Chapter 1.......2007-09-26
I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...
My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...
I think she found her answer :)
Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29
This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.
A Must Read.......2007-08-28
I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.
I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10
When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.
After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.
Borderline Personality Disorder.......2007-06-06
This book is a good introduction to BPD for the lay person. It is not the final word for a clinical professional. Should be read with the understanding that there are gradations of BPD, as exists among all mental illnesses.

Book Description
The Great Bust Ahead is a concise, straight to the point book laying out in stark terms the case for a coming depression of historically unprecedented magnitude. It will be much worse than the 1930s, beginning perhaps as early as 2009-2010, and last up to thirteen years. Centered on hard fact demographics, the book boldly claims that the data presented are so irrefutable, that the outcome predicted by the book is equally as irrefutable. The compelling proof presented accurately accounts for the detailed trend of the economy from 1920 to today (something never before accomplished), and projects out to 2030 in detail. The book is very easy to read and understand, and requires no prior knowledge of economics. Down to earth things the average person can do to prepare for what is coming are covered. A summary of the catastrophic domestic social and international consequences is offered.
2006 Update: In late 2002 when this book was published, in addition to the massive depression beginning towards the end of the decade, it forecast:
1. The economy, as reflected by the DJIA, would resume its upwards march in late 2002 or 2003.
This is exactly what happened.
2. The DJIA would have a snap-back to 13,000 to 14,000 and the FTSE to 6,000 to 7,000 by 2004, but delayed possibly by wars/politics/terrorism/scandals.
This is exactly what has happened. Although still delayed from the full snap-back for the reasons described, the DJIA is now over 12,000 and the FTSE is over 6,000.
3. The inflation adjusted DJIA returns from 2003 to 2012 would average 7% to 8%. So far, with the delayed full snap-back, inflation adjusted DJIA returns have averaged a more modest 4%, as would be expected.
4. Interest rates would increase from 2003 onwards.
This is exactly what has happened.
Customer Reviews:
It is just an indicator!.......2007-09-12
Everyone is forgetting that the book is talking about a correlated indicator for the DJIA. There are many things that drive an economy and make things happen like the weakening dollar, monstrous deficits, the Federal Reserve, cheap credit and the housing market bubble, peak oil, etc. These are some of the things that move the DJIA, NOT just demographics. The fact that the 45-54 age group correlates to the DJIA is very interesting and CAN be used to predict what MAY happen to the DJIA in the long term. Demographics of the 45-54 age groups are a strong force pushing the markets, but not the only thing. Even the author says that some things like "the New Deal, the pill and the NASDAQ" affect the correlation with this indicator. The politicians and Wall Street are not going to lie down and let this monstrous depression happen without a fight. They my not win the War, but where the DJIA goes in the future has not been case in stone. The future highs and lows of the DJIA are still unpredictable.
The book is a high school treatise on this relationship and to the economically ignorant is a real eye opener. Most economists know about this force, but the key is what to do about it and when. The author's advice to get out of the markets by 2010 is silly at best. We are now in September of 2007 and the housing market bubble burst is probably the beginning of the down turn of the markets. Wait until 2010 to protect your assets and you will far less assets to protect. The author's advice to sell your home and rent and plow your money into bonds is simplistic at best. Investing in gold, foreign currencies, TIPS etc. to protect your assets are other stratigies that are not addressed. We are all speeding towards this economic depression, but the answers to when it will happen and what to do about protecting your assets is NOT even close to being addressed by this book. The book is $8.95 and you get what you pay for, "a wakeup call for the economically ignorant". Read the book and move onto a more advanced book for a better in depth discussion on economics and your money like "The Second Great Depression (Paperback) by Warren Brussee (Author)". I do agree that a lot of pain is ahead for the world.
Not Bad But Too Short and Too Extreme.......2007-08-22
Let me start by saying that this is a pretty good book for the price and if you don't know what is going on in the economy. The problem is that the book has very limited data to back up the predictions. If you are going to make huge predictions you had better justify it with a lot of credible data that has been referenced. As well, some of the predictions are just too extreme. However, all of these shortcomings aside, the author provides a nice short treatment on what will most likely occur; just not to the extent he has presented in my opinion. Of course, opinions are like debt in America - everyone has their own!
A much more useful book in my opinion is "Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble." It not only shows you many different ways to profit from the current bubble collapse, but it also shows a lot of detail about the economy and how to profit from America's overall credit bubble. Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble
Interesting theory but..........2007-07-09
This book is short and easy to read. The author has an interesting concept that the stock market follows the number of Americans at their peak buying age. His graphs and explanations on modifying factors make everything fit. I agree that some correction of our economy (inflation, recession, or worse) is likely in the future, but I feel other factors (energy issues, our national debt, terrorism, etc.) will come into play that he has not taken into account. I also don't agree with his investment suggestions and feel they may be reckless.
If you're concerned about possible bad times ahead, this is one book that may helpful, but I better liked the reasoning and proposals on what to do in Stephen Leeb's book The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs 200 Dollars a Barrel.
Excellent Read.......2007-05-14
Pros:
1. Brief: to the point, no fluff book(let)
2. Logical: Numbers support theory all along
3. Simple: Easy to understand
4. Value: Could save your shirt
Cons:
1. May sound too negative
2. May not consider all factors into forecasting
Pretty interesting read.......2007-05-12
This book and the argument that it lays out is pretty eye-opening. It shows you, through logical argument, how the demographics of our country will impact our coming future economic health. With these baby-boomers greying and falling from their peak spending years, our country will experience a downshift that will really challenge our concept of prosperity... A must read!

Customer Reviews:
Too much Poetry.......2001-07-13
It is amazing how the authors can write so many paragraphs which mean so little. This book could have half of the pages it contains. Not worth the price.
Building Value-Based Sales Tools.......2000-05-21
One of the most important take-a-ways from this book is the idea of coupling consultative selling techniques with a value model...to re-position your firm and its product offering. Its a must read for manufacturers who are perceived to be producing commodity products.
An Outstanding approach to marketing based on value..........1999-04-20
You know a book is having an extradinary effect when you see managers walking the halls with it -- postits coming out of every corner -- saying things like "This is my Bible..." Based on a significant amount of field research, this book has got real insighnts you can use in getting down to what customers really, really value -- and will pay for. A new "must read" for everyone in Business-to-Business Marketing
Outstanding -- Packed with insight on understanding value.......1999-02-16
In the business of business-to-business marketing, getting to the real value of your offerings, and designing offerings of real value, can be the key to siginifcant profitability vs. going along for a "commodity price" ride. Anderson and Narus have obviously done lots of field work in the real world of the business-to-business marketplace to pull actionable ideas together for those in the practice. A "must-read" for anyone in business-to -business -- outstanding.
A complete cohesive view of b-to-b marketing management.......1999-01-20
Business marketing is not my strong suit, but this book really brought some things together for me. It's readable, focused, and definitely gives you a hook to hang things on--one way to view the world of busines-to-business marketing that makes sense. I teach electronic marketing, and have more familiarity with the consumer side. After reading this book, I felt a much better grounding of essential b-to-b concepts like the value chain. I strongly recommend this book.

Book Description
Winner ForeWord Magazine Bronze Award for Best Business/Economics Book of the Year. This investment book uses extensive full-color graphics to explain the fundamentals of the markets-an essential resource before reading how-to books or engaging investment advice. It is a unique combination of investment art and investment science that enables the reader to differentiate between irrational hope and a rational view of current market conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the Non Financial Dude.......2007-06-27
I am not in the financial business, but purchased this book to help me just understand the market for my 401K and mutual funds. After reading it I am starting to feel like I have an understanding of what I'm looking for to start to purchase stocks in companies. This book explained everything perfect.
Good Concepts, But Goes Astray.......2007-06-11
Unexpected return has an excellent compilation of historical data and does a good job of presenting the case for secular bull and bear markets and the components that influence market results over the longer term. However, it goes badly when the author attempts to provide a formula to predict the future market. I read this book in early 2007. If you had followed the authors predictions, you would have missed out on close to a 20% increase in the market (inlcuding dividends) from the time he wrote it. That is the risk you take when trying to simply apply regression analysis to the future (remember the demise of Long-Term Capital Management!). Overall, I would still read the book for historical content and perspective, but if you think you can predict the market with simple formulas ... forget it.
Past history is indication of future results.......2007-03-21
Excellent book on the market. It is not a 'How to get rich fast' book, but one that explains the dynamics of the stock market and how the returns correlate.
The tables, graphs, and figures are extremely well done and the book is well laid out.
If you want to learn about the market (or playing field of the market) this is the book for you. It re-enforced a lot of the views of the market for me.
One of the best.......2007-03-16
This is a book that was referred to me on the chatroom at Dorsey Wright Associates. [...] you can view his information. I am a CFP, CIMC and have an MBA infinance form Pepperdine University CA. The information is layed out so anyone can understand it. Yes I do make recommendations on where the risk is in the market and how to avoid most of that risk. Dorsey Wright helps in that regurd.

[...]
Don't Buy and Hold, Says Ed Easterling.......2006-11-26
Ed Easterling's "Unexpected Returns: Understanding Secular Stock Market Cycles"(2005)deals with the issue of bullish and bearish "seasons" in the stock market--such as the U.S. bear markets of 1901 to 1920, 1929-1932(the Great Crash)and 1966 to 1981 and bull markets from 1921 to 1928 (the Roaring 20's)and 1982 to 1999.
Easterling's somewhat dry title belies a rich and important book. Here is the argument in a nutshell:
For the investment horizons that matter to most investors, the time of entry and exit is critical. More specifically, buying into a market with a low price/earnings (P/E) ratio average and selling into a market with a high average P/E has produces by far the best returns, both absolutely and relatively, as well as the most favorable dispersion of returns and the fewest negative return periods.
Average P/E's rise (leading to outsize investment returns) when the economy moves toward a persistent low rate of inflation, of which about 1% per annum is optimal, from either a high level of inflation or deflation. [The same trend that is bullish for stocks is also bullish for bonds, an asset class that Easterling also treats, but with less detail than stocks.] In such an environment, the increasing P/E's attached to stocks multiply the effects of rising market earnings.
These findings imply says Easterling, an activist investment strategy: "rowing," not "sailing." An investor must make strenuous efforts to respond to prevailing market conditions. As a rule of thumb, average P/E's in the 20 times plus area (such as the U.S. equity market now sports) are not sustainable for long except under ideal conditions. On the other hand, market average P/E's of around 10 times or lower present a compelling opportunity for entry.
One problem facing those who would follow Easterling is that it may be difficult while in the midst of a long-term cycle to know when it is reaching a turning point. That will only be obvious in retrospect. Then too, many investors will not feel the luxury to stay out of the market for very long periods or to go short. The practice of spreading constant investment amounts over time intervals, called "dollar cost averaging," may in part address these issues.
Easterling made the prediction in his book, released in April 2005, that then prevailing P/E's implied a coming period of lackluster returns in U.S. stock averages.
Easterling acknowledges his debt to Robert Schiller of Yale for source data and data series method. His thesis is consistent with Schiller's cautionary views and provides an important corrective to the optimistic gloss of Jeremy Siegel's "Stocks for the Long Run," at least for investment horizons going out to about 20 years. Siegel's work remains valid and important to understand for those with investment horizons going out longer than this, as well as for those to whom the criterion is not optimal timing but rather probable outpeformance of stocks compared to alternative investment in US Treasury bills and bonds.
Easterling founded and is president of Crestmont Holdings, LLC, a Dallas-based fund of hedge funds manager. He publishes research at his CrestmontResearch site. The author believes his loftily named "financial physics" lend support to a diversified fund of funds strategy--an investment approach he lauds, while giving scant attention to the heavy burden of overhead costs it generally entails.

What makes people kill? Specifically, what are the motivations behind serial, mass, and spree killings? Drawing from cases such as the mass murder in Dunblane, Scotland, in which a lone gunman mowed down 16 children and their teacher, the still-unsolved Tylenol poisonings, and the Unabomber, former FBI profiler John Douglas and coauthor Mark Olshaker try to explain the unthinkable. What sets The Anatomy of Motive apart from so many of the theories about these horrific acts of violence is that Douglas and Olshaker have no obvious political agenda. They don't look for easy answers and they don't provide easy solutions. They do, however, offer some insight into the twisted kind of thinking that can lead a person to believe that the solution to his problems lies in bloodshed. They also provide some danger signs that may help to identify the potentially violent criminal before he has a chance to act out his morbid fantasies. While The Anatomy of Motive is undeniably horrifying, it is also illuminating, and Douglas and Olshaker approach their topic with grace and insight. --Lisa Higgins
Book Description
From legendary FBI profiler John Douglas and Mark Olshaker -- authors of the nonfiction international bestsellers Mindhunter, Journey into Darkness, and Obsession -- comes an unprecedented, insightful look at the root of all crime.
Every crime is a mystery story with a motive at its heart. With the brilliant insight he brought to his renowned work inside the FBI's elite serial-crime unit, John Douglas pieces together motives behind violent sociopathic behavior. He not only takes us into the darkest recesses of the minds of arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, assassins, serial killers, and mass murderers, but also the seemingly ordinary people who suddenly kill their families or go on a rampage in the workplace.
Douglas identifies the antisocial personality, showing surprising similarities and differences among various types of deadly offenders. He also tracks the progressive escalation of those criminals' sociopathic behavior. His analysis of such diverse killers as Lee Harvey Oswald, Theodore Kaczynski, and Timothy McVeigh is gripping, but more importantly, helps us learn how to anticipate potential violent behavior before it's too late.

Customer Reviews:
Inside Smoldering Minds.......2006-09-04
This is an engrossing book that was ahead of its time in presenting the often seamy, often searching field of forensic science. Douglas brings us onto the crime scene, and gives us a view through the eyes of profilers, pathologists, analyzers, and detectives.
The only fault I find with the book is its general contention that criminals choose their behavior. Without rehashing the nature vs. nurture controversy too much, a consideration of some of the possible physiological factors influencing criminals might have led to a more three-dimensional view of the criminal mind.
Douglas uses the fact that an offender can almost always restrain himself from committing a crime while a policeman is watching him as proof that virtually all criminal behavior is under the individual's control. I can't help but think though of the somewhat parallel condition of people with disorders such as Tourette's Syndrome. Tourette's sufferers can at times reduce or even eliminate their ticcing behavior when they are briefly in public. But their tics will return all the more insistently when they are alone again. So a criminal's ability to briefly control himself isn't necessarily an indication that he can always control himself.
A compulsive element seems to be especially apparent in crimes such as arson, which Douglas is often at his best discussing. He links this crime to a desire to command and manipulate. The arsonist gets the satisfaction of watching a whole slew of people, firemen and victims alike, scurrying around as a result of the problem he has created.
However, as Douglas himself reveals, there is also often some physically-rooted obsession that goads pyromaniacs. Douglas presents the case of Peter George Dinsdale in England for instance. This man was an epileptic who would set fires after he experienced a tingling in his fingers followed by some triggering, often trivial, altercation with his victims. This description also left me wondering if the flickering of flames might produce a more markedly pleasurable, fixating trance-like state in some people than in others.
A variety of criminal acts that Douglas describes center around fetishes and fanaticisms that might similarly have some neurological quirk as their basis.
Overall though, Douglas does a fine job of putting his readers on the trail of the criminal. He brings Sherlock Holmes onto current crime scenes by illustrating how a forensic scientist's work boils down to details - attention to details. He cites the case of arson in which a Torah was purposefully burned from right to left - cluing the detectives into the fact that the perpetrator must have been someone with a knowledge of Hebrew.
And like Holmes' classic clue of the dog that didn't bark, Douglas alerts us to the importance of details that are not there. Such observations are often important in insurance cases. When someone burns his own property for money, he will often remove items of special sentimental value first. If there are no family photo albums left in the ashes - that's a clue.
This book reminds us that no detail is trivial or uninteresting. Any mote might have a story to tell. If we could approach life from the viewpoint of the forensic scientists in these pages - we would never be bored.
A trip to a very dark place.......2006-03-17
When it comes to bringing serial crime psychology and profiling to a level that a layperson can understand, Douglas is peerless. He identifies several different types of serial killers and includes true-life stories of a few he's dealt with in his decades with the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. It's an engrossing, easily understandable and fascinating read.
Not as riveting as I expected.......2006-02-03
When I saw this book in a used book store, I thought the title was "Anatomy of Murder". Only later did I see that it was "Motive". Based on Douglas' other books about serial killers, I expected this book to deal strictly with serial killers. And it did not.
Douglas' book described a range of killers; and his chapters are broken down accordingly. There are chapters on the anatomy of arsonists; people who use guns to commit crimes; those who poison and why; and other chapters ranging from guys who simply snap to those who commit random violence.
I wasn't really interested in serial arsonists so I skipped that chapter. The rest of the book was interesting but I think the chapters would have been much better if Douglas had focused on one or two specific cases rather than telling us snippets of several cases.
Would I read this book again? Probably not. Several of his other books are better.
The Best in the Series.......2005-09-18
Real info and facts on serial killers. The behind the scenes look at the killers that we don't get from the news. An excellent and well-written book. Also check out Robert Ressler's books.
An intregueing read.......2005-03-30
The criminal mind is a mysterious thing. The anatomy of a motive is a look the mind of criminals. It goes thru cases in the career of John Douglass. This book explores the mind of everything from your serial arsonists to your serial killer.
John Douglas was a criminal profiler for the FBI for over 20 years. He's one of the greatest criminal profilers in history. He's also been able to write many books on what he knows about the profiling of criminals. The work he's done in his career has led to the arrest of many of the worlds most dangerous criminals.
The anatomy of a motive starts out when John talks about a period during his time in the FBI where he went around interviewing criminals. Many criminals would try to talk themselves up and show off who they were. Many of them would lie and talk about things they may or may not have done. It took John much effort to get past this to get what he wanted from the people he interviewed. He said that criminals I (p. 22)"main goals in life are to kill and to hurt- or as I've stated many times in my career, to manipulate, dominate, and control."
We then come to the issue of fire in chapter two "Playing with Fire." He explore's the mind of your arsonists. He goes into the idea that many criminals early in life will play with fire. They will also have other traits in common with each other. They usually have (p.47) "violent, antisocial tendencies often mistreat animals or smaller children. This chapter goes into the arsonists as sort of a "ticking time bomb." They will set fire after fire and if they don't get caught they will become more daring. They will take more risks and eventually evolve into a killer if not stopped. He also states how many of these arsonists will start out in a place they are comfortable in only. They won't go out of their "comfort zone" until they believe they are comfortable doing so. This was a major thing in the world of tracking criminals. That means they can look around the area where the fire starting began (or other crimes as it turns out) and get an idea who they might be looking for.
"Magnum Force" explores the idea of guns used in crimes. Many criminals get there ideas from other things such as kojack In one case two air force enlisted men tied up and tried to poison some people in a Hi-Fi shop. They tried using poison and it didn't work like it did in the movies. They eventually had to some of them because the poison didn't work fast enough.
In "Name your Poison" the book goes into poisoning by tampering. It goes into adding poisonous pills to a Tylenol bottle. This led all drugs to be covered with a safety seal. In this chapter John talks about the Tylenol poisoner as someone who was proud of what they were doing. John figured this UNSUB was a passive person who would be afraid of confrontation. He was also able to figure that this offender wasn't that organized or methodical about his poisonings. He would just introduce a cyanide capsule to a bottle and put it back on the shelf. John eventually came up with an accurate profile of the Tylenol UNSUB. John was able to get the UNSUB out by getting him to write letters into a newspaper about his opinions and what he hated about society.
"Guys Who Snap", "On the Run" and "Shadow of a Gunman" all run along the same area and are about people who one day just can't take it anymore and snap. They snap for a number of reasons. They may have lost their job. Maybe their wife/husband left them. Or maybe they just realized there life is at a dead end. They see they aren't really going anywhere. Once they can no longer deal with the idea they won't achieve the great things they have always wanted to receive they decide to either relinquish their current situation and move on or go out in a blaze of glory. One UNSUB in this section for example, kills his whole family and quietly sneaks away to start life anew. Another UNSUB realizes that life is doomed for him and decides to go out in a blaze of glory by getting on top of a building and trying to take out as many people as he can with him. He had no plans to escape this situation. He just wanted to not go out alone. In a story of Brad Bishop who kills and burns the bodies of his family, he wants to start a new life somewhere else. He goes onto do so and is eventually caught. He never wanted to kill his family, but felt that he had to.
"Shadow of a Gunman" also goes into killers who have obsessions with weapons. Many usually have large collections. At some point they just snap and decide to go out in the blaze of glory and kill whatever they can, using what they have and know about they're weapons.
In "Random Acts of Violence" John goes into the idea of random violence. A mail bomber mails bombs to random members of the academic community. Many of his devices will either kill or extremely mangle his victims. As he progress's in his killings his bomb style becomes his "calling card." The UNSUB also likes to show how he's evolved as he goes on in his bombings. His bombs get a little better every time. This offender is a well educated person who knows a great deal. This person is also patient and willing to put in a great amount of time in constructing his weapons. This chapter also goes into the Unabomber. It talks about Timothy Mcveigh and about how he's always been a loner who liked doing things alone. He was a quiet and passive person who couldn't confront someone face to face.
The book ends with a summary type chapter called "You Make the Call." This chapter has a few examples of cases talked about in earlier chapters and asks that you make the call and eventually tells you the answers on whether your assessment was right or not.
The Anatomy of a Motive was an intriguing look into the way killers think. It will give you multiple examples of how criminals work. It explores the development of a criminal. It can give you an idea of how to profile a criminal. After reading this book I believe I could accurately profile many people. If you know the way someone was killed or the way the crime was committed you can learn everything you need to know about the person who did it. You can get a personality profile just by looking at the case. In many cases you can tell if the UNSUB was associated in any way with the victims. You can tell if this person was passive and afraid of confrontation. You can also see if the UNSUB will be around the crime scene and will want to witness his/her work. This book can benefit criminal profilers and even someone who enjoys things such as "America's Most Wanted." This book is quite strong in areas such as arson and murder. It falls short to me in areas such as rape, and burglary. This book is a great look into how FBI profilers think and a look at some of the cases that they can see everyday. It explains how many criminals think and where they get they're start. If we listen to the people in our lives who appear to be on edge and befriend those who look like they're all alone, criminals will eventually cease to exists and the world will be a better place for the future generations.

Failed Potential.......2007-03-12
This book would have been 5 stars if it had been edited and proofed properly. There are *FAR* too many errors. I would still recommend that one purchase and read this book, which is a good introduction to VaR for the uninitiated, but the error count is just ridiculous. There are significant errors nearly every other page.
There are:
* currency sign errors, which render examples meaningless;
* repeated formula errors, which require the reader to guess the correct formula;
* text errors, which change the meaning of the sentences to their exact opposite;
* errors in punctuation;
* errors in grammar;
* numerical errors in the text next to examples that show the correct numbers.
If there were going to have been a second edition, it would already be out by now, so I'm not hopeful that a new edition will appear to correct the many errors.
I am QUITE surprised that the author doesn't have an errata page at the website he put up for questions on this book at [...]
File this book under "Failed Potential".
Very helpful for beginners.......2006-03-20
I'm chemical Engineer and I'm working on my thesis on to get the Master in Sc. I had no clue in VaR, this book help not only to understand it but to apply it further pure finances.
Until something better comes along. . ........2005-07-19
The other reviewers are correct about the errors. The results of Mr. Butler's formulas sometimes don't match the formulas themselves which in turn don't match his results in the spreadsheets. Also, the grammar, particularly the punctuation, leaves much to be desired. This book had either a poor editor or no editor.
However, Mr. Butler is the only author to write a book that shows actual real-world VaR calculations. The other books give plenty of theory, but never enough detail to enable you to do your own VaR calculations. So until something similar and better comes along, this book will have to do. And really, the errors in the spreadsheets are not that hard to spot if you just follow the text and if you are aware that the errors are there.
very disappointing.......2004-06-25
There are a number of errors in the book, thus making it very hard to get through. Additionally, I spoke to the publisher and there is NOT a second edition of this book available yet - so don't bother with the book. I was also surprised there is nowhere to get copies of the spreadsheets from on the web!!
A note to Mr. Butler - please take a note from Scott Meyers or Bruce Eckel who publish errata web pages.
A practical book on VaR.......2002-09-29
Mastering Value at Risk is 80% practical and 20% theoretical. However, there are a lot of mistakes, specially printing and calculation mistakes. For example, page 24, 25, etc. ambiguous exercises. I require professional solved cases and applications of the real world. Back testing and stress testing themes present a poor development.
There is a great practical case on EWMA, but it can not be compared to GARCH model, because there is not a practical case on GARCH. There is no useful application. This model is only mentioned and explained theoretically. On the other hand Montecarlo Simulation presents a certain confusion. It's unclear and imprecise.
Finally, at the end of the book an address and e-mail are written in order to make contact with the author, but such an e-mail doesn't exist. It was impossible for me to contact Cormac Butler by means of that e-mail. Besides, there is a website in order to send your questions and queries named answerback.org. It was not possible for me to access this website.
Well, the book is good for a reader used to calculate VaR, not for beginners, because of printing errors and calculation mistakes. You must to identify them before to continue the next lesson and theme. Well, my rating to this book is 3 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Accurate and helpful.......2007-09-12
This book has been right on the money when it comes to interpreting my dreams, and I love the detail and history of dreams for different cultures, since so much of what we dream is drawn from icons of our subconscious.
covers all topics.......2007-05-07
i have some other dream dictionaries and this one covers just about every conceivable topic or symbol that i have seen missing in others.
bedside dictionary.......2007-04-10
I use this Dictionary all the time. It is well organized and contains most of the common symbols in dreams. It is the perfect size to slip conveniently into a nightstand drawer.
Love this book.......2006-10-20
I have used this book for at least three years and have found none better. Not only does it offer deffinitions, but also little facts and things that have to do with dreamming.
The Best So Far!.......2006-08-17
I have purchased 10-12 dream dictionaries over the years, and this one is the best that I have encountered; I own it in both hard back and paper back. It is very comprehensive, and helps you piece together your dreams yourself, giving you the tools of dream symbology and interpretation. I disagree with the post that 'trashes' this book, perhaps the reviewer didn't get a good night's sleep? ;-) No dream book is going to tell you point blank exactly what your specific dream meant of course, but rather educate you about the symbology therein, enabling you to connect with the language of dreams. I have learned SO MUCH about myself in my dreams that I would not have otherwise learned, I now call the dream state 'Night School'. I recommend adding this thick book to your arsenal of interpretation tools!

Book Description
Consumers shop to satisfy emotional needs and desires-if a company is selling to emotion, then it's in the business of luxury.
What motivates consumers to buy? Is it pleasure? Education? Entertainment? Status? Or just an impulse? Knowing why consumers buy what they do is the secret to predicting how they will behave in the ever-changing marketplace. In most cases, much of what people buy are items they really don't need.
Focusing on the ""whys"" of spending, Danziger has meticulously profiled customers in more than 30 categories of discretionary spending through research based on surveys, interviews, and focus groups from a variety of people who make discretionary purchases. She provides readers with a vision of the future, giving them the foresight to anticipate the needs and desires of their customers.
This groundbreaking guide will help marketers of all products understand the underlying motivators consumers use to both make their purchases and become satisfied, loyal customers. In Why People Buy Things They Don't Need, Danziger examines:
* The 14 justifiers that give consumers ""permission"" to buy.
* Trends impacting why people purchase what they do.
* How to sell even more to these customers.
* The future of discretionary spending.
Customer Reviews:
Not the kind of book I was looking for.......2006-10-10
I thought this was a book to help consumers realize why they buy things they don't need, and thereby stop doing it. But it's the opposite -- it's aimed at helping businesses tap into our buying impulses and sell us MORE stuff! If you're a business looking to raise your sales, you might like this, but it was not at all what I wanted.
Kind of goes on and on.......2006-09-07
The comments by others about how the book at time rehashes statistics are true. At times I found myself glossing over pages just because it was number after number. I lost interest.
I also got to the point with the author's repeated fixation on 9/11 that I had to put the book down. Enough is enough. That fixation only revealed to me the fact that the author's insight and point of view is very limited to the current and is United States centric. The author doesn't address a broader global view of wants and have a historical perspective of why people want to help other spot future trends.
Understand how marketers manipulate you!.......2006-01-24
This book is written for marketers.
If you're a consumer, don't fail to read it - especially if you shop too much and save too little!
Delves into the reasons consumers want things and can be manipulated into believing they need them.
- Eric Tyson
Author of Personal Finance for Dummies and Mind Over Money: Your Path to Wealth and Happiness
An interesting study of the modern consumer.......2005-10-04
Its an interesting study.
I found that much of the people is a rehash of statistical studies in words. You may as well just look at the mathematical figures rather then read the words.
The other issue is the book was written not long after 911 and its long terms effects were over estimated by the writer.
i wish I read this when it first came out!.......2005-08-06
Because I sell luxury home and gift items, I was drawn to the title of this book. Sometimes that is not always a good indicator of what is inside, but in this case it was dead-on. The book helped me understand what I've seen over the last few years, as well as gave me some insight into where things are heading (and why). I keep talking about the book, and the list of friends and associates who want to borrow the book keeps growing, although I may not want to give it up. Only a few more pages to go....

Book Description
This groundbreaking text brings together experts in the field of visual art markets to answer some fundamental questions: Is art a good investment? Why is the art market dominated by America and Western Europe? Where are the key emerging markets and what are the next good buys in art? Providing readers with an understanding of the challenges facing art market "makers" (dealers, auctioneers, collectors and artists) and the decision making process experienced by market "players" and investors, this exciting text merges the key theories with examples of practice in a highly accessible style. Written by an international array of experts from the US, the UK and China, this book is essential reading for all those studying or interested in art markets and management.
Customer Reviews:
insightful and interesting.......2007-01-13
This book is a gem. Even for the people who don't know much about the art market, it's still a book worthwhile reading. The writing is very polished, yet easy to follow; the information is in depth. There are a lot of books on Art History; but this is the book on Art Market History with the most comprehensive analysis of economic, political and social impacts on art, artists and art market. The humor and sarcasm in the book make the reading fun. If you enjoy philosophy, politics and history or art critics, this is a great book to have.
A good introduction of the arts market.......2006-09-17
Iain Robertson et al. is presenting this very sound introduction to the non-expert of the arts international market. It is a collection of articles from different authors; therefore expect a non-linear writing style, which is however easy to understand. It is written from the point of view of the curator, or of someone who stands outside the market as an observer. What one could find as missing, are other perspectives such as the artist themselves. Nevertheless, this book discusses a very wide range of the arts market and even includes chapters such as art crime. The reader can thus easily gain a very good (though theoretical) insight of how the arts market works and of who are the actors in the market.
Five stars are awarded for this book, as I would recommend this book to all those who have an interest in learning how the arts market works and as this book delivers.

Book Description
Interest rate swaps--used globally by both corporate finance departments and investment firms to control interest payments, manage debt, and enhance investment portfolios--constitute a growing 1.9 trillion market. Now, financial personnel, swap traders, corporate treasurers, and professional cash managers can turn to this clear, authoritative guide to master all the methodologies used in the international swap market. Written for anyone whose work is touched by swap market activity, the guide uses diagramming techniques to first explain what swaps are, and how and why they are traded. It then addresses more sophisticated financial transactions, such as rate setting, analysis of swap desks, market-to-market, speculating, and financial statements. Readers will find detailed coverage of more than two dozen derivative products, including spreadlocks, swaptions, caps, and flows, and learn how swap trading works in foreign currencies and interest rates. Critical light is also shed on questions regulators are currently raising about the security and future of the swaps markets.
Customer Reviews:
Me thinks some reviewers protest too much.......2004-07-11
This book has been damned for being too simplistic, therefore consign it to the trash cart, or so we are expected to do. But given the relative novelty of these financial products simplicity in the best sense of word could be seen as a virtue in any work dealing with this topic. So, why the evident annoyance from some. Could it be that this work dissolves some of the mystery involved, and threatens some closed shop in these markets ?
Outdated and Shallow.......1999-09-02
The book easily shows its age in its focus on standards and issues which have long ago fallen by the wayside in this dynamic market. Far worse is that the book is preciously short on quantitative and analytic methods, and long on third-grade-teacher types of admonishments. I read the whole book becasue I paid for it, there are better, more up-to-date volumes out there. Could possibly be re-named "Swaps for English Majors", although, English majors as a group might correctly be upset at this association.
