Unless you like "Batman" styled comic book illuistrations and print so fine you would need at least a 10X magnifier to read the simulated pages with the information one would supposedly find in a Vista window don't order this book. It is the worst "How To" book I have ever seen and I have read many many books. Ruth P OConnor

Very informative. Good for new or experienced Office users. Recommend to help get started on Office 2007 as there are several updates in this edition. Handy to be able to refer to a book and it will walk you thru it step by step.

4 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons on Teach Yourself VISUALLY Microsoft Office 2007 .......2007-03-10

I found this book useful as a general overview guide to Teaching Myself VISUALLY Microsoft Office 2007. The book did not go into details in any of the sections, and it did not deal with some of the minor or advanced sections of the COMPLETE Office 2007 program, however, I do recommend it as a reasonable investment to get a quick handle on the program. It greatly helps in the transition from the old format of Office which we had from 1997 through 2003, into the new 'ribbon' format. I recommend it, but do not expect that it will answer ALL of your questions, or solve all of your change-over aches and pains. However, because I strongly believe that NOW is the time to change to a new Office system, this book is well worth the money. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Quick Overview for Professionals & Nice Reference for End Users .......2007-07-20

What the heck is Sharepoint? We bought this book to help us find out. I've liked many of the SAMS 24-hour and 21-day books, but this is the first 10-minute SAMS that I enjoyed. This book has a 2005 copyright and addresses Sharepoint 2003, the release prceding the current Sharepoint 2007. Since the book is an introduction, it serves well even if you envision a Sharepoint 2007 environment.

As we reengineered our IT resources at our small technology company to run on Microsoft Small Business Server, we almost discarded the built-in Sharepoint-based CompanyWeb intranet. Just in time, we (I and one other experienced administrator/developer) took a closer look by rapidly exploring CompanyWeb using the twenty-five, ten-minute lessons in this book. Wow, we realized we could do so much with Sharepoint to improve our intranet. We quickly invested in four thicker Sharepoint books, but this is the book we will give to end users who are looking for something beyond read-only access to the documents and lists.

We learned that Sharepoint quite simply is a Microsoft server technology with an impressive set of tools for creating, viewing, and editing intranets. (Call them "portals" if they are comprehensive and well designed.) Sharepoint works just fine too for public web sites but so far has been promoted by Microsoft largely as a way to share Office 2003 and Office 2007 documents.

Use of Sharepoint encourages and almost ensures best practices for not just sharing but also collaborating on documents, lists (including contacts), discussions, surveys, links, and many more intranet elements. A wide variety of templates are available from Microsoft and others. Each of these intranet elements is a Sharepoint Web Part. Web Parts are enhanced ASP.Net pages with integrated assemblies of controls. The assemblies have properties and methods that permit easy runtime modification of content, format, and views by end users - in almost the same manner as end users can edit, format, and view Word or Excel documents. Most Sharepoint documents and other items can be automatically maintained in SQL Server databases (with version control and checkout if you need them) so you can say goodbye to huge assortments of poorly organized folders that are typically found in intranets, and this improvement in content management greatly eases an intranet administrator's burden.

Of course developers can build their own web parts using the sophistication of Visual Studio and all the power of the .NET Framework.

An excellent step by step guide, and a good reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars SharePoint reference and starter.......2007-01-26

I found this book to be a godsend win I first started using SharePoint at work. It's small and easily tabbable. This book will get you off and running with SharePoint and how to use it. I recommend this book to all new personnel who come to my work. Great starter book.

5 out of 5 stars The quick 10 min reference.......2007-01-10

This little book is big on reference. It will not give you the most comprehensive detail that a full tech manual would give you but, it is after all a 10 min. guide. The quick references and how-to's get you up and running on using Sharepoint 2003. It is an easy read for all that would deal with Sharepoint. The instructions are easy to follow and not written in a high techie vocabulary so it can even be used in training users in the use of sharepoint with office.

4 out of 5 stars Useful SharePoint reference material.......2007-01-09

Have found the book useful in researching specific issues/procedures for my novice to intermediate use of SharePoint. Our company's internal training program recommended this book and I have found our utilization of the product is a close match to the material in the book which is a great bonus!

This book was excellent in showing the problem you might be having and showing you the answer, exactly the way it was scene as on the computer. I started with my computer in September, 2006 and have never been taught. This book has helped me in full detail. It is written in language you can understand as well as showing you in detail. It will be good for any age. Carol

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars full of errors, theory is pretty good though.......2006-08-20

Although to me some of the errors were obvious but for a beginner they might not be that obvious and you could get stuck with an error screen for hours and hours thinking YOU are wrong and the book is right, before finally discovering you need to adjust cause the book is just wrong.

they add four menu items for example, while in the image you see it are five. then in the code they work with five so you have to make the fifth one yourself and discover its name etc. Also they tell you to rename the buttons but in their code you can't follow anymore cause they didnt rename their own buttons.

This was just in chapter 1, the third day, which is the first real code writing lesson.

I can't understand why someone would give this book a five star rating. It's very confusing for a beginner with all the errors. But if you have a decent basis and you can easily discover the errors it might still be ok, but not highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars The difference between knowing, and being able to teach ..........2006-04-04

This might be the book for you, if:

- you need a crash course in VS.Net,
- you're pretty well-versed in Visual Basic 6.0
- you're pretty good at filtering out irrelevant praise for the product
- you are willing to skim through examples, getting the jist of things without actually trying to make them work
- you can't find a more carefully-written crash-course book covering the same ground

Then again, if you're that good to begin with, you can probably learn VS.Net without a crash-course book.

2 out of 5 stars Cannot recommend this book.......2006-02-20

Unfortunately, the code examples in this book are fraught with careless errors. What's the point of picking up a book to learn VS .Net if the code examples don't work? Moreover, the author's claim (p.3) of a website featuring code samples, fixes, and other helpful materials to supplement the book is simply untrue. That website (http://www.vbasp.net) exists, but has nothing uploaded. I wasted many hours trying to get code examples to work before learning through Amazon.com Reviews that others have had the same problem. How disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2005-08-31

As other reviewers have pointed out, this book has a lot of mistakes in it. How sloppy does an author/publisher have to be to put out a beginner's book where many of the examples don't work? It's a lot easier and more effective to learn this material by using the documentation that comes with Visual Studio.

1 out of 5 stars Regrettably, it sucks........2004-12-21

I did not read the reviews before I bought this book on a friend's recommendation. I made a big mistake. The critics are right on target. This book needs major editing before it will be an aid to anyone. And while I've marked mine up and cannot therefore recover my $30, maybe I can save you yours.

Maybe if sales of this book die as a result of the reviews these publishers will think twice before rushing out so flawed a product. They should truly be embarrassed.

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 2003 in 21 Days provides the grand tour of the software, making Visual Basic accessible and easy-to-use. Steve Holzner, the author, helps you master the topic by seeing Visual Basic in action from the basics to deploying finished Window and Web applications with a working example for every topic in the book. Download Description

Learn how to use Visual Basic .NET to create power Web and Windows applications! Completely new book written by well-known author Steve Holzner. Provides readers with incredible examples for easy, hands-on learning. Thorough coverage of the Visual Basic language, ASP.NET, Windows Forms, ADO.NET, graphics programming, and Visual Studio .NET. With over 1.3 million developers in North America and 4 million worldwide, Visual Basic is the most popular development tool on the market today. Though the transition from VB 6 to VB .NET has been slow since its release in late 2001, this revolutionary and powerful programming language is moving out of the "early adopter" stage and into general acceptance by the bulk of the developer audience. Teach Yourself VB .NET in 21 Days, 2/E is designed to be the new market leader, written to make VB .NET more accessible than ever before. Currently most books on the market approach VB .NET theoretically, with chapters like "Object Syntax Introduction," "Syntactical Types," and "Applying Objects and Assemblies." The approach for this book is from the practitioner's point of view -task-oriented, full of examples, and written in an easy-to-understand way. From Windows and Web forms to Windows and Web services, this book presents relevant and practical material for the everyday VB .NET coder. Visual Basic .NET is available as part of Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET suite of developer tools ($1,079 to $2,499) or as a standalone product ($109 before MS rebates). Steve Holzner is an award-winning author who has written 76 books on computing, including many bestsellers. Though he has written on many topics, Visual Basic is still his favorite subject. He has been a contributing editor for PC Magazine, as well as a faculty member at both MIT and Cornell University, where he received his PhD. Besides writing books, Steve teaches corporate seminars on programming topics around the country and owns his on Internet business.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2006-05-02

I teach an introductory programming class in college and will be looking for a more introductory book. Those things that are essential to programming, a class-worth of learning, are taught in ONE DAY of the 21 days. That one day became 1 1/2 month. I also think the order of the days could be better: Simple subjects should come sooner than more complex ones.

Now for you techies here is what I am saying: Control Structures such as if/then, loops, arrays, and such are taught in one chapter. Then functions and subroutines and classes in the next. If this is your speed, go for it!

In short this is for either experienced or enthusiastic programmers. Those programmers could finish a day in one whole 8 hour day. But if you are a beginner don't start here.

5 out of 5 stars The Abby Road of VB .NET 2003 Books.......2006-03-27

It's a good book, but yes as many have said its got lots of errors. Most computer books have lots of errors.

I wish the book would have a website with the solutions to end of chapter applications and other goodies, but it does not come with anything other than the source code for the book.

Anyway, I use this book for one of my classes: http://iws2.ccccd.edu/bbenavides/ITSE2349_Holzner/Advanced.htm

In the end, I would say its one of the best vb .net books I have read.

5 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to VB.NET out there...........2006-02-07

I have toyed around with Java and PHP and some Visual Basic 6. I knew the craze surrounding VB.NET was strong so I took up this book. One of the best purchases I've made, to be sure. It's simplified so you get your feet wet, and then goes on into more indepth topics. It's a bit lean on the DataView (sorting and filtering, etc) but other than that I applaud this Holzner. Great piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive.......2005-10-28

chapter on OOP is great for beginners.
most comprehensive vb.net book that i have read.
...and this is book #12 in my collection.

Teach Yourself Excel Programming with Visual Basic for Applications in 21 Days covers programming in Excel 95. The authors dedicate most of the book to a tutorial on Visual Basic and, as a result, you can apply the lessons to programming other Office applications. Harris begins with a discussion of how to create Excel macros, a simple task that even new Word users can perform. He then shows you how to look at the Visual Basic code that defines the Word macro and build more sophisticated Visual Basic programs.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the VB-ginner.......1999-07-07

Truthfully, I am not yet through the entire book yet. But this is a very well written book for someone that has a desire to learn VBA programming with Excel, or to eventually move into VB. Examples build on prior chapters to drive the message home. Every concept is explained two or three times making it slow to read, but thorough. Each chapter includes a summary, questions and exercises. Do your homework and you'll be getting that raise you deserve! And don't be discouraged that this book doesn't come with a CD. You'll need the practice typing code. However, if you already know what VB is and can make your way around the Editor, I suggest Reed Jacobson's Excel 2000 VBA Fundamentals. I bought that book at the same time and it is on the shelf waiting for me to catch up. I think it will be a great reference for real world examples later on.

I use(d) this book as the basis towards my WIN2K MCDBA...It is superior to anything out there including Microsoft's Official MCSE [Exam 70-228] SQL Server 2000 SA Training Kit... includes everything one needs assuming one immerses oneself in the book from Day 1 through Day 21 in addition to Day 22 (SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP)) and Day 23 (English Query). It is both a superior reference book and programmer's guide. After purchasing Microsoft's official references I found myself repeatedly (frustrated by their shortcomings and referring back to this particular SAMS text). Enough cannot be said about this book.

4 out of 5 stars I liked the book.......2005-06-22

The book was ok. It has taught me a lot. However, it is not without its easily seen errors.

1) Some concepts are not expounded on to make sure a newcomer or complete idiot thoroughly understands what is said. Some sentences can be so concise that it can cause you to take a word for granted (if you aren't paying extra attention) which could lead to complete confusion. thus, if there are no supporting sentences you can be completely lost. It also uses terms without explaining them or maybe expects you to know terms that a newcomer would not know. Some concepts are just not explained clearly period.

2) Some of the exercises use obsolete code. It is as if the person who wrote the chapter didn't write the exercise.

So if you need a book. Yes, buy this book. Hearing the negative comments can distract but at the same time only good comments can cause a person to wonder if something is wrong with him. The book DOES have errors! Point Blank! Some are very noticeable. Few are frustrating. My most frustrating experience so far has been chapter 5. I had to read ch 6 to understand 5 better. But you will learn a lot and the book's exercises do a good job in making sure you understand what was covered. My point is only that if something seems strange like the exercises on chapter 5 (also the exact same, word for word as exercises for ch 6, probably a mistake) it is probably the book and not you. The answers for chap 5 exercises are indeed obsolete (question 1 anyway).

Overall, the book makes learning this stuff very easy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Book.......2005-05-26

I have a LOT of access experience and wanted to move to SQL Server.
This is a great beginner book for those with a little knowledge of SQL and a lot of knowledge of relational databases.
Great chapters on SQL usage.
GET THIS BOOK!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent exam prep.......2005-05-22

I found this book excellent prep for the MCP exam (70-229). The discussions on deadlocks, indexing, transactions, and security (specifically, application roles and ownership chains) were definitely the difference in my passing the exam.

The authors do a very good job of explaining WHY you would want to do something, not just HOW.

The only negative thing for me was the frequent references to how things used to work in SQL 7.0, 6.5 and earlier.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book if you're the right audience.......2004-10-29

This is a very good book for the newcomer to SQL Server, particularly for those who have little experience with other databases.

It addresses various topics that are just enough to get you started on being able to get some work done with SQL Server and know what else you need to learn. Strange as it may sound, IMHO, discovering what you don't know is a valuable endeavour. Sure, it could've gone into a lot more detail on the query optimizer or how lock escalation really works, etc... but really, where do you draw the line? There's no good place that will please everyone. This book did a decent job.

This is not the book to make you an expert. In fact, it won't even make you an "intermediate" if there's such a state. It introduces enough to get you going. If you find yourself asking "well, what about this?" or "ok, you showed one way to use stored procedures, what if I wanted to ....", then the book has done a good job. If you have no questions or don't know what to ask, then it's failed.

As for the readers/reviewers who slammed the book for not making them experts, really, what were you expecting? You won't even know the ins and outs of installing Oracle or DB2 in 21 days much less get into any useful state (I've been an Oracle DBA for 7 years and DB2 for about 2 years, I know a thing or two about them).

If you are an experienced database administrator or developer on another database, this book is probably kinda slow for you and certainly will not contain the depth that you're probably seeking. For this audience, I'd recommend Inside SQL Server by Kalen Delaney. It's not all there but it's a great start.

Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 2000 Visually is a class act among super-basic introductory books about Word 2000. If you want to learn how to perform critical documentation tasks but lack experience with the new version of Word, this book will teach you job-critical usage of the software.

Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 2000 Visually details all of Word's major features. The author opens with the procedure for starting Word, typing text into a document, and then saving that document to disk. From there, she proceeds to cover text formatting (fonts, alignment, and the like), editing tools (including spelling and grammar checkers), and helpful features like search and replace. Readers learn how to insert tables and pictures into their documents and how to print them. The author also demonstrates the use and creation of simple time-saving macros.

The book utilizes graphics liberally, though they are rarely gratuitous. With a combination of screen shots and custom graphics, the full-color illustrations convey concepts as well as procedures. The author even marks up her screen shots heavily, so it's always clear which parts of Word her comments refer to. --David Wall
