In addition to providing updated materials in this rapidly developing field, the Seventh Edition emphasizes the major concepts essential to the practice of environmental chemistry at the beginning of the new millennium.
Customer Reviews:
Un excellent book.......2007-05-30
Environmental Chemistry contains the essentiel concepts to the practice
and the understanding of industrial ecology and green chemistry. The
structure of the book is very clear. It is a greate pleasure to reed it.
Good Reference Text; Poor Class Text.......2000-06-20
I used this text a few years ago when I was writing a paper on ethics of pesticide use, and it certainly details information well. However, the general tone is often anal and the writing style is extremely drab. Most of the diagrams included were generated using low-budget graphics software, and it shows. At 811 pages, this is an overly long book and not all the chapters (24 total) can be covered in a single Echem course. Also, there is no solutions manual and the problems Manahan gives are challening (a section of numerical solutions placed in the back of the text would have been nice...) This is a good reference text, but if you're looking for a semester-long or short-term text to use for an Echem course, use Baird's text, not Manahan's.
Environmental Chemisty Review.......2000-05-12
This text is well written. The author give a understanding of Environmental Chemistry. The reader gets a good understanding of basic chemistry as well as a understanding of the effects of Chemistry on the environment.
Text is good in introduction of topics, poor for advanced.......1999-06-26
Text gives good introduction to concepts only and not good for advanced studies because not explain how to apply the concepts to real world problems. It lacks in calculations needed to sovle problems and has no solution guide for the questions that are in the text. A lot of reference texts will be needed to solve the problems. No periodic table found in the text or conversion chart in the text which is very poor for a chemistry text. But it is an excellent text for learning the concepts of environmental chemistry.
An excellent introduction to modern topics in e-chem........1999-06-20
Manahan compiles many sources of information into one, easy to follow and compact reference. The only limitation of the text is the absence of sample calculations for solving the problems that come at the end of each chapter. Reference to a solutions guide would be helpful.

From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-10
This book is an excellent reference on Chemical Engineering Principles and Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.
I have found this book to be an ideal self-study guide. In this Edition the authors have included several categories of problems sets to assist in self-study. Self-assessment tests with answers (in Appendix A) follow each section, and thought and discussion problems follow the self-assessment tests.
If a non Chemical Engineer can learn Chemical Engineering Principles from this book, I guarantee that any Chemical Engineering student or practitioner will find this readable textbook very useful.
Chemical/Process Engineer.......2006-06-30
This book is well worth the money. I was very impressed by the examples and excellent explanations. Highly recommend this book to any chemical or process engineer
A winner text!.......2004-07-29
This book is a classic . With all my respects to the next authors , this book belongs from its initial release to a selected dinasty of works made with an unusual passion style , and that invisible factor seems to make the clear difference . The presentation , the precise comments and the appraoch given to every chapter where the essential concepts of Mass balance or Energy balance are so brilliantly shown that it is literally impossible for you not to win with this .
And after you bought it you will wonder in silent voice of course ( Do we need a teacher for Chemical Engineering Principles? ) .
If you acquire this one and then the Whitwell and Tonner (see my review) , How can you lose ?
Fundamental for Chemical , Production and Industrial Engineering.
solving simultaneou material and energy balance.......2003-09-30
When coal is distilled by heating without contact with air, a wide variety of solid, liquid, and gadeous products of commercial importance is produced, as well as some significant air pollutants. The nature and amounts of the products produced depend on the temperature used in the decomposition and the type of coal. At low temperatures(400 to 750 Centigrade)the yield of synthesis gas is small relative to the yield of liquid products, whereas at high temperatures (above 900 Centigrade) the reverse is true. For the typical process flowsheet, shown in Figure P6.23:
(a)How many tons of the various products are being produced?
(b)Make an energy balance around the primary dislillation tower and benzol tower.
(c)How much (in pounds) of 40% NaOH solution is used per day for the purification of phenol?
(d)How much 50% Sulfuric acid is used per day in the pyridine purification?
(e)What weight of Sodium Sulfate is produced per day by the plant?
(f)How many cubic feet of gas per day are produced? What percent of the gas (volume)is needed for the ovens?
A fantastic book.......2000-06-19
Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering is an excellent text book. The First Chapter explains essential definitions and informations that we need before studying Chemical Engineering. This Chapter also explains English unit system. In overall, the book in very useful for teaching Chemical Engineering undergraduate students. It helps the lecturers how to teach and the students how to learn material and energy balance which in essential to know for all chemical engineers. The only problem with this book is the English units which are not currently used very often. If the author could change the English units to SI units, it would be great.

Customer Reviews:
Chemical engineering student.......2007-01-21
I used this book for 3 quarters of general chemistry. Its an ok book, as I use it quite alot for my organic chemistry lab work. My school bookstore ordered the paperback "custom" version of this book, which I think is retarded because most chemistry / chemical engineering students are going to want to keep their chemistry books for future class and or job reference. A paper back just isnt going to cut it, and I am going to have to repurchase this book as a hard back. That fact that I plan to repurchase this book as opposed to finding another is proof enough of its value. As a second choice, I think the Brown / Lemay chemistry book is just as good of a choice.
Info's There, But it's Soulless, Rootless & Mathless.......2007-01-12
I took a couple of courses in Chemistry 30 years ago back in high school and then a couple more in college. My son just finished using this book in HIS college Chemistry classes and I thought I'd read through it for grins. I wasn't very impressed. Oh, the information's all there. But, it's presented in the manner of someone having gone through a checklist to see all the Chemistry subjects that should be taught in general Chemistry and then just including them. It's hard to explain, but I think the problem is the lack of historical background in the book. The book has little historical snippets on Chemistry *personages*, but it doesn't follow along the historical *path of discovery* to explain WHY Chemistry is what it is. The end result is that the student is presented with dry, bare facts with no place to hang them in his head.
Another problem is the lack of math in the book. I mean, general Chemistry is not exactly a higher math subject (it's an empirical science, instead). But, as an example, on page 277, in the midst of the Quantum Mechanics section, there's a sidebar explaining:
"The
<= sign means that the product (DELTA)x(DELTA)p can be greater than or equal to h/4(PI), but it can never be smaller than h/4(PI)"
(I've substituted the capitalized words for the greek symbols). 277 pages into a Chemistry book and the author is explaining what the "
<=" sign is. This assumption of utter mathematical ignorance on the part of the reader continues throughout the book. And yet, a mere 72 pages further on (page 349), the author assumes knowledge of Coulomb's law in an explanation. Coulomb's law implies a class in Physics which means that anyone reading this book should be well versed in basic math.
And, finally, the biggest problem is that there's almost no lab material presented or used. I don't mean just a lack of lab experiments (I initially assumed there was some companion lab manual for this book -- but, if so, there's nothing anywhere in the book that references it). I mean that the author uses almost no hypothetical, lab-based scenarios to illustrate his points. Again, Chemistry is an historically empirical, experimental science. To entirely ignore that in a Chemistry book makes no sense at all.
Personally, this book feels like a book designed for people who have no interest in Chemistry but are forced to take a Chemistry class because of silly academic requirements. The problem with this is that presenting Chemistry as merely a collection of boring facts makes it even harder for such students to get anything out of the subject. And, for anyone who really is interested in the subject, this book could scare them off. Because of this, the best I can rate Chang's "Chemistry" is a Not Very Good 2 stars out of 5.
Finally, Someone Knows How to Explain Chemistry!.......2006-08-03
I thought my brain was broken because I tried several times to understand Chemistry. The problem was the other textbooks required by my professors. When I came across Chang's book, I thought it would be written like the rest of the boring chemistry texts written for people starting out in chemistry (but seemed like they were for people with a Ph.D. in chemistry). After I started to read Chang's book I was surprised, but I doubted myself. I assumed that I would get concepts mixed up or that I did not understand them at all. I was wrong because I passed every test in my Chemistry class. I am so happy to have found this book. I recommend this book to every college student that is somewhat familar with chemistry. This book helped me pass! Now, it would be great if he wrote organic chemistry and biochemistry books also.
Worthless.......2005-10-01
Chemistry is the black science; it came to humanity borne upon the river Hades. In other words, I am an unrepentant chemistry hater. That being said, I nevertheless require a good grade in the subject in order to advance to the next stage of my studies in a field completely unrelated to chemistry (sound familiar my friends? and isn't it time we did something about it?). This text is bottomlessly horrible, plain and simple; its educational value dissipates as quickly as a stream of intestinal gas directed against the wind. There were times during which I fell down on both knees and begged God for deliverance (prior to chemistry, I was an agnostic) from the burden of another day in chemistry class with this hated tome around my neck like a millstone. In short: I've seen a wealth of better textbooks on the market since my sad days in chem 120, and I would encourage you to search for them.

Good Transaction, Thank you.
Best current review of neurochemistry.......2006-11-07
For anyone interested in neuroscience, it is a must read. Basic Neuroscience gives a snapshot of where neuroscientists are currently doing research, including the edge of what is known and not known. Much of this knowledge has only been discovered in the last few years.
A book to get if you need a good understanding of neurochem.......2001-09-19
This book is ideal for both undergrad and grad students in the fields of neuroscience, pharmacology, and psychology. The information is arranged neatly with the authors introducing concepts at the cellular level (anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry), then moving on to intercellular signaling. From here, the neurochemical factors are introduced, outlining their functional significance at the molecular level. The last few chapters of this book expands on the role of several neurochemical interactions in the context of diseases like Alzheimer's and Creutzfeld-Jakob (Mad cow-like disorder), Huntington's (and other related basal ganglia disorders), and several Psychiatric disorders (anxiety, mood disorders, addiction, etc). The figures are excellent, and succintly explained. Several color plates are also included. Note that the book I bought has textual addenda/errata located at the back, in order to correct factual/typographical errors. Nevertheless, these corrections don't affect the whole integrity of the contents, but rather they strengthened it.
This book also includes a CD-ROM which constitutes the book's contents, and provides nice figures that you can use as a reference. Overall, I recommend this book if you think you will embark on a career in the medical sciences, or if you are an undergrad that would like to go to grad schools.
Alcohol and the chemistry of human memory.......2001-03-11
Some fresh angles on the memory problem can be pieced together from distinct bits and pieces included in this book on the brain's catabolic habits, on starvation and diabetes, and on the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the chemistry of the brain.
Alcoholism offers us clues to how the memory works and fails. In both chronic and acute alcoholism, it appears the pen of memory stops writing quite suddenly. In the extreme chronic condition, an alcoholic who has progressed to Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome can be trapped forever in a particular day - the day the pen of memory lifted.
For a few fortunate alcoholics the brain's working memory can be restored with early injections of Vitamin B1, which is thiamine. Thiamine is a very common co-factor. It operates in a great many different biochemical pathways. But look: One among those many pathways is quite possibly the biochemical pathway that is essential for -- and could thus lead us straight to -- the human memory machine. The grand prize. This helpful hint has never been followed up exhaustively, although there are lots of takes on what might be going on.
This book holds a second hint. Perhaps the same crucial biochemical pathway to memory can be interrupted at a different point, in a different way -temporarily -- in the brain of a drinker experiencing an acute alcoholic memory blackout. See pages 659-660 for a summary discussion of ethanol, glucose and ketone body catabolism in the brain.
Notice sometime, in the spirit of science, the horrible, noxious, acetone like odor on the breath of a heavy drinker. It is very evident on the morning after. Ketone bodies are still so plentiful in the blood that an observer can smell them, and the brain (perhaps thinking the body is starving) may have shifted gears to protect itself. Instead of glucose, which the brain almost invariably prefers to eat, the brain can in a starvation emergency burn ketone bodies instead. Whenever they turn up, as for example on the occasion of a drinking binge, the brain will sense an emergency and make the changeover from glucose passively and automatically. So perhaps this emergency shift away from glucose is another pointer to the biochemical pathway that leads to human memory.
Maybe sugar synthesis, via the phosphogluconate shunt, is an important part of the memory pathway. It we are talking about ribose synthesis, which is certainly one possibility, this would imply an interruption or a shift, within the programmable phosphogluconate shunt, to the production of sugars other than ribose. Downstream, the pinch on ribose production would also constrain the synthesis of nucleotides and nucleic acids. It is an in interesting possibility because some people are examining anew the long despised notion that nucleic acids might constitute a human memory store. See Steven Rose's The Making of Memory for this longshot idea.
The basic notion is that to make a memory machine, you could simply run the equations describing the Central Dogma in reverse. (The first step, from Protein back to RNA, is thought to be impossible. However, the cell essentially takes notes on its protein manufacturing activity, leaving behind discarded introns like a dressmaker leaving shards of cloth on the floor. From the cutout cloth, you can determine the pattern of the dress. An intron uniquely marks a gene, and an intron can be written all the way back to DNA. A sequence of introns, or some sort of intronic shorthand, would essentially tape record a sequence of protein synthesis - a program.)
Another possible memory storage medium is a sprigged together sugar or glycoprotein molecule, perhaps assembled in the manner of a ganglioside.
There are lots of other avenues of action for ethanol upon memory. For examples, Ethanol is directly toxic to the nerves of the hippocampus, it affects LTP there and it also bombs the daylights out of the liver, suggesting that alcoholic memory loss is not a biochemistry problem to be pursued in the brain alone. If you are interested in the memory problem, Basic Neurochemistry is a major resource and great hunting ground for fresh ideas.
As with any other text in neuroscience, you should first read Spikes (Rieke et al. 1996) as an essential preface. It will help you parse out which assumptions in this science can still be believed, post 1993, and which assumptions should now be sharply questioned or instantly discarded.
an excellent introductory reference book in Neurochemistry.......2000-06-22
The topics in the book are arranged well. It is suitable for both junior and senior students. The concepts are explained clearly. This must be the most excellent book in this field for introductory courses.

Great author, but watch for errors..........2005-08-11
This author writes on this subject in an informative and unbiased way. I am a nursing student and this kind of knowledge is essential. Especially since I will probably end up working in an Emergency Department or as a Psych Nurse. I could only give it 3+ stars. I couldnt give it 4 or 5 stars as I did find some technical errors. Also some of the information presented does not clarify somethings, which could lead someone to a misconception. But all in all this is a book I would recommend to students of health professions.

Book Description
The seventh edition of this classic reference work once more provides a comprehensive overview of commercially available plastics materials. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, it enables scientists to understand the commercial implications of their work as well as providing technologists with a theoretical background.
Since the previous edition, several new materials have been announced. Many of these materials result from metallocene catalyst technology. In addition, developments also continue with condensation polymers with several new polyester type materials of interest for bottle-blowing and/or degradable plastics. New phenolic-type resins have also been announced. As with previous editions, an explanation of the properties of these new materials in terms of their structure and morphology involving the principles laid down in the earlier chapters is presented.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Student's Solutions Manual for Physical Chemistry, Seventh Edition.......2005-10-13
The Student's Solutions Manual for Physical Chemistry, Seventh Edition is very helpful and provides enough information in their problem solving to understand the basis of the chapters and the problems.
LifeSAVER.......2005-09-30
This manual is a life saver. I have an instructer that teaches theory more than practical applications. He is a great guy but I have to see how things actually work before I can understand why they work the way they do. This manual helps me to solve the problems in each chapter and at the same time I can understand the instructor.
Better than nothing!.......2004-07-21
It is just what it is supposed to be...and it's better than nothing.
