5 out of 5 stars Principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong.......2005-08-05

I have used Principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler in my university days of the 1980s when I was learning the basics of marketing. It is gratifying to note that my favourite marketing reference book has been kept up to date. The latest international edition, the 11th edition (2005) is really the top quality book that one would expert of Kotler and his colleague.

"Principles of Marketing" is an excellent textbook on the current marketing trends. It is an enjoyable and practical book. After reading the book, one will really understand that marketing is all about understanding the customer needs and finding solutions that delight the customer. The reader will come to appreciate that marketing is a philosophy of doing business for those organisations that are going to thrive in the current highly competitive global markets.

This delightful book should be very useful for both newcomers to marketing and for those like me who studied marketing years ago and are at the risk of being left behind by the current marketing trends that exploit the vast opportunities presented by the internet.

Book Description

Principles of Corporate Finance is the worldwide leading text that describes the theory and practice of corporate finance. Throughout the book the authors show how managers use financial theory to solve practical problems and as a way of learning how to respond to change by showing not just how but why companies and management act as they do. The text is comprehensive, authoritative, and modern and yet the material is presented at a common sense level. The discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor for which the book is well known and highly regarded. This text is a valued reference for thousands of practicing financial managers. Richard A. Brealey and Stewart C. Myers welcome Franklin Allen as a new coauthor to this Eighth Edition. Sometimes the addition of a new coauthor means that one of the existing authors proposes to take a back seat. That is not the case with this team. Dr. Allen’s addition represents a genuine increase in capacity and brings fresh expertise and ideas to an already tremendously successful textbook and partnership.

5 out of 5 stars Just perfect........2007-09-06

Although I did not pass the exam that I took. The problem was with the exam not the book. This is an excellent book with lot of work done to ensure that the book is perfect.

The presentations available online with this book have a few mistakes.

3 out of 5 stars Not great for the beginner.......2007-07-17

This book is not very clear in its explanations and does not have too many worked examples. Not sure why my MBA school prescribes this. I recommend reading Fundamentals of Corporate Finance Standard Edition by Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield.

1 out of 5 stars Lacking Full Explanations.......2007-06-07

This book leaves me with more questions about finance than I have answers. Who do the authors think they are writing for? It surely is not the beginner MBA student. It seems like words are expensive because they do not fully or even partially explain concepts. Finance is difficult but it should not be impossible. I should not have to read and reread to figure out what the heck they are talking about. Maybe they should serve as advisors to this text and let someone who knows how to write actually write the book. These guys may be leaders and brillant but they are poor communicators. I'm not thrilled with my professor either. Is he a cheerleader or a teacher?

5 out of 5 stars Good introductory finance book.......2007-04-11

This is an easy to ready comprehensive introduction to basic finance concepts. I would not recommend it to finance majors but I consider it a good choice for general MBA or other students that do not have a stong quantitative finance background.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text - you get your money's worth.......2007-01-09

I got this book for my Intro to Corp Finance class. The professor was aweful, but the book got me through the class. There are several other finance classes that use the same text, so for once I feel like I'll get my money's worth out of a textbook.

I would have given it 5 stars if the price was lower, but that's what you get for text books these days. It was still cheaper than buying it at Berkeley's bookstore.

I found this book to be very informative and well written whith good flow and easy to understand examples. The author brings current events into the world of Microeconomics, and allows the reader to understand the underlying mechanism that drives the decisions we make. When used in conjunction with a class, or by itself, this book provides the novice with a thorough understanding of the principles of Microeconomics.

2 out of 5 stars All fluff no substance.......2007-10-05

This is a charming book and I've learned a lot about Starbucks by reading it. However, it was all fluff and no real substance and it came across as a PR piece for Starbucks.

If you're expecting a book that will give you some insight as to how to replicate the "Starbucks experience", you won't find that here. In truth, I read 1/2 to 3/4 of this book and gave up on it. After a while, it became tiresome to read anecdote after anecdote without any real substance behind it.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Reading.......2007-10-03

Why has Starbuck's seen such phenomenal success and growth in a highly competitive niche? How have they becoming synonymous with coffee the way Kleenex is to tissue?

Michelli makes the case that it's partly consistent quality coffee, but much more so the whole "experience" consumers can expect at any Starbucks.

The author breaks down what makes up the Starbucks Experience into:
      1) MAKE IT YOUR OWN
      2) EVERYTHING MATTERS
      3) SURPRISE AND DELIGHT
      4) EMBRACE RESISTANCE
      5) LEAVE YOUR MARK

He fills the book with stories that demonstrate the points made which makes it very readable. I did find the distinction between items 1-3 above a little vague and that many of the examples could easily have fit into one of the other categories he created.

I would be fascinated to hear more about how Starbuck's screens to get employees that give service well beyond the norm.

If your vocation involves any level of customer service this is for you and great to share with your friends, employees and business partners.

4 out of 5 stars starbucks is special because it is personal.......2007-09-20

this book shows why starbucks is special. At first blush, it is so glowing in its praise that it seems like propaganda. But the sheer volume of anecdotes and the homely feel of many of them quickly sink in. One in particular sticks in my mind. A starbucks shop was hiring partners (employees) and decided to hire some local homeless people. The partners chipped in to buy them suitable clothes until they could earn enough to stand on their own. Now tell me, why can't other companies do this? good question.

5 out of 5 stars Attention to Details.......2007-09-16

The Starbucks Experience provides an interesting insite as to keeping it simple and staying focused on details. From the fields to the customers, a total focus on details makes the Starbucks Experience a terrific guide on how to conduct business.

A quick read with tasty principles and mouth-watering ideas. I bought 4 copies for a church organization's staff to give them guidance as they grow to be a dynamic place in their community. (And, because Starbuck's in one of their favorite places to buy beverages!)

      3 out of 5 stars Developer Book.......2007-02-04

It's a school book with an enormous amount of information. It would take years to go through. Great for a class course where an instructor could teach the chapters quickly and point out all of the important details.

      4 out of 5 stars It's a good starting point..........2007-01-05

This book is a well intentioned attempt at explaining the development process. Unfortunately, development is too specific depending on project type and region to be easily summed up in one volume. If you are looking for a lengthy and well detailed process overview, this book is for you. If you need something a little more specific, keep searching and let me know if you find something.

3 out of 5 stars Textbook, Not Real World.......2006-09-06

Coverage of theoretical, not application. Useful for referencing concepts and reinforcing a specific point, but much more of a teaching text than reference material.

2 out of 5 stars worst than boring school text book.......2006-08-11

This book is worst than school text book!!! Don't understand how others rated this book so highly. It is full of principles and theories vs. practicle real life informations. If you want to waste $$ or if your desire is to obtain dry, boring book to help you sleep, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars all about development.......2006-02-25

This book is very helpful to the novice real estate developer or student. It's very clearly written and the information is well ordered. Ideas, concepts and explanantions are well expressed. The glossary is also helpful. Highly recommended.

The Carrot Principle illustrates that the relationship between recognition and improved business results is highly predictable--it's proven to work. But it's not the employee recognition some of us have been using for years. It is recognition done right, recognition combined with four other core traits of effective leadership.

Gostick and Elton explain the remarkably simple but powerful methods great managers use to provide their employees with effective recognition, which all managers can easily learn and begin practicing for immediate results. Great recognition doesn't take time--it can be done in a matter of moments--and it doesn't take budget-busting amounts of money. This exceptional book presents the simple steps to becoming a Carrot Principle manager and to building a recognition culture in your organization; it offers a wealth of specific examples, culled from real-life cases, of the ways to do recognition right. Following these simple steps will make you a high-performance leader and take your team to a new level of achievement.

"The Carrot Principle: How Great Managers Use Employee Recognition"
An Essay by Adam Gostick and Chester Elton
For organizations that do it right, it's a bit like discovering gold in your backyard. Employee recognition, long considered a benefit that costs money, can actually be a management tool that makes money. At first blush, the idea is counter-intuitive. As leaders, we've become accustomed to viewing recognition programs as a cost of doing business. But employee recognition is evolving. A groundbreaking research study of 200,000 employees, unveiled in our new book The Carrot Principle, presents a new paradigm: Applying employee recognition techniques within a context of goal-setting, open communication, trust and accountability, (what we have come to call the Basic Four) accelerates the impact of all of these critical management skills.

4 out of 5 stars More than the traditional Carrot!.......2007-08-21

While the title may sound like authors Gostick and Elton are espousing the positive half of the carrot and stick motivational model, the book actually demonstrates the performance improvement correlation when recognition of individual contribution and identity (purpose-based recognition) is applied to the four basics of leadership - goal setting, communications, trust, and accountability. Recognizing that the knowledge economy requires the harnessing of people's commitment, the authors advocate moving beyond a transactional management model into emotional-based management, using purpose-based recognition to build a Carrot Culture. Without using the "R" word, they espouse a relational management model, supported by recognition.

The authors do a good job of demonstrating the business performance benefits when employees are engaged with the goals of the organization. They then provide ample guidance for how to use recognition to enhance engagement, including an extensive list of ideas for use with each of their four basics of leadership. All in all, an easy read, recommended for managers who know they might do better at acknowledging the contribution of their people and are looking for something to help them get into action.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read *and* applicable.......2007-08-09

With all of the sales and managerial books out there, how to really discern which makes for a fun airplane read or which really offers applicable value? This book offers both. Both my husband and I read our library copy, and experienced it as so useful we bought our own copy.

4 out of 5 stars Important Stuff in Depth, but Nothing New.......2007-08-02

Here are the big ideas from this book.

Positive consequences, such as praise and recognition, are great tools for encouraging people to try new things and to continue desired behaviors. They send a message about what managers value.

In work teams where people say they have been praised recently, productivity, morale, and measures of engagement are more likely to be high and people are more likely to stay with the organization.

In teams where people say they have not been praised recently, productivity, morale, and measures of engagement are more likely to be lower and people are more likely to want to leave.

Companies with high productivity, morale and engagement and low turnover are more profitable.

Managers rate themselves higher on giving praise and recognition than their subordinates rate them.

There are no breakthrough, thought-leader ideas here. There is nothing really new.

The jacket blurb implies that this is based on exciting new research. It's not. It's based on research by the authors' firm that reinforces other research, including Gallup, Blanchard, a boatload of academic researchers and my own study of top performing supervisors. So if you're looking for new or breakthrough stuff, you don't have to buy the book and you don't need to read any further.

That doesn't mean that you won't get value from the book. The points the authors make are worth making again and again. Praise in all its forms is the most powerful and most underused tool for growing great, engaged teams.

Because the book is devoted, essentially, to a single idea, you get lots of depth on that idea. Some of those are just small insights.

On page 84, the authors make the point that in service industries, the perceived value of the product is tied to the behavior of the person that the customer comes in contact with. I knew this at some level, but seeing it in print got me to reflect on it and what it means.

Other things are more substantive. The authors provide details on different types of recognition: Day-to-Day; Above and Beyond; Career; and Event. They offer forms and lists and charts.

If you haven't read much about the power of praise and recognition this is a good place to start. The book covers most of the basic research, puts it in context, and gives you tools for putting it to use.

Remember that the authors wrote this book to sell their services and products. Sometimes they try way too hard to stretch their single bed blanket of product over the double bed of the subject. Sometimes they struggle to name things "carrot" or paint them orange, when simple description would do just fine.

If you're looking for a tool to use with managers at our company or in your peer group to increase the amount and effectiveness of legitimate praise, this is a good book to buy and use. You may also want to investigate the authors' other products.

3 out of 5 stars Good Idea - Doesn't Need an Entire Book.......2007-07-29

I found the overall message of this book good and for that I might give it 5 stars. However the book takes too long to try to prove itself, and is overly detailed. I found it boring and dry. I respect the authors for writing a book since that is hard to do, but it seems like too much writing for a simple message. I would rephrase the book here, except I'm not that good of a writer. My best attempt would be to say, money motivates senior management, but does not tend to motivate most employees. Focus on recognizing employees clearly for distinct behavior, and give personal rewards (not plaques, trophies, or candy), immediately, and publicly. Also have an altruistic attitude towards your employees. Most of the book is fairly obvious for progressive managers, and those who are not just won't get it. In the end I don't think it will have a earth shattering effect on your business. Instead I would recommend something, anything, by Seth Godin.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Improve a Managers Team.......2007-07-25

This is an exceptional book on how managers and executives can use recognition to retain top talent, improve teamwork, and improve performance. Recognition of employee performance, accomplishments, and contributions to the team and company has a tremendous impact on the positive influence and profit outcome for a company.
A must read for every manager in every company.

2 out of 5 stars not a well writen book.......2004-07-08

The authors don't know how to explain the theories in a easier way, on the contrary, they try to confuse you as much as they can. They also have all sorts of stupid examples which have nothing to do with reality. They are theorists, not good writers!

There are also many mistakes in the book. not too professional.

If your university requires this book, you do not have a chooose, but it is not a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Macroeconomics by Case/Fair.......2001-08-24

The authors provide an understandable presentation of the dynamics of demand/supply, the price structure, equilibrium and concepts of elasticity. The data employed is current & this version is supported by the publisher in various prior versions , as well as, this successive version. The work has considerable technological support in the form of the CD Rom and various instructional materials. The authors provide a useful "News Analysis" to integrate current events into the text. This is very useful in providing background information for students. The problem sets are topical and challenging. There is a considerable discussion of international economics and transitional economies. Overall, the text can satisfy a wide range of student interests. i.e. Those students having a quantitative orientation will appreciate the considerable graphs throughout the text. Students having a more visual learning experience will enjoy the various news items throughout the text & the extensive discussion of basic definitions. The chapter summaries and WEB exercises are helpful in integrating the material & applying the various concepts using current technologies. This text should be employed for intensive renditions of introductory economics at the collegiate level. There is an appropriate amount of microeconomic coverage in the Principles of Macroeconomics, as well as, the more comprehensive Principles of Economics work. After having read this book, students should have a firm grasp of economics and the various data employed by industry. In addition, students will become more knowledgable on current events applicable to studies in this field. This work would provide very helpful background for further studies in Price Analysis and Econometrics (Mathematical Economics).

4 out of 5 stars excellent economics text for beginners.......1999-02-12

I am teaching an Economics class at the beginning college level at a private business college. This book is one of the better business textbooks I have encountered. It provides real-life and simplistic examples to help students understand complex issues. I recommend it.
