    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars very thorough.......2007-09-25

Probably the best product available. I bought the book plus CD. The book is very detailed and covers most topics you would want to know about in case you pass on. I feel I have a good understanding of the process. Estate planning is somewhat complex and takes time. You must read the book before plugging in the software so you will understand the major decisions you must make.

This package will crank out straight forward, no nonsense wills and related paperwork that is valid and binding. You do not need a lawyer. However if you have anything complicated or involves many conditions, you better pay the lawyers fees.

    3 out of 5 stars It's OK but won't work on Mac.......2007-09-12

I have not used all the pieces of this and it has some limitations but it is a cheap way to get a will I guess. I am mostly annoyed that they don't make it for Mac which makes it a bigger hassle for me since I am a Mac user.

4 out of 5 stars Very good if your needs are basic.......2007-08-24

My wife and I bought this product before we went on an out of the country vacation and left our toddler with relatives. We wanted to have the peace of mind that our intentions were documented and known. Our situation is not complex so we found the program and documentation to be very accommodating.
I would guess that someone who had a great deal of acquired wealth and assests, or a complex family system may want to invest in an attorney's assistance.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use product........2007-08-23

WillMaker was simple to use, and didn't take much time at all. It is a great way to get your affairs in order. It's not easy to think about death, but I think it is important, so those who survive you don't have as many difficult issues around one's death.

This program also has some other useful legal programs such as childcare contracts.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Reading but Well Worth It.......2007-08-08

I didn't want to go to a lawyer and spend lots of $ on the very little money I have. The software comes with a very detailed book and explains everything very well. I did actually write my will that day and living will as well.I just have to get it signed by witnesses and notarized. I didn't give it a perfect 5 b/c there is no such thing as perfect. That's just my own opinion. Well worth the money and the software goes through the will process step by step.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This book should have come with the software.......2007-09-21

I have used Quicken many years but was still using the 1999 version until mid summer this year. I decided I wanted some features that the new one has, plus that older one doesn't seem to like Vista all that well, so I bought 2007 Premier. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised to find there was no written user manual supplied with it as that seems to be the way with most software anymore.

So, I came looking on Amazon.com to see what was available. This one looked & sounded good from the descriptions with it's listing. I ordered it along with another and even paid for two day delivery! The book is billed as being the official guide and it seems like a well written user manual that SHOULD have been supplied with the book. I am still working my way through it but have learned a lot. There is a good, usable index which is very valuable in a book like this. I would say it is a good purchase for anyone and especially one like me who is jumping a few generations of the software to get to the 2007 version.

1 out of 5 stars Macintosh Users Beware.......2007-03-24

I would have rated this book zero stars for Mac Users, but I was forced to choose a number ... so I chose 1 star. This book is totally directed toward Windows users. If you are a Mac User, check your CD for a Mac User Guide.

4 out of 5 stars A basic instruction book if you need a hard copy.......2007-03-08

Most of the stuff in this book is there in the Quicken help file, but I am a person who likes to thumb through a hard copy in the evening and not have to sit at my computer. My one hesitation about this book is it tells you everything about Quicken, but it does not help you solve the many, many quirky problems that arise with Quicken during setup, data conversion, downloads, investment accounts, etc. I had to go to the forums for that info. If you want a hard copy operating manual that is complete but short on problem solving, this is an excellent book. If you want a book that will help you unsnarl Quicken's many quirks, this is not for you.

    4 out of 5 stars JR.......2007-01-21

Typical of all "Offical Guides" this book is complete, however, without any lightness. It tells the nuts and bolts wthout the humor of a "... for Dummies" book. If you plan on doing any advanced work, other than just keeping your check book, then an "Offical Guide" may be necessary.

1 out of 5 stars Not so hot.......2006-12-25

A salesy, broadbrush book. Won't help you as much as you might hope. True, the very basic stuff is covered (so I give it 1 star instead of the hoped-for option, 0. When it comes to converting data files - like Mac to PC, neither this book nor the paid professionals at Intuit provide any help at all. In that sense, this book is a total waste.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-04-03

This book, like most all the Dummy books, was full of good, hidden information. It is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Way for the First Time User to Get Started.......2006-12-10

I got audited once by the IRS. When I went in I took four or five inches of paper, most of it generated on the computer by Quicken. Any question I was asked I simply pulled out the appropriate printout to show how I had gotten to the number I had put on the form. I can't say how much having all this documentation saved, but I suspect it was substantial.

Quicken is probably the most popular generalized accounting packaged in use by individuals and small businesses. Over the years it has gotten better and better. So have the books that describe Quicken. This book describes the new Quicken 2007. The author uses the Premier version, but most of what he discusses is applicable to any version, (Premier has more stuff on handling investments). In keeping with the Dummies Books Philosophy, it is written in a light and amusing manner while providing the information needed to get the most out of the software package.

Also, as a 'Dummies' book, this book really isn't intended for dummies, but for people with little or no experience with Quicken. As such, some of the fancier features are not treated with the depth you might want if you're already a Quicken user.

But if you're just getting started with Quicken you'd have to look a long ways to find a better place to start.

2 out of 5 stars Best for total beginners.......2006-10-01

This book is geared for people that are brand new to Quicken entirely, not just Quicken 2007. If you have EVER used Quicken at any point in your entire life, you will find this book too elementary. I was hoping to learn some hints and tricks that I didn't already know, and perhaps how to take advantage of the improvements that Quicken 2007 offers over Quicken 2005. I didn't find that in this book.

I was particularly disappointed in the way the author almost totally ignores the online capabilities of Quicken and its ability to help you track investments. He basically says you shouldn't be worrying about these things, so he's not going to talk about it.

But if you need help with such things as backing up a file and balancing your checkbook, you may find the book helpful.

    1 out of 5 stars Mutual Funds.......2006-09-19

although quicken will do quite a bit at allowing you to evaluate and review your mutual funds from several brokers at one time, mr nelson says you do not need to do this as you can get the info from the brokers directly. the quicken help screens are very frustrating. fiddle with the menus a while and you can get pretty good info on your funds.

    Book Description

The Exclusive Story behind Intuit's Hard-Won Success

It's a modern-day David and Goliath story for the business world: a company dreamed up at a kitchen table, built on explosive PC growth, and forced to battle a giant in the race to revolutionize an industry. This is the story of Intuit, creator of renowned software products like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax-the company that beat mighty Microsoft and changed the way 25 million people manage their finances.

Written by Intuit veteran Suzanne Taylor and seasoned business manager Kathy Schroeder-who were granted exclusive interviews with founder Scott Cook and other key figures- Inside Intuit tells this company's original and fascinating tale for the first time. The book vividly recounts each dramatic stage of Intuit's development: from initial conception to "bet the company" investments; from strokes of marketing genius to disastrous product launches; and from battles for survival to successive victories against arch-rival Microsoft-the company no one else could beat.

Evident throughout this account is the power of Intuit's relentless customer focus, which guided the company from tiny start-up to a 6,000-employee, $1.4 billion business. Instructive and inspiring, Inside Intuit chronicles an enduring company's extraordinary success against overwhelming odds.

"This important book doesn't take any shortcuts in analyzing the building blocks of success. Taylor and Schroeder have written a fascinating blow-by-blow account of the thousand and one decisions that have made Intuit what it is. Highly readable, thorough, and extremely well researched Inside Intuit is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand success in Silicon Valley."

-Emanuel Rosen, author, The Anatomy of Buzz

"Inside Intuit is more than the history of a start-up that grew to dominate a major software category. It is a blueprint of success for entrepreneurs and investors who want to build great businesses in difficult environments."

-Roger McNamee, cofounder, Silver Lake Partners and Integral Capital Partners

"Inside Intuit is a very entertaining book. Any entrepreneur at heart will enjoy and learn from the story of how Scott Cook and Tom Proulx faced so much adversity and came back from the brink of disaster to build a very successful, highly admired Silicon Valley company. Readers can learn many lessons from both Intuit's successes and mistakes. In the end, good ideas, hard work, determination, and strong values really do pay off!"

-Dan Rudolph, Senior Associate Dean/Chief Operating Officer, Stanford Graduate School of Business

"I was thrilled to read the inside story of how Intuit was born and raised. I've always admired Intuit's strict attention to customer needs and feedback. Now I have a much better idea of how that culture was created."

-Stewart Alsop, General Partner, New Enterprise Associates

"Inside Intuit offers readers the secrets behind that company's extraordinary success. The authors' insights into how Intuit trounced Microsoft alone are worth the price of the book!"

-Andrea Butter, coauthor, Piloting Palm: The Inside Story of Palm, Handspring and the Birth of the Billion Dollar Handheld Industry

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars good read.......2007-05-07

This book has a compelling start and middle but tails off towards the end. I will read it again soon though....I liked it.

    5 out of 5 stars A nice inside view.......2007-02-12

Being an Intuit supporter for 15 years as well as an alpha tester of Quickbooks for windows I admit with no hesitation I am biased when it comes to Intuit related things. This book exceeded my already high expectations as a great inside view of the start, sputtering and surge of Intuit. The Microsoft connections were very interesting to read as well. Being a business owner it showed how culture dedicated to providing excellence to the customer can pay off as well even though it looks like it might cost alot to perform. It was an easy read and I strongly recommend it....

1 out of 5 stars Not Quite the Whole Story.......2005-05-31

The book is written by insiders. They make the new CEO out to be quite a hero. Better ask some Intuit customers about that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Case History of a Continuing Business Model Innovator!.......2004-05-02

How many companies have survived direct battles with Microsoft? Not very many. How many lived to win over direct battles with Microsoft? Even fewer. Intuit is in that elite company. That experience alone would make the book worth considering.

The authors have done an outstanding job of building on that potentially fascinating subject matter by successfully capturing the key elements of how Intuit has continued to succeed as a business model innovator through four CEOs. I was especially pleased to see that the book captures the values that led to this innovation, the organizational and process methods used to stimulate and pursue the innovation, and the motivations of the key innovators.

In addition, the book moves down into the organization to capture the thoughts and emotions of many of the Intuit employees as it moved from its P&G style focus on customer needs to a broad-based expansion through acquisitions to a GE-style disciplined approach to achieve performance in key areas.

In fact, this book was so fine that I had to ask myself what was missing before I could spot any flaws. The only area where the book is a little light is in describing the details of how Intuit's software development changed over time, and what the lessons were. Now, don't mistake my point. There's plenty on that subject (especially when Intuit was a start-up), but there could have been more . . . if this book were to become a case history source on software engineering.

But no book can be everything to everyone, and currently there are few books that explain continuing business model innovation through generations of senior management. So Inside Intuit becomes a must read for those who want to master this critical leadership and management task.

By the way, Inside Intuit is a very apt title. The authors seem to have had unrestrained access to company insiders. The book comes away much richer as a result than any other Silicon Valley saga that I can remember reading. Most of those books focus on one to three people in the company, and leave it at that.

As I finished the book, I wondered what improvements in its continuing business model innovation Intuit will make next. I can hardly wait to find out!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-04-04

When Inside Intuit arrived in the mail, along with four other books I'd ordered, it was the first one I picked up to browse. Seven hours later, I finished the book! Reliving the experiences, placing myself in the events (I worked for Intuit for over fourteen years - by way of ChipSoft), was an overwhelming experience for me.

I remember the first time I met Scott Cook. Leo Redmond, at the time managing the Intuit Supplies Group, and I had just finished lunch in Palo Alto. As we drove back to his office, we talked about Quicken and how it was the second product I bought for my first computer in early 1989 (the first was Sim City). Leo said that he'd like me to tell Scott about it. Scott was excited - "You have five years of Quicken data?" He told me to install the latest Quicken beta as soon as I got home - he wanted to know how it handled large data files (mine was over two megabytes at the time). That was nearly ten years ago.

What an experience! Having been hired by Evy Chipman in late 1988 and working closely with every top-echelon executive on the ChipSoft side (Gaylord, Harris, Gleicher, Lane), I never thought I'd be so intimidated - stammering - as I chatted briefly with Scott in his office.

Reading Inside Intuit brings you into Scott's (and many others) office - you are in the presence of greatness when you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars New to Quicken.......2007-01-26

For someone who is new to quicken this book is a good starting point. The downside of the book is that it is probably a derivative of a long series of books. With each new edition the text becomes more verbose. Undoubtedly there are many features in Quicken. The base features should be explained and then the new features will fall into the scheme of things.

I bought Quicken to track my investments. I have entered several accounts several times to get the "error" free summaries I know to be true. I still do not know how to properly enter corporate bonds. When the newcomer gets involved, the details of the process are the burden of the user. Quicken has some help, but it is even more sparse for detail.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-06-18

Do you know how to set up Quicken to fit your needs? If you don't, then this book is for you! Author Bonnie Biafore, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical guide that explains Quicken 2006's basic features and answers questions you're likely to have, that can't be answered by the program.

Biafore, begins by explaining how to create a Quicken data file, create accounts and categories, configure preferences, and protect your financial information. Then, the author describes how to make deposits, pay for expenses, track the things you own and how much you owe, perform financial tasks online, reconcile your accounts, and care for your Quicken data file. Finally, she explains how to create and use budgets, track investments, and generate Quicken reports to prepare your tax returns or evaluate the state of your financial fitness.

In this most excellent book's pages, you'll find step-by-step instructions for using the most popular and useful Quicken features, including those you may not have quite understood, let alone mastered. More importantly, this book helps you evaluate Quicken's features and decide which ones would be most useful in your situation.

4 out of 5 stars Mac Users BEWARE!!.......2006-03-27

I was all excited about this book -- it sounded like just what I needed to learn Quicken. I started to read it and on page 10 I read: "This book covers the Windows version of Quicken. The program's development for Mac was completely separate-- and different--from the ground up. Accordingly, Quicken differs significantly on the two platforms." I was VERY disappointed. Nowhere in the Amazon description of this book does it mention that it is written for Windows users. Granted Mac users can probably get something out of it, but beware of what you are buying.

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Manual.......2006-02-08

Just as the cover says, "The Missing Manual," and "Exactly what you need to get started." Bonnie Biafore's book is a 'techie' manual that is informative and entertaining. It's even loaded with accounting and investing information that any average hard worker can understand.

Intuit missed the boat on this one...

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Guide For Quicken 2006 Users.......2005-12-30

For anyone out there that uses Quicken 2006 on a daily basis (and there are many happy users out there that do), one of the biggest complaints would probably be the lack of a manual to learn all the tips and tricks of how to get the most out of their application. Thanks to this outstanding book by Bonnie Biafore those pains will no longer be felt! Of all the great books in the Pogue Press series, this book is probably one of the most useful for the simple fact that it's territory that is not covered very well when you scan the books online regarding Quicken. Ms. Biafore explains the inner workings of this application like a seasoned pro. From inputting bills and deposits to tracking finances to creating reports, 'Quicken 2006 for Starters' is a great resource for all novice Quicken users out there!!

      5 out of 5 stars Quicke is quick..and easy.......2007-08-31

This book models each screen in quicken and labels every item in a clear and concise manner. I had used previous versions of Quicken which were quite different from Quicken 2oo7, and without the help of this book, it would be difficult to use the program.

It is an excellent reference and at a very reasonable price

2 out of 5 stars No real world examples - no information on bugs in the software.......2007-03-15

I've read about 80% of the book with the other 20% not having anything to do with what I need Quicken to do (investments). The book is filled with graphical pictures and the chapters are laid out nicely.....just like the help file.

The book is geared for beginners in COMPUTERS, not Quicken. I know how to use menus to execute commands. This book successfully shows beginners how to "click cashflows" or "search". However, I would think that most who would purchase Quicken would already know the basics.

Also, there is regrettably no information about how to link the tax forms to new items that you've created. Moreover, there is no information with respect to problems downloading transactions from your institution or credit card. Currently, I am "correctly" setup to download both from my bank and from my credit card.

My bank sometimes doesn't properly login automatically using auto-update, but does login automatically when I click the Update Now button manually (without providing any additional credentials). My credit card downloads are strange...they always download the transactions, but most of the transactions show up as either duplicates or triplicates. This wreaks havoc on the Cash Flows page and there is no information in this book to troubleshoot any of those problems whatsoever.

I've recently read most the help file and cannot find any glaring differences with what is in this book. The book provides nice pictures, but doesn't EXPLAIN anything...just says "to search, click search" etc.

I've rated it 2 stars because of it's lack of differentiation from the help file and because I blew $25 on a "help file with pictures". I am disappointed in this book.

      5 out of 5 stars QUICKEN 2007 ON DEMAND.......2007-03-09

This new version of Quicken is wonderful, and much faster. I would recommend it to anyone who keeps a budget!!!

5 out of 5 stars Novel Illustrated Approach to Learning.......2007-01-19

This book has an interesting and very helpful style or philosophy of how information about computer software should be given. The tag line on the back cover is 'For Those Who Would Rather Be Shown How Than Told How.'

Each page has two columns. The left hand column has the 'Told How.' Specifically a series of numbered steps to guide you through each step of the task. This column also has a few hints and tips, and many have a 'See Also' section to point you to some related area. The right hand column has screen images that show what the screen should look like as you complete the steps given in the left hand column.

I found this to be a very good way to get into the system. When I set it up I wanted to use it to pay bills and balance my checkbook. They have a section in the book - (#6 to be specific) - called Managing Your Bills. I went through the book until I got through this section and then quit. Some time later I decided to create a home inventory for the insurance company. That turned out to be a couple of sections later. What's next for me is the Tax part of the program.

5 out of 5 stars The Paper Plan-it.......2007-06-01

This book is awesome. It not only clearly defines how to implement Quickbook features, but touches on the basics of accounting as well.

I've never been impressed enough with a reference manual to write a review, but I had to for this one. It is perfect for me.

5 out of 5 stars A QuickWay to Learn QuickBooks.......2007-03-02

I am going to presume (I know that's not very smart, but I'm going to do it anyway) that you're already decided on Quickbooks software. So the reason you're reading this book review is to determine if you want to buy this book to learn what to do with it.

This book is pare of Que's 'On Demand' series of books. It's a visual quick reference guide that uses a task oriented philosophy to show/describe how to do things in Quickbooks. Specifically, say you want to Schedule a Recurring Transaction, that is, a bill that needs to be paid the tenth of every month for the same amount. You can look up: Recurring Transactions or Scheduled Transactions in the index or Scheduling Recurring Transactions in the Table of Contents. All of these lead you to page 189. Page 189 is printed with two columns. The left hand column has a set of instructions on how to do the task. The right hand column has pictures of what the screen should look like as you follow the instructions.

So you read through the whole book quickly, learning at least the basic idea of what you can do. Get Quickbooks installed (page 2), register it (page 5), and work you way through the first couple of chapters. Then skip around to get what you want done, as you decide to implement those features.

It's a pretty handy way to learn a software system.

1 out of 5 stars Great Source of Bad Jokes - Look Elsewhere For Useful Information.......2006-03-11

It is not exactly a closely guarded secret that Lawyers and Accountants have a rather bizarre sense of humor. Given the manner in which they make their livings I guess this is understandable, if not entirely forgivable.

All that said, I will warn you that if you purchase Quicken 2005 for Dummies in hopes of getting useful information all you will receive for your twenty-two dollars is a pitiful collection of bad jokes.

Don't believe me? Well just how funny are you going to find it when as a Mac owner you are faced with the most unenjoyable task of moving Quicken files from a Windows machine to your Mac and having turned to the relevant section of the book you read the following:

      "Did Somebody Say Macintosh?"

"....Keep in mind, however, that this process (converting Windows to Mac or vice versa) is not for the timid or faint-hearted. I would also say that it isn't for people who have better things to do with their time. My advice to you? Go to a movie. Mow your lawn. Read a trashy novel. Forget all about this importing business."

And, as Bugs Bunny would say "That's all Folks!" when it comes to advice on transferring Quicken for Windows files to a Mac.

That's correct, not a single useful word of advice about moving Quicken files between Windows and Mac machines exists in this entire book. I know because I wasted a great deal of time looking. And yes, I would vastly have preferred to use that time doing something useful like mowing my lawn.

And believe you me, Mr. Nelson is an equal opportunity kind of guy when it comes to discriminating against computer users in search of useful Quicken information. Not only does he virtually slam the door in the face of those of us who use Macs, he does his level best to ignore the needs of all other users as well.

Time after time after time I have found myself trying to find information pertaining to some confusing and poorly explained feature in Quicken only to find myself the butt of yet another of Mr. Nelson's lousy jokes.

Countless other times having spent nearly $25 for a manual on Quicken so that I can avoid wasting time wandering aimlessly through the poorly written and illogically organized Help Files that come with the program I find myself being referred to those very files by the author of this book. Excuse me, does he think that I spent $25 to gain access to critical information not provided by Quicken so that I could be told time after time to go to Quicken's help files for the critical information I need?

If all of this were not bad enough, I am afraid that as a book store clerk of 8 years experience I have long understood something about computer manuals that is blatantly apparent in this particular one.

To whit, software sales rest entirely upon constant change. Why buy a new version of a program unless it's different? One of the most unfortunate offshoots of this change or die mindset is that computer manuals have a shelf life of about 6 months. This is not happy news at all to the folks publishing these manuals as they are used to books with shelf lives measured in decades not minutes. One of the tricks that these publishers have come up with in an effort to make these manuals profitable is to issue "New and Revised" manuals each time the software changes in which the new and revised material is a bit on the scanty side if you get my drift.

Thus although the title says Quicken 2005 for Dummies even the dumbest of the dumb will soon realized that the author did not exactly knock himself out during the revision process. In short, all sorts of "old" information remains unchanged, and all sorts of "new" information didn't make it in.

I don't know about you, but I've got better things to do with my time than read books like this... like mowing the lawn or reading a trashy novel, for instance!

2 out of 5 stars Not for my Mac.......2006-02-24

It's an excellent book--unless you have a Mac. To my disappointment, I discovered very little useful info for "the rest of us." Tip to Mac users: before you purchase this book from Amazon, skim through a copy at your local bookstore and see if it's worth the price! Had I done that, I wouldn't have bought it. My fault.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner.......2006-01-10

Like Steve Nelson, I too am a CPA and MBA, with a JD thrown in for good measure. Unlike Steve, I don't make my living writing how-to books for software. I've been searching in vain for a book that takes a look under the hood of Quicken. As Steve points out, "[I]f you're an experienced Quicken user and want to 'take your personal accounting to the next level,' the book is probably a poor choice ... [I]f you're looking for encyclopedic coverage of all Quicken features, this is not the book for you." Regrettably, such books DON'T EXIST. If you have technical training in accounting, Quicken is a real stinkeroo because it is NOT a double-entry accounting system, but rather a sophisticated database application. It uses procedures and terminology foreign to accountants, masking much of its functionality with obscure, proprietary language and reports. Regrettably, Scott Cook (founder of Quicken) won the marketing war and now we're stuck with this beast (or MS Money, which possesses the same faults) for personal finance. Except for some obscure Linux programs, these two packages dominate the market, yet there are no publications intended for tax and accounting professionals to maximize the usefulness of this software. So if you're a beginner, dive right in and get started. If you're experienced with either Quicken or accounting or both, you're on your own. Apparently Intuit (and other publishers) want to keep us in the dark, force us to spend unconscionable amounts of time with their software, and steer customers towards Intuit's "certified" consultants.

4 out of 5 stars Personal finance software guidebook.......2005-03-07

Quicken 2005 for Dummies is the latest edition it the Quicken for Dummies series, all editions written by Stephen L. Nelson. Nelson also wrote all editions of the QuickBooks for Dummies. Whereas Quicken focuses on personal financial record keeping, QuickBooks focuses on business accounting. If your immediate interest is taxes, you might want also to check Taxes 2005 for Dummies by the same publisher, Wiley. More than a million copies of the various editions of Quicken for Dummies have been sold, and that indicates consumer satisfaction with the book in general. It is an easy-to-use guide to the popular Quicken personal finance software.

Although focused on Quicken Premier software for Windows, Quicken 2005 for Dummies contains useful guidelines, tips, and warnings for any Quicken user. The Mac user can refer to the Quick Start card that comes with the Quicken 2005 for Mac for Mac-specific information, like backing up Quicken data and keyboard shortcuts.

After a brief introduction, the book is divided into six parts, the first providing a brief overview of the Quicken 2005 software. The basics section covers checkbooks, accessing online accounts, generating reports and charts, balancing accounts, and calculators for investments, retirements, college, and taxes. The home finance section addresses credit cards, debit cards, petty cash, mutual funds, and stocks and bonds. The business section has a chapter on payroll and one on receivables and payables. The concluding section lists frequently asked questions, with answers, and provides both finance tips and Quicken troubleshooting tips. Part 6 contains an appendix on Windows and a glossary of financial and computing terms. The book also has a detailed table of contents and an index. Introductory and basic material fill half the book; home finance and business follow for those who wish to do more than basic personal financial record keeping. A reader can jump directly to text about the specific topic or task of interest at the moment. One need not read the book from start to finish.

Like all Dummies book, Quicken 2005 has marginal icons to mark tips and warnings. Bold-face type and type changes make it easy to follow step by step, and additional text expands upon each step for the novice. The text is illustrated with corresponding screen images, but these "screens" are too small for easy reading; I have to wear my glasses to read the text but remove the glasses to read the screen images.

The author warns that moving Quicken data from a Macintosh to Windows involves exporting, and he "can think of about a million things more fun to do than exporting Quicken data from a Mac to Windows" (p. 22). That is it for Mac-specific content in this book.

Another word of caution comes from Jeffery Battersby, who in MacWorld (February 2005) reviewed Quicken 2005 software. Battersby concluded his review, "In the end, Quicken remains the hands-down best way to track your personal finances," but, he added, "Quicken's tax planner is no substitute for a trip to the accountant, especially if your tax situation is even a little bit complicated." Similarly, Quicken 2005 for Dummies is a good guide for record keeping but not a substitute for a tax accountant.

That said, Quicken 2005 for Dummies will help the Quicken 2005 user get done the job of keeping personal financial records.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Quicken "Newbies" - easy to use!.......2004-11-11

I have been a Quicken user for years and have been happy with all the improvements over time! Needless to say - I have repeatedly raved about this great software, but my in-laws are computer phobes and have resisted even trying it.

I purchased "Quicken 2005 for Dummies" for them and assured them the book would answer all their questions. Well, they hemmed and hawed for a few more days, but then tried it out. It worked like a charm! Any question they had was answered quickly by the book and they now feel they invented the software! (You can only imagine how ecstatic they were when they discovered google!).

If you are new to quicken, or are already a believer and want to get someone else hooked, this book is really worth it! Thanks Mr. Nelson for a great guide to some super software!

      Book Description

Maybe your idea of an accounting system is a shoe box that you simply stuff all your receipts and statements in when you shuffle off to see your accountant once a year. Perhaps you wonder where the money goes while you sip your daily cappuccino. Or maybe your retirement planning consists of buying lottery tickets.

It’s Quicken 2006 to the rescue! America’s #1 personal finance software, it helps you balance your bank account, track income and expenses, pay bills, manage investments, plan for the kids’ college or your retirement, and more! But merely owning the software won’t help—you have to know how to use it. With step-by-step instructions and lots of screen shots, this friendly guide shows you how to:

      • Install and set up Quicken (or update from a previous version) and navigate using the financial activity centers and QuickTabs
      • Manage personal or small business bank accounts and even print checks
      • Set up and review a “Secret Plan” (the author’s term for a budget)
      • Track your tax deductions
      • Monitor your income and outgo (with eleven suggested categories for expenses)
      • Track your assets (bank accounts, investments, and real estate), and debts (home mortgage principal, loan and credit card balances, etc.)
      • Monitor stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
      • Pay bills electronically and, in some cases, do all your banking online
      • Maximize your investment earnings and minimize your taxes
      • Handle the payroll for a small business

Author and Quicken guru Stephen Nelson is a CPA, so he knows how to help you get the most from Quicken 2006 and the most for your money. This guide empowers you to take charge of your finances. It covers:

      • Using Quicken’s six powerful calculators to compare options and make smarter borrowing and refinancing decisions, more accurate savings and investment calculations, and more
      • Creating and printing reports and charts to summarize your financial information in all kinds of ways
      • Working with the Premier, Deluxe, and Basic editions of Quicken

Think about it. For less than the cost of a pair of shoes (and a new shoe box to put your valuable financial info in), you can learn how to determine exactly where your money goes and how to make it go further. Quicken 2006 For Dummies is an investment in your financial future—one that pays very good dividends.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but didn't meet my needs.......2007-01-19

I purchased the Dummies book for Quicken 2006 mainly to handle my investments and bank accounts. I have Quicken Premier 2006. This book is poor for this purpose. It provided very limited information on these topics. In the end I had to work with the help documentation for my software. BTW, the software also has many deficiencies as well. My main "beef" is that it requires that you handle certificates of deposits (CD's) as investments. It does not allow input of data or analysis of CD's as an individual financial instrument.

      4 out of 5 stars Her husband.......2006-02-25

I think that it was a great deal of help. The "Dummies" series of books on all subjects makes it easier to understand than the books that come with the product as they tend to put things in a language that is more understandable.
