1 out of 5 stars Vague, Poor Learning Tool.......2006-12-05

As an senior undergraduate in entrepreneurship and finance, I expected this text to really explore the basic concepts of entrepreneurial finance, however, it has only led to many frustrating hours of reading and re-reading sections, only to return to class as confused as when I left two days prior. Definitions are unclear, if provided at all. The cases are often excessive and complicated, and overshadow the true learning outcomes of the case study. The text makes far too many assumptions, so if you are looking for an introduction to entrepreneurial finance, which this book claims to be, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurial Finance.......2006-11-04

It had good information, but some of the concepts weren't thoroughly explained. The terminology used isn't consistent with accounting terminology, so it makes it difficult to keep things straight (considering both finance and accounting cover a lot of the same ground for similar reasons). It's definitely more appropriate for more advanced levels of finance, but not so much for a finance introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Silicon Valley Finance primer.......2006-09-04

If you are involved in a high-tech startup or you want to run the financial side of such an operation then this easy-to-read textbook makes that job much easier. It is not a regular finance textbook which is designed for firms in which intellectual property is not the prime ingredient. It is for people who need to deal with venture capitalists or screen high-tech startups for financing.

The participants on both sides of high-tech finance, those who start companies and those who would like to fund them need to know how financial projections and valuations should be done and how they should be evaluated. For those who would like to learn how Silicon Valley's real main industry of starting companies happens this is an extremely valuable book to have.

This text still needs to have a bibliography to point readers to some of the specialized texts needed to deal with writing the business plan, intellectual property law and general legal issues. A lot of very usefull ideas are held by people who don't know how to start companies to bring those ideas to market.

1 out of 5 stars Book not very helpful.......2003-10-08

I'm amazed that this book is for MBA level students! I am currently an undergraduate student and have the opportunity to use this textbook for a finance class and find this book very vague on termology and not very helpful when it comes to difficult concepts. Anyone with basic knowledge of business can understand the book so that's why it amazes me that this book is used for MBA's!

5 out of 5 stars Financial Street Smarts.......2004-05-07

Professor Stancill, an icon at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business, shows a unique approach to entrepreneurial / mid-market finance. If you are looking for a traditional discussion of financial concepts get one of the the many fine textbooks on the market. But if you are are ready to "get down and dirty", especially if you intend to acquire a small business in an LBO scenario, apply the lessons learned from this book. Stancill applies street-smarts to structuring a deal, and he offers a hands-on, step-by-step approach that is easy to follow even by non-financial types.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-11-01

I was lucky enough to be able to have Jim Stancill as one of my MBA professors at USC -- this book is a great book if you want to learn how to REALLY start a company. Specially for academics and non-business people, this is NOT your corporate finance book. This is how small companies start up and how to run a small company and even how to buy a company.

1 out of 5 stars Cram101 Outline Not Helpful.......2007-09-09

While the Smith & Smith Entrepreneurial Finance textbook is well written, the Cram101 Textbook Outline of the textbook is unlikely to help a student learn the material. The book consists simply of left-side pages that have terms and definitions, and right-side pages which are filled with blank lines for the student to take notes in class. The definitions are not categorized except by chapter. No formulas , lists, diagrams, or any other kind of information is included. The book comes with a discount on the additional price for the publisher's online practice tests, but I chose not to pay even more money when this product was so poor.

I was extremely disappointed with this book. I would expect a textbook outline to be in outline form (i.e. information grouped by category and the different levels of importance), as well as to include all significant formulas and diagrams. I would strongly recommend against buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars For the finance pro perhaps, but not the startup entrepreneur.......2006-11-30

This might be a great advanced finance textbook in the academic world, but it definitely is NOT a good book for the person doing a technology startup who needs to know how to build the case for financing the new company. The word 'entrepreneurial' is in the title, but the audience is the MBA or graduate student. This needs to be noted so that starting entrepreneurs don't go out and buy this book hoping that it will help them build the financial section of their business plan. My sense is that it won't.

5 out of 5 stars Book.......2005-04-18

Well, I agree case studies are always good. However, numbers are also good, -they allow a company to be looked at in a different way, to determine the veracity of what the people may be saying about their company's profitability, etc...Bonjour Colinne! Ca va? tienclee@aol.com

2 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment.......2003-07-12

The first edition of this text has a tendency to get too theoretical with betas and CAPM as they apply to private companies, make too many distinctions between individual and personal required rates of return without a discussion of any empirical data to back up the opinions, not explain the implications of the SML theory to private investments that well, not fully explain the theory and computations behind the models they use or why they use escalating discount rates in the models. To try to understand the models, you have to go to the web site and dissect the Excel spreadsheet. I have the impression the authors bring no practical experience to the text, only the attempt to force complicated corporate financial theory into the realm of privately held business.

As a business appraiser, I found most of the quantitative theoretical information useless and its application to privately held businesses tenuous, at best. Alternative theories and approaches were not really discussed. The concepts of expected value and simulation have some real good application possibilities, but not much time was spent on how to do it in a way usable for small entities with limited budgets and a staff with basically no statistical background. I feel that the authors' agenda was to impress the readers with what they know (or think they know), without regard to conveying their ideas in an easily understood, supportable and workable format. I found chapters 8-11 to be especially frustrating. To top it all off, there are also errors in the answers to the end of chapter questions.

On the positive side, the book was well organized and there were references to studies, papers and other texts that make further reading and investigation into the topics easier.

4 out of 5 stars Good textbook structure - mediocre quality of online section.......2001-07-09

The book has a good structure and has good chances to become a standard textbook in MBA classes or for industry newcomers. However, to make it a real classic it badly needs a second edition. First, there are too few (good) case examples. Second, the online tools are far from complete (something like this should never be published!). Third, the exercises need revising and are partly inconsistent or reptitive. (Comments based on online tools and materials as of June '01)

    Book Description

Targeting readers who wish to learn more about the financial aspects of entrepreneurship, this book provides financial statements for every type of business, not just corporations; and includes balance sheets that show a negative equity position, as many businesses do get into financial difficulty or declare bankruptcy. Updated to include the latest tax laws and current interest rates, Entrepreneurial Finance includes an extensive chapter on personal finance and covers every type of retirement program available to the small-business owner. Written in the first person that speaks directly to the small business owner, this book provides practical problems, reflects current Federal Reserve policy, and gives specific uses for each of the six formulas presented regarding the time value of money. It outlines the basic economic factors affecting finance, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of business ownership, and discusses working capital and inventory management. For business owners and managers of sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies, or small nonpublic corporations.

5 out of 5 stars Keep this one on your desk!.......2003-05-22

I use this text in a course I teach and I think it is a great basic primer. In explains in simple language the subjects that entrepreneurs must have a working knowledge of and many don't. If you are just out of undergrad business school, this may be too simple - but most entrepreneurs are 30+ and have been out of school for a while. This is a great, pragmatic tool for this group.

3 out of 5 stars Ok... but I expected more...........2002-06-04

    Pros:
Definitions and concepts are introduced one at a time most of the time. Glossary is provided. Answers in even number problems are provided. Review and Discussion Questions are provided with no answers, but they can be easily checked in the corresponding chapters. Included in Appendix D is a case study on a donut shop of small business finance.

    Cons:
Useless Excel spreadsheets that come with CD. The authors include Excel tables used in each chapters. Many times figures are HARD TYPED, not derived from formulas. Some people may want to use the spreadsheets for their own needs, but this practice diminishes the point of using a spreadsheet. Some concepts are not clearly or completely explained such as future value of an ordinary annuity, and EOQ (basically formulas in chap 8). The derivations of formulas are not provided, which let the reader merely memorize and simply plug in values in the formula without understanding the context to use and the assumptions. "Entrepreneurial" contents are scarce considering the intent of the book, which barely distinguishes itself from other typical corporate finance books. I would like to see more real life case studies such as the one in Appendix D, so that material learned throughout chapters can be demonstrated in the context and in a coherent manner. Interdependences and relations of concepts should be explicitly iterated and be shown with visual aids.

    Prerequisite:
Basic algebra at junior high school level, including power, logarithm and summation. No prior knowledge of finance is assumed.

    Comment:
I would look elsewhere for a basic finance book with more of application and implementation tastes. This may -not be fair to the authors' intention, but hands-on modeling with spreadsheet is a better and more sophisticated approach to me. I recommend to read any introductory finance book that explains concepts and their interdependence very well, then move on to a spreadsheet modeling book for implementation such as Financial Modeling by Benninga, Practical Management Science by Winston and Albright, Excel 2000 Formulas by Walkenbach, and Financial Models Using Simulation and Optimization by Winston.

      Book Description

The first book on the market to approach this topic from a comprehensive perspective, Entrepreneurial Financial Management offers an applied, realistic view of finance for today's entrepreneurs. This book emphasizes that entrepreneurial finance is not just about raising money and creating financial statements: it explains that management is the key to success for any new business venture. It provides an integrated set of concepts and applications that draw from entrepreneurship, finance, and accounting, and will prepare users for the world they will face as they start their new businesses. Proper attention is paid to venture capital and public offerings, but these are put in their proper perspective, as less than 1 percent of new ventures should even consider these financing vehicles. Based on practical experience and informed by theory, this book will prove useful for accountants, finance professionals, and entrepreneurs.

5 out of 5 stars A fine tour of the role of finance for the entrepreneur.......2004-05-03

This book has many virtues. First, it knows its audience. While generalities are subject to all kinds of exceptions, entrepreneurs tend to be active people. This book is written concisely, but covers a comprehensive list of subject. However, it is essential to understand that it doesn't cover any of the subjects exhaustively. It is more like a tour of finance for entrepreneurs. Few people who have what it takes to start businesses will handle all of the financial subjects covered in this book without help and advice from professionals (nor should they), but every businessperson should have an understanding of every subject in this book at least to the level discussed in this very fine book.

The treatment of forecasting, sources of funding, and valuation (including cash flow analysis) are vital topics that too many entrepreneurs treat too cursorily. The discussion in this book is certainly not sufficient to make you an expert on any of these subjects, but sill certainly assist you in becoming sufficiently conversant to speak knowledgably with professionals or prepare you for deeper study. The discussion of accounting is a very quick introduction to the subject and will definitely require deeper study unless you are going to completely outsource your accounting.

I think this is a terrific textbook that could be used as part of a one term course on the subject and hope that it gets adopted at many universities, colleges, and I could even see it used in specialized high school settings for the right kind of bright and driven students.

The material in the book isn't particularly hard, but it is broad. While it can be read alone (especially if you have some familiarity with the subject), it will definitely benefit most students to have the guiding hand of a skilled instructor, class discussions, and applied projects.

I think this is a fine and successful book that will benefit many.

      Book Description

This book focuses on classic capital raising. That is, it covers the debt vs. equity decision, the options available to smaller businesses, and the considerations that lead to rapid growth, including venture capital, IPOs, angels, incubators, and so forth. Raising Entreprenuerial Capital begins where entrepreneurship books leave off, assuming that the reader understands simple financial statements, has selected a specific business, and knows how to write a business plan. It provides a broad, high-level summary of the subjects that people typically research, such as "How should your company position itself to attract private equity investment?" and "What steps can you take to improve your company's marketability?" Unlike other books of the genre, Raising Entrepreneurial Capital includes several chapters on worldwide regional variations on forms and availability of pre-seed capital, incubators, and the business plans they create, with case-studies from Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific-Rim.

      * Combines solid theory with practitioner's experience and insights
      * Case studies illustrate theory throughout the book
      * Describes worldwide and regional variations in capital raising strategies

It begins with a discussion of the various legal forms of entities, goes on to cover debt and equity financing techniques, introduces helpful approaches to valuation (not found in too many other books targeted to the early-stage entrepreneur), and then discusses exit strategies. There are also several helpful case studies, a sample term sheet, etc. I'd recommend this book as a great introduction to the subject of small business finance, and as a helpful guide to anyone seeking to raise money (with a competent business attorney by your side) from angel or venture capital sources.

        Book Description

        * What have been the major trends in entrepreneurial behaviour and regulation in European health care?
        * To what degree do approaches to regulation and entrepreneurialism differ amongst subsectors and countries across Europe?
        * What does the evidence show about successes and failures, and which successful options are open to policy-makers?

A wide range of entrepreneurial initiatives have been introduced within European health care systems during the last decade. While these initiatives promised more efficient management, they also triggered concerns about reduced equity and quality in service provision.

This book explores emerging regulatory strategies that seek to capture the benefits of entrepreneurial innovation without sacrificing the core policy objectives of a socially responsible health care system. It opens with an extended essay on current trends and evidence across health care subsectors and across countries, presenting a wide range of alternatives for policy makers, and assessing their relative advantages and disadvantages. It then reviews entrepreneurialism and regulation in specific contexts (such as hospitals, primary health care, social services) and considers related issues including the impact of corruption and the potential lessons from deregulation of public utilities.

Regulating Entrepreneurial Behaviour in European Health Care Systems brings together the perspectives of politics, economics, management, medicine, public health and law and will be a valuable resource for students, academics, practitioners and policy makers concerned with health policy and health reform.
