3 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed.......2001-10-20

This book was useful and somewhat helpful in providing additional information on reformatting my resume. However I probably would have chosen another book had I been able to compare. This book is 199 pages of which well less than half is actually narrated tips on creating a resume. The remainder of the book consists of resume and cover letter examples. In actuality this book should be considered a book of examples rather then instructional. In, addition, the examples are repetitive and often provide the same information over and over. Really in the approximately 75 pages of examples there are only about a dozen unique items to learn from. There are also pages dedicated to listing institutional references which seem to serve almost as a page filler.
The book does do a good job of diversifying its audience to a wide level of financial professionals however; in general, it seems somehow inadequate.

4 out of 5 stars Accountants: Do You Have The Best Resume?.......2000-03-26

When looking through books of resumes, I often find that I have a hard time adapting them to myself. This is usually because the resumes don't apply to accounting/finance. For that reason alone I would recommend this book. There are resume examples for the entry-level employee as well as the veteran. There are even some examples of resumes for people interested in changing careers (for example, going from private accounting to a hospital administrator).

Also helpful, are tips on interviewing and the cover and thank you letters. The book also lists names and phone numbers of various corporations and professional associations.

All in all, I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a job in accounting/finance-no matter what your experience level.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? AND HE HAS A MBA ?!!!.......2006-06-03

My goodness, where do I begin...TYPOS, GRAMMATICAL ERRORS AND A TON OF NONSENSE about life on "the Street". I spent 5 years on Wall Street in various areas of the industry at 2 of the top 5 firms and another one of the top 10 firms. I bought the book because I thought it might give me a basic overview of other areas I might be able to move into and plan a stategy to do. Geez, I was awestruck at the amount of poor writing and overinflated depictions of life in I-Banking. Spare me! I was shocked that the authors made it out of high school much less college and prestigious business program. (I should apply to the school and tell them you can't tell me "no" because you said "yes" to this guy, and look how he writes and openly acknowledges he's an alumni member.) Spend your money elsewhere. Find folks in the business. You will fare much better. This should get negative stars for a poor attempt at a marketing/advertising book attempting to be substantive.

1 out of 5 stars LOTS of grammatical errors, sparse useful info.......2006-02-25

Let me just say that there are waaay better books out there on the subject, even if you just want to get a brief rundown. And you needn't even be a grammar nut like myself to feel antsy about when the next spelling or syntax error is going to show up, because there's an average of one per page. Honestly, I couldn't get through half the book, but I'm pretty sure there was nothing in the latter pages to make up for it.

4 out of 5 stars A simple book that gives you basic understanding of investment banking.......2005-08-30

This is a book written in very simple language, explaining the basics of investment banking. I liked the book because it is not very big, and everything is explained in very simple terms. Probably not the best choice for those who are looking to gain in-depth knowledge. Found a few typos here and there.

2 out of 5 stars Just a big advertisement really..........2004-03-20

This is the second Vault guide that I have read, and the second disappointment that I have had with this series. I really isn't a career guide at all, just a very short back ground on what IB is. You can find a description of IB on the internet for free. The only redeeming value is the "day in a life of", but even then, there are only a dozen pages or so. In all, you can find most of what is in the book for free on the internet. I won't be buying any more vault products, as they have little information, and more pages of ads for other vault products than pages of usefull information.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Complete Garbage.......2007-09-26

This book is loaded with extraneous stuff but has very little on actually marketing a tax business. In fact he talks about almost anything but that.
It could be written as how to start a business and I would give it a 3
but as far as tax businesses go you are going to get zero as fsr as creative marketing ideas. The book is dated as well. Needs an update...Dont waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Good practical book.......2007-08-23

As a tax accountant, when I read this book I found it interesting and practical. The author stays true to the title and allows readers to get a feel for what it is like to be a tax consultant as well as what the outlook is for the field. He does not get bogged down in tax talk in this book, it is what you want if you are looking for an overview and some steps to take now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I ever bought! Very informative........2007-07-31

I bought my copy in 2003. This is a very good book for anybody starting out in tax consulting or small CPA environment, and even for some experienced practitioners too! The first time I read the book, I was pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information. Everytime I read the book again, I am amazed at how succinct the author was. The section on performing tax research alone, to me was worth more than the price I paid for the book. This book delivered what it promised and more.

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting and informative book.......2005-11-08

The book is loaded with information for a person aspiring to become a tax consultant or a tax preparer. The author touches a lot of different aspects of the tax profession. It has helped me to decide to become a tax professional.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read, informative and entertaining.......2003-12-20

This is a very well written book that examines the topic of tax consulting from several interesting angles. Interviews with accomplished practitioners give the reader valuable insights into this profession. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the field of taxation.
