p.21 "Diversification, [comma? sic] is a way to minimize the risk of underperformance, but, at the same time, it minimizes the probability of outperformance."
In fact, diversification's benefit can be divorced from any benchmark, and the conclusion that a reader might be drawn from this (that concentrated managers will outperform more diversified ones with regularity, or are somehow more attractive) is an error. Concentrated managers will simply have higher variance. Diversification decreases the expected variance around the expected return -- it does not necessarily lower the expected return (if you diversify with higher returning investments, your expected return can go up while your expected variance can come down, even if the new investments are more volatile that the old), or the "probability of outperformance", which is not an output of portfolio theory.
A more accurate statement in this context would be that, "As your portfolio converges to the benchmark portfolio, your returns will converge to the benchmark return."

There are honestly other examples of sweeping generalizations that are questionable, or have exceptions that go unmentioned, but I suppose that Wiley wanted to get this thing out the door. It's a little bit of a disappointment that such a high profile author did this - he clearly has a ton of experience.

Here's one more: p. 102
"Generally, process risk is not a risk that investors wish to bear. Nor is it a risk for which they expect to be compensated. How would an investor go about pricing the process risk of a hedge fund manager? It can't be quantified, and it can't be calibrated. There is no way to tell whether an institutional investor is being properly compensated for this risk."
The second sentence here answers the fifth sentence? Since process risk is entirely diversifiable, the proper expected compensation (risk premium) for this risk is simply zero.

There are lots of these. It's just too broad, too sweeping in it's generalizations, which lead to more questions.

3 out of 5 stars Good content, but horribly edited.......2007-07-18

I had to buy this for the CAIA exam. In reading it, I find on average one typo a page. I have found at least one chart misreferenced in the text. It is very distracting. Given that Mr. Anson is on the Curriculum Committee for the exam, it is not surprising that his text is on the list of required readings. Perhaps it is all that is out there. But Shame on Wiley for publishing it in the rough draft that it seems to be.

5 out of 5 stars Clear overview of all 10 Hedge Fund Strategies.......2007-07-06

This book is part of the CAIA exam reading and well worth it. It clearly explains what are some of the strategies put to work by the Hedge Fund managers. Very clearly articulates the similarities and differences between all the 10 possible Hedge Fund strategies (ex: equity long/short, market neutral, convertable arbitrage)

This is the best book on Hedge Funds for someone looking for an overview of the industry.

5 out of 5 stars Truely a Handbook.......2004-02-16

.
I used this book for my preparations towards CAIA Level 1 exam. And I am impressed. Mr. Anson is an authority and this is truely a great book for Alternative Investment aspirants.

If you want to have a very solid grasp of any of the following alternative investment approaches then this is the book you should turn to -

Hedge funds
Commodity and managed futures
Private equity (5 catagories)
....Venture Capital
....LBOs
....Mezzannine Financing
....Distressed Debt

....CrossOver/Interval/PIPE and PEPE funds
Credit derivatives
Corporate Governance

Mr. Anson helps you build strong fundamentals. Actually he clearly explains what constitutes Alternative Assets(Aha !!!) as against fundamental and/or capital assets and what is meant by alternative investment strategies.

This is followed by a rigorous analysis of the topics listed above in that order.

I particularly enjoyed his coverage of Hedge Funds. He explains each of the 10 Hedge Fund strategies in a systematic fashion. From a variety of angles including Market(S&P500), Risk, Regulatory, Due Diligence/Operational/Administrative perspective.

The coverage of Commodity Derivatives is also superb. Although confined to 4 chapters this coverage is sufficient to gain an intermediate level insight into the Commodities.

The coverage for Private Equity is less comprehensive(but good) compared to it's actual scope in real world. I particularly expected a more rigorous coverage for LBOs.

Although I did not touch credit derivatives and CorpGov I could tell you for sure that these topics must have been covered well.
As I read 19 out of 22 chapters.

To put it in a nutshell - This is a very good book for Hedge fund aspirants and prospective Alternative investment professionals.

2 out of 5 stars Simplistic.......2007-05-14

I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for College Students in Business.......2007-03-08

I'm an accountancy major at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This has greatly helped me on my group cases where I write memorandums and other professional communication. Writing hasn't come easily for me (like numbers have) but this book helps me find my weaknesses and gives me suggestions for them. At first I wondered why such a small book was so expensive, but the price is definitely worth it!

1 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor.......2007-03-09

I browsed the book and found the table of contents to contain many interesting topics. With the "surprise me!" function, I happened upon the Sale and Leaseback discussion, a topic with which I am familiar professionally.

In my view, the author completely failed to grasp sale-leaseback decision analysis. Leasing is another form of debt financing (with some nuances), which can be very expensive and administrative. Rating agencies and competent creditors will simply capitalize your lease payments (at the cost of debt) and treat it as debt. It actually reduces your debt capacity, not increase it as the author suggests (in his excess cash example). Also, having idle excess cash to borrow against is expensive as the cost of debt exceeds the returns you can use on cash. And buying shares (i.e. returning capital) to "prop up" the share price is an irresponsible, simplistic and inaccurate view.

The treatment of the topic surprised me. God help the company with a CFO that would think as the author does.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in finance - superb!.......2004-07-14

I found this book very complete and comprehensive as a reference source. It covers the strategic and operational perspectives of the finance function. This is one of the best "CFO" books, together with "CFO Architect" and "CFO Handbook". A little bit overpriced - I would have put it in the US$60 range. Reading this book is like taking an advanced course in preparing yourself for the CFO career. It is very didactic and straightforward. A recommendation for the author: in a future edition, you might consider expanding on the topics of international finance, value based management and corporate restructurings.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've read.......2006-03-17

I am not a CPA or Finance major. I am a physicist so the math is not intimidating. I have been investing as an amateur since retirement and this book gives solid and easily understood ways to get at the valuation of a company and its stock by investigating the financial statements. There is a good comprehensive case study at the end of the book, but I wish the authors would give more examples either within or at the end of each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, but hard to read.......2003-07-08

I did not finish this book because it is written in a very academic and hard to grasp language. Authors, please make your sentences a little shorter and simpler, the book is very boring and verbose! However, I must give credit to the authors for including almost all of the tools one will need for analysis of financial statements.

5 out of 5 stars Each edition of this book just gets better and better!.......2000-06-03

I have bought every edition of this book, and it just keeps getting better and better. As a 25 year veteran of corporate finance, I continue to use this book myself on a regular basis and to recommend it to less experienced employees who are still developing their expertise. Every finance library should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Quickbooks doesn't NEED its own manual..use this one!.......2007-09-24

I am not a professional reviewer, but I needed to comment on the value of this book. I just started my own business and am lost in software land. I heard Quickbooks was the way to go, so, I followed suit and purchased it. Upon recommendation, I took part in the "online tutorials". It helped me learn a few things. "What next?", I inquired. "Use the help menu", was the catty reply. Forget that...I went searching for and found this book. Immediately, I found what I was looking for..Explainations! Examples! Education! Horray! Thank God I found the Missing Manual...

      4 out of 5 stars Effective material.......2007-07-11

I haven't read the book from cover to cover, but instead by using the index and table of contents to find what I am looking for. The book is well laid out and does a very good job of covering the key components of the QuickBooks system.

It's a little more comprehensive that many other books, but that is what I wanted so its a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for nubies.......2006-11-03

Very good book for those just starting out. It goes over the basics of setting up.

I've worked with QB for 7+ years and thought the book was about shortcuts and secrets and workarounds, so I was dissapointed in my choice. My part time assistant finds it invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the non-beancounter.......2006-08-28

This is an excellent book to help you through the tough spots of Quickbooks Pro 2006. Since I am not an Accountant but have used Quicken for many years I am a dedicated Intuit customer (wouldn't touch MS Money for anything). Quickbooks is an excellent product but the learning curve is extensive. However, between "QuickBooks 2006 (Missing Manual)" and "Tax Loopholes for eBay Sellers" by Diane Kennedy I am attacking and winning with Quickbooks

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-07-05
