2 out of 5 stars Impressionable, but..........2007-08-25

If you are looking for clear cut set of rules/strategy that you, the individual investor, can follow to make money, then look elsewhere. The trend followers solely follow the movement of the price in exclusion to everything else. They identify a trend - uptrend or downtrend - and play upon it. As noted in the book, they react to and not predict the prices.

The methods, far and few, explained in the book are definitely not suitable for me - the retail investor. First of all, I don't have access to a trading system that can follow the rules outlined. Second, I am not a trader in the strict sense myself, where trades are triggered by a system without me realizing what is happening. To perfect such a system would take me ages given that investing isn't my main bread winner. This book will pass off as a great text book in the annals of the Ivy League schools, but when it comes to making money for you, the individual investor again, I think you are better off reading the likes of Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darwas and William O' Neal. Read the Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time' by John Boik or any of William O'Neals books. They define clear cut rules that we can all follow and make money. How else would I have made about 80K in the past three years compared to the first 8 years of my investing where I barely made any.

There are a lot of anecdotes in the book - literally, every page has 2-3 of these. All of these may impress, but in the end they are nice to feel scholarly about. If you are a beginning investor, the first chapter -Trend following, all of 22 pages - lays the foundation by explaining the different schools of thought regarding investing. Then there is 55 pages outlining the great trend followers are their performance but never in clear and precise terms or rules what their methods are. It almost feels sycophantic reading about other 'great' beings the way it is written. At last, after reading almost 210 pages, I got to see some system of trading. All these are pretty dry.

This is possibly the only one exception to the many great investing books in my library that I could have borrowed from the library. You will be better off reading 'How to make money in stocks..' by William O' Neal again and again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not very useful.......2007-06-03

I own this book, I even recommend this book. But let me explain the 2 star rating....

While the book is a good history lesson, and shows how some of these guys make a lot of money, it's just not practical advice for the rest of us. I highly doubt that many of us have a billion dollar hedge fund to run.

Also, there are no real strategies in this book.

However, it did get me thinking in a different way. So for that, it is worth the money. (The main thing was to allow for larger swings against your position, allow the market a little more room than I did before.)

I know that this guy sells other products on his website, but to be honest, I don't see them being worth it. Most of this book is about defending trend traders, which is fine, but I wasn't attacking them in the first place.

I have begun to use the 4 hour chart more with his thinking, and I have to say it makes a little more sense. Not to get caught up in "micro-movements" as I call them. But to allow massive 300 pips swings against you on a weekly chart isn't practical for most of us.

So in conclusion, I think it's a good read, but if you get what I got out of it from my review, then it may or may not be worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars It describes trend followers but does not give any sysytems.......2007-06-01

If you want to read about trend followers you can get this book. But if you want books with trend following systems do not waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the author's podcasts before you dismiss him based on negative reviews........2007-05-25

I discovered Michael Covel in a web search for "trading podcasts" and find his audio diatribes refreshing, inspiring, offering a real perspective on trading discipline.

A link to the podcast directory is at the turtletrader dot com web site, they are just a few minutes in length and worth your time.

At least listen to the one titled "Understand your emotions", it is worth your time and an important reminder to anyone running any amount of money.

Sometimes the author uses his audio forum to respond to negative reviews of his book, if you are listening for the first time, skip the rebuttal and sample another of his podcasts.

2 out of 5 stars Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets, New Expanded Edition, (Paperback).......2007-05-12

Disappointing. Long on theory and very short on practical advice. Not of much use to an individual investor. I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a "how to" book.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2002-12-25

This book is almost as good as Natenberg, and much better than McMillan, Schaffers, and Fontanills. Although it is about options on futures, most of the strategies discussed are applicable to stock options as well.

5 out of 5 stars Filled with Insight, Creative, Not For Newbies.......2002-06-16

A good choice for stock option investors despite it mentioning commmodities. This book will overwhelm a beginner, who should start with Charles Caes' great "Tools of the Bear" (which works for bull and bear markets). Far superior to George Fontanills. Caplan is creative, he writes well and gives the studious reader many important tips. I made two pages of notes from this book. With even a little experience, an options investor will truly ascend to a higher level of knowledge and trading mastery with this book.

5 out of 5 stars The New Option Advantage.......2000-12-28

I don't receive his newsletter, I haven't been to any of his seminars and I don't trade with his brokerage. That being said, this book is outstanding in teaching non-complicated option strategies to traders who want to receive an "Edge" in trading. I have been trading futures for 7 years now, and have recently implemented options into my toolbag of strategies. So far, I've made at least 20 times what I paid for this book. You do though, must understand the futures market first. Trying to read this book, before understanding futures in general, will leave you in a daze. In contrast, there are many books who over-do option strategies by trying to explain how they came up with different strategies by using complex mathematical solutions and explaining how these solutions can make you money. If you think your confused reading this book, wait till you read one of those kinds of books! Good Luck everyone

4 out of 5 stars for futures options traders only.......2000-02-25

This book is very useful for those who are interested in trading futures and futures options. It really gives you the best strategies to use to capitalize in any market environment. If you do not have a very clear understanding of how to trade which options and at what time, this book will definately help.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for option strtegist.......1999-09-30

This book is good for the readers who has a good knowing in option basic. Deep investigations in different futures markets make this book very attractive for serios option trader. But mr. Caplan does not show his methods on 100%. It is not good, because the new traders can lose money if they will follow the Dave's methods as closely as they can.

Become a savvy investor in the options market

The New Options Market, Fourth Edition

Referred to as the bible of options books, The New Options Market has groomed two generations of traders and investors for success. Now with this updated and expanded Fourth Edition, Max Ansbacher gives his unique and tested strategies to you! With the help of numerous real-world illustrations, appendices with over thirty Web site suggestions for options traders, and specific advice on option picks, he explains the basics of trading theory and practice. In easy-to-understand, nonmathematical language, The New Options Market, Fourth Edition, is a highly personal, and newly updated guide that is specifically aimed at options traders in need of knowledge that will lead them to success.

"Aimed squarely at the ordinary investor, The New Options Market provides a practical guide to the use and misuse of options as an investment tool. Max Ansbacher's book is an excellent starting point for investors seeking a clear, nontheoretical introduction to options." -Jack Schwager, Author of Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards

"As a broker on the S & P options floor for the past eight years, I find that The New Options Market, unlike other option books, represents a clear, practical approach to trading options. Both the professional and the novice will benefit from the comprehensive coverage of all aspects of option trading." -Kevin M. Maclean, V.P., Fimat, U.S.A.

"Max Ansbacher is a true professional-one of today's most experienced option brokers and traders. His expertise stands out in this new edition of his book as it has in the previous editions. The fact that Max is a maestro at writing options is evident in the quality of the chapters on option selling."-Lawrence G. McMillan, President of McMillan Analysis Corp. and author of McMillan on Options

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Finally--solid strategies for success!.......2002-09-09

If you are serious about trading options, BUY and study this book! Ansbacher explains the concepts needed to understand options in clear and nontechnical terms. Often he is brutally honest in ways the force you to think. The most valuable parts of the book are the strategies that he provides for each type of trade to inform you of what action to be prepared to take if (and when!) the market turns against you. Ansbacher repeatedly tells you that it is not easy to make money with options, but the thesis of the book is that if you approach options trading with some of the strategies he shares, you will be able to keep the premiums you collect and not get an ulcer. His ideas about trading two-strike prices out and about how to easily figure the margin requirements on options are well worth the price of the book. The purpose of this book is not to tell you how to find good stocks for writing options; the book's purpose is to provide you with sound strategies to be successful once you identify stocks in which you are interested. If you want to identify the good stocks, spend a few dollars and sign up for a program like VectorVest. Then you will have both the process and the content for success...

3 out of 5 stars Good book to bring you down to earth.......2002-02-06

I found this book very useful in bringing people back to reality as to the speculative nature of option trading. It even includes very good advice as to how to avoid (or mitigate if you will) losses. I only gave 3 stars to this book as it does not provide strategies as to how to pick correct stocks, and as they say, winning in options is 90% stock selection and 10% option trading.

It is a good purchase for anyone starting in this business. Wish you all luck.

4 out of 5 stars A Clear, Concise Overview with an *Opinion*.......2001-08-06

The strengths of this book are the clarity with which it has been written, the numerous practical examples provided, and most importantly, the opinions which the author, an experienced options trader, freely provides. Ansbacher has avoided dealing with the complexities of options such as the Black-Scholes pricing model, the greek sensitivities, etc., instead focussing on the basics: common strategies and analyzing what to do when things don't work as planned (in contrast to Fontanills' whose examples always make money!), but it is his experience which really shines. Reading this book is straightforward, owing to its conversational tone and is really like having an experienced options trader at your disposal -- Ansbacher is no flake, he's traded SPX options for years and runs a successful hedge fund....This one belongs on the bookshelf with McMillan and Natenberg...

      1 out of 5 stars Very shallow.......2001-05-15

Ansbacher opens by stating that "basically the strategies [for using options] are as true today as they were 25 years ago". So much for the title "The NEW Options Market". As far as rating it a "bible of options books" from "one of today's most experienced option brokers and traders" is concerned, I'd hate to see an average book on the subject.

If you want to TRADE options then forget this book. The author has the firm belief that an option should be held till expiry. He therefore fails to sufficiently discuss the effects of dynamic variables on option price and leaves the reader with as good as no tips or strategies for TRADING options.

Technical traders will find this book insulting. The author assumes for the purposes of developing his strategies that in the end we all gain no more than the market average. It may be a contentious point but enough people believe in the merits of technical analysis and would have expected its consideration in a "bible of options", with a discussion and strategies for trading options in the short term.

In the book's synopsis (above), Jack Schwager rightly points out that the book is "aimed squarely at the ordinary investor". The lavish appraisals of Messrs Maclean and McMillan only do a disservice to their own reputations.

For the more conservative `investor' this book may be sufficient as a basic starter. Short term `traders' will be left with little more than could have been gleaned from basic info on web sites. For me the book left important questions unanswered. Spare yourself the frustration - spend a little more money and get a more comprehensive book!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book about futures options that anyone can use!.......2000-11-14

Mr. Ansbacher has done what seemed impossible: he has written a book about the complex world of commodity options- and more specifically S&P 500 index options- that doesn't require a Ph.D. to understand. And to boot, the ideas in the book actually work.

I am a professional commodity broker, and like many of you I've bought books about the complex world of futures trading, only to get home and find that a background in computational physics was required to get any further than the introduction page. What Mr. Ansbacher has done is to demystify a subject that many people (even professionals) don't really understand, even though they've read books on the subject and pretend to know: option trading.

Mr. Ansbacher's approach isn't what one would call simplistic. To the contrary, his approach is very exacting, methodical, and concrete. It's just that he has avoided lapsing into language that most readers couldn't grasp. And his approach will make many people who speculate in commodity options think twice about what they are doing.

The complex world of commodities is one where the investing public is constantly pitted against the professional traders, with predictable results. Mr. Ansbacher attempts to show the average (losing) trader the folly of what it is he's doing, and provide a roadmap to success and greater understanding. Anyone who wonders why he is losing money trading options should close his account, buy this book, and "go back to school." Highly recommended.

Mr. Walker is clear and concise in his depiction of how the options markets work. He details various strategies and makes options investing understandable to those new to it.

In my 11 years as a futures investor, broker, and author, I have never seen someone with as much grasp of options investing as Mr.Walker and have the capability to explain it.

Yes, As a beginner I can confidently say I know what option is, it's uses and the risk involve. The Author did not only explain the principle but gave practicable example everyone can relate to. All in simple and plain English, you don't need to have been to a school of economy to know what an option is. With the help of this book, I can't look stupid when others uses terminologies relating to option. Keep up the good work Joseph.

5 out of 5 stars understandable explanation of why you care about options........1999-11-18

5 out of 5 stars Good introductory book with plenty of examples........1999-10-25

Good introductory book with plenty of examples. Good layout too. Many different options trading techniques are discussed, each with an indication of how risky it is. It even suggests leaving some of the more advanced techniques to the professionals, or more experienced traders - good advice.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the Pitchfork guided by Mikula.......2007-01-10

Mikula's book goes straight to the substance of Andrew's trendline methods and introduces the reader to it's applications. Besides that, it reviews other techniques developed by his team which expand the trader's hability to combine trading concepts.

      Very good

3 out of 5 stars Looks good in the book but not on a chart........2006-10-26

I really wanted to like this book and i really tried to apply the methods to my trading but, it is not very accurate at all you might hit 1 out of 20 trades (which is not a very good ratio too me atleast). And the pitchfork is in every charting package that you buy so, i guess the market just fades thease moves.

4 out of 5 stars Are you serious about trading?.......2006-06-15

if the answer is yes, then I recommend this book for you. its very well written and its the complete pitchfork guide as far as I know. technical analysis trader, at one time or another, relies one trendlines to make his/her forecasts. the book gives you some methods, but you should add what works in your own trading system/style. I suggest to combine trendlines with osillators(I prefer slow stochastic), moving average (macd is the greatest)and chart patterns (double tops/bottoms,head and shoulders ..etc)to avoid bad entries. I don't recommend that you ignore normal support/resistance trendlines. they do work if you know how to apply them ,trader needs time and patient to master trendlines.good trader keeps learning. good luck

      4 out of 5 stars Patrick Mikula.......2005-07-26

Easy read, very informative and seems to work best on FX. Nothing new about fork TA but it is a new twist with the parrellel fork trend lines and trigger points so easilly recouped cost of the book on my first trade so surely this is the best way to recommend it....this book makes you money !

      2 out of 5 stars option education.......2007-07-21

The book is old and the information not with the current trading practices. Please note all the information is correct and the techniques are there, as well as teaching the basics very well. I would look for a newer edition of the authors work if someone wanted the latest methods as the markets keep changing and evolving so medthods must as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Options Overview.......2005-05-15

I read this book when I began my self-education
into the financial markets back in the mid-'80s.
Now I can get a hardback copy, in 'like new' condition,
      for a steal!

It contains 200-300 practical examples on using
options for all sorts of investment situations and
      objectives.

If you're new to investing, it might take a while
to see the logic in some of the examples, but all
of the strategies are viable and 'make sense'.

It is an excellent resource on the use of options
for straight trading, hedging, spreads, straddles,
      producing income, and insurance, etc.

      IMHO "Sure-Thing Options Trading:..." should
      be on every investor's bookshelf.

      4 out of 5 stars Undiscovered gem.......2004-12-27

This book is a steal at the current used price. It is definitely worth putting on your shelf, and reading and re-reading it. I agree with the above reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Top of the Class.......2001-05-15

This book is intended (more or less) for a person beginning in options. Its no "walk in the woods" but considering the abstruseness of both the subject and the other books on the topic I have scanned, it's near the top of the class. I think, it may also be somewhat more understandable than the Option Industry Council's - Option's Toolbox CD. This whole area has been poorly explained to the beginner for the most part, which is why options are not much more widely used despite their potential for leverage and risk reduction.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the multiple options books I have read........1999-07-10

Of the ten + options books that I have read, this was my first, and it is the best. I still refer to it often. Most of the other books are either too technical or too simplistic. This engages the reader with practical examples and descriptions of the types of trades that the novice to intermediate investor will use most. I heartily recommend it.

      Book Description

The large number of already available textbooks on stochastic calculus with specific applications to finance requires a justification for another contribution to this subject. The justifcation is mainly pedagogical. These lecture notes start with an elementary approach to stochastic calculus due to Föllmer, who showed that one can develop Ito's calculus "pathwise" as an exercise in real analysis. The text opens to students interested in finance a quick (but by no means "dirty") road to the tools required for advanced finance in continuous time, including option pricing by martingale methods, term structure models in a HJM-framework and the Libor market model. The reader is supposed only to be familiar with elementary real analysis (e.g. Taylor's Theorem) and basic probability theory. The text is also useful for mathematicians interested in the methods of modern mathematical finance without prior knowledge of advanced stochastic analysis.

3 out of 5 stars simple but too superficial intro to stochastic calculus.......2006-11-16

This book is intended to present a new pedagogical approach to stochastic calculus and its applications in finance. Prof. Sondermann makes an easy to follow introduction to quadratic variation, Ito's formula etc. using only basic tools from real analysis. After he introduces the Ito calculus and Girsanov theorem, he presents some applications in finance, like the risk neutral valuation, the currency options and the HJM model.

The book has the advantage that it introduces the stochastic calculus without relying on very heavy background. However, by doing this, it loses most of the precision of statements, and makes the book more suitable for bed-time reading. The book has no index term(!!), which is quite surprising for a mathematical book these days. Exercise problems are presented only for the introductory chapter on real analysis, none though for the material dealing with stochastic calculus. I do not see the reason why Prof. Sondermann decided on having exercises on the preliminaries and none on the main material, stochastic calculus. The book has also its share of typos, so be careful.

On the nice features, I liked the careful discussion of the currency options paradox (Siegel-Paradox), and the change of numeraire.

I think that Prof. Sondermann succeeded in presenting stochastic calculus in an easy way, and now readers might feel more comfortable to start reading a more advanced book on stochastic calculus.

Largely exempt from regulation and shrouded in secrecy, "hedge funds" are one of the most controversial institutions in modern finance. Presenting a balanced view of the subject. De Brouwer explains their workings using case study material from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, from 1997 to 1998. He also considers the future of hedge funds, their role for institutional investors, as well as policy proposals to limit their destabilizing effects.

        Download Description

Hedge funds are among the most innovative and controversial of financial market institutions. Largely exempt from regulation and shrouded in secrecy, they are credited as having improved efficiency and add liquidity to financial markets, but also having severely destabilised markets following the the Asian Financial Crisis and the near collapse of Long-Term Capital Management. De Brouwer presents a nuanced and balanced account to what is becoming an increasingly politicised and hysterical discussion of the subject. Part I explains the workings of hedge funds. Part II focuses on the activities of macro hedge funds and proprietary trading desks in East Asia in 1997 and 1998, with case study material from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Part III of the book looks at the future of hedge funds, their role for institutional investors, and policy proposals to limit their destabilising effects.
