5 out of 5 stars If you do AD programming, you need this book!.......2007-08-13

This book is everything I was hoping it would be. I'm working on a project where I need to get computer accounts from AD (TENS of THOUSANDS of them) and move, delete, enable, disable and set account expiration dates. Everything I need to know is in this book. The AD paged search, useraccount properties, etc. Some of the routines I was able to use as-is (the VB versions from their web site download). These guys do a great job of explaining all the stuff I couldn't find anywhere else. Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars well done!.......2007-08-09

This book is great for anyone who does AD programming with .NET it covers everything from the basics to some pretty advanced stuff and even some undocumented stuff.. a must have for AD Programemrs!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-31

If you are or may be in the future, doing directory services programming then this book is a must have. It also suffices a quick reference as it has code sprinkled around so that you can get up to speed quickly.

If anything, it is sort of lacking on other LDAP directories. It does have the history of LDAP and does show where the differences are between AD and the others.

If your primary focus is other directories, this may not be the end all book for you, but should still suffice as a reference.

If AD is your main focus, buy this now, you won't be disappointed.

This is a very good book for[...] developers who wants to program against Active Directory. There are some good examples in this book that can be very handy. Other than examples in pieces, there is not a project or Web Site codes that a beginner could use.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Title.......2007-01-12

Anyone who wants to include access to the Active Directory / ADAM via the ADSI providers (LDAP, WinNT, IIS, etc) and are finding themselves lost or overwhelmed while sorting thru the .NET environment on their own, need this book. Regardless of your previous experience in scripting or programming with ADSI (including none), this title provides the information you need in a relatively compact manner that brings you up to speed and gets you working productively before you even finish.

The book starts off with a quick introduction to ADSI and the .NET framework: light on history, heavy on solidifying the readers understanding of how the .NET framework's Directory Services got where it is. The middle of the book concentrates on explaining the core set of objects needed to bind, read, write, search, etc., spending the right amount of time on each topic with clear language and to-the-point examples. You could actually put the book down at that point with a clear understanding and the ability to perform the needed tasks. The last section of the book takes your skills even further, starting with showing you how to extend the schema, work with security, and manage namespaces. With those sections complete comes complete walk-thrus on practical applications you can develop as well as sections on hints, tips and troubleshooting. Some potential VB readers may be put off by the fact that all the code examples are in C#. As the examples are typically short and dealing with objects, non C# developers shouldn't have any issue translating the code; if all else fails, the author has posted complete VB translations for download.

This title proves itself to be not only an efficient learning resource, but also serves as a reference for Directory Services that you will use again and again. The authors have created a book that truly aims at demystifying the process and demonstrating to the reader that the technology is not as convoluted as other ADSI books make it out to be. Even though at the time of this review there are few books dedicated to .NET Directory Services available, this is a must have and will continue to prove its value for quite some time.

2 out of 5 stars No tutorial.......2006-01-03

While this book is well written and provides an overview, it is important to note that there is absolutely no tutorial. If you are expecting an instructional section that is set up as a series of steps that progress through levels of difficulty and understanding that provide a working knowlege of the subject (as is implied by the word tutorial in the title)you will not find that in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice book.......2005-09-26

Excellent coverage - I learnt a lot and the examples are very good as well.

2 out of 5 stars Returned Book to store.......2005-08-04

As a software engineer moving from VC++ to .Net and C#, I did not see the value in this book. Yes, I wanted to understand the .Net environment, but the pertinent subject matter contained in this book was readily available in other books such as "Programming C#" by Jesse Liberty.

The first few chapters are OK, but the author drags on and subsequently put me to sleep. After covering the material that I was most interested in, he moves on to Web programming issues, which are not relevant to my work.

To be honest, I read the first few chapters, skimmed the next few, saw the web info, and returned the book. Maybe I did not give it a fair shot, but I did not see it being useful reference material to hang on to as I navigate thru the world of .Net and C#.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not enough depth.......2004-05-19

If you are going to get an overview of the major aspects of network programming in .NET, and maybe run a few simple examples to reinforce your knowledge, then this book is fine.

But if you write networking software for a living, then this book will be of little help.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2004-05-02

This book basically gives you the watered-down rehashed MSDN version of .NET socket and network programming. This is a 350 page book attempting to cover all aspects of this subject including remoting and the structure of the .NET libraries without getting into much detail in each one.

A mere 18 pages is devoted to server side socket programming, but even that is packed with so much fluff that a programmer winds up with too little information to implement an regular TCP socket server, much less an asynchronous one.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2003-11-05

Originally, I bought this book because it contained a brief introduction to .NET Remoting, which I needed a crash course in. I also got it because I have an interest in writing network protocols. I had previously dabbled in some sample .NET code that I had downloaded, but was lacking in a proper foundation for going forward.

The book is well structured - gradually introducing the network programming with incrementally more advanced subjects. The style of writing is simple and to the point. There are lots of examples, and complex subjects are explained well.

Chapter 2 introduces streams, with the best explanation of .NET streams that I have seen in my limited reading. Chapter 3 discusses the complex area of asynchronous operations, and threading. Chapter 4 deals with Serialization, and Chapter 5 with URIs.

Later chapters deal with the details of writing networking code, from RAW sockets, through to higher level APIs that let you write powerful code in only one or two lines.

Finally, there are some advanced chapters. Of these, I found the ones on security and scalability the most interesting.

If I had to give some criticism, it would be that the examples (always in both VB and C#) were very short snippets of code, with no broader context of larger examples. I would have found them easier to read if there was some larger example of which they formed part.

There are some better downloadable companion examples, written using Visual Studio .NET 2003. I would have appreciated it if they had gone to the small trouble of adding some project files for a few more IDEs.

Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming is a tutorial. It's meant for programmers who already know an object-oriented language and want to apply their knowledge in the standardized environment provided by the Microsoft .NET Framework. The book, written by Jeffrey Richter, a programmer and the .NET columnist at Microsoft's magazine for its developer community, takes a more or less language-agnostic approach to the run-time environment (though many illustrative examples are in C#). It aims to untangle the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and some of the Framework Class Library (FCL), and generally succeeds, particularly at the former. Richter shares his knowledge of the key classes you can instantiate in the CLR, and the kinds of operations you can perform on and with them.

You can read this book, or individual chapters, from beginning to end. You'll probably find it more helpful, though, if you read individual sections as you encounter problems or develop an interest in specific aspects of the CLR (ideal for those middle-of-the-night "I wonder how it does..." questions). Richter typically lets his code do most of the talking, and he'll often introduce a section with a prose summary of the CLR way of doing something (sometimes with a supplementary diagram) before unleashing a string of quick examples that illustrate variations on the theme. In an unusual and helpful tutorial move, he makes heavy use of the ILDASM utility to show what goes on at compile time. --David Wall

Topics covered: How the Microsoft .NET Framework--in other words, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and parts of the Framework Class Library (FCL)--runs Microsoft .NET applications, and how to write software for the framework. Shared assemblies, characteristics of CLR types (including their properties, methods, fields, and events), and object orientation all get ample coverage. There's particularly detailed information on text manipulation (including internationalization and localization), arrays, custom interfaces, and the managed environment (garbage collection) in the CLR environment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best general CLR book out there.......2006-04-04

This is the best book I could find on Common Language Runtime (CLR) programming concepts. Richter really goes into detail on garbage collection, boxing model, and other important "under the covers" topics/gotchas. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the CLR.

5 out of 5 stars What more could you want.......2006-03-24

If you are a beginner in .NET ( not to be confused with a beginner programmer ) this book is excellent. Unfortunately for me, I have been using .NET for several years. SO there we're only pieces here and there that I could use. But, he goes into extreme detail on every aspect for .NET. I love the book.

Its a must for at least a reference book. At the very least.

And by the way I dont do practice examples, I make my own. So if there are examples I have no idea if they work or not. And a books weight has nothing to do with some examples that the author thought up, while cashing his check!

Nick

5 out of 5 stars Best CLR/FCL Internals Coverage.......2006-03-13

If you want to understand fundamental topics like boxing, unboxing, or disposing better or understand what is really happening when an event gets raised, this is the best book you will find. Richter's knowledge is impeccable, and his writing style is clear. If an experienced developer wants to understand the inner-workings of the .NET framework, this is the first book he/she should read.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for .Net developer.......2006-01-16

Excellent book.Anybody who wants to understand the underlying concepts of .Net must read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book for Deep .NET Knowledge.......2005-10-25

This is not the kind of book where you will immediately be copying code and being instructed to follow basic instructions to achieve a task. Rather this is a deeply rich book on the internals of the .NET architecture. I consider it required reading for anyone serious about moving towards .NET Mastery. Is it completely comprehensive? No. There are areas missing. Are these areas covered extensively in books that are more 'follow the instructions' type, absolutely.

I would add Juval Lowy's new book (2nd edition) to this, and you will know more then most in my experience. For more book recommendations see my 'so you want to' list under 'Damon Carr'.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone wanting to learn Visual Basic.......2006-02-19

I'm an IT engineer and was wanting to get stronger in scripting and code writing and heard this book was pretty good. Many other Microsoft or other company books are extremely dry reading where this was great. Whether you're a computer person or not, it's easy to follow, well structured, and has some amusing jokes. Learning VB.Net was much easier than I thought.

1 out of 5 stars I'm an idiot... and this is garbage!.......2005-10-26

This is the worst book I have ever read. It' s like reading a book on how to use a light switch over and over again even though you've already done it 1000 times. Does that make sense? Either way, I'm drunk and this book sucked and I still can't program. What a waste. Good lord.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-09-10

I took a job without knowing any VB or Basic computer programming skills and this book helped me to understand and understand the programing language at a beginner level and propell me forward. Within four days I was creating my own VB program and had a good understanding as to how to get around the application and all it's power. I highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good Beginners book.......2004-06-17

If you have never programmed in VB than this is a great introduction to the VB and .NET. If you are a programmer, this is probably not the book you want. It is VERY VERY basic. There is no real life code examples.
Good for it's humor but not technical enough for a seasoned programmer.

4 out of 5 stars QBASIC to VB .NET in 60 Seconds (Well almost!).......2004-04-24

Highly recommended for us old school programmers stuck in time still developing for the COMMAND shell. Easy reading that quickly made it apparent to me that the transition to Windows application development wasn't going to be nearly as traumatic as I first thought. In my humble opinion this book is a valuable starting point to an inevitable journey for us dinosaurs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource for XML Editing.......2006-06-01

I have found "Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft VB.NET" an invaluable tool in XML editor development. It is quite detailed about accessing and manipulating XML data.

1 out of 5 stars More confusing.......2006-02-04

I was reading it as first book for most of the topics, It was total waste of time to read it.

Might help if you are already well expreinced with .NET but not for beginner

1 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written.......2005-09-07

Judging by the positive reviews, this book must have some merit but it is certainly not in the quality of its writing or its accuracy. Perhaps the editor was reassigned to Longhorn duties. Here are some examples of what you can expect in the first two chapters:

"A COM+ component exists in three states: exists and activated, exists and not activated, and nonexistent."

"The pool objects are not destroyed even after their release from the client application. COM+ retains the destroyed object in the pool for recycling..."

" If the value of the CanStop property is set to False, the SCM does not pass the Stop command to the service application."

It's main value to me is as a syllabus. You can use it to direct your search for better explanations on MSDN and, of course, everyone should have Troelsen's "C# and the .NET Platform" which is the best textbook I have read. Ever.

1 out of 5 stars If you find this book useful, don't take the exam yet........2005-04-12

It is at a very basic level. It can be useful for starting in XML webservices, but not enough for the exam.
Some information is outdated.
It has errors. So does the practice test.
Doesn't cover at least one topic which is in the practice test.
The practice test doesn't tell you what is considered the correct answer.
If you find this book useful, you're not yet prepared for the exam.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor.......2004-11-16

While some chapters are readable, others are very poor (remoting) and some examples just do not work.

Book Description

Most Web applications follow a simple "3F" pattern: fetch, format, and forward data to the browser. With this in-depth guide, developers can take their Web design and programming skills to the next level to build more complex Web pages, applications, and services. The book demonstrates the advanced data-access capabilities of ADO.NET and the powerful page-creation capabilities of ASP.NET, plus how to employ code reusability, pagelets, code-behind, server-side controls, and other time-saving techniques.

4 out of 5 stars For Advanced users.......2005-09-26

If you are looking for a beginners book, this is not for you. This is for intermediate to Advance level users. The text is explained very well - gives you a feeling that the author not only knows the subject but also knows how to teach it which is what you want in a book.

2 out of 5 stars Disjointed, Inarticulate, Incomplete.......2005-08-12

It's pretty clear that the author (Dino Esposito) knows the subject--he just can't seem to put it down on paper.

He has the habit of raising a question at the beginning of a paragraph, working his way around it for several semi-relevant sentences before finally saying what he means. It always left me thinking, "For Pete's sake, if that's what you wanted to say, then why didn't you just say it?" Or worse yet, he'll just meander off without ever really resolving the question at hand.

There are some good ideas in the book. In fact, it's really more of a loosely organized collection of things you can do with ASP.NET and ADO.NET. Unfortunately there are few concrete examples so you are going to need another book if you want more than an overview of developing .NET web apps. The book could more accurately be titled, "Some things you could do with ASP.NET and ADO.NET if you had a good book to work with". But this isn't it. Sigh.

And a little pet peeve for books from Microsoft Press: OK, you don't have to focus on non-MS technology, but geeze, don't pretend they don't exist. The chapter on "Interoperability" discussed *only* COM/ADO.

So, keep looking if you are really interested in "Building Web Solutions with APS.NET and ADO.NET."

4 out of 5 stars Warning-Expert book, No VB.NET code, all C#.......2004-02-12

This is not an intermediate book:

The author knows what he is talking about. Perhaps he made it overly complex, he goes in to great detail and some of it is overkill. I started reading it and I knew that I needed to get another book that simplifies some of the subjects and I would use this book when I need to get to the gritty details. I was rather disappointed that there was no Visual Basic .NET code. The author clearly is a C# expert. I may change my review once I read the whole book, I am sure I will appreciate his thoroughness once I have a grasp of ASP.NET.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves 6 stars !.......2004-02-09

In depth discussion on most important features of ADO.NET and ASP.NET. Buy it and enjoy it if you are a professional developer. Don't buy it if you don't know anything.
It's a shame to give this book less than 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good book for Intermediate to Advanced readers.......2004-01-07

This is quite a good book on real techniques to solve real problems. It's still going to be useful if you use for you're development third party controls and frameworks, you still will find valuable information inside. I wouldn't recommend it for the very beginner that wants a Learn-This-In-1-Hour book (and keep yourself in the ignorance :-)).

For anybody else with certain degree of familiarity with the .Net environment, the book is going to be extremely useful.

Book Description

With the spread of web-enabled desktop clients and web-server based applications, developers can no longer afford to treat security as an afterthought. It's one topic, in fact, that .NET forces you to address, since Microsoft has placed security-related features at the core of the .NET Framework. Yet, because a developer's carelessness or lack of experience can still allow a program to be used in an unintended way, Programming .NET Security shows you how the various tools will help you write secure applications. The book works as both a comprehensive tutorial and reference to security issues for .NET application development, and contains numerous practical examples in both the C# and VB.NET languages. With Programming .NET Security, you will learn to apply sound security principles to your application designs, and to understand the concepts of identity, authentication and authorization and how they apply to .NET security. This guide also teaches you to: If you program with ASP.NET will also learn how to apply security to your applications. And the book also shows you how to use the Windows Event Log Service to audit Windows security violations that may be a threat to your solution. Authors Adam Freeman and Allen Jones, early .NET adopters and long-time proponents of an "end-to-end" security model, based this book on their years of experience in applying security policies and developing products for NASDAQ, Sun Microsystems, Netscape, Microsoft, and others. With the .NET platform placing security at center stage, the better informed you are, the more secure your project will be.

5 out of 5 stars Suprising -- Great Book.......2007-01-21

When I first purchased this book, I was searching for material to shed light on the Win32 security model. After extracting what little information was available on the topic from this text, it made it's way to the book shelf.

Sometime later, I needed information on Code Access Security, and off the shelf it came. I later needed information on Assembly evidence, and down it came again. Next, was a need for .Net cryptographic and secure programing documentation -- it came down from the shelf and hasn't gone back again.

This is one of those books you need to live with for a time before you realize how great it is. I turn to it 2 or 3 times a week, and regularly carry it back and forth from the office. I've discovered embedded in it's pages are program perls, tips, and background information. It has become and invaluable refefence -- one I whole heartedly endorse.

5 out of 5 stars Great .NET Security Book.......2006-01-27

Programming .NET Security does a great job of breaking down the various aspects of security in a well thought-out manner. In particular, they spend 7 chapters explaining how the .NET Framework has been built to provide a secure infrastructure and how applications can take advantage of this environment to become secured. This book provides one of the best examples I have seen to date covering Code Access Security (CAS). The inclusion of topics on both ASP.NET and Enterprise Services security make this book wholesome for any developer.

To follow, there are an additional 6 chapters that are devoted to cryptography, including sections on providing your own symmetric and asymmetric encryption algorithms. I would highly recommend this book to any developer working in the .NET Framework, regardless of skill; you will take something away from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Don't think twice, just buy this book.......2005-08-07

One of the best book that I will strogly recommend for any one who wants to understand .NET security subject. I was grappling with CAS for some time and how hard I would try, still I could not explain code group, permission and evidence and how they are interlinked. Not only authors have done a tremendous job at explaining CAS but cryptography is yet another section they have done great justice to. The diagrams in this chapter very clearly explains the key concepts of cryptography. A great book that will not disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars Best .NET security book I've seen.......2003-12-08

While there is a lot of talk about .NET security, relatively little can be found in terms of documentation, which is one reason why this book is so refreshing. In addition to discussing some of the reasons behind certain security schemes, the theory is explained as well as the C# implementation. While there are some .NET specific security issues discussed (e.g. configuring worker processes), the section on cryptography should be required reading for everyone in the computer industry.

I get really excited about a book when it contains a lot of good information and I am able to actually use it to solve real-world problems. After reading this book, I was able to help solve a really tricky (and politically challenging) security issue quite quickly. If you have anything to do with your company's security systems or write any .NET code, I think this book deserves a place in your reference section. This is certainly the best book on .NET security I have read thus far.

4 out of 5 stars Required reading for .Net Programmers.......2003-09-30

Some books are not going to be easy or approachable, one must already be familiar with either the C# and or Visual Basic language (the easy part) and the .NET programming enviornment to attempt this book. The authors are quick to jump from a discussion of the issues to meta code and sample code, but that is a feature, not a bug to the book's intended audience of very sharp, (as opposed to very basic), well educated coders. I would like to have seen more of an effort to discuss testing, validation and assessment, but at just under 700 pages this is a focused work and a serious coverage of the hooks that make it possible to secure .NET. (Of course that is assuming the underlying function calls are not riddled with buffer overflows and the like. Blaster on a .NET scale is a pretty scary prospect.)

The bottom line, we are awash in bad code and the vulnerabilities that result are the fundamental reason there are so many exploits. When you consider that in the scale of a federated system it is not a pretty thought. Someday there will be building codes for software, but in the meantime, if you are a responsible citizen of this planet and you are involved in .Net development, buy your coders this book. Invest the time to be able to quiz them and do so. Make sure they understand the issues, especially with Chapters 18 and 19, ASP.NET and COM+.

4 out of 5 stars Visual Studio.Net All in One Desk Reference for Dummies.......2005-09-21

Very good, has lot's of practicle examples. A must have

2 out of 5 stars Visual Studio.net not for dummies.......2003-09-10

The title of this tome is very misleading. I was expecting to find a guide to ease me slowly into the nomenclature and conventions of this very powerful software suite, but what I found was an advanced tip guide for intermediate users already familiar with version 6.0. Being a dummy myself in this field, I was very disappointed with my somewhat large investment in this guide. Also, it is not written in the plain, folksy manner that defines the best of this series. There's $35 I'll never get back. Definitely not for beginners!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-05-23

Although usually I'm a big fan of the Dummies books, I was really disappointed by this one.

First of all it is not as "hands-on" as other Dummies books. For absolute beginners there is too much general theory (the kind of "I will explain something you don't know by something else that you don't know either"). On the other hand there is very little explanation on what exactly happens in the examples. Experienced programmers however will find this book not going deep enough. I guess the authors tried to satisfy all and ended up satisfying none.

Second point is that there are plenty of errors in the book...That's pretty frustrating if you want to get a program running, because you never know if it's YOU who made a mistake or if there is just another error in the book. I regret that I wasted so much time on this book, just to find again and again that there was an error in it.

Last point, which is crucial if you want to work with Visual Studio .NET on your own computer, and need to install everything on your own: there is little help on how to get the prerequisite software installed and running, like e.g. IIS (Internet Information Services) and Front Page Server Extensions. You will need them to work with Visual Studio .NET, and installation can be very tricky (actually I know of noone who got them running right away). So if the book doesn't cover these topics, it would at least have been helpful to add some resources where you can find help...

1 out of 5 stars .NET for Dummies should .NET BY Dummies.......2002-10-02

Tons of errors, some don't even pass the simple syntax test.

Example:
Page 708 -
str = "Update Employees set Department = "@DPT, & _
& "Description = @DSG where EmployeeID = @ID"

Notice the use of & _ & at the end of the first and start of the second lines. This is wrong but not terminal. The real problem is that you will get a syntax error after Department = "@

These lines should probably read:
str = "Update Employees set Department = @DPT, " & _
"Description = @DSG where EmployeeID = @ID"

Now this is not just one isolated problem, there are many many more and when I emailed them for some help I did not get a response.

This book will not just waste your money, it will waste an even more precious resourse -- Your time.

...

3 out of 5 stars Not a Visual Studio .NET book, it's a .Net language book.......2002-09-19

Well, I already have a number of .NET language books, I did not need any more. I enjoy the for dummies books because they start at the low level and work upwards from there. What I was looking for was a book that would tell me how to use Visual Studio.NET to it's maximum potential. Instead, I got 7 mini-books on how to program in each of the languages that Visual Studio offers. The title should be Programming in .NET for Dummies rather than using VS.NET in the title. I can write in any of those languages by using notepad, so this is a very misleading title.
However, I will not give this book an awful rating since it seems to be good at what it does say. Just be careful that you don't buy this thinking you're going to get a good reference on how to use Visual Studio - because this ain't it.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars An extremely poor text.......2005-08-29

REVIEW: While not completely atrocious, this volume is certainly not among my favorite IT books. To begin, it is written in very understandable english. However, this is misleading. Oftentimes, that simple english conceals details that are quite useful and downright necessary for the examples given. To quote page 178: "Write the code for the GetDocumentation method." Note that the book does not give you the complete code (unlike most tech books). All the reader gets is a screenshot of the VS.NET window.

Now, you might think that's not too bad. There's probably a CD or a website that you can download the source from, right? Wrong. The website listed on the back of the book and in the introduction is not a valid URL. I eventually tracked down the real publisher and downloaded the source code. Unfortunately, it's buggy and comes with a senseless installation application.

In essence, this book is a lot of flash and no substance. It doesn't clearly explain concepts nor does it adequately present the material. At times it acts as if the reader is already very experienced (not providing the full source) while at others it reads as if it were written for a CS 101 class (showing step by step which buttons to click to create a new app).

STRENGTHS: Very few and far between. The screenshots provided are useful for positioning of controls and overall appearance conformity. The book also does a decent job of introductory explanations such as "Introducing the .NET Initiative." Which, parenthetically you could also read for free about on Microsoft's site. These, however, do not outweight the glaring errors present though.

WEAKNESSES: Aside from the above complaints, a major issue that I had with the book is that it did not use standard Hungarian notation. Instead, the author used IDs such as "AdRotator1", "CalStart", "documentation", "picture", etc... Naming conventions like these simply scream "amateur" to me.

WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK: If you still want to read it, I'd recommend that you already be familiar with VB.NET or C#. Also, an understanding of web technologies such as IIS and SQL Server are quite useful when the author neglects to tell you important information.

FOR SIMILAR/RELATED TOPICS, CONSIDER: I would recommend "ASP.NET by Example" (ISBN 0789725622) or "Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days" (ISBN 0672324458). Both are far better.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2005-05-13

This is by far the worst computer book I have ever read. This book does not deliver on any level.

I am an experienced VB programmer new to ASP.NET. If you are a beginner, you will learn nothing from this book. If you are an experienced programmer but new to ASP.NET, again you will learn little from this book and will be forced to search elsewhere for your answers.

5 out of 5 stars Very easy to read, covers all the important details.......2004-06-22

Ignore the other reviewers, don't know what they're talking about.

I'm a professional programmer who selected this book because I was under a deadline for an ASP.NET project and knew nothing about ASP.NET. I bought Sams ASP.NET Unleashed (1200 pages) first, and found it really hard to decipher--as a beginner. For one thing, Walther prefers Web Matrix over Visual Studio, which I found utterly irritating (no VS.Net projects). Finding solutions in this book is a long-term prospect, and I'll admit it's got the details I'll need to learn eventually. But for getting up to speed quickly, this little gem of a book by Pandey does a great job.

The author succeeds with simple writing (short sentences that are easy to consume), while still covering "enough" of the technical details to get the job done. There were many things I wish he'd covered in more detail, like how to connect to IIS without FP Server Extensions, and how to debug an ASP.Net app (skips over that subject with barely a mention), but then again, a lot of these things are assumed to be set up already by an ops/lan/sa, so this book doesn't deal with config, which is okay. I don't mind that. If I'd had my system running IIS in the first place, I would have learned much more quickly. I highly recommend that you install IIS5 on your Win2k/XP box while learning, and not try to do remote development while learning.

I'm reading this book through a second time before passing it on to a junior member of the team, and will soon dive into the ASP.Net Unleashed book again. I thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciate Pandey's easy writing style. He speaks to you, rather than preaching AT you, and doesn't condescend...he explains stuff patiently and politely with no assumptions.

2 out of 5 stars Example won't work.......2003-02-12

Once I actually tried the examples, the first one I am trying doesn't work. Since I bought this book purely for the step by step examples, this pretty much makes it suspect as to having any value.

When I typed in the example lines as described on page 318 I get an error (Parser Error Message: Unrecognized configuration section 'Forms') when I try to run it. Since it is only two lines of text, and I have typed them in multiple times, I am at a loss. I went to the website to download the example files, thinking at least that should work, but it was it was zipped. So, I went to pkware.com and tried to download the viewer, but something was wrong with their link, and when I would get to the last page, it would say, "File not found." instead of downloading. Almost every other books examples are not zipped, I suppose someone thought they were being cute by zipping it, but I don't appreciate that either, since pkware is apparently having problems.

Anyway, I did have this book rated as a 3, but now that the first time I actually try an example and it doesn't work, I am changing my rating. If I try another one and it doesn't work either, then I will log back and lower it still further.

3 out of 5 stars Not a first choice for a reference library but useful.......2002-10-30

This book does fill a need. Many books do not tell you directly how to do something, or they "save space" by including such statements as "The following code is assumed to be at the top of each code example for the next nine chapters." Not bad, unless you are opening the book to the place where you need the example from, and miss the reference. This book shows you how to do some common and simple tasks, including screen snapshots, without having to dig back through hundreds of pages to catch the part that you missed.

So, for this simple reason, this book is worthwhile. It has easy to follow examples that tell "how to."

I have been fighting permissions in order to use MSDE for over a month now, and the MS Examples and directions on how to correct for the permission settings, (found three completely different sets, none of which work) and was hoping this book might address the issue. It does not. (The MS examples that do work on the help disk, will not open because "I" do not have the correct permissions on my own computer, so I cannot see how they did it.) I was hoping this book would address this, but it did not.

All and all, there is considerable evidence that the author shot through this book as quickly as possible. It took me over a month to read the book by Francesco Balena "Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET, (and I am still not quite done) and only a day to read through this book.

Still, it does have its place, and I would recommend that if you are just starting the transistion to VB.net and you have a good solid book or two for spending countless hours trying to figure stuff out, that this would be a good third book for just showing you how to do something. It can save a lot of hours sometimes.

For example, in Francesco's book, I wanted to run a code example from page twelve hundred and something. It is missing the imports statements, and I know that somewhere in the preceeding 1200 pages there is a phrase that tells me what I am missing. It is very frustrating, and this book is very refreshing in its simplistic approach to things. Easy.

So, you won't learn much from it, but if you are trying to do something that this book covers, I think it could be a handy resource that would keep you from otherwise going through hundreds of pages looking for dangling references, and "implicit" things that you are "supposed to know."

I would have given it four stars if the Database stuff had been better. It assumes that you have SQL Server 7.0 and then it goes into a snap-in to do things, for an entire chapter. Those of us trying to use MSDE or Access are still out in the cold on this book, though it does touch on it briefly for ODBC data binding. Overall all though, if you want a How to book that tells the database stuff, keep looking, the author took too many shortcuts, and there is still too much not covered on the topic, UNLESS you are using SQL Server 7.0

There are several useful chapters that I haven't seen covered anywhere else, such as some good detail on editing the web.config and form level and windows level authentication as well as tracing and caching. Also there is some useful stuff on how to setup a web service and finally there is also some useful stuff on object persistence.

If there hadn't been so many shortcuts taken on the database related stuff I would give this more stars, maybe even five, if I had rated it based on the niche it is trying to fill.

Anyway, lots of useful stuff, that is not found in other books, and presented in a way that is very easy to follow.
