Book Description
"This is simply the best book on the topic.”
—Randall Bell, Author, Home Owner's Manual
"Tyson and Griswold have truly opened the world of real estate investing to all by tackling often complex issues in this easy to understand and use book. I can't think of a better way to get smart about building wealth through rental properties than to read their excellent Real Estate Investing For Dummies!"
—Vern Hoven, CPA
Non-prime time TV is cluttered with infomercials about how you can buy non-prime real estate for next to nothing and get rich quick. Common sense should tell you that’s an exaggeration. (If common sense doesn’t tell you, bankers will.) Nevertheless, it is possible to get rich gradually by investing in real estate. Long term, you can expect to realize an annual return of 8 to 10% a year.
Real Estate Investing for Dummies gives you the keys to successful real estate investment, whether it’s in single family homes and condos, apartments, vacation homes, commercial properties (office, industrial, and retail), raw land, or REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts). With guidance from authors Eric Tyson, MBA, a financial counselor, and Robert S. Griswold, a veteran real estate investor, you’ll discover how to:
- Find and buy the best properties at a fair price
- Capitalize on opportunities such as foreclosures, no money down deals, auctions, tax sales, and more
- Secure financing and good mortgage terms
- Value, evaluate, and negotiate everything to do with real estate
- Work with agents and other professionals
- Project income potential and cash flow
- Handle contracts, inspections, and closings
Whether you’re interested in a fixer supper for rental, premier office space you can lease, or a vacation home you can enjoy and rent, when you become a buyer, you also become a landlord. That means you can hear from tenants any time, night or day. It means you may not hear from them when the rent is due. Real Estate Investing for Dummies also helps you:
- Find and keep good tenants
- Negotiate lease agreements
- Insure and maintain your property
- Keep good records for tax and accounting purposes
Remember, with any deal, you have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. So Real Estate Investing for Dummies gives you guidelines on when and how to sell and how to reinvest to build wealth. It also lists 10 real estate investments you shouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole. Especially if you’re tempted by those late-night infomercials, that warning could save you a fortune!
Customer Reviews:
Great Information, but with a verbal tick.......2007-09-21
This book is stupendous! It covers a tremendous amount of information to get you started in real estate investing. My wife and I are starting a real estate holding company and this book has been the foundation of our learning.
The only strange thing about the book is that for some reason the authors decided to only use the feminine pronouns "she" or "her" when referring to general individuals, such as "It's very difficult for an owner to lose her home and it's often even more difficult for her to..."
At first this was just odd, but it became a real distraction and annoyance that they never use "he or she" or the common practice in English of using the male pronoun for such situations.
Despite this sort of printed verbal tick, this is an excellent book with a lot of information.
Quick Arrival.......2007-09-06
I was amazed at how quickly I received this book. The book was in excellent shape.
Details, details and more details ..........2007-07-09
This book is a great companion to other books of a more thoeretical nature. Many real estate books focus on why you should invest and the benefits of investing.
This book does that, but then goes one step further. I think the authors and the 'For Dummies' team need to be congratulated as they have given everyone enough detail to make some very solid decisions about your investing.
Very worthwhile and definately well worth the $$. And very solid to know it's written by investors not salespeople.
house buying.......2007-06-15
Good book. Extremely in depth. This book will give you the big picture on buying a house. But most importanly should help you to avoid buying a house using the wrong criteria or reasons(ie. helps avoid a bad investment).
Good read.......2007-04-11
I'm still reading this book. It is organized well, easy to understand and perfect for anyone who is considering entering the world of real estate investing.

This may be the best comprehensive guide for home buyers. Home Buying for Dummies is coauthored by Eric Tyson, author of several other books in the For Dummies series, and Ray Brown, a long-time real estate professional. Like other books in the series, this one is an easy and even entertaining read. But it does not gloss over details in pursuit of simplicity. Home Buying for Dummies covers all the bases, providing clear explanations and reasonable judgments on how to select a mortgage, hire a real estate agent, find the right house, and negotiate a good deal. The book goes further than most in providing helpful, specific information. For example, in discussing ways to save money for a future down payment, Home Buying for Dummies even includes the phone numbers for various mutual funds appropriate to different investment time frames. --Barry Mitzman

Obvious Find for Practical Advice.......2007-09-27
This text is an excellent primer for those of us who are novices in the terminology and techniques involved in what could possibly be the most important financial decisions of our lives. And aren't afraid to admit it.
Slow delivery.......2007-09-21
Still have not received this product as of today 9/21. Item was needed to give as gift for 9/22.
Informative and Useful Book..........2007-08-14
This book fully explains the process of deciding when and how to buy a home. I plan to purchase a home within the next three years, and feel that I will well-prepared.
Very helpful.......2007-08-06
We picked this up when we were going to buy our first home. It helped us to make the right decision and not feel stupid by asking questions.
Informative.......2007-07-13
I was hoping that by reading this book I would be able to buy a home on my own without a realtor, however, although truly informative, I doubt that it provided me with enough information to be that independent. Definitely a good book, but needs to be back up with other sources.

For many of us, the single biggest financial transaction is buying a house. Even more significant than the hefty down payment we fork over is the 15- to 30-year mortgage that needs feeding every month. If you have this much at stake, a little knowledge can go a long way, which is where Eric Tyson and Ray Brown come in. In Mortgages for Dummies, Tyson and Brown (who also wrote Home Buying for Dummies and House Selling for Dummies) provide a comprehensive introduction for anyone who is contemplating a mortgage. The book tells you how to evaluate your creditworthiness, determine your borrowing power, and shop for a lender, as well as covering the various types of loans. The authors also devote a section to refinancing and discuss what you should consider when prepaying a loan. They include amortization and remaining-balance tables, and a useful glossary. Whether you're a first-time home buyer or are just looking to refinance, you'll find this a valuable, easy-to-use guide. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
For typical homeowners, the monthly mortgage payment is either their largest or, after income taxes, second-largest expense item. When you’re shopping for a mortgage without the proper knowledge, you could easily waste many hours of your time in addition to the financial losses suffered by not getting the best loan you can. Choosing the right mortgage can help you save money for more important financial goals such as higher education and retirement.
Mortgages For Dummies, Second Edition is for anyone who needs a loan to buy their first home, wants to refinance their existing mortgage, or would like to tap into the equity they’ve built up. Updated to include the very latest on every kind of loan, this friendly, easy-to-understand guide will help you:
- Shop for the best home-purchase mortgage
- Overcome loan qualification obstacles
- Negotiate lower loan fees and closing costs
- Save by refinancing the house
- Increase retirement income with a reverse mortgage
Once you select the right mortgage for your situation, you can explore, step-by-step, how to get the best possible deal. Mortgages For Dummies, Second Edition also covers the following topics and more:
- Determining your borrowing power
- Qualifying for a mortgage
- Locating and selecting a loan
- Finding the best lender and options
- Tackling loan paperwork
- Refinancing and other money makers
For most of us, the mortgage field is jammed with jargon and fraught with fiscal pitfalls. It’s up to you to seek the knowledge necessary to make your mortgage process more rewarding. This handy guide shows you everything you need to know to find your way through the home financing jungle and make the best decisions possible.
Customer Reviews:
Good For Starters.......2007-05-22
The book touches on the very basics of buying a home. Lots of industry terms defined - this solves a communication barrier to often seen in this industry. Often times, some lenders forget to check the literacy of there clients and breeze through the whole process without defining some key terms. With this book, loan officers/brokers/agents and clients are on the same page.
First time buyers who read this book will feel a little more confident, especially with reading articles and books pertaining to buying/investing in a home.
Mortgages For Dummies, 2nd Edition.......2007-05-18
Very well written... useful not only for mortgage shoppers but also for professionals working in fields related to Financial Services!
Saved me a fortune!!!!!!.......2007-05-01
This book saved me about $22,000 when I purchased my house. It prepared me to know what to look for and what to ask for when searching for a mortgage! I had purchased the home buying for dummies book and while reading that I learned I needed to know so much more about the financing aspect. Since it was my first home purchase I was clueless. This book walked me through and helped me discover what my personal needs were. I found my dream house, a perfect fit mortgage, and closed all in 2 weeks. AMAZING!
very little substance.......2007-04-29
As a first-time homebuyer, I was looking for some in-depth knowledge of mortgages. This wasn't it. It gave a very broad overview and told me very little that I didn't already know. It is fine for the true dummies out there.
Loan Officer Info.......2007-04-04
This book was wonderful to read even though it is geared toward the person buying a mortgage, and I am a loan officer, that sells the mortgage. It had numerous terms spelled out so they could be easily understood. It marked off warning signs of things to stay away from. I feel this book will be in my desk for use constantly.

Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction to Reverse Mortgages.......2007-08-23
This is a good primer in reverse mortgages. I have been frustrated in querying my CPA and other financial authorities on the subject of the Reverse Mortgage and this book helps answer most of the important questions. I didn't want to get an MBA by reading this book and so many of the books on the subject are too detailed for what the average homeowner needs. This one fills the bill.I'de recommend it.
NOTHING DUMB ABOUT THIS.......2007-05-07
I've searched articles on the web, had the required reverse mortgage counseling, and bought this book. All you really need is this book.In coverage, organization, and language, it presents and clarifies a solution of a major problem for seniors.
Great Buy!.......2007-03-11
This is great for learning about Reverse Mortgages. I highly recommend this book.
continuing education for notary signing agents.......2007-01-30
Although this book is primarily intended for those considering a home equity conversion mortgage, I bought it because, as a notary signing agent I am occasionally called to conduct reverse mortgage closings. I wanted to have a better understanding of this type of loan. This book gave me that. I highly recommend it to all notary signing agents who want to gain more knowledge in this area, and be better prepared to do these types of closings.
Great mortgage!.......2006-07-11
I bought and read this little book that is packed with excellent information and, as a result, got a reverse mortgage. The Cash now available to me has paid off some medical bills and made it possible to make some repairs on my home in preparation for the hurricane season. It's a fail safe way of converting equity in your home to cash that you can enjoy now, instead of giving all of it to your inheritors when you die. I recomment it enthusiastically.

Buyer Be Knowledgeable is a humorous and sometime frightening account of my home buying experience. It is a trip down the rabbit hole. Stops include: the attorney's office, the escrow office, the deposition table and the Appellate Court. This book will be informative. The book will give you questions to ask and sources for help. This book will give you the courage to say: STOP! NO! ENOUGH! I MEAN IT!
Customer Reviews:
The Most Fun I Ever Had Learning Something New.......2007-08-29
Bud Miller is an excellent writer. And Buyer Be Knowledgeable is a helpful and worthwhile read. This book is a self-help manual of sorts; but it is also a poignant glimpse of a very interesting man. We, the readers, are treated to an interactive experience. We learn as we laugh and we gasp at Bud's misfortune while we smile at his resourcefulness and inablility to give up. Bud has managed to polish facets of his life to a lusterous gleam...and still manage to leave enough "diamond in the rough" to let us all know he is still a bumbling schmuck.
I reccomend that Real Estate agents order a copy of this book for all their First-Home clients or their Dream-home empty nesters.
