Excellent beginners book.......2007-08-28
As a newby and complete beginner in TA, I found this to be a near perfect book for getting your feet wet. The style is simple and straight forward with large print and easy to read charts. While there are a few typos, I did not find the excessive amount stated in the reviews of his second edition. I found the CD to be as valuable as the book. It's one thing to read a book, but actually knowing the material is what counts if you are going to apply it to trading. The CD is in multiple choice quiz format. After choosing your answer, Pring tells you in audio, not text, if you got it right or wrong and why. This way you can see if you actually understand the principals before you start risking money. Think back to your college days- how much did you learn from classes you only audited compared with those that had exams!! I dont own Murphy's book, but apparently it lacks this feature. While there is plenty of free info on the internet now, I would rather know I'm getting it from a known expert in the field. Prings book is compact and concise and can easily be read in 8-12 hours, depending on your style. While I plan to buy Murphy's book as a more comprehensive reference (over 500 pages is alot of reading), another must-have book I found is Elder's "Trading for a Living" (a psychiatrist and trader), with its psychology of crowd theory, very true of the market and an excellent supplement to anyone's collection.
Useful information........2007-01-26
I am just getting started into the world of technical analysis and trading stocks. This book is really helping me to understand some of the things I have been observing in the market. The best thing about the CD is the quizes. The reader's voice can put you to sleep - especially if you read the chapters first - he covers the exact same text.
Not for the beginner.......2006-07-02
The book does not have a glossary in the back of the book so we can look up words that the author failed to tell us the meaning. I emailed the author and asked him what certain trading terms meant in his book and I received an email back from somebody named "Lisa" that told me to look it up in the dictionary if you can't find the answer in the book. I think this person "lisa" was very unprofessional in the way she handled this email and her customer service skills need improving. There are better books than this one. This man is from another country other than America and he uses weird words to describe his examples. It's hard to understand.
Good Introduction for the beginner or as a refresher........2005-12-29
Pring does an excellent job of providing the beginner with all of the basics of technical analysis (TA). I have traded stocks for over 15 years and have been trading the spot Forex market. I learned quite a bit about TA several years ago, but thought I would like to continue my education in this area. My only problem with this particular book/CD is that the CD presentation could/should have been more polished. However, the information is all there if you take the time to look, listen, AND USE it!
View from the beginning trader.......2005-11-29
As a beginning trader I have no previous experience with which to determine the value of this book. But I'm glad that I purchased it. First off it is easy to understand and through some repetition it actually drives home the basic ideas. The CD-ROM could be a little more interactive, but having the quizzes included helps the process of self-learning. I'm sure the material can be found online, but to have it all in one book is wonderful. The basic concepts are probably academic to more sophisticated traders, but are easily applied (eg. I predicted the Intel pull-back in Aug 05 and correctly sold out my position). Whether you aspire to be a technician or a fundamentalist (Or if you're like me, you don't care) this book is a great place to start.
Book Description
The objective of this text is to teach game theoretic principles by example in order to convey the concepts in a non-technical way. Game theoretic principles are the same across a wide field of applications, yet students typically find examples in their own fields easier to relate to. This book focuses on providing a true interdisciplinary perspective that draws upon applications from many different areas of study such as management, strategic planning, competitive intelligence, military operations, economics, political science, finance, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Examples.......2007-05-08
The book makes good use of examples and follows many common examples as the learning progresses throughout the book. Chapters are broken up into managable pieces coupled with end of chapter learning exercises. The text and charts do contain a number of errors.

Book Description
Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations. Discussions include: · rheological concepts · stress-strain · data handling · experimental techniques and considerations · test methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curves · data analysis
Customer Reviews:
It may help yr experiment.......2006-07-03
The clear text will guide my experiment in composites.
The DMA technique may be helpful on several materials dynamic-mechanical characterization and this book introduces the why and how to.
Good investment to my thesis!
What I needed, when I needed it.......2001-09-27
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.
Finally! The Book That Spells Out The Answers To Questions........2000-02-09
I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.
This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.
Book Description
Michael "Tiny" Saul has built a tremendous following among day traders, short-term stock traders, and swing traders with his insightful, unbiased, real-time, chat-based market analysis and commentary in the Trendfund.com live trading chat room. Each and every day he diligently analyzes the stock market with self-taught routines to uncover the best trading opportunities. In his new book, Charting, an Introduction to Technical Analysis and its Concepts, Saul divulges the technically based analysis and routines he employs in his real-time and end of day work.
Unlike most books on technical analysis, which include too much extraneous material and leave the trader poorly equipped to face daily challenges, Saul focuses on how to use a specific set of technical methods into a unified strategy for selecting short-term trading opportunities in all market environments.
Instead of being deluged with technical concepts, Saul teaches traders to focus on the methods necessary to pull the trigger on trades. Experienced traders will find Saul's direct and easy to follow approach a breath of fresh air as he concentrates on what trading is really all about: finding consistent money-making opportunities.
Customer Reviews:
He is what he sounds like.......2005-12-17
It's a rare experience picking up a book about a seemingly boring subject and not being able to put it down. That's what I call style. They call him "Tiny" but he's a huge source of knowledge and introspection. He makes the subject grow on you and you can feel the intensity of his expertise on the subject. This man is an obvious winner and this book is an accurate representation of that man. As you go through the basics your base of knowledge grows exponentially. The subject matter becomes interesting and even the charts and illustrations make sense the way he explains them. The writing is incredibly fluid and one subject flows into the next. I understand that this is Saul's first book but I ceratinly hope its not his last. His intellect and Parness's intuition combine to give us an unbeatable team. I really can't see either man working indeoendent of one another. Charting is the soul of the what stock to buy, when to buy and at what price and what is your exit and risk minimization parameters. All of this applied through charting to generate profits in the stock market. This is a winning book written by a proven winner. It is a must buy for anyone in or going to be in the stock market. I can't wait for the next book.
A Waste of Time and Money.......2005-12-13
There are so many other books on technical analysis that are more comprehensive than this one (e.g. Kamish, How Technical Analysis Works). I bought it because I had received so much good information at Trendfund.com, the website affiliated with Tiny. I had hoped that this book would continue with great real life examples of successful trades. The book does a poor job of discussing general technical analysis tools. I was disappointed. I'm willing to sell my copy for $10. I can't imagine anyone giving this book 5 stars unless they have a financial interest in the book's success. Of course, you can get all this information for free by logging on to Stockcharts.com.
A Waste of Time and Money.......2005-12-13
I ordered this book because I had received so much good information from Trendfund.com, the website that Tiny is affiliated with. What I got was a book that does an incomplete job of describing a limited number of general technical analysis tools. There are so many other book that are more complete, like Kamich ,"How Technical Analysis Works", which I also own and would recommend hands-down over this book.
Great for beginners and more advanced traders.......2005-04-23
I give this 4 stars, because I never rate anything a 1 or a 5.
This book is for serious traders, not for those with an MBA in finance. There is a difference. I don't have an MBA, but I make money almost every day using technical analysis. I have learned a lot of that from Michael Saul. There is a learning curve, and if you have financial baggage or a "sure thing" kind of investing attitude, you might as well forget this book.
The details can be a bit much for beginners, but just paper-trade with the info at first until you begin to get the feel of it.
This book teaches you how to recognize the signals (like reversal bars, bull flags) that the market is sending about shifts in momentum and direction. It is amazing how well it works. Not every time, but more often than not, it's correct. And that's all you need if you want to make money day trading.
This is not investing, and requires study (like charting/TA books) and daily research. It's not for everyone, and you must learn the material, and then test it on paper before you trade for real, just so you'll be comfortable with the accuracy of technical analysis.
I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was referring to concerning hawking infomercials - I don't think anybody ever sold a book by itself on an infomercial. Certainly not one as dry as a technical analysis book. And specialty books get self-published all the time, especially when the potential market for them is so small (that probably explains the high price, I would think). I'm not trying to defend Michael Saul; he doesn't need it. It just seems strange that someone would use those silly comments to try to discredit a book that he admits he can't understand.
On the negative side, it IS EXPENSIVE. If you can get it used, save yourself some money. I also agree with another reviewer that much of the information here IS available on the web, but you'd really already need to know it before you'd know where to find it. Not to mention you'd have to wade through plenty of bad info to find the good stuff on charting on the internet (been there, done that). Save yourself the time and hassle by getting the book.
Bottom line, it's a good, accurate, (but expensive), technical analysis book. I recommend it.
Great book for Beginners.......2004-09-02
It's a great book if your just starting to get into trading, a bit pricy but worth the info. On the bad side is that alot of trading info is on the web now. If you look really hard you could probably find all of the stuff scattered over the web. But a beginner wouldn't know where to start. Like how he goes over TA indicators like ADX and RSI, but if you didn't know what they were in the first place then you wouldn't know where to look. Concise and full of info.

Book Description
Keeping mathematics to a minimum, this book introduces nuclear properties, nuclear screening, chemical shift, spin-spin coupling, and relaxation. It is one of the few books that provides the student with the physical background to NMR spectroscopy from the point of view of the whole of the periodic table rather than concentrating on the narrow applications of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Aids to structure determination, such as decoupling, the nuclear Overhauser effect, INEPT, DEPT, and special editing, and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy are discussed in detail with examples, including the complete assignment of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of D-amygdain. The authors examine the requirements of a modern spectrometer and the effects of pulses and discuss the effects of dynamic processes as a function of temperature or pressure on NMR spectra. The book concludes with chapters on some of the applications of NMR spectroscopy to medical and non-medical imaging techniques and solid state chemistry of both I = F1/2 and I > F1/2 nuclei. Examples and problems, mainly from the recent inorganic/organometallic chemistry literature support the text throughout. Brief answers to all the problems are provided in the text with full answers at the end of the book.

Download Description
"This series of books provides coverage of all of the major analytical techniques and their application in the most important areas of physical, life and materials science. Each text is presented in an open learning/distance learning style, in which the learning objectives are clearly identified. The reader's understanding of the material is constantly evaluated by the use of self-assessment and discussion questions. The combination of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been a routine analytical tool for many years, while the related hybrid technique of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a rather more recent development. However, with the advent of new interfacing technology, the benefits of this powerful hybrid analytical method are now currently being realised, as witnessed by the exponential growth in applications of this technique in both the chemical and life sciences. The topics covered in this text include the following: The basic principles of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The limitations of the component techniques when used in isolation, and how a combination of the two allows these to be overcome. Descriptions of the various approaches, including thermospray, electrospray and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, which are used to interface the two techniques, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Illustrative examples of the applications of LC-MS, including the molecular weight and structure determinations of both biopolymers and low-molecular-compounds, along with the development of quantitative methods. Key features include: The provision of many discussion and self-assessment questions throughout the text, thus providing opportunities for testing the reader's understanding of the subject matter. Presented in the AnTS (open learning/distance learning) style, it is ideal for use as both a self-study guide and as the basis of a taught course.
Customer Reviews:
A very good book for beginners and students.......2005-07-19
This book is very fundamental. For someone with little knowledge about HPLC-MS, this is the right book for him/her. IF you want to learn LC/MS, start with this book.

Book Description
Following the rollercoaster ride of the day-trading boom, independent investors and finance professionals alike are seeking a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of technical stock analysis -- information that will help them make better market moves.
Technical analysis can be a crucial factor in both individual and corporate investment strategy. This introduction to the Magee System distills an immense amount of complex information into an accessible (though no less authoritative) compilation of essential topics such as:
* Dow theory and the bar chart * Short-, medium-, and long-term trends and patterns * Support, resistance, and stops * Risk management and control * Number-driven and computerized statistical analysis
This is a definitive presentation -- from an undisputed authority.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but nothing new.......2002-06-24
This is a reasonable introduction that covers all the important things. The focus is (as it should be) on money management, and very simple (but effective) technical analysis. Support & Resistance, trendlines, and moving averages are the primary mechanisms used. I thought it was a little confused, at parts, and found myself comparing it to John Murphy's Visual Investor. They both seem to have a similar target audience (people new to technical analysis). On the one hand, The Magee book covers money management which Murphy seems to do a poor job covering in his books (Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets has a bit on it, but nothing extensive -- none of his other books mention it at all), but the Visual Investor gets the nod for just being a better written effort.
If this is your first book on TA, you should be fine, although I think Visual Investor covers the topic better. If you are already familiar with the basics, I would pass this one over for a more advanced book.
Customer Reviews:
More Rigorous Than Some Introductory Texts.......2003-11-01
I purchased Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces two years ago. I was unprepared for its rigor. I am not a mathematics major, but I enjoy reading mathematics. My background includes calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and other applied mathematics, but I have not had a course in real analysis. W. A. Sutherland intended this text as the next step after analysis.
After a brief foray, I retreated, placed Sutherland back on my bookshelf, and attacked some marginally easier introductory texts: Metric Spaces by Victor Bryant, Introduction to Topology by Bert Mendelson, and most recently, several chapters in Introduction to Analysis by Maxwell Rosenlicht. I periodically return to W. A. Sutherland's text to measure my understanding. I am now working on chapter five, Compact Spaces.
I doubt that Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces would be foreboding to students that are familiar with real analysis. Sutherland understands that the abstractness and generalization can be difficult and shows concern with motivating the student. He repeatedly attempts to illustrate the value of generalization, especially in the study of continuity.
Sutherland often uses a lengthy series of examples of increasing difficulty to illustrate abstract concepts. In his discussion of metric spaces, we begin with Euclidian n-space metrics, and move on to discrete metric spaces, function spaces, and even Hilbert sequence spaces. He introduces open sets and topological spaces in a similar fashion.
The author occasionally suggests that the student might wish to make a geometrical diagram to help clarify some subtle point, but Sutherland includes few geometrical drawings in his text. His focus is clearly on proofs using the axioms of metric spaces and topological spaces.
Sutherland highlights sections that either require more knowledge of abstract algebra, or for other reasons are thought to be more severe.
Despite Sutherland's use of Introduction in the title, I suggest that any reader considering independent study might defer tackling Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces until after completing a more basic text. Possibly a better title might be A Second Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces.
An excellent, concise book on topology and metric spaces........2000-09-14
I enjoyed reading this book because of its clarity, conciseness, and nice way of relating topological and metric spaces. This book is ideal for the student who is learning about these subjects for the first time, whether or not they intend to do more advanced work on the subject. The reader who wants to go on and learn about more advanced topics, should consult Munkres's book.
A great self-contained text.......2000-09-12
A lot of books on topology assume some basic knowledge of real analysis, which can throw a lot of readers off. This book starts from the very beginning, and thus is truly a great introduction. Each section has some good exercises, with even a few pointers at the back of the book for the more challenging ones. It starts with topological aspects, and then refers to them in the case of metric spaces (amongst many others), which is a much better approach than most other books, as the reader doesn't take the details of the specific to the general. A great little book, which is a must for most advanced maths Analysis courses.

Book Description
Introduction to NMR Spectroscopy R. J. Abraham, School of Chemistry, University of Liverpool J. Fisher, Biological NMR Centre, University of Leicester P. Loftus, Stuart Pharmaceuticals, Delaware, USA This book is a new, extended edition of Proton and Carbon 13 NMR by R. J. Abraham and P. Loftus. The initial chapters cover the fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy commencing with an explanation of how the nuclear magnetic response occurs, followed by a detailed discussion of chemical shifts and coupling constants, parameters not discussed to any length in other textbooks aimed at a similar level of interest. Emphasis is given to the vectorial description of multipulse experiments, as this is probably the easiest way to grasp how different information may be gained simply by changing a pulse sequence. An understanding of multipulse NMR is a prerequisite for understanding 2D NMR. The section on 2D NMR begins with a discussion of the resolved experiment. This is a logical initial choice as the spectra produced by this experiment may be readily compared with 1D spectra. Following on from this both heteronuclear and homonuclear correlation spectroscopy are described and examples given. The final section of the book should be considered as an applications section. It is aimed at showing the reader that NMR is not just of use to the synthetic organic chemist but is also of use to biochemists for investigating the solution state structure and function of proteins, enzymes, etc. The application of high resolution NMR to the solid state is also discussed, thereby indicating the developments which have taken place as far as spectrometer hardware is concerned.
