Customer Reviews:
a good foundation book for payroll accounting.......2007-09-16
This book is very thorough and not too grotesquely boring. Accounting textbooks can seem to drag on and on but the information in this book seems to all be relevant and pertinent. There are plenty of review questions and problems at the end of each chapter and the chapters do build on each other well, so the further into the book, the more questions from previous chapters. Some other nice things about this book are the continuation problems that utilize the posting of payroll accounts and ledger pages to further help the student grasp the content.
The CDs included are wonderfully useful, too. There doesn't seem to be a relevance issue with this text as I have experienced with textbooks in the past.
Good Book.......2007-03-09
Good book, but the problems in the chapter reviews could be more discriptive as to what answer the want.
Very Helpful.......2007-03-08
I have found this book to be very helpful in gaining a practical understanding in the workings of a Payroll function. This book has helped the entire department which has recently started performing the US payrolls for our organisation. I hope that a listing of courses that currently use this book as a recomemded text is included in its next edition.
Payroll Acctg.......2007-02-16
I received this book through Amazon way before my class started. I saved quite a few bucks and it came in mint condition.
Great!.......2007-02-08
The shipping speed was great! I liked that you got it out right away and it was here for my class.

A Good Basic Overview.......2006-02-28
The title says it all--this is a good basic overview of payroll. You will not become an expert by reading it, but what can you read that makes you an expert? This book will give you the vocabulary and the tools you need to take your first steps in payroll. After that experience is the best teacher.
Valuable Payroll Resource.......2004-01-04
I think this is a good beginner-to-intermediate level book about payroll. While I doubt this book can serve as your only source to setting up a payroll system (a claim never made by the author), it can serve as a valuable guide to implementing or reviewing your current payroll internal controls, best practices and payroll policy manual. It may also help you analyze whether you are paying too much money or spending too much time on your job costing system. If you like examples, the author uses many short case studies to clarify his main points.
He keeps the book up-to-date by discussing topics such as payroll information technology, current payment alternatives and Internet references. He discusses other issues in detail, such as fringe benefits, vacation pay, minimum wage laws, payroll calculations, retirement plans, and stock option plans.
Given the popularity of outsourcing the payroll function, I think the book could have went into more detail about how to select the right payroll outsource vendor and how to ensure that the outsource vendor maintains proper internal controls (e.g. obtaining an annual SAS 70 Type II). Also, I felt I could have skipped the payroll tax portion and read IRS publication 15, 15a and 15b and my state's corresponding payroll tax publication. Finally, to help improve the books longevity, the author could have either left out the current year tax rates and limitations altogether or listed Internet references where the current and future rates and limitations could be referenced.
Nevertheless, overall I think this is a good book that I will use from time to time to brush up on my payroll process knowledge. Therefore, I think the book is worth buying, reading and referencing.

Do Not Use a Payroll Service. Learn to do Small Business Payroll Yourself........2007-07-15
I am finding "Payroll Accounting: A Complete Guide to Payroll" is truly complete. I am using it to learn how to do my small business's payroll myself. I will not need to hire an expensive payroll service to do it for me. I will still need to check with my state and with the Federal government for any tax law changes since the book was published. But after reading the book, I know where to check and what to check. This book is great if you do not have enough employees to justify paying a payroll service. For example, if you are the only employee of the corporation you own (as I am), then the cost of hiring a payroll service is unreasonably costly. After reading the book, I see there are a lot of rules; but I can understand the rules. And the book gives me confidence I do not need a payroll service.

Doesn't omit a detail.......2005-11-01
This is a classroom textbook that offers a CD. It is full of exercises that do not provide a detailed explaination if you wanted to use it to learn how to do payroll on your own. The chapters are in good order.

This is a good classroom text however more work than usual is required to learn this subject due to the mundane detail that must be covered in the first 5 chapters.
