Book Description

This book provides professionals with the necessary managerial, technical, and legal background to support investment decisions in security technology. It discusses security from the perspective of hackers (i.e., technology issues and defenses) and lawyers (i.e., legal issues and defenses). This cross-disciplinary book is designed to help users quickly become current on what has become a fundamental business issue. This book covers the entire range of best security practices—obtaining senior management commitment, defining information security goals and policies, transforming those goals into a strategy for monitoring intrusions and compliance, and understanding legal implications. Topics also include computer crime, electronic evidence, cyber terrorism, and computer forensics. For professionals in information systems, financial accounting, human resources, health care, legal policy, and law. Because neither technical nor legal expertise is necessary to understand the concepts and issues presented, this book can be required reading for everyone as part of an enterprise-wide computer security awareness program.

5 out of 5 stars Information Security in a Nutshell.......2004-03-31

This was a wonderfully concise, readable and intelligent book on the characterization and management of all the issues surrounding information security. Rather than focusing on the bits and bytes, this book identifies, explains and suggests how to go about managing issues related to Information Security.

There is a particularly good and unique discussion of the legal implications surrounding information security management/mis-management. This is an area that is increasingly important for everyone who touches a system with any kind of business information. Sometimes we don't always appreciate all of the implications associated with access to business information. Included are invaluable citations of related case law, statutes and legal precedents. After reading this book, I can't imagine not having read it! I will continue to encourage my management, colleagues and reports to read it for a compulsory grounding in the implications of the information that they are handling.

I found this book to be an invaluable companion volume for preparation for the CISSP. After reading this book, I developed a clear information security intuition that made many of the CISSP study questions easier to answer.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, clear, balanced, & useful coverage of IT security.......2004-03-15

This book is short (good!) and full of information. The coverage seems very complete. The authors are careful not to get too involved in the details of the technology (also good, since said details will be obsolete in a year).

Instead they explain what security issues are significant, what the associated risks are, and what kind of cost effective responses are available. The emphasis throughout is on cost-effective responses: perfection is unaffordable, but not having a security policy is unacceptable. Volonino and Robinson focus on striking a middle ground.

I also liked their top down approach to IT security: 1) get high level commitment 2) lay out appropriate policies (& make sure everyone has signed off) 3) develop corresponding procedures 4) then, decide what mix of hardware, software, & network tools best implement those procedures. This starts with the people (most security problems can be traced back to human err) and avoids "vendor-driven security", which is seldom optimal for a specific situation. My favorite factoid from the book is that the quality of the security at a company is directly proportional to the rank of the chief security officer, i.e. to how seriously the company takes security.

All in all, "Principles and Practice of Information Security" is a very good place to start if you want to get a handle on IT security. And I think it will also function well as a way to review how balanced and thorough your existing security plans are.

5 out of 5 stars Good, Readable Primer on Information Security.......2007-08-22

This is a very readable primer on information security that address a number of topics including symmetric key crypto, public key crypto, hash functions, cryptanalysis, authentication, authorization, software anomalies, software insecurity, malware, and operating systems. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very well written book!.......2006-01-27

If I had to have only one book on information security, this would be the book!

Without trying to be encyclopedic, Professor Stamp gives a panoramic view of four key areas in information security: cryptography, access control, protocols, and software. Within each of these four parts, relevant and diverse topics are discussed and studied. The breadth and depth of coverage is appropriate for both the general reader as well as for the expert.

Topics in the book include: symmetric key crypto, public key crypto, hash functions, cryptanalysis, authentication, authorization, authentication protocols, real-world security protocols, software flaws and malware, insecurity in software, operating systems and security.

The book reads well and does not have the "dry flavor", so often found in other books of this type. I recommend this book, without reservation!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent security text.......2006-01-02

I have many security related books. Among them, this book is the best to understand the information security within one book. First of all, it is easy to read. It also covers whole information security area. For the persons who study information security, I strongly recommend this book to read.

4 out of 5 stars Mark does a fine job of it.......2005-11-22

Mark has written an excellent book on technical aspects of information protection. For the coverage he provides, he has done an excellent job of explaining things at a technical level suited to students in undergraduate computer science classes or other similar corporate arenas. Well written, nicely done, and well worth the price tag.

5 out of 5 stars Information Security for the Practical Mind.......2005-09-29

If you're new to IT Security or beginning to get stuck in the mire that pervades most books on the topic, this is the resource you need. Between those books that are a mile wide and an inch-deep or those an inch wide and a mile-deep, readers are left with too little knowledge of the breadth of Information and Network Security and may become discouraged to learn enough about Information Security to make an informed decisions -- career or technology wise.

Because Information Security is a broad career choice where it's impossible to become an expert in all areas, this book uses the industry-accepted Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) defined by the International Information Systems Security Certifications Consortium, Inc. (...) as the organizing framework to describe the 10 domains of knowledge at a principles and practices level without over-complicating these topics with implementation details or product-specific bias.

If you're in the market for materials to fast-track your understanding of information systems security, look no further!

    Book Description

Digital watermarking is a key ingredient to copyright protection. It provides a solution to illegal copying of digital material and has many other useful applications such as broadcast monitoring and the recording of electronic transactions. Now, for the first time, there is a book that focuses exclusively on this exciting technology. Digital Watermarking covers the crucial research findings in the field: it explains the principles underlying digital watermarking technologies, describes the requirements that have given rise to them, and discusses the diverse ends to which these technologies are being applied. As a result, additional groundwork is laid for future developments in this field, helping the reader understand and anticipate new approaches and applications.

    * Emphasizes the underlying watermarking principles that are relevant for all media: images, video, and audio.
    * Discusses a wide variety of applications, theoretical principles, detection and embedding concepts and the key properties of digital watermarks--robustness, fidelity, data payload, and security
    * Examines copyright protection and many other applications, including broadcast monitoring, transaction tracking, authentication, copy control, and device control.
    * Presents a series of detailed examples called "Investigations" that illustrate key watermarking concepts and practices.
    * Includes an appendix in the book and on the web containing the source code for the examples.
    * Includes a comprehensive glossary of watermarking terminology

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An unified approach to digital watermarking.......2001-11-13

Digital Watermarking is definitely the first book to present in an unified approach the foundations of digital watermarking. The text is clear and didactic, following Cox, Miller and Bloom's writing style that has been evident in their seminal research papers. Very little previous knowledge on communications and information theory is required to follow the book, and still there is an appendix covering the background concepts on these subjects.
The topics are developed in an intuitive fashion, resorting to geometric analogies whenever possible, and the proposed programming experiments (which are backed up by source code both in an appendix and on-line) allow the reader to develop valuable insights on the concepts. Watermarking with side information, message coding as well as error analysis are extensively developed. A very "juicy" chapter is devoted to the applications and motivation of digital watermarking, covering timeliness subjects such as DVD copy control and the SDMI.

Theoretical issues are left for a tiny appendix, and not much use of it is made throughout the book. This is comprehensible in a book aimed to be an unified introduction to the subject. The notation that has been introduced in the very first papers by the authors is still used and it does not seem to be appropriate to present more elaborated theoretical developments. But again, this is justified when formality is being traded off by insight development and intuitive treatment. As a last critic, since virtually the whole book is devoted to image watermarking, maybe the next editions (I hope there will be more !) of this book should include the word "image" in the title.
This book will certainly boost your understanding about background concepts and shed more light on the overlapping among different research areas in digital watermarking.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2001-11-10

Finally a good review of this field. I haven't read the whole thing, but what I've read, I like. Well written, good table of contents. I've skimmed the whole book and looked at some of the source code. Code is easy to understand. This is not simply a long research paper or a collection of research papers, it is more like a text book. Glossary is helpful too.

    5 out of 5 stars Watermarking demistified.......2001-11-08

The book explain watermarking technology and uses fine but in order to help users to understand it better.

      Book Description

Key to our culture is that we can disseminate information, and then maintain and access it over time. While we are rapidly advancing from vulnerable physical solutions to superior, digital media, preserving and using data over the long term involves complicated research challenges and organization efforts.

Uwe Borghoff and his coauthors address the problem of storing, reading, and using digital data for periods longer than 50 years. They briefly describe several markup and document description languages like TIFF, PDF, HTML, and XML, explain the most important techniques such as migration and emulation, and present the OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Reference Model. To complement this background information on the technology issues the authors present the most relevant international preservation projects, such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and experiences from sample projects run by the Cornell University Library and the National Library of the Netherlands. A rated survey list of available systems and tools completes the book.

With this broad overview, the authors address librarians who preserve our digital heritage, computer scientists who develop technologies that access data, and information managers engaged with the social and methodological requirements of long-term information access.
