Book Description

All parents, regardless of age, income, or marital status, have the same goal—to do the best possible for their child. But despite one’s good intentions, the life-enhancing abundance heaped on our children often becomes more than they need or can handle, and the line is crossed into overindulgence. In How Much is Enough?, best-selling parenting and family experts Clarke, Dawson, and Bredehoft offer an in-depth look at how damaging overindulgence is to children, affecting their ability to learn many of the important life skills they need to thrive as adults. In warm and empathetic language, the authors reveal the three different ways children are overindulged (giving too much, being over-nurturing, and providing soft structure), guide parents in determining whether they’re doing something overindulgent, and show them how to do things differently. The truth is that overindulgence is not the badge of a bad parent; in fact, it comes directly from having a good and generous heart. Based on solid, groundbreaking research involving 1,200 parents and their children, How Much is Enough? gives parents the insight and advice they need to parent in an effective and loving way and put their children on track for a happy and successful life.

5 out of 5 stars Wish all parents would read this..........2007-08-18

A very readable book loaded with straightforward advice that can be easily implemented.

I bought this book fearing that perhaps it was for wealthy parents. Not the case. Rather, the book argues convincingly that children of all socio-economic backgrounds can be and too frequently are overindulged.

"Johnnie go to your room. OK?" Wrong. "Johnnie go to your room. Do you understand?" Right. Big difference. It turns out that it's little things that make a big difference.

This one is a definite must-read.

4 out of 5 stars Made the wife happy.......2007-07-28

I didn't read, but she told me about it for a couple of weeks, so I felt like I read it. And saved the effort. Anyway, we spoil our kids rotten compared to when I was coming up, but where does positive reinforcement end and spoiling begin? This books helps you to draw the line. Which is hard, because she's with them all day, and during the week I'm at work a lot and on the weekends, sometimes I want to get them something; or when I'm going to eat at Tyson's, the urge is to buy a little something at the lego store or a new game chip. Ah, who thought raising good kids was this hard,

Good book though.

5 out of 5 stars How Much Is Enough?.......2007-03-09

This book is amazing. Something here for every parent, grandparent, educator, employer, etc.

I was impressed with this research driven book. It contains countless interviews and real-life situations. The stories tell great lessons.

I see this as a window into the family dynamics of many children today.

I experienced self evaluation and a greater understanding of people I encounter in my daily life.

Worth every penny...buy it. emk.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-07-05

Instead of giving me yet another methodology for parenting, this book gave me a gauge to measure and to understand the methodology I was using. It also helped me define goals for my children in terms of behavior now as well as the eventual outcome of functioning adulthood!

I originally got it from the library, but aftere returning it I found myself thinking back to it so often that I had to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Overindulgence: a plague on our society........2006-05-09

I have found this book to be extremely practical in its application to everyday life, both as a parent and beginning-therapist. It provides readers simple ways to identify overindulgence and methods for avoiding or overcoming it. This is a must-have for parents who believe that children benefit from clear boundaries. WARNING: it may cause you to rethink your parenting style and increase self-awareness! :) More work from these authors on the subject matter is requested.

Book Description

In a world filled with both prosperity and poverty, how can Christians handle their finances in a way that honors God? In How Much Is Enough?, Arthur Simon takes an uncompromising look at America's wealth, reflecting what dominates the hearts and motivations of its people. He diagnoses Western civilization as sick with ''affluenza,'' or runaway materialism, and shows readers how to reject the disease and set new priorities. Churches, social ministry groups, and thoughtful readers will be enlightened by Simon's grasp of Western affluence against the backdrop of a world where 800 million people are chronically starving. Readers will gain a clearer understanding of how money becomes an object of worship when passion for material things is stronger than compassion for the poor. Simon's life-changing book also reveals how affluenza takes control of people's lives and goals. Without discounting prosperity as a blessing, How Much Is Enough? proposes new pathways to living as disciples of Jesus. It suggests a myriad of solutions for taming materialism and sheds light on the profound reality that possessions may capture our hearts, but they are unable to nourish our souls.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Those Wanting To Live a Life of Integrity.......2003-06-27

Arthur Simon has written a masterpiece. Being insightful but not judging, Simon describes why our culture keeps us from focusing on what is truly important and gently instructs us how to live a life of purpose and integrity. This easy to read book leaves us with a haunting feeling that there is so much more that we can do to make the world a better place. It forces us to leave our self-centered being to reach out and serve others. How Much Is Enough also demonstrates how adopting this framework for living will in turn benefit you as well as those you serve.

Even before September 11, more and more of us were expressing dissatisfaction with the widening imbalance between our personal and professional lives--and our numbers have doubtlessly increased since that day. Pamela York Klainer, an executive coach and workplace consultant, had been watching this feeling grow among her clients, and How Much Is Enough? offers her well-considered strategy for bringing career and home life into better harmony. Klainer's underlying premise is that we all have a "money story," a lifelong ingrained perspective on capital and the possessions it can buy that establishes our directions in life and work, and eventually whether we are happy with the results. Utilizing tools like a "money autobiography," she offers a method to help us understand the way we truly feel about money and the amount of it we think we need to meet our own definition of success. More importantly, she then shows how knowledge of where such thinking originates, and how it evolves, can be used for adjusting actions to reach goals that prove more satisfying. "How much is enough" may indeed be the underlying question we all need to answer for ourselves before a desirable equilibrium can be attained. --Howard Rothman

        Book Description

The successful consultant dubbed the "money shrink" by Money Magazine shares her strategies for conquering the last taboo: understanding and taking charge of our relationship to money.

Whether we are CEOs of our own start-ups, senior executives with stock-option packages, or keepers of modest 401(k) accounts who watch the NASDAQ with terror, our relationship to money and work defines our daily lives. Yet, most of us don't really know what we want from work or how the time we devote to making money relates to the "rest" of our lives.

How Much Is Enough? urges us to step back and ask how money and success point us toward a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of self-worth. In this path-breaking book, executive coach and consultant Dr. Pamela York Klainer shows us how to improve our often-troubled relationship to money.

Supported by real-life anecdotes and time-tested insights, Klainer uses "money" as a window into the core values and behavior of successful people--and of those working hard to be successful. Based on her experience as a consultant to thousands of leaders in fast-growing companies, Klainer offers a practical framework for defining--and linking--money, the drive for success, and our longing for happiness. Millions of us--from the boardroom to the home office--are shaken by turbulent markets and feel unable to shake the pressure to do more, better, faster. Dr. Klainer gives us the tools we need to channel the power of money in creative ways, so that we can map out the road to a more meaningful and happy life.

Harness the power of your own life's "money story" as Dr. Pamela York Klainer shows you how to answer the four basic money questions:

        · Do you see money as for "me" or for "we"?

If it's for "me," how do you create a sense of meaning about your life? If it's for "we," how can you find time outside of work?

        · How do you manage the power of money?

Can you use your money to create meaningful difference in the world without riding roughshod over other people's desires and aspirations?

        · Do you see yourself as a provider or an organizer?

How do you negotiate ownership of these roles, at home and in the workplace?

        · How much is enough?

What amount of money will allow you to stop driving so hard? If you don't like to focus on money, why not? What are you missing?

Money choices are about exercising personal power. By changing our money story, we can--in new and powerful ways--change who are about to become.

1 out of 5 stars Smug and superficial.......2003-08-23

This book is poorly organized and repetitive. Its tone is smug and condescending. There are some good ideas, but they could have been presented in a magazine article, not a full book.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish This Book was Written 40 years ago.......2003-04-30

Upon the recommendation of a friend, I just read this wonderful book, "How Much is Enough?" My friend saw Dr. Klainer speak, and was so impressed that she rushed out and bought the book, and then passed the book to me. I saw myself in her book as the person who did meaningful, but low-paying work, and now find myself at retirement age, but without the means to do so. And my son has also chosen work that is low paying, probably due to money attitudes that he inherited from me. I have passed my copy on to him, and for the first time in my life, had a conversation about money with him. It wasn't easy. But I hope that it is the start for him to look at his money story as I share mine.

Beyond the personal message for me, this book is so well-written; I feel that I know the author, and would like to meet her in person, or hear her speak. She brings to life all of the other money stories that she conveys to her readers. This is a book to read many times for new insights.

        1 out of 5 stars Enough Already!.......2003-04-09

The book talks endlessly about the "problems" of spoiled Si Valley types who basically have millions of $, but no soul. Most of the examples tell of people who have second and even third homes, income into 6 figures, and a net worth into 7 figures. I had to chuckle when the author writes about her kid's cars on pg 19, "Both bought their cars outright with their own earned money, not by tapping the assets that have been gifted to them." Excuse me, -- Gifted to them--- what planet is this lady from? Obviously this is a book for the Si Valley power bunch, not for the average Joe who has never been "gifted" a darn thing.

The inside front cover flap of the book says, "..The first money book built on the idea that you need to understand what money means to you before you drive yourself crazy trying to get it...." I guess they never saw the Dominguez classic _Your_Money_or_Your_Life. Domenguez uses the concept of "life energy" and does a much better job.

The book uses too many words to explain simple concepts. The book could have been half as many pages, if not 1/4 as many. For example, on page 180, the author talks about her bike with the gel saddle sitting the the garage, and how her husband wants to go on a long ride for this birthday. --Who Cares, and what does this add to the book's message?

Over and over again, I see the theme of "Women good, men bad." More often than not, the Women are the heros and men are the dorks. For example, in the story of the liquor store owners, the wife saved the day -- this is a recurring theme with many other examples.

I laughed out loud when I got to Pg 43, "In 1999, talk about explicit sexual practives became a formal part of the Congressional Record via the Starr investigation." -- Excuse me, why not call it the Clinton Investigation, or even the Clinton Impeachment Process?

In the Power and Money section, she writes, "..it's more effective to run for elective office with your own money - as [did] presidential candidate Steve Forbes." Hmmm, I have no idea how this author measures effectiveness. How was Forbes more effective than the others? Did Steve Forbes win? Does anyone even remember that Steve Forbes ran?

One other chuckle I had reading this book was about the guy who said it was more difficult to come out as "a millionaire" than to come out as "gay." Well, buddy, you can always give up all that cash and then you can come out as "average," or even "poor" if you like. Life ain't that bad, and your rich man's problem is so easily solved.

I did not see the point of this book at all. I don't expect many copies of this book to sell.

I want the book, but I can't read. I came on, hoping it would be on a CD, but no luck. Is there anyway you can notify me if and when it goes on a CD? Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Enough to Keep Haunting Me!.......2002-02-16

This book keeps "coming up" in my mind. It raised questions that I know I must explore. It's an easy read, made quite engaging though skillful use of real people's stories (including the author's). But it's not a simple read! It asks readers to look carefully at their own life stories, choices, intentions and meaning-making. The book equally values perspectives often seen as mutually exclusive. However, it asks us to more fully understand the implications of the perspectives we hold and the results we create in our lives out of those "stories" through which we view the world. I read a lot and almost never re-read a book or "push" others to read a particular book. With HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH, I'm doing both.

3 out of 5 stars Good but something was missing.......1998-09-11

I read the book. I agreed with all the points. I was properly impressed with his statistics and anecdotes. But overall I felt something was missing, although I can't put my finger on it. After reading this book, rather than feeling charged up to go and do something about it I felt rather ho-hum instead. I don't think the book is polemical enough. It doesn't offer clear cut guides on what needs to change. The threat is always vague, "We can't keep this up or someday we'll run out." His discussion of the necessity of growth left me unconvinced, even though I desperately wanted to be convinced. The book is an interesting read, but it was just lacking something that kept it from being amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and informative evaluation of the consumer society.......1998-07-06

Has it ever occurred to you that Americans go to shopping malls more often than they attend church or synagogue? Did you know that, directly or indirectly, we consume our own weight in basic resources EVERY DAY? Half a billion people--those who belong to the consumer society--use up almost all of the world's resources and create most of the pollution. This is one of those books that leaves a lasting impression upon the way you perceive the society you live in. This book is not only a smooth read, but is PACKED with carefully researched information in a most wonderful way. Durning backs up all his statements with solid facts. What else would you expect from a senior researcher at the Worldwatch Institute? And aside from the conscientious fact-checking, Durning has another Worldwatch habit: he not only presents complex problems in understandable ways, but also presents multi-pronged, workable solutions. Overall, a concise book chock full of careful thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Is Your "Money Attitude" Putting You at Risk?.......2006-09-25

As a CPA and attorney whose practice is devoted to addressing clients' retirement and estate planning needs I especially liked that Diane McCurdy's How Much is Enough: Balancing Today's Needs with Tomorrow's Retirement Goals helps readers figure out their "money attitude." For instance, are you a spender or a saver? Once you understand your own spending patterns and habits you can take steps to avoid the financial pitfalls common to each attitude. Perhaps the most important benefit of the book is that it helps readers choose their "Enough Number"--the amount that will be "Enough" for them after they retire. And she doesn't forget to factor in all of those things that concern us the most, like how we will afford those special luxuries on our retirement wish lists. Great job Diane! I will definitely be recommending How Much is Enough to my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Now VS Later.......2006-08-26

I'm part of the baby boomer generation and as we near retirement age, we worry. Have we lived too extravagantly and not planned and saved enough for retirement?
That's what this book is all about. McCurdy reminds us that it's never a good idea to go into debt unnecessarily. She recommends finding inexpensive ways to treat yourself and saving up for the big things. Too many people that I know have indulged themselves with fancy cars and exotic vacations without thought for the future. Here's a book that will help balance out current needs (and desires) while helping plan for retirement.

5 out of 5 stars "Money Personality" A Useful Tool In Financial Planning.......2005-10-06

As a financial advisor, I recommend this book to clients who need a good overview of money management and retirement planning. There are lots of books on specific types of investing, but this one is different. It's a comprehensive tool that gives clients a better understanding of what we're doing and enables them to ask more pertinent questions. The "money personality" aspect is a very useful device in helping people understand why they use money the way they do. My clients report that the book is very motivating too.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Key Elements to Financail Independence.......2005-10-05

I was very pleased with this book. It address the big issues and stays on the high ground instead of getting into all the technical details. I found it very empowering and just the right mix of stories to drive the key points home.

Diane takes complicated subject matters down to the basics for all of us, and does it beautifully. This is a must read for the responsible person desiring financial fulfillment and freedom. A retirement nest egg should start immediately, and Diane explains the various choices in one the most user friendly formats I've seen in a long time. Once we understand ourselves, our wants and needs, then the financial trappings/battles can be overcome and won. She does a masterful job in helping us identify who we really are.
