Book Description
The CPA exam is changing. You need to change as well...to a book that better prepares you for the CPA exam and for business. This is the only book of its kind that demonstrates how to prepare financial reports and then how to analyze what those numbers really mean.
Every manager has incentives to present his or her firm in the most favorable light to lenders, equity investors and others. And, every manager wants to use the flexibility allowed by GAAP to manage the firm's earnings to achieve certain goals. Revsine, Collins, and Johnson
explain these incentives and help readers spot cases of earnings management, which disguises a firm's true performance.
For anyone preparing to take the CPA exam, and for anyone who wants or needs a working knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, and financial statement analysis.

Almost everything I dislike in a textbook.......2006-05-08
This book has many characteristics that I really dislike to see in a textbook.
First, the authors flooded almost every page with extraneous information. When you're learning this stuff, you want it to be explained simply and clearly - but the authors seem more intent on showing you how much they know about some topic, even when that information is tangenital and not very helpful.
They don't word things clearly. They'll call the same thing by two different names - (i.e. "Pension Cost" and "Pension Expense") which needlessly adds to the confusion. They'll discuss some topic for several pages without even writing down the basic, relevant journal entry.
One of the wordiest, most poorly written accounting books I have ever had the displeasure of studying from.
One of the better books available.......2003-09-30
This publication provides a thorough and comprehensive review of almost every important aspect of accounting, financial analytics and reporting. A useful tool for a person new to finance or someone needing a refresh or review of important topics. A solutions manual would have been helpful, but the book is a valuable buy nonetheless.
Very good for understanding the subject.......2002-03-10
The book provides very clear explanations about different aspects of financial statement analysis. The only drawbacks are that the book is a little simplistic and that problem solutions are sorely needed. However, I am sure you are not going to use oit for self-study- you would be using it as a textbook in a financial statement analysis class. The professor, would be able to provide you with solutions (as in my case- thanks Dr. Church!) and will also help you out with some of the tougher stuff. Whatever, the book does an excellent job in explaining the basic stuff- much better than the Sondhi book.
agree with others - needs solutions manual - useless without.......2001-09-27
I agree with those that say this book would be more useful if it came with solutions. Right off in the first chapter, hypothetical situations are presented without any background information in the text. If you haven't had some experience in Accounting, you are going to be left scratching your head. The instructor in my class says that it causes you to think. Hard to think if you have never come close to experiencing anything that is being discussed. Some guidance would be helpful.
Useless without a Solutions Manual.......2001-03-23
I'm studying for the CPA. I bought the book because it's required for a course in school. But to actually learn for the CPA exam, I'll toss this one aside for one that provides a solutions manual. Authors who withold the manual for the instructors benefit miss a fundamental point about economics - who the customer is. It's the student that the book is written for and it is the student who pays for the course. Breffni University of Chicago
Book Description
Financial statements are the basis for a wide range of business analysis. Managers, securities analysts, bankers and consultants all use them to make business decisions. There is strong demand among business students for course materials that provide a framework for using financial statement data in a variety of business analysis and valuation contexts.
Customer Reviews:
Case study is worth reading..........2007-04-21
First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.
good case study.......2006-04-30
I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.
Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16
This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".
This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.
The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.
I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.
The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.
I rate it "Good - 4 stars"
Required Text.......2002-09-17
This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.
Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12
This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.

ACCOUNTING EXCELLENCE.......2007-06-27
We have purchased this for our own use and for the use of family members in the Accounting profession. If you are an accountant, this is a MUST.
Excellent .......2007-05-07
The shipment was timely. The book was in excellent condition. The price was right on time.
Great tool for Staying Current and Developing Staff.......2007-04-01
I have used this series for over ten years and find that it is easy to use and also helpful in developing my staff. It provides them a guideline through the complexities of financial accounting and also a good tool for understanding the Convergence of US GAAP and International Accounting Standards.
Thorough Coverage, Great Price.......2007-03-18
I had been purchasing the Miller GAAP Guide series, but got disgusted when they divided the subjects into 3 or 4 volumes and charged more for each volume than what they used to charge for the single comprehensive book. I decided to give Wiley a try to see if it would meet my needs for about $300 less. So far, it has given a good accounting of itself (pun intended), answering questions on leases, cash flow statements, and auditor reports. Before shelling out the big bucks for Miller or the Prentice Hall books, give Wiley a try. Amazon has the best price that I could find for it, substantially less than the publisher's web site.
Review for the book.......2007-01-12
Such book is the one that I am looking for a long time. In China, I can't find the place to buy such book, and I am very satisfied the service of Amazon. Thanks!

Good book to learn the fundamental principles of accounting........1997-08-23
This book helped me get a good start in my Accounting college courses. It lays out the fundamental principles of Accounting simply and clearly. Its emphasis on the process leading to, creation of, and analysis of financial statements, would be very helpful to anyone who may need to understand just what a company's financial statements really mean
Book Description
Your one indispensable guide to IFRS compliance
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), originally known as International Accounting Standards (IAS), have existed since the mid-1970s but have only received significant attention from standard-setters, preparers, and users of financial statements in recent years. The IASB's restructuring in 2001 introduced due process procedures which conveyed added credibility upon the standards it promulgated, while other events, such as the epidemic of financial reporting frauds in the late 1990s and early 2000s helped foster the perception that the diversity of national financial reporting standards needed to be addressed and resolved, to ease the burden of investors and facilitate the international flow of capital. Seminal events included the qualified acceptance of IFRS by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), and the mandate for all European Union-chartered publicly-held companies to report consolidated financial statements under IFRS beginning in 2005. As other major nations either formally adopt IFRS (e.g., China) or heavily incorporate them into nominally national GAAP (e.g., Australia), and as several major private sector standard setters (in the US and UK, most notably) have committed to "converge" to IFRS, the importance of IFRS to the future of financial reporting is assured.
Wiley IFRS 2007 is the comprehensive source for guidance in applying IFRS to complex, real-world fact situations, and is equally valuable for preparers, auditors, and users of financial reports. To facilitate the reader's understanding, both examples created to explain particular IFRS requirements, and selections from actual published financial statements, are copiously provided throughout the book, illustrating all key concepts. Also included in this edition are a revised, comprehensive disclosure checklist; an updated, detailed comparison between US GAAP and IFRS, keyed to chapter topics; and discussions of major ongoing IASB projects which may have significant impact on readers' responsibilities over the coming year, including IASB's controversial attempt to define IFRS for smaller companies.
The revised 2007 edition addresses important and complex requirements such as those pertaining to the accounting for:
* Financial instruments
* Loss contingencies
* Business combinations
* Employee benefits
* Foreign currency-based transactions
The 2007 edition continues detailed coverage of all previously issued IAS and IFRS standards and SIC and IFRIC interpretations, including the complex but important financial instruments guidance of IAS 32, IAS 39, and IFRS 7. New examples have been added to every chapter. Other complex areas of financial reporting receiving expansive coverage include:
* Leases
* Revenue recognition
* Employee benefits
* Consolidated financial reporting
* Impairment of assets
* Agriculture
* Insurance
* Extraction of minerals

Customer Reviews:
Confused.......2007-04-10
I purchased the series to assist in preparation for the upcoming CIA examinations and must admit the books are very confusing. Ideas are presented in a very disjointed manner and I am unable to determine the main trend or ideas shared after having read a couple of pages.
There is also information overload as the ideas do not flow naturally from one to the other, and it takes along time to complete one chapter.
The content is good but the explainations are not very clear as to how they all fit together.
Wiley CIA Exam Review.......2007-03-16
This is an excellent series for assisting in obtaining my CIA. The number of self exam questions really helps in preparing and understanding the concepts. This is a better product then the GLEIM books

Customer Reviews:
Terrible terrible terrible!.......2007-03-13
This book is terrible! This is not a good review for anybody who hasn't had any previous accounting experience. The text is not written in user-friendly wording. I had somebody who is an accountant look at this book and although they understood it, they said it wasn't written very well at all! I had to buy this for an Masters level "Introduction" to financial and managerial accounting class and I know that a lot of people in the class dropped the class because they were having such a hard time with the text. If you have accounting experience, you will probably not think this book is bad, but if you're like me and haven't, then you'll be in trouble. As a degreed engineer, I've had my fair share of experience reading non-friendly texts. This one is definitely up there as far as the "BOOK FROM HELL" category.
Not difficult but detailed........2006-04-08
This is a very advanced begining accounting text used by Harvard University in its accounting courses. It combines both Financial and Management Accounting and it is extremely detailed. Their are no solutions in the tests for their very difficult problems and I have not found a study guide to accompany it thus far. Do not buy it if you are not familiar with accounting. This is a textbook.
Good High Level Overview.......2005-09-06
I would recommend this text for higher level accounting/financial analysis courses. There are many other books out there to dive into the exact nature of making journal entries etc. so don't think of this as an excellent beginner to intermediate stlye text.
The cases are excellent for those who will be making upper level decisions not the actual day to day transactions.

Questions concerning book.......2004-05-27
Do the case studies have questions and answers for students to look at?
Excellent Presentation of an Array of Stinking Cases.......1999-10-23
I can't say anything more about this book. The author's presentation skills and overall arrangements are marvelous. It's not only informative to read it, but extremely fun! Though my firm specializes in securities, internal control, and compliance areas, I still regularly raise those issues highlighted in this book to my colleagues over email or during conference. We all benefit from it a lot.
Book Description
The CIA exam tests a candidate's knowledge of current internal auditing practices and understanding of internal audit issues, risks, and remedies. The exam is offered in four parts, each part consisting of 125 multiple-choice questions. The IIA recently updated the CIA exam content, effective with the May 2004 exam. There are four modules on this CD reflecting the four-part exam. Each module contains hundreds of practice questions. The CD can be used as both a study guide (accessing 4000+ questions) or in exam mode.
Customer Reviews:
Full of problems........2007-05-09
First of all, the fonts and the text are too small for spending the necessary time on the program. I had to set the resolution on my computer to its lowest settings to make it feasible for long periods of study. Second, you can take the 4,000 questions and knock off 1,000 of them because of questions that are repeated in different sections. Third, I really don't think that anybody checked to see if the spelling was correct (improper hyphenations such as "unre-alizable"). Fourth, there are several instances of two answers being listed more than once, with one listed as correct and the other incorrect (e.g. V2C2-0074). Fifth, the questions may be the same as in the Gleim textbook, slightly altered but with different answers. Sixth, there are few of the questions with mathematical computations, atleast to the point where I a have used this program. Seventh, I don't think the author understands the difference between "may" and "should". (In one question, it states as an incorrect response that procedures in small companies may be fully documented, and while they don't have to be, relevant to the size of the company, it is incorrect to say that it is wrong for a company to do so.) Eighth, the "Thorough Explanations for Answers" often left me completely confused as to what the justification for the answer was, resulting in me having to go back to a text to see what he was trying to say. Ninth, no printed user guide, the "Help" section is very little help, and the technical support hyperlink is a dead link.
Positives: Some of the questions are different from the Gleim textbook. (Henri Fayol's 14 principles of management, Sarbanes-Oxley 301 whistleblower program implementation); many questions - good practice.
Good sutdy materials, but too complicated software to use........2007-01-13
The content itself is as good as the books. However, this software program does not allow me to understand how to use intuitively. It seems very complicated. That is why I am rating this software program as 4 stars. All I want to do is; test, pick up the questions that I did not answer correctly, re-test only these questions, pick up the questions that I still did not answer correctly, then, print out these question on papaers so that I could carry with me to memorize. It has been more than 2 hours since I installed the program, and I still do not know how to do what I have just mentinoned above. I am not patient enough to read all the help files. I believe that many people, like me, do not want to spend a lot of time reading intensively the help fles, when being hurry to start studying.
Now, this is my second review to tell you all what happened since I wrote the first paragraph. I decided to read all the help files and it took me one entire evening (3 hours ! )to understand exactly how the program works. It was worth though. Since I did not want to get lost in the sea of 4,000 questions. So, if you are thinking of purchasing this product, hurry up and allocate enought time to read help files. Or...., it maybe only me.
