A tool that can't break!.......2007-01-09
This little book is full of great ideas and concepts and can help you out on the job, but also if you are a person looking to become familar with these concepts, this is a great book to read.
CAN'T BEAT THIS FOR THE PRICE.......2006-05-15
I recently purchased the Lean Pocket Guide (published by MCS Media, Inc. i.e., The Lean Store) and found it to be the most book for your money that is on the market. This book set the standard for good, informative information on Lean. The illustrations and explanations were perfect for the folks on the shop floor, as well as my supervisors.
A Lean book that practices what it preaches!
What you need on the shop floor:-).......2006-03-30
Hello, this little booklet is excellent. You get all information on lean concepts in your palm and right where you need it -not at your desk- but on the shop floor.
Even better would be customized country versions to spread the lean culture widely amongst companies;-))
Regards
Ralf Lippold
OUTSTANDING!.......2005-08-20
The Lean Pocket Guide is undoubtedly the best value Lean book ever written. All the Lean tools are clearly defined, along with good, simple illustrations. The Key Points at the end of each section provide additional insight into Lean applications. All our employees have one of these. It was very rewarding to see - on the day following giving these to our employees (there was an employee that did not particpate very often in our teams) having The Lean Pocket Guide opened on his bench to the Standard Work chapter. I need say no more!
The Greatest Lean Book Ever Written.......2004-09-04
This is by far the best and most comprehensive book on lean terms and concepts in the market. The group of authors certainly understand and know the ins and outs of Lean. The illustrations, graphs, directions, key points are superbly explained like no other book..and I have read them all. Fantastic job authors!

Book Description
The proven, objective, standardized, and complete "how to" sequential series of progressive steps to Lean manufacturing implementation illustrated in this manual are easy to understand and use to effect factory transformation to lean without the aid of a consultant. It also provides a toolbox of techniques for problem - solving, continuous improvement, and for operating a Lean manufacturing facility on a day-to-day basis after the initial line design is completed
Customer Reviews:
An effective guide for new line design.......2005-03-30
This book gives a new insight about the PROCESS and shows some ways to optimally design it with minimum wastage. The concepts described here is not just limited to the manufacturing process but extends to any other business process. Consideration of the resources in Man , Machine , Workstation and Inventory sets a well-defined boundary of constraint for designing new production line.
Not only for the new line , few of the concepts of this book can be applied for optimization of the old production lines also.
As a whole this book is a good investment which can be used as guidelines for new line design and improvement of the old line.
From a Lean Manufacturing Engineer.......2004-12-04
This treatment of Lean Manufacturing is written from the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) viewpoint. The center of the manufacturing world for the production control dept. is the MRP software which makes this viewpoint on Lean interesting, especially since two of the major advantages of implementing Lean is to reduce inventories and to eliminate production control department overhead. The only requirements for MRP in a lean environment are long term raw material scheduling and finished product delivery scheduling.
Hobbs does not establish the roots of Lean (The Toyota Production System) nor does he use Japanese lean terms with the exeption of Kanban and Kaizen. Nor does he recognize the existence of the value stream map (VSM) choosing to use the process flow diagram (PFD) to define the manufacturing process. Thus Hobbs only defines process level manufacturing data and totally ignores the systems approach to lean Manufacturing. As a result the Lean Enterprise, total lead time, and how the manufacturing process relates to the whole value stream are not even adddressed. He is, however, quick to use total lead time in his so called 'Strategic Business Analysis'. Finally, the key concept of pull/flow production control is not fully compared to push/MRP production control. Herein lies the proof that pull/flow is superior.
This is the only treatment of lean manufacturing I have found that espouses providing for scrap and rework in the manufacturing process. There is no jidoka even mentioned.
Somehow the term 'MRP' shows up on almost every page. This book should be labeled 'In Defense of MRP'.
There is no bibliography - all original?

Lean Secrets.......2004-09-21
It is very unusual when a consultant reveals their secrets to implementation concepts. Dennis Hobbs tells how to implement lean on a step by step basis. The secrets of kanban calculation in addition to line balancing are exposed. This book is a critical resource for companies interested in conducting their own lean implementations. Dennis provides detailed explanations and not just lean stories that fail to get to the real issues of how to implement the concepts.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!.......2004-07-24
So call "LEAN Manufacturing Implementation" title is very appealing. Very bad decision buying this book. I have several other books on the subject. From Mr. Pyzdek to Womack (warranted satisfacton with this guy's book) and some other japanese authors on the subject. I paid $6.00 for the book "The machine that changed the world" I learned more reading this book. This book is highly priced. Shame on APICS backing up this kinda of got-to-write-a-book authors. I hope the author could read this comentary and give me money back. This book is just the product of somebody not enought professional to accept HE CAN'T WRITE A BOOK ON THE SUBJECT. Very repetitive, boring. Anyways...!!!
Excellent How-To Guide.......2004-01-09
I have been looking long and hard for a simple, step-by-step guide to implementing Lean methodologies in my facility and I have finally found it. Most of the Lean books I've seen up to this point discuss high-level concepts, without detailing the steps and tools needed to put the strategy into practice. However, this book (more of a "how-to" manual, really) outlines all the tasks needed to move from a traditional batch manufacturing system to a Lean environment.
It covers everything from project scoping to line design to Kanban materials movement systems. Not only that, the author provides all the tools (formulas, charts, project management tips, etc.) to guide you through the process. He's also provided methods, like the daily resource planning tool, that help you manage the line after the Lean processes are up and running.
I'm using the guide now for my line reconfiguration, and have gotten it for everyone on my implementation team. This book is good for any manufacturer that is planning to implement Lean, but doesn't have a plan for how to go about it.
Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
A quick way to an estimate........2007-06-11
The Assemblies Cost Data method is a reliable and fairly quick way to generate an estimate. This is especially helpful if you want to compare the costs of different construction types (i.e. steel, pre-cast, cast-in-place). However, I found that I still needed the information in the more detailed Construction Cost Data book to fill in missing items, like demolition, louvers, or ceiling insulation.
Means Cost Assemblies is Super Info! A lot more than prices.......2000-09-07
This book is great for those of us just starting out in construction - it breaks down each system so that you may price the pieces individually or as an entire system price.
It's really great if you don't know what you should be looking for in a complete system. For example, what goes into a stem wall - this book explains it, and then prices each individual part. Great resource!

Customer Reviews:
I didn't think I needed it, and then . . ........2007-05-24
I'm a sole proprietor, and I didn't think this book had much for me. Until, of course, I needed to hire a part-time assistant. I found some great advice on how to screen resumes, set up interviews, and research candidates. This book had exactly the information I needed, and it was easy to find and easy to use. What a fabulous resource!
Small Business Book Of Lists.......2006-10-09
Some one has finally done it. Someone has put together a book of just about all of the business advice you will ever need and from a group of business experts as varied as business itself. The Small Business Book of Lists edited by Gene Marks is probably the best deal in business books at this time. What Marks has done is gather list from industry experts all over the country to help the reader find just about all the advice he or she needs about anything from starting a business to handling your taxes, to handling your sales to even a section on day by day operations.
Here are a couple of my favorites: In the chapter called Where you Work, the section called The Road Warrior there are tips on subjects like Finding the cheapest airfares, which lists the web sites to go to get the best rates; then there is a section evaluating the best frequent flyer programs, as well a particularly intriguing section on getting the best rental car rates. This includes the very logical tip that if you rent a smoke free car, it will be newer and cleaner car and most importantly you will increase your odds of getting a free upgrade because non-smoking cars are in high demand.
Then there are lists on: how and when you need a board of directors; How to get the most from your sales people. And one that I really liked, the Top Tax Schemes identified by the IRS: a crack down on off shore transactions and the ever popular "zero return" where evaders enter all zeros on their returns including zero income and the write now and then" in Latin when reporting their withholding. I like to know how that works!
There is even a "Geek" section dedicated to technology including a list evaluating the best high tech equipment to purchase and why; costs of an e-commerce site and considerations in choosing a web hosting company.
Finally there is a greats section on collections one of our least favorite but most important subjects. This section alone will pay for the book.
Good stuff; interesting and easy to use. And for just shy of twenty bucks a real good deal;
In fact a great value and a must for your personal business library.
Best reference a small business could have!.......2006-09-02
This is the best reference a small business could have! Covers all essential areas. A wealth of resources.
This book of lists is more than just a series of lists! What a goldmine of info........2006-08-31
Oh my gosh! What a book! I wish I had been the one to outline and compile it. With 100's of lists to help a wanta-be entrepreneur put together her business plan or small business owner to increase revenues or boost profits, this book is a goldmine.
The book includes eight chapters as follows:
1. Starting Up
2. High Finance
3. Where You Work
4. Day to Day
5. Your Taxes
6. The Geek Section
7. Your Customers & Prospects
8. Your People
I particularly like the lists under "Starting Your Business" starting at page 21 which included information about Choice of Legal Entity considerations. Also included there is great information about preparing business plans.
I was surprised to learn that New Jersey, my home state, ranks #7 in the "Top States for New Business Formation" list at page 69.
I could go on and on about the content included in this book. It is 661 pages long and packed full of helpful information that is not always easy to find elsewhere. If you are involved in small business in some capacity, then do yourself a favor by getting this book. 5 stars!

A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers.......2000-02-12
I teach Product Design Engineering at Ohio State and I can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful info on just about any manufacturing process you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapters on Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it. The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful information packed into it, it's a steal. Bralla far exceeds McGraw-Hill's regrettably low standards for their handbooks - this one is a keeper!

The Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Small Business: Low-Cost/High Return Tools and Techniques that Really Work.......2007-07-16
The Ultimate Electronic Marketing for Small Business is the non-techies' guide to marketing on the internet. This book takes the reader through the basics of getting his or her own domain, finding someone to design a website, and creating dazzling website copy that will not only draw customers to their website but also encourages potential customers to spend money. Among the most emphasized topics are the benefits of viral marketing methods such email lists, newsletters, and free ebooks.
The Ultimate Electronic Marketing for Small Business takes a bit different approach from other internet marketing books. Most books of this type assume that the small business entrepreneur will be creating their business themselves from building the website through all aspects of promotions and sales. This book, however, illustrates that you can find individuals with specialized skills such as website design and ghostwriting to create professional results without spending a fortune. Moreover, in handing over these tasks, the entrepreneur can spend more time on activities that actually draw in more money. I personally like the hands on aspect of website design and writing but I respect that not everyone enjoys these tasks. Therefore, I believe that the hints in this book could be beneficial to those individuals.
fundamentally sound book.......2007-04-07
Ok - This book is not full of the most advanced strategies out their.
But they are the basics you must know if you want to survive
on the internet. You know I built a multi-million dollar online
business off the principles inside this book. When I played sports
my coach always said get back to the fundamentals. This book is a
fundamentally sound book. I've known Tom for a few years now.
He's a great guy and has a huge heart. You never can go wrong
with him. My clients that have worked with him love him to death
because of the success they achieved with his guidance.
I'd go grab this book now and not waste another sec longer.

This book simply delivers!.......2007-03-18
Anyone in business, who has a website, is thinking about having one, wonders why some websites work and some don't, or has any interest in Internet commerce should buy this book.
Most websites, quite frankly, suck. They might be beautiful and artful at best, but they are "brochure-wear" - mine originally was. It replaced the need for a paper brochure, and like a brochure, almost no one read it. Certainly random web surfers and searchers, no matter how interested they might have been, rarely found it. I gradually got my site working like an effective website should, and it's getting better fast with this book's help. I wish I had The Ultimate Guide years ago when I launched my site!
Tom breaks his strategy into three prongs, and even if you are interested in only one or two this book has enough value that you probably need it.
Prong #1: Build a great website. A great website, among other things, is ones the search engines love and send you people who will be happy to find it.
Prong #2: Build an email list of people who want to hear from you. Periodically send them things of value, for example a useful ezine/enewsletter.
Prong #3: Develop and sell information products. It doesn't matter what your main business may be, having some low cost (and up) products so people who like your "free stuff" can see how good your "non-free stuff is." If, as in my example, you are a consultant and speaker, people who buy products for maybe $20-$100 will be more likely to hire you for your normal fees. It's a BIG leap of faith for someone to hire you for consulting or to deliver a keynote speech, i.e. for thousands of dollars, as their first transaction with you!
I knew Tom Antion existed for a while. I'm wary of most Internet marketers and gurus, because most of them are full of nonsense. Tom, and his book, delivers.
Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Small Business.......2006-11-18
You won't find "fluff" in Tom Antion's book. It is jam packed with great ideas and is a definate desk reference.
I would advise reading this book all the way through, then go back and re-read the book with an ink pen in-hand, so that you can make note of the information and ideas that will assist your internet marketing goals.

Internet Marketing - almost everything YOU need to know!.......2006-05-25
I'm surprised there have been some mixed reviews here. OK, Tom Antion is not talking rocket science (to coin a phrase) but there is an abundance of good motivational information in this book.
Sure, there are a lot of links throughout the book which are affiliate links .. but we're talking business here. If anything, these give further impetus to be a bit more enterprising, and understand that people are primarily wanting useful information.
This book doesn't include all the latest marketing gizmos. But this is definitely worth reading, at least several times, by anyone who is serious about wanting to make money on the Internet. And this book proves it can be done, provided you're prepared to put in the time and effort. My impression is that Tom genuinely wants to help other people who want to help themselves.
