Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Should health care be a right?.......2007-08-22

Beware: This is an highly ideological text that starts with the assumption that health care is a right! It than goes on to say that in order to fulfill that right it is necessary to control the costs of health care. Obviously, cost control is a very problematic economic proposition that calls for state intervention and that sometimes has consequences that are the opposite of what is desired.
In the UK, where health care is a right, cost control has led to shortages, waiting lists and an overall degradation of health care. The UK, currently, has the highest mortality rates for oncological problems of all the EU countries and British people got used to flying to France and India for medical care. Canadians also have shortages and Canadians resort to the US.
Sometimes a "right" can easily turn into a "wrong"!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2007-07-15

I got this book for a graduate class that I am taking. This book uses clear language when presenting the material and has many mini "case studies" for examples, which makes it easy to read. Though I am required to read this book, it is not the standard, wall-of-text, that I am use to reading.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding overview of healthcare system in USA.......2007-07-05

This is probably the best single text I have read on healthcare policy issues in the USA. The books addresses every relevant aspect of our system. Unlike other excellent books, such as Dr. Arnold Relman's book, A Second Opinion, which analyzes the system, then makes recommendations on how to reform it, the authors here mainly explicate. The format of the book includes brief, usually fictitious, vignettes about physicians, patients or administrators that illustrate the points the authors present. That format - combined with the simply-presented, clear narrative and analysis - works very well. I also find the references to be excellent. Aside from Dr. Relman's book, I recommend any of the books by Prof. Victor Fuchs, in particular Who Shall Live?, books by Prof. Theodore Marmor and the classic by Prof. Paul Starr, The Social Transformation of American Medicine. There are many other excellent books and articles by a wide range of insightful analysts. These kinds of books are invaluable for understanding the issues in healthcare. So much of the information that filters through to the average person via news reports, propaganda issued by parties with vested interests to protect and superficial proposals from polticians is inaccurate and misleading, usually grossly so. Reading a book such as this goes a very long way towards cutting through that clutter regardless of one's personal experiences and prejudices.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Health Policy.......2007-01-09

This book is a great basic review of how health care is delivered. The format and information is most useful for people who are going into medicine. There isn't really anything about the politics behind health care policy; instead the book focuses on defining key terms and outlining the structure of relationships between payers, receivers, and providers. The book also covers the differences between different types of insurance policies, as well as different national health plans of countries with more socialized medicine.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good book.......2006-11-10

We use this book in the Health Care Policy class for which I am a teaching assistant. It is a good, basic introduction to most of the important issues in health policy and the students give it high marks for clarity and comprehensiveness. It is easy to read and to understand.

Its a book that really guides you trough the steps of the design process.

5 out of 5 stars " What's Wrong With Traditional Reward System ? ".......1999-09-19

As asserted by Belcher "traditional approaches to compensation do not meet today's business needs and are failing American industry. As the recognition of failure grows, U.S. companies are rapidly adopting alternative reward systems in an attempt to deal with the challenges of an increasingly competitive marketplace."

What's wrong with this traditional reward system?

According to Belcher :

* tradional reward systems compensate, but do not reward.

* traditional reward systems do not reinforce teamwork.

* traditional reward systems do not support strategic business priorities.

* traditional reward systems are inflexible and are not reflective of business results.

Then, variable/alternative pay system vs. traditional pay/reward system.

Variable pay system is defined by Belcher as an alternative compensation system that ties pay to business outcomes and supports a participative management process. Cash payouts are based on a predetermined measure or measures of group or organizational performance.

This study is highly recommended for HR professionals and line managers.

Product Description

This compelling and innovative book is a must read for business professionals who are tired of the counterproductive environment fostered by the conventional wage and salary system. The current pay structure is guilty of undermining organizational success in countless companies. It has led to organizations with unmotivated and uninterested employees, poor strategic alignment, and ineffective management styles. In his thought-provoking book, Dr. Abernathy identifies the roots of this problem and offers a solution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pay for performance explained.......2003-10-14

I first read this book for a graduate psychology class and have since referenced it in several papers and given several copies to business people I know. Basically, it solves the problem of how to align people's personal agendas (pay), with organizational agendas (profit). It also makes the manager more efficient because they no longer have to supervise employees as closely. It is important to note that the system described in this book is better than typical commission or piece-rate systems. Switching to this system will increase the profits of any company bold enough to fully implement the switch. Even if you are not a fan of pay-for-performance, the first seven chapters provide an excellent insight into why people rarely perform to their full potencial in modern organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of pay in a U.S cultural context........1999-06-02

This book verbalized some of the problems that I, too, (as a compensation manager) had observed within employee populations at companies in which I worked. It was particularly effective at describing the pay for time culture that is rampant among U.S. workers. The easy to read text was divided into short chapters that described not only the problem but also provided a solution through a balanced scorecard approach. One of the best books on pay that I have ever read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Solid & Easy To Read.......2005-02-07

I thought this's a very "typical" academic text book with lots of complex and head-spinning algorithms pointing you to nowhere. And, I was wrong.

Truly, I'm impressed. This book not only fills with rich contents on electronic payments and case studies, but also it's well written in a simple, easy-to-read style. For people like me who wants to know more about payment technologies in electronic commerce, you will find this book very helpful. In general, this book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the fundamental knowledge on security infrastructure, like basic security, cryptography, digital signatures, authentication, PKI, as well as smart cards, biometrics usage in electronic commerce. The second part gets you to the heart of various e-payment systems, like digital cash, digital checks, SET, credit card payment, and micropayments, etc. For each e-payment systems, the book depicts the protocols to help readers to understand the overall process. It addresses the pros and cons. It shows some case studies in real life application scenarios such as Octopus Card in Hong Kong, Visa Cash, and PayPal, etc. For advanced readers, lots of leads can also be found from the reference page for further readings. Overall, this is no doubt an excellent book on electronic payment technologies. Very solid!

Book Description

As magnetic stripe cards are being replaced by chip cards that offer consumers and businesses greater protection against fraud, a new standard for this technology is being introduced by Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV). This cutting-edge, new book provides you with a comprehensive overview of the EMV chip solution and explains how this technology provides a chip migration path, where interoperability plays a central role in the business model.

The book offers you a better understanding of the security problems associated with magnetic stripe cards, and presents the business case for chip migration. Moreover, it explains the implementation of multi-application selection mechanisms in EMV chip cards and terminals, and shows you how to design a multi-application EMV chip card layout. This first-of-its-kind resource also discusses the organizational and management issues in connection with the EMV chip migration and the use of EMV chip cards in e-commerce and m-commerce transactions. An excellent reference for today's IT/e-commerce professionals and post-graduate student alike, the book helps you fully understand this emerging, complex payment card technology.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not for Me........2006-02-28

This book is written for technical people. The overall tone is dull and pedantic. The contents will be difficult to follow for those who do not have mathematical or programming background.

Anyone who has an overall understanding of the EMV specifications will have very little use for the material in this book. There is nothing of note with respect to specific card schemes.

Business people can get much of the non-technical information in the book for free from other sources.

3 out of 5 stars From Patient to Payment.......2001-11-03

I am almost through the book and have found it helpful. However, the main reason I bought this book in particular was because it came with a practice disk. Guess what? The disk doesn't work. I emailed Glencoe and they told me to call Medisoft, and they told me to call Glencoe. If you're not taking a class, do not buy this book.
