Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars useful advice for many practices.......2006-05-27

Much of the advice in the book is applicable to any professional who wants to start her own practice. Not necessarily restricted to mental health workers. She offers useful tips in many mundane details of getting started and also in minimising your costs. The latter is vital, especially if you are starting a new practice of your own, and probably will have to carefully watch expenditure.

The extended discussion about dealing with insurance companies probably understates the amount of effort [paperwork] required in actually getting reimbursed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to starting a practice.......2006-02-21

Forget the fact that the author is a psychologist. Do not let that dissuade you from purchasing this book if you are not in the mental health care field. Perhaps 98% of the information is applicable to any health care provider wanting to establish a private practice.

The book is filled with treasure. The first sections elaborate on where to look for a potential office/clinic, what questions to ask the prospective building manager (and when to ask them), and how to get an effective phone/voicemail system established. The section on cancellation policies alone is worth the price of the book, as are Dr. Hunt's examples of how to diplomatically pursue outstanding payments. She also devotes a sizable portion of the book to navigating the difficult realm of insurance. To put a human face to the book, Dr. Hunt showcases her past successes and failures (and those of her colleagues) in her first attempts at establishing a private practice.

This book is excellent -- very engaging and seldom boring, concise and pithy. It provokes a proactive spirit. It should be required reading for any health care worker fresh out of school, about to begin a private practice, and with little to no business experience.

5 out of 5 stars Great on office practices and getting paid.......2006-02-14

I could have used a bit more on marketing, but really like this book. I bought it after "How to Survive and Thrive as a Therapist" which had more on the practice itself and not so much on the business end of things. A very helpful book and I am SO glad I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Essentials of Private Practice.......2005-09-15

Holly Hunt's book, Essentials of Private Practice has been helpful to me in setting up my private Coaching business.

I found the sections on setting up phone practices and cancellation policies especially helpful. I was able to avoid costly mistakes because of the experiences Holly Hunt shared.

In addition, the section on selecting an office helped me select the right office for me. Now I am moving into a successful Coaching business, that is efficient and effectively managed.

5 out of 5 stars Important Contribution.......2004-11-21

I agee with the other reviewers completely. This book was engaging to read, clear, and the charts were practical. I enjoyed the authors use of her own experiences as well as the experiences of other practitioners. The narrative format created an interesting way to address sensitive issues and potentially difficult areas involved in practice. I found the book to address the delicate aspects of the relationship shared between clients and therapists and the issues that are the hardest with which to deal because they highlight that mental health work is about helping people and business, and how business, treatment and ethics are intertwined.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Essentials of Health Care Finance.......2007-09-10

This is a very difficult book to digest if you are not familiar with accounting concepts. This is not a beginner text! The text is written in a very broad context, however, the expectation in my class was to apply the broad concepts to detailed financial problems. This was difficult because Cleverly offerred few examples to help apply the difficult financial concepts. I found the text to be utterly frustrating!

1 out of 5 stars Essentials of Health Care Finance.......2003-06-19

I bought the book of Essentials of Health Care Finance, it was delivered on time, however, some papers insided the book are very dirty, I can see the brown oily figure prints. I wish that I can exchange the book ...

4 out of 5 stars Troubling Guide to Alien Territory.......2001-08-23

This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person. It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person. Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts. It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models.

This reader studied Cleverly's text as a requirement for a healthcare finance class. The text was frustrating as this reader attempted to "know" everything about healthcare finances; however, this is probably not the intent of the book. It does present a road into the foreign land of finances. It demands respect for another set of data and another language for interpreting that data. One does not master this data set at one pass, however.

Nevertheless, this reader did gain some new financial information. At the risk of being simplistic, but communicative; a listing of some of the concepts learned follows:

1. There are many users of financial information.

2. Financial information can guide the formation of programs.

3. Financial management is essential for successful healthcare organizations.

4. Various qualities of health care organization types.

5. How health care organizations make up for discouting and bad debt and capitated payments.

6. General principles of accounting and why they are important. Also that these principles still need to be explained, to be consistent, and to be clarified.

7. Overview of four main types of financial statements with a brief explanation of vaious line items.

8. That financial planning includes considering inflation before it happens, and for equipment etc. to break and wear out before it breaks or wears out.

9. That financial information can be better understood by comparing financial ratios of different line items and trends over time. There are national benchmarking ratios available and Cleverly gives some and tells how to get more.

10. That financial planning should be an orderly process in an organization.

11. There are different types of costs. Some stay the same, some are overhead types. Some are direct, some are hidden. Some can be controlled, some cannot.

12. Figuring out prices is a very complex process in healthcare. It is based on costs and payers. It must also include indirect costs and costs of future problems.

13. There is still stuff to learn . . . And this reader is still no expert.

Finally, after this MSN course and this text, this reader is more conversant with the financial landscape. It holds interest and it is understandable, after all.

2 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2000-01-08

I have finished about 5 different chapters for a Masters degree course I am taking. This book is not for beginners! I am an RN and have been working in business for 10 years. The author assumes that you have had basic accounting and the terminology is unfamiliar. There are very few examples given so it is hard to take the information and see how it is really used. I have had to buy another book just so that I could understand this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Cleverley is the guru of healthcare finance.......1999-08-27

This book represents the foundation on which all healthcare organizations should examine their financial strength and management. While not for beginners, it provides a comprehensive overview of reporting and benchmarks that prove invaluable during the budgeting process and for financial control.

A useful handbook for accounts payable professionals. A wide-visioned summary & comparison from accounts payable operations of many companies of various types. Describe things in very details. It will be better if the best practices are more focused to be articulated. Overall, this book would enable someone in this area to achieve a more systematic perception into accounts payable.

This book gives businesspeople the know-how they need to do business on the Net. Author Larry Chase divides the book into two parts: one for using the Net within your business and the other for marketing it on the Net. Chase shares his extensive experience, offering solid advice to help even a novice approach the Net with savvy.

In short order, Chase shows you how to integrate the Net into your business, using Net services to cut costs and get information fast. He displays dozens of ways to reduce overhead, from sending faxes over the Net to distributing documents by e-mail instead of print. An excellent chapter lists the finer points of using the Net to locate and recruit employees. The book also features the best ways to make use of the Net's information gold mine, including how to gather corporate intelligence on your competitors. The author thoughtfully presents ways to keep yourself anonymous while looking at the competition.

It becomes clear that the author is a seasoned professional when he describes how to bring your business to the Web and how to market it. He advises you to avoid the temptation of spam and to keep the splashy graphics on your Web pages to a minimum. He also addresses sales support, public relations, selling retail, promotions, and more. The book ends with a dozen useful closing tips. --Elizabeth Lewis

      3 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much.......2001-07-01

The book is useful, but very basic. If you are a true web nerd ;-), you probably already know most of the stuff in this book. It's still worth reading it, but don't expect too much.

5 out of 5 stars This guy knows his stuff! And he can tell it!.......2000-06-12

What an education can be found in this book! Larry Chase, already well known in the field, has written THE book to have on web strategies. Forget all those Johnny-come-lately web books out there, whether you're B2B or B2C, this book is 4U! I think it's incredibly clear, well-written and presents timeless strategies in an easy-to-use manner. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Implements strong marketing principles relevant to the net!.......1999-10-28

No whiz-bang gen-x mindset stuff here. Useful easy to understand business and marketing practices that are current and relevant to the net. This book will give you a practical and educational edge. Definately useful, easy reading helps too.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, especially for business folks new to the net!.......1999-10-25

Chase is obviously savvy and yet writes in a style easily assimilated by the novice. Perhaps his use of novice Nancy Hangar aided him in his "beginner-friendly" approach.

5 out of 5 stars Chase Packs Net Mktg Expertise in New Book.......1999-08-09

Larry Chase's email newsletter, Web Digest for Marketers, has long been an essential read for both experts and newcomers to e-business. His new book does an excellent job of packaging his expertise on the complex and fast-chaning topic of selling and marketing online. As the author of a popular book on the subject myself -- Net Results: Web Marketing That Works -- I appreciate the clarity of Larry's insights about the Net's power for competitive research, customer data mining, promotions and more.

5 out of 5 stars Cost Management Handbook.......2007-07-16

Per reading the book, I found it brief and straightforward, but very helpful. I consider it as a quick cost management guide/handbook. Several approaches and techniques were provided, and supported by examples.

In particular, I found the RBS, Estimating Models and Progress Monitoring sections rich and very helpful. However, I was hoping for a bigger meal on the Earned Value topic. I think this could be an addition to any future editions.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly as Advertised.......2006-01-30

Book was received in a very timely manner and exactly as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars One of the top books on project estimating I've read.......2002-08-19

At 136 pages this book covers a wide array of important topics and techniques in depth. The main value of the approach the author provides is that it's both effective and consistent with best practices in project estimating.

In particular, the deliverables-based work breakdown structure approach that forms the foundation of the estimating process is one that I've been using for over a decade, and is the only sane basis, in my opinion, for establishing estimating relationships between what the project is supposed to produce, and what it takes to produce it.

I'm continually surprised by the large number of project managers, including PMPs, who don't use deliverables-based WBS. I'm not surprised, however, by the wide disparity between estimates and actuals when this method is not used. For this reason alone the book is invaluable, but there is even more that makes this book essential to any project manager. For example, the resource breakdown structure approach (also known as the organizational breakdown structure), and how it relates to the WBS is not only essential to accurate project planning and estimating, but is also an integral part of earned value project management (now a part of the PMI PMBOK). I especially liked the chapter on estimating models, which will provide project managers with proven tools and techniques, and the chapter on external projects.

Overall, this book should be on the desk of every project manager during the planning and estimating phase, and carefully followed. I also recommend using this book with Earned Value Project Management, 2nd Edition by Quentin W. Fleming and Joel M. Koppelman.

3 out of 5 stars More common sense than anything.......2007-07-06

This book is a quick read and is a nice break from all the people who proclaim clipping coupons is the way to save money. However, if you already buy a lot of private label/store brand products, plan your weeks meals after you check the sale flyers and buy in bulk when things are on sale, there's not a whole lot more in this book.

She does go into some detail about marketing strategies which is somewhat interesting, but if you are already budget minded, don't think this book can help you slice your grocery bill by a third, maybe 10-15% (which is nothing to sneeze at). Basically, I checked this book out of my library and I think you should too.

        4 out of 5 stars great tips.......2007-04-01

I was pleased with some of the insight and tips that i was able to get from this book. I have used some of the suggestions and have saved money.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Keeper!.......2007-02-07

I have read many books on how to go grocery shopping. Many of them say the same thing over and over again... but Barabara Salsbury offers a fresh perspective. I love how she talks about the secerets of advertising and how they try to lure you in. I love how she tells us to give up on cupons (they never worked for me anyways). I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants to save money on grocery shopping.

4 out of 5 stars A solid book that takes things a little too far.......2006-10-28

This is definitely a book about squeezing the last penny out of your dollar. It is far beyond the typical "clip coupons" and "buy what you can in bulk" mentality. The author actually advises against most coupon shopping (buy the store brands when you can, they are cheaper than discounted national brands in many/most cases). I can honestly say I am a pretty good bargain shopper, but I got my money's worth in reading this book. There is a lot of information in this book that is obvious after reading about it, but not as obvious before it is pointed out.

On the other hand, I thought the book went a little beyond what I would be willing to do. I'm all for stocking my kitchen so that I don't have to purchase items until they are on sale/priced to my liking, but building shelves and hiding them behind curtains in a baby's room or artifically raising the bed to fit more food under it seem extreme.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a tips and tricks book.......2006-06-07

Barbara Salsbury packs her book with a lot of useful information. She doesn't write about how to choose the freshest produce or the best time of day to shop. She deals with subjects such as in-store psychology (ie: why we buy when we didn't plan to buy); how to properly read the ads; eye opening information about store games, gimmicks and surveys; menu planning the non-traditional, but easy, way; the expensive lure of one stop shopping; plus many more subjects tying it all together with what she calls her "Pantry Principle."

I've been a grocery shopper for a long time and though I was doing a fairly good job at stretching my grocery budget, Barbara made me realize how much more I could do. She is quick to point out there is no villian here, grocery stores are a business and they are doing it well. Our job as consumers are to become "Super Shoppers" knowing how to stretch our hard earned dollars the farthest.

Her chapters on Brands is amazing! We all know major brand names, but what about house brands? Private labels? Economy brands? No names? When I would look at the grocery shelf and see eight brands of canned peas, I didn't really know the difference between them, now I do because Barbara explains it.

Barbara knows her stuff because she had to live it. In reading about her life, during a short period of time, her family experienced job loss, major hospital bills, their house being robbed, and because of a land fraud situation, didn't even own their home. She HAD to live these principles.

You may already do or know some of things in this book. But it was well worth the money to me as it is chock full of great information, even if it just gives you a different way to look at something almost all of us have to....grocery shop.

The quality of the material and printing was less than I expected for a pricey booklet. The information is basic and does not really provide a clear and concise spectrum of the Cost Management process
