4 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office System Step by Step.......2007-03-23

This is a wonderful book for someone with little experience with any version of Microsoft Office. It is very basic. However, if you are already very comfortable with, say, Office 2003, you may want to consider buying a more advanced book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-09-27

This item is half the price in the collage bookstore. It arrived quickly, unlike our bookstore with a record of delivering tech books after classes start for the upper level courses.

5 out of 5 stars MS Office Project 2007.......2007-09-21

I bought this book because it was recommended for an online-college course that I am taking. I couldn't believe that the same book was much higher in price on several other websites and how affordable it was to get through Amazon. The book itself is excellent as it gives step-by-step directions on how to use the project. It is an excellent resource and very easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking detailed, but easy to understand directions regarding the product it is designed for.

3 out of 5 stars Not helpfull in the business enviroment.......2007-07-30

This book may have been usfull for running a home business but, not too usful for me.

5 out of 5 stars MS Project 2007 Step by Step Review.......2007-07-16

I thought I already gave this one a review, but if you did not receive it, I just wanted you to know that your expedient service was excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Full and Practical.......2007-05-17

Once I get a Step by Step series book, and its operating model is just what you need if you start from scratch or you're an advanced specialist looking for updates. Very precise and clear explanations and companion CD with samples files for practicing just rocks!, you have the entire scenario and just need to get creative to escalate your neverending questions to the sample scenario, which is just as clear to see as on the field.
2007 version is just what I spected from the book, covering every topic from basic use to advanced control and tracking and integration with Project Server. You can notice PMI orientation in product, and that's quite good worked on the book.
I missed some information regarding some intelligence moved from Office Project to PWA (Server), like enterprise fields and server settings (well I supposed I'll get new stuff from the next MOC for Project Server)

If you want to solve questions regarding the use of the product, or maybe you're trying to get quite the expertise for a terrific project management, this book will do the job

Book as described and in good condition; received it in a timely fashion. Would buy from again.

4 out of 5 stars An Extended Handbook to Microsoft Office........2005-05-03

EXPLORING MICROSOFT OFFICE 2003 VOLUME 1 is a textbook that is basically an extended handbook on Microsoft Office. The book has what I would consider six major sections: basics of Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the Internet and the world wide web, and some essential computing concepts. The sections dealing with Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint contain all kinds of helpful hands-on exercises. The Internet and essential computing concepts sections don't have quite as many exercises and contain a little more book rather than hands-on knowledge. To be completely honest, this book is rather boring to read and work through on one's own. However, when used in conjuncture with a class, it makes a great tool.

Book Description

This book is the definitive and most comprehensive guide to modeling derivatives in C++ today. Providing readers with not only the theory and math behind the models, as well as the fundamental concepts of financial engineering, but also actual robust object-oriented C++ code, this is a practical introduction to the most important derivative models used in practice today, including equity (standard and exotics including barrier, lookback, and Asian) and fixed income (bonds, caps, swaptions, swaps, credit) derivatives. The book provides complete C++ implementations for many of the most important derivatives and interest rate pricing models used on Wall Street including Hull-White, BDT, CIR, HJM, and LIBOR Market Model. London illustrates the practical and efficient implementations of these models in real-world situations and discusses the mathematical underpinnings and derivation of the models in a detailed yet accessible manner illustrated by many examples with numerical data as well as real market data. A companion CD contains quantitative libraries, tools, applications, and resources that will be of value to those doing quantitative programming and analysis in C++. Filled with practical advice and helpful tools, Modeling Derivatives in C++ will help readers succeed in understanding and implementing C++ when modeling all types of derivatives.

3 out of 5 stars Nice targeting, but some ptfalls.......2007-10-05

The subject of this book is very modern. Programming derivatives is the most hot issue nowadays. I think this book is one of the essentials for quant developers.

The problem is how much the author himself is accustomed at programming?

I found that the author used 'minus array index' many times in the contents. Does C++ supports minus array index like A[-10]? I don't think so. Perhaps I could be wrong, because I, myself, have forgot C++ programming language for several years, and IT world changes so fast.

But any programmers didn't confirm that C++ supports negative array index. Maybe JAVA does? I don't know. Anyway, the thing is that the source code in the book is not compilable without some deep experience. In those levels, I think Wilmott's code or (financial) recipes are more reliable and easy to handle.

Absolutely, this bookk is one of front runners. But don't expect too much.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-19

There are few financial books that fill the gap between
the raw theory and the practical implementation, this
is one of the best beside Clewlow & Strickland's "Implementing
Derivatives Models".

1 out of 5 stars horrible code.......2007-07-04

I wasted too much time with the horrible code the book, it is a shame I hadn't read the other reviews before that.
most of the code in the book does not compile.

1 out of 5 stars this book does not pay off.......2007-06-09

This book has to much code (also for developers!), almost nothing of a high level description of the code (UML? some picture? APIs?), and a quite short mathematical formulation and explanation. The combination is a book that tals about everything but does not help to undersatnd nothing.
I do not know if the problem comes from the many pages (that will imply a bigger price) or to the strategy. I would prefer a better understanding of the patterns involved in the the development...

1 out of 5 stars Not received the product.......2007-03-12

Book Description

Pro InfoPath 2007 is an excellent book for developers trying to learn the scope and range of application forms that can be built with Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007. InfoPath is now in its 2nd generation and it enables the creation of rich desktop and web forms using XML technologies and allows gathering of structured, business-critical information. Together with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Server 2007, InfoPath allows built-in integration with back-end processes, databases, and work flow, and provides developers with rich tools to build enterprise-wide forms solutions.

During the development and stabilization phase of InfoPath 2007, Philo worked closely with the product team to testfeatures, provide feedback on scenarios, and to build and apply solutions for the government and public sector. He haspoured all that experience in an engaging manner into this book--a great read for every developer trying to learnInfoPath.

— Kamaljit Bath, Principal Program Manager Lead, Microsoft Office InfoPath and Forms Services

InfoPath enables users to design forms and publish them for use by other users. It combines the ease of use of Access forms with the enterprise scalability of a network-based platform. Microsoft's goal with InfoPath is to get form design and maintenance out of the IT shop and onto the desktop, while maintaining the power of connecting to web services or a SQL Server. Since InfoPath is wholly XML-based, it is easy to introduce it into a heterogeneous enterprise environment -- via web services InfoPath can act as the interface for any back end system. InfoPath 2007, coupled with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, adds the ability to deploy InfoPath forms in a web browser with no client side application. SharePoint and Office 2007 have leveraged InfoPath in many other ways -- making InfoPath forms part of the workflow engine embedded in SharePoint, and using InfoPath forms to capture and maintain arbitrary metadata in Office documents.

Pro InfoPath 2007 was written so that developers can read it as an introduction to InfoPath 2007, as well as use it as a reference for common tasks. Targeted at developers, power users should also find a lot of value in this book to learn how to design and use forms in InfoPath.

This book will show form designers how to:

In addition, developers will learn how to:

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Pro InfoPath 2007" useful for technical and business people alike.......2007-09-09

There are all too many technical books that are heavy on theory and light on "how to", or start out in an introductory fashion and then suddenly venture into highly technical territory without including the necessary background information needed to understand the content.

In "Pro InfoPath 2007", Philo Janus neatly avoids these pitfalls. Since he's writing about a product with whom most readers may not be familiar, he first answers the vital question, "What IS InfoPath?" with a comprehensive introduction to the product. Then Janus carefully outlines the capabilities of InfoPath and walks the reader through the steps necessary to create InfoPath forms in all kinds of environments; how to meet business needs in a myriad of situations; and most importantly, includes possible issues and limitations that one might encounter when using InfoPath and provides the necessary workarounds.

My own company has InfoPath installed but despite an enterprise-wide need for exactly what InfoPath does, is resistant to its use because of a fundamental lack of understanding of the software and how to best deploy it. A read of this book would convince them that they have a good product sitting on the shelf that would meet their needs and interface neatly with Sharepoint and other applications already in use.

Thumbs up to Philo Janus for a job well done.

1 out of 5 stars Again a lot of sales hype.......2007-09-07

Microsoft writes a lot of sales hype about how terrific a product is but rarely explains what a product can and cant do. After days of asking I have yet to find out what Infopath exactly does and what it is capable of. We have documents in our office. It would be a blessing if people could go to our website fill out a form and then email the data to us so that we could then merge that data into a word document. Simply recieve an email in outlook after a client has input data on our website and then merge the data into word.

It looks as if Infopath might do that function but most people have never even heard of the product although it has existed since 2003.

After days on the internet I have yet to discover if this product can do that or exactly what product could do that. Infopath is not a popular product because of just that reason it is a mystery full of mis-information. Why is it we have to buy a book or buy a product to determine whether or not we need it??? I wish that the author (and Micro soft) would explain exactly what Infopath does and what we would be taught. I wont buy the product or read the book if you cant determine what I am about to learn, what it offers or why I need it.

5 out of 5 stars A Jump Start to Building InfoPath Solutions!.......2007-08-06

This tiny book, in comparison with other technical manuals, is a fantastic way to get up to speed with InfoPath in a very short time. I'd never had the opportunity to work with InfoPath before, until my company decided to implement MOSS 2007 with InfoPath Forms services. I bought this book and in a few short days we were churning out InfoPath business solutions.
This book is an easy weekend read and then you are ready to go!

5 out of 5 stars Really good book. A+++++++++++.......2007-07-30

This book is just great. Good coverage in around 300 pages. I totally dislike huge development books that just harp around. This book covers all the necessary topics with examples... A++++++++++++++++ for Philo Janus

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book........2007-04-27

If you are doign anything with InfoPath 2007 then get this book!!! This book is an easy and informative read. The author even tries to make it his goal that this can be a weekend read. Not like your typical mind numbing rehash of the tech manuals. Philo not only describes what InfoPath 2007 is but gives real example that you can take into work.

Praise for Detail Process Charting
"A must-read for any competitive organization, Detail Process Charting: Speaking the Language of Process provides a comprehensive, yet clear, explanation of how to utilize one of the most powerful tools available to improve work processes. [Graham] has successfully integrated the history, success stories, and wisdom of those in the field who have applied this time-tested tool."
-Jim Denyes, Training Manager
Naval Occupational Safety and Health, and Environmental Training Center
Author, Work Smarter, Not Harder
"This book will be a valuable resource for all those interested in work simplification and its implementation. Excellent answers to the 'who,' 'what,' 'when,' 'how,' and 'why' of work simplification are provided in an understandable and very useful level of detail. Graham has obviously 'been there, done that.' "
-John A. Roberts III, Adjunct Professor
School of Business Administration, University of Dayton
"The keys to this approach . . . are the involvement of the workers and the simplicity of the charting approach. Even those participants who have never seen a process chart can almost instantly see how the process works, their role in it, and how it can be improved. This level of involvement means continuous buy-in, which significantly improves the chances of success. The emphasis on the document as the key process element and the ability to diagram the document to flow easily, rapidly, and clearly set this approach apart from all the others."
-Fredric D. Heilbronner, Director of Systems Consulting, eForms
Digital Consulting & Software Services, Inc.
"Much has been written about charting and business systems analysis, but I have not seen anything as comprehensive and clear as Ben Graham's book. Writing in simple, easy-to-follow language with plentiful illustrations and practical examples, this book takes the reader through the full spectrum of the charting process from initial analysis to managing charting libraries. This book is a must-have for all process improvement analysts and managers wanting to improve their organizational efficiency."

5 out of 5 stars Process Improvement - simplified.......2005-10-15

Work Simplification made simpler, process improvement achieved - what more could you want? And Ben's book provides the details for getting started and soon accomplishing your goals. An easy read - with everything to gain at a low cost, basically no cost -just your time (which isn't asking much, it's a fast read). The logic is simple, illustrations outstanding, and excellent coverage of an important yet downplayed topic. Now that BPM is among us - do yourself a favor and get immersed in the Graham Methodology and toolset - better than shelling out 6 figures for another product that is going to double in cost by the time your're serious about implementation.

4 out of 5 stars Successful Flowcharting.......2005-10-07

The Graham family have been involved in work-flow and work-simplification for 3 generations. This book brings together the work of Ben, his father and his grandfather, in an easy to follow text that explains both their approach to flowcharting and why it has been so successful.

Other readers, like me, may be a little unsure about the notation suggested or indeed the level of detail prescribed by Ben. However, putting such reservations to one side, the book is of great value to anyone involved in flowcharting, process modelling and especially work-flow automation.

I particularly liked the sections covering the setting up of a process team, which nicely addressed the roles and responsibilities, and the one looking at the structure and phases of a project.

The final chapter in the book is given over to detailing the experiences of practitioners in applying the technique and of the value created within their organisations as a result. This chapter alone more than justifies both the cost of the book and the time it takes to read it. We can all learn and understand more from hearing from what people have actually done.

In summary, I am not sure how viable the Graham notation is for those who have not already invested in it, but none the less the book presents an excellent case for process modelling or flowcharting and can help anyone who might be looking to justify a business case, whatever notation they finally settle on. Finally the book is a must read for anyone looking to undertake a work-flow automation project, on these projects the ideas in this small book will pay for themselves many times over.

5 out of 5 stars Building Real Life Systems with C# and .NET.......2007-03-12

This book is designed for the intermediate level developer who wants to learn how to develop web services using Microsoft's C# in the .NET framework, and for those who want to pass the 70-320 examination. This is not a 'cram for the test' type book but instead gives you the information you need to do the job, and incidentally pass the test. It is not a complete book on C# or .NET or even the Visual Studio IDE software. It is on how to use these to build real life systems.

Tied in with this, of course is information on passing the test. There is information about the test itself, and practice examinations (one printed in the book, one on the CD included).

If you are just interested in passing the test, there is a shorter book in the Exam Cram2 series. It's written by the same author but is significantly smaller as it is test only oriented.

4 out of 5 stars Good Study Resource.......2007-03-08

This is the 3rd Amit Kalani book that I have purchased and used to prepare for Microsoft certification exams. Very easy to understand and follow. Good exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-03-07

I read through the book and passed the exam. It gets the job done and covers the material.

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference But Not Necessary for the Exam.......2007-01-19

I originally bought this book because I used another book by this author and publisher to pass the 70-315 exam. I only made it through the first half before stopping. I just found the material too dry and theoretical. Much of it consisted of memorizing classes and their properties and methods. I ordered the Transcenders with the study guide and finished my preparation with that instead and passed my exam. I have used this book as a reference for my daily work, and found it to be fairly good for that purpose. It's just not well suited for the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Material for 70-320 Exam.......2006-11-08

I recently took and passed the 70-320 exam using this material as my primary reference. I commend the authors for their coverage of the test areas. The book is very well written with lots of example code to step through. I've done several MS Certifications and this is among the best training material I have used. A couple areas I found the book light on were Soap Headers and Leasing and Sponsorship. These topics are well covered on MSDN. Be sure to understand everything in the Appendix sections especially ADO. This book should serve well for both training and reference.

Got the book in just of few days and in great condition. Only gotten through about a third of the book so far. Lots of information and very useful to increase my job skills. Just find it somewhat diffucult to relate to if you don't have the software to work with while reading. Reading at home and have the software at work.

1 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE ACCOMPANYING CD????.......2005-07-29

Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I give this 1 star, not for content but for delivery and restrictions. spearsjunk@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2005-03-26

I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to.

1 out of 5 stars e-books a nightmare, beware the pdf e-book format!.......2004-03-28

I recently bought this book in electronic format to save time with delivery and then also to give e-books a try. Afterall, they have benefits, like little storage requirements, portability, you can search them through, etc..

Well, it all turned out to be a nightmare experience :(

First of all there is Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management) which obviously limits you from opening the ebook PDF on any computer you like. Each time you want to read it on a different computer, say at work, you must go through a painstaking activation process. Excerpt from adobe store:

"Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks cannot be moved from machine to machine, as the security of the file is tied to the machine on which the ebook is downloaded."

Not only that this takes all your time and energy, frustrates and enfuriates you it also does not work it turned out. I got server timeouts, "excuse us, but the server will be up running shortly" notices, you name it. Beware, I'd not be writing this if I wasn't thoroughly frustrated with the service. It gets better, read on..

After I searched and searched to find answers regarding the secretive digital rights management I wrote to customer support asking them a few questions just to understand how often and where I will be able to read my ebook (which cost the same amount as the regular paperback) and if at all I will still be able to access my ebook after, let's say, 5 years when I have reactivated it on several computers?! NO answer. Great.

You will find that part of their service is to let you activate it on PocketPC so that you can read it both on your computer and on your handheld. I can't find the excerpt right now, but it clearly stated you can do this. Well... as it turned out, not really and neither did it say so anywhere readily accessible. Having myself spent about 1.5 hours trying to get it to work, reinstalling Adobe Reader on both the PC and the PocketPC, reactivating, etc.. I looked into forums and found a post by a man who said he had spent 2 days trying to get it to work and then right underneath his call for help a cold answer apparrently from adobe employee that PocketPC 2003 (available since beginning of 2003) does not work with it yet, and they are planning on implementing it in the future. Tough luck, I just bought a book and should be glad I can read it on my own PC after having activated it. I better read it fast, because who knows, if my windows crashes I might even need to buy it again!? :(

The essence of a book for me means that
* I can take it anywhere with me and read it
* store it in my library for literally 100+ years and still be able to "access" it and read it whenever I like
* even borrow it to my friends ocassionally or sell it to a book shop after I don't want it

None of these seem to apply to e-books, yet advantages for publishers are enormous considering there are NO printing expenditures involved and they cost normally the same amount as regular books.

Last I'd like to say that I hope the ebook business survives, it would be a pitty to use technology to help disseminate. I hope Adobe reads this and takes action, too. I have 8 years of experience in computer support so no excuses on my part, sorry.

Good day to all and thanks to amazon for their great service in every respect.

I have not even received the product yet. How am I to write a review!

5 out of 5 stars ONLY book detailed on the Excel C API.......2006-02-02

This is the ONLY book that is written exclusively for the Excel C API. It is well written but the reader needs to have basic C knowledge first. Development of XLLs in C++ is a topic not well documented in litertaure except for the MSDN website which has an archived section on the Excel 97 SDK. In any case, the CD code that comes with the book helps a lot. For a quick start to build your own programs you may use some interface classes and headers from the CD.

Several quants purchase a separate software XLL+ for developing the Excel XLLs, but even the software is a series of headers and cpp files made easy. And when it comes to more complicated development like dialog or menus, the book is a useful reference.

4 out of 5 stars learn to use the C/C++ API for Excel.......2006-01-30

In this book you get detailed examples of how to access and extend the functionality within Excel. It is clearly a hands on programmer's book. The languages in which you can do this are C and C++.

Microsoft has provided a rich API in these languages, with which you can get at many objects within the spreadsheet. Like a reference to the currently active cell. Or a list of all open Excel documents. Or finding the formula of a cell, returned as text. Or trapping various events, like a recalculation or a window selection or a keyboard action.

As the book's title suggests, many of the examples are taken from finance. Apropos, given that this is a spreadsheet we're looking at. But the methods given can be applied in any context that you need Excel for.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2005-06-09

It may be true that a lot, defintely not all, of the information can be found in various places on the internet, but the sources are all over the place, incomplete and often refer to older technologies. The book contains much more than just the bland facts from various sources. For a start, the fact that all of this information is in one reference is extremely valuable. (I bought hardcopy, which I much prefer for reference and reading). The book is full of practical help and notes so that you don't have to find out the hard way where the undocumented problems are. There are worked sections on name handling and multi-threading. There are well-presented discussions about memory management, data types and handling large data structures. I work in finance but still think that I would have found this book useful even if I was working in another industry where high-speed number crunching is important. I was able to write xll add-ins after a weekend when it would have taken perhaps months otherwise.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough .......2005-06-08

I bought this in e-book format (it costs twice as much for some reason) and I did not get any of the code that comes on the CD with the hardcover.
I had written a scathing review of this book after reading the first four chapters which is simply VC++ documentation. Chapters 5-9 are a little more helpful though parts of it are also available free. Yet, I don't believe there is enough new material in here.

5 out of 5 stars Access 2003 & Relational databases.......2006-12-30

If you don't understand anything at all about databases, this book speaks to you in PLAIN ENGLISH!! Every book I've ever picked up, has always been in computer speak. This one uses every day problems, situations, and examples to show you how to use it, when to use it, & where to use this software. I read a ton of computer books & this one so far, surpasses all the others when it comes to understanding relational databases . . . it's written in English!

Read it cover to cover. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter and for the first time, you'll understand databases and what all the fuss is about. It's the one I recommend to my students, family, and friends when they seem to have that large question mark looming over their heads.

This book removes the mystery from databases, especially Access, which can be rather daunting. And while removing that mystery from Access, it gives you a little insight to Filemaker Pro as a database & you can see how the two software programs differ from each other while still being databases.

Don't let this book pass you buy. If you see it, get it & read it because you'll finally understand what's been going on in your class!

Highly recommended for people who need to take a class in dB (databases) and don't know the first thing about it. This is YOUR book!!

After reading this book, you'll wish there was one just like it for Visual Basic and some of those other computer books!! ROTFLOL!! Buy it, you'll definitely like it!!
