I have to learn the use of this product well enough to be able to teach it to the workers in the offices for which I do technical support. I like this book because it presents the material in a way easy to understand and provides real life type examples that I can relate to. I want to model the lessons that I prepare after this.

4 out of 5 stars A effective training tool for Excel tutors.......2007-05-25

This particular series of instructional books (meaning the "QuickSteps" series) has always been one of my favorites -- they're concisely written in short paragraphs with decent descriptive pictures to help anyone learn just about any type of software application.

While I found this book to be fairly complete, I'd still only recommend it as a desk-side reference manual to use along with Microsoft tutorials themselves. While it is a cleverly written book that is not as cumbersome to use as other reference books on the market, it does not address all of the finer points of Excel.

All in all, it's a great reference book, and let's face it, sometimes it's just easier to review a chapter a few times to digest material rather than stare at a computer screen until you become cross-eyed.

All in all, I'd probably give this book a 4.5, but since that's not an option, I'll have to stick with 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2005-06-21

I don't use Excel all the time. But when I do I don't have time to troubleshoot problems.

This hands-on, user friendly book has helped me conquer Excel. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions.

I found that you can start from the beginning and teach yourself EXCEL with simple step by step instructions or you can flip straight to your topic of interest and further build your skills. This is a great tool for all levels of expertise.

5 out of 5 stars Review From A Psychology Student.......2005-05-17

I'm a soon-to-be-graduating Psychology student at the University of Washington and I am writing this review from the perspective of some one using excel in Social Sciences.

I found this book extremely suited to my needs...each step was very clear and precise and it was easy to find the chapter or section that was most applicable to what I was working on.

It covered all of the functions of Excel that I have used in my classes thus far. Although my intro. classes had a very brief introduction to the functions I needed, as I progressed into higher level classes and used more and more Excel I found that I needed additional specific instructions for my work. This book was very helpful in that way, and saved me the bother of forever emailing questions to my professor, as I had done before I received the book.

I actually used Excel the most to analyze the significance of data from an experiment that I had designed and to graph the results. This required quite a few steps and it was helpful to have a guide to look at as I went as opposed to trying to guess what came after the basic skills I had previously learned.

I also lent this book to a friend who works in American Ethnic Studies and used Excel to organize and make tables of data for her thesis. The American Ethnic Studies major has no background in science, so was in the position of having absolutely zero knowledge of Excel. However, with this book alone, she was able to complete the Excel portion of there thesis without any additional help.

From a student's point of view, this is a great resource if your field involves any use of Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Great quick reference.......2005-02-02

I am an infrequent Excel user, so I needed a good reference book that is well indexed. That's exactly what I got with Excel 2003 QuickSteps. It's easy to find what I need when I want it. It's very well illustrated and contains a lot of great tips. The author does an excellent job of explaining the material.

5 out of 5 stars Great for my users.......2004-09-09

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty (the concept author for the Quick Steps series) and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that they have helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Book Description

Quite possibly the easiest-to-understand product on the market, Klooster and Allen's INTEGRATED ACCOUNTING FOR WINDOWS teaches students all the aspects of computerized accounting and the operating procedures for all Windows-based programs at the same time. The software was specifically designed to be very similar to the commercial software packages used in business, which will help students hit the ground running when they get that first real job. With its updated design and improved directions, students won't become overwhelmed with the program. Coupling these refinements for the fifth edition with the gradual introduction of the software that is the hallmark of INTEGRATED ACCOUNTING, students will be able to concentrate more on the accounting principles being taught, while the software becomes second nature.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Service All the Way Around!.......2005-09-28

First of all, it took 2 weeks to get to me. Secondly, they sent the wrong book. Third, when I received the correct book, it did not have the CDRom with it. Fourth, I've emailed them about the missing CDRom, and I haven't received a response. What is going on?

1 out of 5 stars Worst accounting software I've ever encountered.......2003-05-15

This software was provided free with my Payroll Accounting textbook. The textbook itself is very well written, and is easy enough to follow. The software, however, is another story.

I am required to use this software to complete a "Payroll Problem" final project for my class. This software is so poorly put together, with help files that are less than helpful. The book instructs us to follow steps to enter data in the format desired. This is quite the challenge. For example, we're told to code Liability Payments to their respective vendors; this would normally be a reasonable request, however it was nearly impossible to even find how to do this, and when I finally did, it didn't work. I followed the instructions provided in the "help" files, and got no results. As I sit here, I still have no Cash Payments Journal, nor have I ever seen a Vendor List. When working with the "W-2 Statements" it makes no allowance for tax deferred deductions, so total wage amounts are incorrect, making the "W-2 Form" feature completly useless.

I work with Quickbooks on a daily basis (which I also have an issue or two with), and there are virtually no similarities between this program and REAL accounting software. I can see why this was given away for free, and I can only hope no one actually tries to use this to keep books for a business.

4 out of 5 stars Integrated Accounting 3e by Klooster & Allen.......2002-09-04

An excellent textbook for learing the basics of computerized accounting. Very well presented, starting with an overview of chart of account layout, AR/AP, Payroll, Partnerships & Corporations. The last chapter on setting up a complete accountig system is really nice. I am using for self study & find the book easy to follow. This is set up with college level 2 reading level assumed. This is the text currently being used by a local college for their course. Very well worth the full price of the product.

4 out of 5 stars Integrated Accounting for Windows.......2002-09-01

This book assumes you have taken a basic course in accounting, or have basic accounting background. (I find that you can get by without the accounting background, but it will take longer to complete the course). I find the text very well laid out, almost self explanatory. This is the text that most Junior Colleges are using at this time. The company is very quick at resolving any questions/problems you may encounter. I reccomend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about computerized accounting.

1 out of 5 stars Integrated Accounting for Windows, 3e ineffective and poor.......2002-08-31

I take a class for computerized accounting that uses this book. It comes with free accounting software same title as the book. The software was poorly written, poorly designed visually, and ineffective at teaching modern computerized accounting.

If your computerized accounting uses this book I would recommend dropping the class and searching for one that uses either Quicken or Peachtree. "Integrated Accounting for Windows, 3e" should have never been written in the first place if they were going to make the software so poorly.

I DO -=NOT=- RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR LEARNING WINDOWS BASED ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE.

4 out of 5 stars Open Office. Org 2.......2007-07-22

Ordered to use as reference for computer software, but felt it was not easy to follow, when trying something new on the computer....must read the entire chapter first. Otherwise, very good!

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful introduction to OO........2007-03-13

As other reviewers have suggested, the 'hype' you read about the Open Office suite is actually true. Especially in regard to sharing files with M$ Office suite. I have successfully passed spreadsheets and documents back and forth between the two without much of a hitch. As stated in other reviews, and in the book, there are differences in how some things are done, and actual capabilities of each of the two suites, but using the book will help immensely in recognizing and dealing with the issues (which, for the most part are minor). The only problem I've had with OO is one of these issues. I inserted a table with three narrow columns and over 200 rows into a designated section of a document. Then I set that section to flow that table into three columns, to save pages. However, whenever I edited the doc after that, I'd have to reformat the section, because it put the column breaks in odd places. MSWord doesn't have a problem handling the same document. I expect this little bug will be dealt with soon...another advantage of using opne source software! Congrats to Mr. Perry on a well written introduction to what I suspect will be the biggest threat to M$ yet.

4 out of 5 stars How to save money!.......2005-11-13

Good previous reveiws. Additionaly, the book is written in a format that lends itself to quick refrence. This makes it invaluable to those who in need of "How do I do that right now?". One last detail is that the program is cross-platform and can write PDF compatible files.

4 out of 5 stars interoperable with Microsoft Office.......2005-09-01

How useful is OpenOffice? Can it really replace Microsoft Office for some of you? These are the key questions that the book addresses. Many more people use Microsoft Office than OpenOffice. And if you are one of those, you've probably built up an expertise in it. Plus, you have files written in those formats. How easy is it to migrate?

Perry deals with this at great length. He goes through each program in OpenOffice. Explaining how to use it, assuming no prior knowledge on your part. The most important of which is probably Writer. In an office environment, that is what most of us do. Perry reassures you that OpenOffice understands the Microsoft file formats for Word, Excel, PointPoint or Access. More than anything else in the book, you need to appreciate that you are not giving up much (if anything) by moving to OpenOffice. You can still read those legacy files, and you can write documents in those formats and send to others using Microsoft Office.

Interoperability is a key virtue here.

Now as for the OpenOffice programs, they are no more difficult to learn than their Microsoft counterparts. Serious sweat has gone into making them as intuitive and powerful as possible. All the common operations that you might expect in a word processing program or spreadsheet are here.

Note that OpenOffice does not guarantee an exact functional mapping from Microsoft Office. So there are indeed steps you can do in the latter that are not possible in the former. But for most users, these should be uncommon operations.

The book and its CD also cover Firefox and Thunderbird. But more as an afterthought. While the coverage is well written, it tends to be less detailed than about OpenOffice itself. I somewhat agree with the previous reviewer, who considered these to be a bit of an add on to the book. Nonetheless, it was competently done by Perry.

4 out of 5 stars Learn to live without Microsoft Office..........2005-08-27

The software trio that Microsoft would love to vaporize... OpenOffice.org, Firefox, and Thunderbird. High quality software, easy to use if you already know the Microsoft equivalents, and best of all... FREE! Greg Perry has written a book that will get you up to speed quite well on it all... OpenOffice.org 2, Firefox, and Thunderbird for Windows All in One (Sams Teach Yourself).

Index

Overall, I think this book is very well done. The style is such that each chapter has a number of items (all numbered and listed in the table of contents) that focus on a particular task, such as formatting a table or inserting graphics in a document. These items are cross-referenced back to items you need to know/do before you start, as well as to items that will build on your new skills. As a result, the book works well as both a tutorial and a reference guide that you can use once you master the basics. The instructions are easy to follow, and pretty much 95% (or more) of what you'll need to do on a regular basis is covered. If someone were looking to use OpenOffice.org as their primary productivity suite instead of Microsoft Office, this would be a good book to pick up as your introduction.

My only nit about the book is the inclusion of the Firefox and Thunderbird chapters. The way it's presented makes it look like Firefox and Thunderbird are part of OpenOffice.org. They're not. And if you're buying the book for some significant coverage on those two packages, you'll be really disappointed. In the 600 pages of this book, you'll get around 50 pages to cover both. It's almost as if the topics were included in order to ride some of the current Firefox popularity. In my opinion (and it's simply that... my opinion), I would have either left those chapters out entirely or expanded them significantly. If you're wanting to know more about either Firefox or Thunderbird, you'd be much better off buying a separate book that *just* covers that.

Even with the criticism, the book is well worth having. You'll learn how to cut your dependancies on Microsoft's Office monopoly and save yourself quite a bit of money in the process...

5 out of 5 stars Simple Things to Make it Run Better.......2005-05-28

After you use Microsoft Office for a while you start to find a number of little problems or annoyances. The first one is usually that you can't find the file you are seeking. You product something, you save it, and pretty soon your directory is full of files with strange names and you can't quite remember just what they are. That's the sort of thing that the authors of this book tell you how to fix.

Eventually most of us have to learn these little tasks, but here in one book, you get a concise and complete list and description of all these little things that you should do every so often. They really will make your system run better.

This book says that it's intended for Novice to Intermediate user. I don't think this is for complete novices, perhaps just one step up. The complete novice probably doesn't know what Office is all about.

With this book you should also get the Degunking buide to other software, especially the operating system as it also tends to attract clutter.
