Customer Reviews:
People can make a difference.......2006-11-26
I enjoyed reading this book because it helped me understand how regular people like me can make a difference in the world. Even small acts of giving will accumulate and improve the way things are. There are so many suggestions in the book that if everyone took just one, we'd see the difference. Sometimes I think you have to be a saint or a celebrity to influence people, but here's proof that anyone can make a positive contribution.
Inspirational and Practical.......2006-11-25
I was given Be the Change! as a gift and put it next to my bed. I picked it up one night and couldn't put it down.
It is a great collection of inspiring stories, tales and practical tips about how focusing on the well being of others can change your life for the better. It immediately struck a powerful cord with me.
When I put the book down I felt like I had a game plan for my own service; and inspiration to know that I too could be the change. Bravo to the team that put this book together!
Inspirational!.......2006-11-22
This book is a refreshing reminder that there is good in the world and that each individual has the power to make a difference. It is nice to pick up the book and read a few stories when you need an extra lift in your day.
An Inspiring Must-Read!! .......2006-11-22
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who has an interest in community service, or needs an inspirational push to get into the giving spirit during this holiday season. People from all walks of life share their stories and personal perspective on what it means to them to volunteer, and how their good deeds have made a positive difference - in their own lives as well as in the world around them. And, you don't have to read it from cover to cover in one sitting...pick it up each day for a daily dose of inspiration! A great gift to share with friends and loved ones.
Groceries -- that's my bag.......2006-11-12
Reviewer: A. Whipple, Oregon
The book's title tells it all. Well, most of it: Remember the 15 minutes of fame accorded to transcendental meditation, a solution to the world's problems which, according to a Scientific American article, was simple, took just 20 minutes a day and a one-time investment of around $250? "Be The Change!" would serve as a fine title for any of the dozens of TM-offshoot titles; the technique - as well as the design and packaging - have all been updated, and arguably for the better.
The new mantra? Community volunteerism. "Before my husband passed away...I missed the feeling that someone needed me," begins an eight-line testimonial in a chapter called "Sparks that ignite the spirit." You could finish the paragraph yourself: "One night I saw a news piece about...bagging groceries for AIDS patients...and a light went on. I've been volunteering there ever since."
Skeptical? Just close your eyes, sit comfortably, and let the title fill your head.

Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19
This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.
It Really Works!.......2007-08-08
Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.
The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!
The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12
Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.
Excellent read!!.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!
The missing link!.......2006-09-19
Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.
One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.

Changing the way you look at work.......2001-12-29
Barbara Glantz has written a life altering book--at least a life at the workplace altering book. It is easy to read and filled with hundreds of big and little things that can change the way you spend 40 hours a week. Very positive, super ideas.
There are better books on the topic..........2001-01-07
This book is just okay. There are a lot of examples of how to improve morale at work, but the writing isn't that great, and the book isn't very well organized. There are much better books on the topic...try Managing to Have Fun by Matt Weinstein or 1001 Ways to Energize Employees by Bob Nelson.
Book Description
One of the pioneers of the Total Quality movement, W. Edwards Deming, famously proclaimed, "Drive out fear so that everyone may work more effectively for the company." But after attending a quality conference in the 1990s devoted to Deming's proposition, the authors felt somehow drained; talking about fear seemed to have sucked the life out of the entire audience. They began to wonder if it was a vicious circle; what if focusing on fear, even in an effort to drive it out, actually kept you in fear? What if the conversation were shifted to hope--not to negate or invalidate fear but to bring energy to the more life-enhancing side of the equation? Putting Hope to Work is their response to these questions. Drawing upon their many years of research and management consulting, the authors present a pragmatic approach to identifying, supporting, and sustaining hope and channeling it toward productive ends to create more vibrant, creative, collaborative--and successful--workplaces. Integrating insights from fields as diverse as anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and biology, Hutson and Perry identify the five key principles of hope--possibility, agency, worth, openness, and connection--and demonstrate how they can be developed in any type of organization. Featuring dozens of in-depth examples and personal experiences from a wide variety of organizations, as well as tools for applying hope toward effective leadership, decision making, problem solving, and communication, the authors offer a multi-dimensional approach to leadership that is both inspiring and practical, tapping into a universal desire to produce work that is as meaningful as it is profitable.
Customer Reviews:
Effective Leadership.......2006-12-06
A practical guide which maps out an excellent strategy for any organization, business, or venture. In clear and engaging style the authors show how to improve one's personal relationship to work, family, and community. Intelligible on every page, this books works for those with time for a complete, sit-down reading and also for strap-hangers between subway stops. Here is deep thinking and personal experience applied with a spiritual attentiveness to true challenges. The reader is educated to think realistically about present problems, hard facts, and tough dilemmas in the rubric of uplifting hope. Hope is investigated as the best antidote to fear, and the authors avoid all of the swamps of New Age mushiness. Hope will put us on track. Bravo!
This book is invaluable.......2006-10-25
In a time when there are more "managers" (good or bad) than "leaders"; this book offers valuable insight into providing positive and realistic motivation for any organization. Any person who considering themself a leader should read this book and think about how various principles can be applied to their organization. This should be a "must-read"!
A Refreshing, Positive, Clearly Written Explanation on How To Motivate with Hope Instead of Fear!.......2006-08-17
In their book, Putting Hope to Work: Five Principles to Activate Your Organization's Most Powerful Resource, Harry Hutson and Barbara Perry identify, and help us understand the inspirational value of Hope in the work place. While often thought of in the realm of vague spirituality or wishy-washy Pollyannaism, the authors clearly demonstrate that Hope, and its value within thriving, achieving organizations is anything but wishy-washy!
Stating that the "Hopes of an organization are consolidated in a company's belief in what you're trying to accomplish," they show how Hope within an organization is inevitably linked to the company's mission and vision - and where there is no vision, the people perish. The importance then, of a company's vision cannot be overstated. It's not coincidence that there is such a lack of "hope-talk" in the modern work place accompanied by a tangible sense of hopelessness.
While traditional management theory focuses on "driving out fear," pioneering authors Hutson and Perry compel us to focus on Hope instead, to "bring energy to the more life-enhancing side of the equation, creating more vibrant, creative, collaborative and successful workplaces."
Hutson and Perry identify the five principles of Hope - Possibility, Agency, Worth, Openness and Connection - and define Hope as "an orientation to a positive future that engages our heads, hearts and hands." When these principles are present - and sustained - within an organization, individuals and their organizations succeed.
In presenting their five principles of Hope, Hutson and Perry highlight research proving the effectiveness of Hope within an organization and provide detailed examples of how to evaluate and improve your skills as a leader fostering Hope within your organization or team. You'll learn who "Hopeful" leaders are, what they do, and how they keep their own Hope alive in times of difficulty or stress.
While some management books present theory alone, Hutson and Perry provide clear, useable tools to create and sustain Hope within your organization. Relying on their many years of management consulting and research, they feature real-life examples from a variety of industries. Combined with the tangible results presented from companies with cultures of Hope, led by "Hopeful" leaders, Putting Hope to Work is an inspirational and practical guide to implementing the power of Hope within your organization or team.

Taking the Measure of Work; A Guide to Validated Scales for Organizational Research and Diagnosis

Book Description
What is a committed employee? Are employees who are committed better or worse off than employees who are uncommitted? What are the organizational advantages and disadvantages of having a committed workforce? Commitment in the Workplace provides an overview of academic and popular perspectives on what committed employees look like and how they become committed. The multiple faces of commitment are examined as are the links that have been established between the various forms of commitment and organizational behavior. In addition, questions concerning individual differences, organizational characteristics, and work experiences associated with commitment are explored. The book concludes with a discussion of what organizations can do to manage commitment effectively, including commitment under more difficult circumstances, such as merger/acquisition, downsizing, and relocation. One of the great strengths of the book is that it summarizes the key organizational commitment research in such a way that the research findings can be evaluated for both their scientific merit and their practical value. The primary audience for Commitment in the Workplace includes students in MBA and executive MBA programs, researchers, and students and practitioners in the fields of organizational behavior and industrial psychology.
Customer Reviews:
A résumé of more than 10 years of research........2000-12-23
For newcomers in the field, this is probably the best book available.
Clear, Straightforward........1999-11-25
This is the best book about commitment in the workplace so far as I am concerned. Readers may find the style of writing, contents and structure so clear and straightforward.
If you STILL recognise employees' commitment to their organisation is composed of only one dimension based upon "affection" or "identification", probably you're wrong. And if you find your coworkers and supervisors may seem committed to the organisation, their behaviours lead to various results, not simply determined as a good citizen's.
This book will give you a key to solve what we think about "complexed" commitment. Essential for MBA students, researchers and HR managers. Good work, in a word.
A Complete book about organizational commitment........1998-03-19
The book is a complete review and application of the Meyer e Allen three component conceptual model of organizational commitment. An indispensable book for organizational commitment research.
Customer Reviews:
Well, there really was no transaction........2005-09-22
She didn't have the book anymore, and so she couldn't sell it to me after all. She did get back to me about it very quickly, though, and was friendly about the whole thing, which, I guess, is nice.
excellent review of the scientific work motivation literatur.......2000-11-22
Pinder provides an excellent overview of major and minor psychological theories on work motivation. Popular theories, such as Maslow's need hierarchy, are covered as well as minor theories on which little research has been conducted yet. The book is definitely useful for Psychology and Organizational Behavior students, but it is pretty in depth and not application oriented enough to be all that valuable for managers and HR practicioners.
Book Description
Between the covers of this book are testimonies from Christian role models from the worlds of film, sports, and music. The stories are real and powerful, and are presented in a way that believers and seekers alike will find compelling.
Customer Reviews:
Review: How Do You Know He's Real?.......2007-06-14
In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.
Celebrities Share Their Christian Faith.......2007-05-31
The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.
Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27
(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.
Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Terrific Read!.......2006-05-18
I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!
The book of a lifetime!.......2006-04-18
This is a book that you will no doubt want to share with everyone you know! (I certainly am!) It was so hard to put the book down - but worth it - just to extend the time and joy of reading it! GREAT content! GREAT author! I can't wait to read the next books in the series!

Book Description
The work explores the management of emotion in organizations and the emotion management skills organizational actors need to possess in order to achieve organizational objectives while also acknowledging the subjective experiences of its members. The key strength of this text lies in its critical approach and labor-process orientation. It will appeal to students of organizational studies, gender studies, sociology and human resource management at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Book Description
Ronald Warren, Ph.D. has been conducting studies on personality and workplace effectiveness for nearly twenty years. He has discovered that it isn't job skills or job experience that get people jobs or help them keep their jobs, but personality. Warren discusses character and personality traits and how they can help or hinder one's professional success. By taking an assessment test that measures personality traits, readers learn to recognize and manage their behavioral weaknesses and play up their strengths. Many companies use assessments for pre-employment screening and corporate training, to evaluate personality style, emotional intelligence, and character using tests similar to the one in this book. Warren's expertise, gleaned from working with companies such as UPS and Walt Disney World Attractions will help readers become the people they want to be at work.
As Warren says in the book, "Acknowledging the need to change your behavior to become more effective is not an indictment of your character but a sign of character strength. Confronting your shortcomings is not only is the best way to overcome them, but it also allows you to better capitalize on your strengths. Understanding your personality opens up opportunities to make well-informed decisions about how to better manage your behavior to achieve what you want to achieve. That is what this book is all about."
Customer Reviews:
I really liked this book, but.......2004-04-02
1) Biggest plus with the book = The personal test was right on in comparison with feedback I've received from coworkers and management about my personality. Put a lot of credibility for me into this system.
2) Another big plus with the book = Action plan section on how to improve upon one's weak areas or "less desirable" areas
3) Biggest minus with the book = can't order it anywhere I've found.
4) Another minus is none of the onlines tests sites host the online version of the personality test.
Book was right on for me. The writing was easy to read and understand. Wish I could get my own personal copy vs. borrowing the library's copy.
Incorrect information.......2004-02-11
In discussing the "Big Five" the author states, "The conscientiousness dimension measures self-confidence, a sense of competence, discipline, and the enjoyment of challenging work." This is simply incorrect! Big Five assessments of conscientiousness do not measure self-confidence, competence or enjoyment of challenging work.
In addition, the author makes many other claims/statements without any references.
Practical Guide to Help People Change.......2002-11-11
There are three things I like about this book. First, the very notion that people can change their personalities. Second, the model Dr. Warren uses does not neatly clump people into one of a handful of types nor labels them in some overly-simplistic way. And, Finally, there are practical steps to making productive changes.
Having worked with thousands of people in variety of industries, there is no doubt in my mind that the Achievement Paradox is both real and befuddling. Too many people are blind to the very things that hallmarks of success, no matter what function, level or industry.
This book is both relevant and practical. The research is solid, but it is written for real people to use. The assessment using the web is a nice touch and being able to do a 360-degree assessment another one.
I recommend the book.
An Exceptional Guide to Discovering Career Satisfaction !!!.......2002-11-08
The title of this book, ACHIEVEMENT PARADOX, to me seemed very intriguing and after reading the first three chapters, completing the free online personality test and reading the next six chapters i was even more amazed at how accurate and individualized RON WARREN's personality assesment scale and profile type library was.
I have worked in the health care industry for the past ten years and recently reached a point in my career where i was feeling sort of,"burnt out and frustrated" an expression which most people who work in the health care field can identify with.I'm sure glad i read this book at the right time because it helped me to refocus my energies on my personality strengths, identify what my weaknesses were and to overcome some of my "personality hang ups".This book thought me how to deal with difficult work situations and find job satisfaction at a time when i thought this was impossible.
The author has created a very masterful and fun to read book with wonderful quotes, personal stories and great advice on discovering one's work personality style and that of your co-workers.This book teaches the reader step by step how to essentially become much more effective when communicating with others in your work as well as personal life.It truly is a unique self help guide that i would recommend to everyone especially employers, employees and the self-employed in order to create a much more effective, efficient and enjoyable work environment for people from just about every career background !!!

Book Description
In Not Just for the Money Professor Frey challenges traditional economic theory and argues that people do not act in expectation of monetary gain alone, nor do they work solely because they are paid. Furthermore, the author claims that higher monetary compensation as well as regulations crowd-out motivation in important circumstances. Offering higher pay may make people less committed to their work and may reduce their performance. They thus behave in exactly the opposite way the fundamental price-effect of economics predicts. The first part of the book considers the Crowding-Out Effect and the Motivational Spill-Over Effect. The second part explores a large number of applications to constitutional questions, various policy issues and the organization of firms. The final part discusses the substantial consequences for policy making and economic theory. This path breaking book is bound to create controversy and debate. It will appeal not only to economists but to a wide range of social scientists who want to go beyond the traditional assumption of economic man.
