Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management
ASIN: 0324232772 |
Book Description
Focusing on the lean supply chain from an operations perspective, this insightful book offers a thorough overview, covering the activities of all the companies involved in the flow of products, services, finances, and information - from the initial suppliers to the ultimate users. It provides candid discussions of managers' tasks and responsibilities and how they may be best accomplished through the use of such conceptual tools as lean thinking, theory of constraints, and the balanced scorecard. The book uniquely integrates the discussion of theory of constraints with the lean supply chain, illustrating how both champion the use of pull to create the flow of goods and services through the value chain while emphasizing that lean is indeed a growth strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-03-08
This book is concise in dealing with the basics and the advanced materials in the subject. Author's language is discernible even for those who are not familiar with this concept.
Crack the Bullwhip!.......2006-05-02
I am the Corporate Lean Champion for a global manufacturing company. I had heard of the bullwhip effect but did not thoroughly understand it before reading "the book" as I refer to it when recommending it to my Lean students. Streamlined helped me to put a plan together utilizing rate based planning, Lean variation reduction tools, and pull protocols to Crack the Bullwhip effect and drive it out of our organization!
Streamlined is a "must read" for any Lean practitioner, operations Leader, supply chain leader ot MBA student.
An Excellent Guide.......2006-01-08
I actually got the opportunity to study under Srini and can verify his expertise in this field. I picked up more than a few great ideas in this book that I hadn't seen in the many books I have read on the subject. I would recommend this book to students, managers, and specialist at all experience levels.
Excellent textbook for an advanced undergarduate course as well as MBA courses.......2005-06-28
I have adopted "streamlined" for an advanced topics in management course on lean supply chains. The challenge of finding a book that goes beyond the abstract concepts to more detailed and parctical steps for implementation has been greatly alleviated by "streamlined." Dr. Srinivasan provides the reader and the student in particular with a very well thought out and written text. My students' initial worries about the rigor and difficulty of the subject matter were quickly mitigated after reading the first few chapters.
The 14 principles provided me, the professor, an organizing framework for the delivery of the course, the assignments and the term project. The students and myself found "streamlined" to be very interesting, thought proviking, and useful.
This book is a must-read for any faculty member regardless of their discipline as the topics covered cut across all functional areas of business and provide a much-needed integrative approach.
Very thorough read.......2005-02-05
This book covers the concepts around supply chain optimization in depth. In our company we are using these techniques to improve the lead time in our global manufacturing supply chain.

Maximize your Returns.......2005-05-11
The book is eye opening. Many of the processes described can be applied to any business as a management philosophy. Managers must look for improvement or face stiff competition from those who don't.
Where is KANBAN.......2003-12-24
Lack of information, I didn't find what I was looking, how to calculate KANBAN.
An absolute farce of a review on Toyota.......1999-04-05
This book failed to capture the essence behind the workings of Toyota. Whether it was through poor research or a simple lack of understanding this book should be avoided at all costs.

Book Description
Based on his extensive experience Sandras reveals a complete procedure for successfully managing all of the challenges and possible obstacles in an actual implementation. Organizing the implementation team, developing a working Kanban system, restructuring the shop floor, creating efficient connections between suppliers and customers, measuring performance and integrating JIT with TQM are among the issues discussed.
Customer Reviews:
waste of money.......2005-08-24
Don't buy this book. The book doesn't have any new insights. I found the book very useless.
A great introduction to JIT world.......2000-08-02
This is a great introduction to JIT. It covers main issues as the core knowlodge of this technique as well as the implementation cornerstones. It's an easy to read way to get a handle on this planning and production control. It has also tried to get a compromise with MRP without forgeting currently popular topics as the link to suppliers and customers. As a plus, there are some chapters for problem solving using quality control techniques as storyboards which are actually useful in many others environments and areas.
The book is an excellent guide to JIT implementation........1999-05-25
Just-In-Time:Making It Happen can be an invaluable guide to implementing JIT principles in the manufacturing environment. Although it is not a cookbook, it does provide a comprehensive step-by-step to understanding and implementing a workable JIT process. Perhaps the most valuable contribution of the book is the way it demonstrates that JIT processes can coexist with MRP effectively. Sandras defines those functions that need to be incorporated in the MRP System to most effectively interface with and support JIT. However, he also describes how the MRP System can be manually augmented to allow their coexistence. But what I liked best was the practitioner's understanding of the problems facing the JIT implementer.
Good, mostly based on real life experiences.......1999-01-23
Gives a very good insight into JIT, making you aware of the zillion things manufacturing companies can (still!!) do to avoid waste. The book, however, does not prepare you for actual implementation. For that to happen, there is nothing to replace being an 'insider' in the manufacturing environment.

Book Description
Here at last is the first-ever encyclopedic picture book of JIT. With 218 pages of photos, drawings, and diagrams, this unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at actual production and assembly plants illustrates exactly how JIT looks and functions. It shows the way each area of a JIT plant is set up and provides hundreds of useful ideas you can implement, including:
- Multiprocess handling
- Cell technology manufacturing
- One-piece flow
- Quick changeovers
- Visual control systems
- Kanban and andon
If you've made the crucial decision to run production using JIT and want to show your employees what it's is all about--this book is a must. The photographs, from various Japanese production and assembly plants, provide vivid depictions of what work is like in a JIT environment. And the text, simple and easy to read, makes all the essentials crystal clear.
Truly, a picture is worth a thousand words. You won't find a more accessible or enjoyable introduction to JIT anywhere. It's obvious why this is already one of our most popular books.
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures and examples, no nonsense language.......2004-10-19
This is a very nice overview of lean, or "just in time" as this was referred to in 1988 when this book was published. There are many great "before and after" examples in the book that illustrate many lean principles. There are nice diagrams that show how the different lean tools fit together and support each other. Downsides to the book are that the pictures from Japan (with kanji character signs), which might turn off people in some American factories, and some terminology issues (what's commonly called "takt time" is referred to as "cycle time" in this book, which might cause confusion). I have dozens of lean books, but enjoy this book for the historical context (it's a very early lean book) and for the specific examples and lessons I can learn from in my plant's lean efforts.

Book Description
When describing kanban implementation most information resources merely reference it without explaining it in technical terms or providing implementation details. Authors James Vatalaro and Robert Taylor address the need for kanban implementation guidance in Implementing a Mixed Model Kanban System: The Lean Replenishment Technique for Pull Production.
Implementing a Mixed Model Kanban System is a comprehensive and in-depth guide to implementing a kanban within the value stream. Its plain-language approach provides step-by-step coverage and guidance of the implementation, metrics, and dynamics of an effective kanban system based on proven reliable methods honed through years of implementation experience within manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments. By focusing on a case study of a manufacturing company trying to create and maintain continuous flow in their value stream. Vatalaro and Taylor show the reader how to construct their own kanban process, from beginning to end.
This book carefully identifies and explains each of the components of a kanban system within the context of pull production. The authors' common sense approach makes this book an excellent "on the floor" resource for all levels of "lean learners."
In addition, a CD-ROM is included, containing the spreadsheets and forms discussed in the text.

Book Description
What is "Lean?" Whether referring to manufacturing operations or maintenance, lean is about doing more with less: less effort, less space, fewer defects, less throughput time, lower volume requirements, less capital for a given level of output, etc. The need to provide the customer more value with less waste is a necessity for any firm wanting to stay in business, especially in today's increasingly global market place. And this is what lean thinking is all about.
Lean Operations are difficult to sustain. More Lean Manufacturing Plant Transformations have been abandoned than have achieved true Lean Enterprise status.
There are solid and recurring reasons for both of these conditions. The most significant of these reasons is that production support processes have not been pre-positioned or refined adequately to assist the manufacturing plant in making the lean transformation. And the most significant of the support functions is the maintenance operation, which determines production line equipment reliability. Moving the maintenance operation well into its own lean transformation is a must-do prerequisite for successful manufacturing plant - or any process plant - Lean Transformations. This Handbook provides detailed, step-by-step, fully explained processes for each phase of Lean Maintenance implementation providing examples, checklists and methodologies of a quantity, detail and practicality that no previous publication has even approached. It is required reading, and a required reference, for every plant and facility that is planning, or even thinking of adopting "Lean" as their mode of operation.
* A continuous improvement strategy using new "lean" principles
* Eliminate wasteful practices from your manufacturing or chemical processes, increasing the profitability of your plant
* Save thousands of dollars a year on new equipment by keeping your existing equipment maintained using this revolutionary method
Download Description
Companies spend millions of dollars every year to replace broken-down or misused equipment, but they would rather maintain existing equipment so that it lasts longer. This kind of maintenance controls costs and improves overall profitability. If you can eliminate waste from your manufacturing process, you can control costs, lower your unit cost, and affect the bottom line. This is the guiding principle for the lean maintenance method.
Customer Reviews:
Improving Maintenance by the use of Lean Concepts.......2007-10-01
It's for those who are locking for direct information. Begin with some Lean historical facts, and goes direct to aplications and examples. I found it very usefull and easy to find the information I needed. I would recommend this book for engineers and technicians involved in improving eficience of maintenance activities.
a Lean approach to machinery maintenance processes.......2004-09-27
Provides the insight that as an organization leans its manufacturing processes, it must also address machinery maintenance processes or reliability suffers. It gives a good background on Lean Manufacturing and rationale for using a lean approach on maintenance processes, along with an excellent "how to" guide for implementing.
A Great "How To" Text.......2004-07-18
The book provided an interesting background and history. Once it got into the actual elements of Lean Maintenenance, the text was very comprehensive. It provided a step-by-step process for setting up a lean maintenance program -- a cook-book approach.
Should be very useful for plants thinking about instituting Lean Maintenance.
Missed the Lean point.......2004-07-02
Good maintenance book, but it missed the point on lean by a mile. If you just what some of the lean ideas, but not how they relate to maintenance it may be for you.

Clear examples of lean applications.......2006-11-14
Before reading this book I would recommend reading something to help you understand the lean philosophy (Lean Thinking or the Toyota Way for example). Once the philosophy is understood, this book will give you good examples on how to apply some of the ideas and tools from Lean into a real world situation and will help you get your imagination going on how to apply it to your specific situation. The book covers a broad range of industries, from small high volume assemblies to aircraft assembly.

Michel Baudin is a very credible and experienced lean consultant. This book is a very detailed and precise guide for setting up lean assembly lines, with topics covered ranging from line layout and setting, labor staffing, and materials/part presentation. I use this guidebook very often when working in a factory going through lean transformation efforts. In this book, you get very specific ideas and approaches, not high-level lean generalizations. Highly recommended and I look forward to the next book, "Lean Logistics."
Lean Assembly For Supplier Development.......2005-01-29
Lean Assembly has been a great reference book for our supplier development team. With the content scope maintained within assembly and testing, supplier improvement project team members often refer to the chapters pertaining to the issues at hand for proven lean direction and practical examples. The highly technical content is clearly communicated through a good mix of text, charts, illustrations and pictures from a diverse group of industries. Because of Mr. Baudin's undoubted experience in and knowledge of lean manufacturing, I look forward to similar publications by him to add to our toolbox.
