Good, but examles are too simple.......2006-11-17
I use the Perl language daily (and I love it). I own several of Ellie's books and have taken classes from her in Silicon Valley. The books are clear, the index is excellent, but the examples are too simple. Many examples use input typed in from the keyboard (instead of reading in input from a file). Business applications/corporate applications usually read in input from a file.
One fo the better books I have run across on Perl........2005-10-28
Good straight forward examples... most show the input, the code and the output produced by the code. You need only understand the logic of programming... the book fills in the rest you need to know. I have six or seven books on Perl but always reach for this or The Little Black Book for syntax and examples. Invest in a good editor designed for Perl programming like OptiPerl [with syntax checking and debugger] and you will be well on your way!
Perl by Example.......2005-09-23
Clealy written, and in terms I believe are easily understood by programmers.
Also, wonderful price! (under $2.00)
Perl script examples.......2005-08-27
If you are looking for a book that provides Perl script examples, then this is the book for you. Provides numerous examples of perl scripts in each section, plus then the author breaks down line by line what the script does. I use this book in conjunction with O'Reilly's Learning Perl.
Perl by example 3rd edition rules!!!.......2004-07-25
I have been learning Perl for about 2 months now, I have a little shell scripting experience but that is it. I 1st started with Learning Perl by O'Reilly. Good book but lacking on the examples, I then went to programming Perl by Larry Wall, a great book for intermediate to advanced, didn't help me much beginning Perl. I then picked up Perl by Examples 3rd edition, this book is superb, a well written programming book. I have read many Computer based books and this definately ranks top 2 in my opinion. The examples are excellent, she shows you the code, the ouput of each line, and then explains each line in every example. So if you forgot something from the 2nd chapter and it shows up in the 5th, it is explained again to you in the example, so you don't have to go through the book and find it. This is a must have for any Perl programmer.

A tough read for the newby.......2006-07-10
I was reading JavaScript by Example in parallel with Beginning JavaScript, 2nd Edition for a class. I found that Quigley was trying too hard to jam too much information into a small space. As someone new to JavaScript, I found her explanations difficult and her writing unclear. In comparison, Beginning JavaScript is bigger, but kinder and more comprehensible to the new reader. If weight is an issue, buy Quigley. Otherwise, you are better off with Beginning JavaScript.
Terrific book........2005-09-12
Terrific book, a little (editing) problems in the book, but if you have a little experience in Javascript they can be overlooked. Actually the few errors keep you on your toes!
Very good if you are the right type of reader for it.......2005-05-19
Wether or not this book is right for you, really depends on what you need from a Javascript text book. Armed with some basic knowledge of HTML, this was the perfect text to put me up to speed on the topic. There are many examples (as the title implies), giving you an exhaustive treatment of all topics. This treatment doesn't leave anything out, and though it would be nice to have the answers to the exercises, anything which stumps you can be solved by going over the examples again.
There are many explanations for every example given, but it's quite easy to skip around to what you need if you know some of the material already.
Excellent self-study tool.
Pretty good.......2003-12-31
A few discrepancies between the examples, explanations, and especially the CD, eg: where I think she changed a file or variable name in one place and forgot to change it in the other, so you spend some time trying to reconstruct what she meant to say.
Otherwise well paced, good for learning.
Inheritance.......2003-11-27
I think chapter 8 misuses the term "inheritance", which will muddy the waters for someone trying to understand inheritance. It says "Each object has a prototype whose properties it inherits". Would it be better to say "You can tack new methods or properties on to an existing class (eg: String) using the prototype property"?

Customer Reviews:
Good Intermediate JSP Book.......2003-10-23
This book will probably be most useful to someone who knows JSPs and servlets and has worked with them, and is looking for better or alternative ways of writing JSP applications.
The first two chapters provide a review of JSPs and an overview of web deployment. They include a nice JSP/MySQL example, with
instructions indicating how to build the MySQL database and incorporate into the JSP example using JDBC.
Chapters 3 and 4 include discussions and examples of how to use JavaBeans and custom tags. The JavaBean example shows how to handle the display of a large amount of data retrieved from a database.
The use of J2EE patterns is discussed in the next several chapters, as befitting a book with "best practices" in its title. The four patterns covered are the Decorating Filter, Front Controller, View Helper, and Dispatcher View.
The remainder of the book covers some topics that are not directly connected to JSPs, but may be useful in a wide range of software applications. These include regression testing, and the use of JUnit and JMeter; deployment, and Ant and CVS, as well as precompiling JSP pages; and application frameworks, including an example.
In short, the book includes a collection of topics not often found in a JSP book.
I noticed some minor quibbles, such as use of single-character variables and older break tags (rather than
),
but generally speaking I find the book to be quite informative and practical, especially in the discussions and use of open source software such as MySQL, JUnit, JMeter, and Ant, with JSPs.
The best book on JSP / Web application development.......2003-04-04
This book draws a clear picture on JSP web application development. If you are a JSP beginner, this book is a must read. It teaches you the right way to do things from the beginning.
I really enjoyed its step by step approach that leads to the framework based application development, makes a lot of sense to me.
Disappointing read.......2003-04-01
I can save you money on the purchase of this book. If you can answer "yes" to the questions below, there is no need to buy this book:
* Do you know what JSP and servlets are?
* Do you know how to separate presentation and business logic with JavaBeans and custom tags?
* Are you familiar with MVC?
If so, no need for the book. I was expecting much more. It's less best practice, and more typical web app development. What disappointed me further was various comments in the text that displayed poor practices in areas outside of JSP web development, e.g. "the first step in developing a jsp web application is designing the user interface."
My one-star rating can be summarized as follows:
* Poor typesetting and book formatting: -1
* Very few "best practices" -2
* Below average writing, low content-to-price tag ratio -1
Fills an important niche.......2003-02-08
I am teaching myself server-side Java programming. After reading, using, and reviewing many books on Java server-side web development, I had found they fell into two categories: Beginner and advanced. The beginner books typically introduce a lot of bad coding practices, such as filling JSP pages with java code, or using outdated examples of Servlets that output HTML. After a few chapters of this, they jump to the Struts framework, thereby never helping the reader build good coding practices and skills.
The advanced books get quickly into frameworks like Struts, and also employ EJBs. EJBs are not needed in many web applications, where they introduce unneeded complexity. What I wanted but couldn't find was a good book that covered the middle ground: how to build applications based on JSPs and Servlets that demonstrate good design and coding practices, with a realistic sample application, and yet understandable for someone learning the J2EE technology.
When I found this book I was surprised to see that it concisely and clearly presented all the key topics I had hoped for. I found it by accident, because I never would have guessed from the scant 3 or 4 reviews on Amazon that it would be worth looking at.
Prerequisite knowledge for this book is basic Java skills and an introductory understanding of JSPs and Servlets. I liked this because so many beginner books spend a lot of time going over the basics. The book covers all the key intermediate-level topics you'll need to get started coding good Java web applications. This book goes beyond others I read in also showing how to use JUnit to do unit testing, and Ant to do application deployment. The author demonstrates these so clearly and simply that a person new to these tools will find it easy to follow and put to use.
Finally, the author finishes with taking the reader through how to build a basic but solid application framework that even the beginner to frameworks can follow. This framework is no Struts with its relatively steep learning curve. By the time the reader has got to the framework chapter he has learned what he needs to understand the framework. As if this were not enough, the author then shows how to deploy the framework, and then use it to build a sample application. All this is done in slim, concise, easily-to-follow chapters and code that is clearly and completely presented. You won't have to go hunting through the source code download or CD to research a bunch of code that is not illustrated in the book itself. It's all in the book.
A previous review rated this book low because he thought it didn't have a realistic application. I don't know what he is looking for exactly, but I thought the application was quite real enough in giving a fully functioning, realistic, web application. It is no super app, but neither is it a toy app. Again, it aims for the later novice to intermediate-level skill set. And I think it succeeds well.
Not bad, but could be better.......2002-12-04
I agree mostly with what some of the other positive reviews read. The discussion about different design patterns was interesting to read.
However, I did get caught up on the source code in the book. I would think that a book is supposed to be about "best practices" would handle quotes in database inserts/updates. Is it common practice to assume that your form data will never contain erroneous information that will cause your system to fail?
I don't want to harp on this book too bad (many others are worse), but I am still searching for a solid JSP book that has sample code on how to build a solid/useful application from start to finish, while maintaining a clean separation of business logic and actual presentation.

Learning by example - the ones already written that is........2002-10-28
Working with JavaScript is certainly becoming more and more a part of the web pages I am involved with, from wanting a clock to form validation to buttons. There is so many things and uses for JavaScript that the list seems endless.
What I found most helpful about this book was not only was the cd filled with over 300 pre-written scripts, but that the book also has coding examples for you to follow and learn from. For me learning JavaScript is a challenge and using the examples in this book has certainly it easier to produce quality JavaScripts.
Overall an excellent add-on the already highly successful JavaScript Bible, as you'll see when you look at the chapter headings. For example Chapter 1 in this book refers to chapter 15 in the JavaScript Bible.

Perl 5 by Example offers a reasonably-paced introduction to programming in Perl at a level accessible to readers with no prior programming experience. Especially valuable for readers who learned HTML on their own and now want to try more sophisticated Web programming, Perl 5 by Example starts with the basics--what are literals, variables, functions, and so forth--and advances through using Perl with CGI, to process Web-based forms, for instance. David Medinets includes numerous notes, tips, and cross-references that can help novice programmers avoid getting tripped up by common mistakes or misunderstandings.
Customer Reviews:
I bet this review gets buried.......2002-02-28
I agree with fellow reviewer, James Tolley from NYC, I honestly don't understand how this book got such high ratings. I read with amazement other reviews by people who claim to be programmers, they must be pals of the author. I will itemize in detail where I find problems with this book:
1)
This book is riddled with typos and errors. Not a good thing when you are trying to learn something new. The book leads you astray. To the authors credit, he has published his book on a web site and it seems to be much better than the printed book. But then, why would you BUY the book? The good news is that the book provides nice wide margins so you can note the typos and make corrections.
2)
Examples of perl scripts (hence, Perl 5 by EXAMPLE) are all through the book and at first glance it looks like a great way to learn. Problem is, I've just found 2 examples (one right after the other) that don't even work as examples for what was taught. In chapter 5 we are learning about the "my" and "local" functions. I took the examples provided (from the Web site, mind you) and ran them with the "my" and with the "local" operators in them and they ran great. But then I removed them and the script produced the same result. So what was the point?
3)
This book offers review questions at the end of each chapter. The answers to the review questions are provided at the end of the book in Appendix A. That's good. However, in my opinion, the review questions aren't nearly as important as the review exercises that follow the questions at the end of every chapter. The exercises are where you are asked to write perl programs to reinforce what you learned in the chapter you just read. There are no answers to these all important exercises. Not in the book, not on the CD-ROM not on the author's web site. When I wrote to the author he offered to review my work as time permits. Nice offer, but not what I had in mind.
I have several books on perl and the O'Reilly books (i.e. Learning Perl) are far better. Learning Perl has exercises at the end of each chapter and the answers are provided in the back.
This book will only serve to confuse beginners with misinformation and force them to extra unnecessary effort in order to combat the lax attitude in which this book was produced. A proofreader that knows how to write perl might have helped on this account.
The concept for the book and the approach are terrific ideas. But do you want to have to read the book and then check the Web site and run every script to make sure you weren't given misinformation? This is a book that depends on you to allow for a "fudge factor." Expect more for your hard earned money.
Excellent book for both beginners and pros. Tons of examples.......2002-02-20
If you are thinking about learning how to program in PERL then by all means get a copy of this book. You'll also find it as a useful reference even after you master the basics.
I used to program in C/C++ and then use UNIX shell scripts to automate all the programs and processes on the server. Of course, that's until i discovered the power and advantages of PERL over scripting languages (ksh, bsh, etc) and decided to learn it. I picked up this book during the end of year holiday and learned all that i need to know to get started. I returned to my job two weeks later with enough knowledge to start writing programs in PERL and automating all our processes under UNIX.
Even after a year experience with PERL, i still come back to this book whenever i need to lookup a function or use regular expressions. Lots and lots of examples that will definitely speed up the learning curve.
Excellent book for a beginner.......2001-10-11
Very good book for someone starting from Scratch. Have given it to a couple of my employees and within a week they were productive and had already done a few programs.
As a new Perl user myself, don't know how good it is for advanced users, but for beginners it is very good.
The topics on hand are clearly explained and the examples for each topic are usefull and easy to use.
A superior PERL book.......2001-01-17
I am a professional PERL programmer and I find that this book is still very usefull as a reference. It is an excellent primer for people who don't have formal training in programming. I have recommended it several times to non-programmers and have gotten many thanks for the referal.
Typically I'm an O'Reilly fan but if you are trying to decide between "Learning PERL" or this book... buy THIS BOOK. Inside it's intended scope this book is the best reference you can currently buy.
Even if you don't need the programming introduction you can still reference the excellant Regular Expressions Chapters and the amazing Appendicies and Index.
This book will take you from a novice to an intermediate PERL programmer. For that I give this book 5 stars. If you need to do advanced PERL programming this book is still a good reference... but you are looking for another book then.
Very helpful.......2000-10-12
I have been perl programming for a little over 2 years now, and this is the _best_ book I've found for beginning to intermediate programming. The O'Reilly books, even the "Learning Perl" book doesn't give the reader enough examples, nor are the explanations aimed toward the new programmer. Perl5 By Example does a fantastic job of explaining the examples given, and doing so in terms a new programmer would understand.

Book Description
JavaScript 1.5 by Example starts with a taste of JavaScript
<196> what it is, what it¿s for, and what readers need to get started. The book then explains how to add JavaScript to existing HTML pages, leading readers into the fundamentals of the language including JavaScript syntax, notation and conventions, communicating with users via input and output, manipulating variables and data, logic statements in JavaScript, and object programming with JavaScript. The book progresses to an explanation of JavaScript¿s role in Dynamic HTML, and how that power can be exploited to create animation, navigation, forms processing and more.
Customer Reviews:
Its ok for a begginer - except for the mistakes in the book.......2004-09-22
I picked this book up having no experience with programming or javascript. I would like to state that the 3 star rating is based on only going through about a third of the book at this point.
For an absolute beginner, many of the concepts have been relatively easy to grasp up to this point and the book seems relatively straight forward and easy to read. All I seem to be making is pop up alert boxes, of course using different reasons to be making them. Being new to javascript...this could be the norm.
My main complaint about this book is all of the errors I have found in it, which consequently all seem to be in the examples. For a person as new to this as I am, these types of screw ups that could have been caught with a decent proofer, cause a lot of confusion. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how the typeof value of x equaled what they showed, because it made absolutely no sense. Of course I finally reaslized that someone had inserted the wrong graphic and never noticed it.
I also went in circles in another area about the ternary conditional operator (?:) until I gave up and moved ahead and then realized that they had printed the incorrect answer to the equation.
Considering the number of proofing slips and I am only 1/3 through, I am going to be purchasing a different book.
Great for a beginner like me!.......2003-07-21
Hi
I got this book since i have read by example books before and loved them.I really enjoyed this book too. This book is for beginners that know basically what programming is but don't actually know any language.
The lessons are slow paced so you get it, with plenty of examples. The only complaint i might have is that the book has some typos in the code but i have figured them all out and corrected them, proving that i am learning(I am yet to see a programming book with no typos in the code examples.).
I highly recommend this book to a newbie that has read something like "Programming for dummies" as a primer.
Disappointed.......2002-07-17
"Pop up windows using JavaScript" would be a more accurate title. I learned more from online tutorials than this book delivered.
Not for the beginner!.......2002-03-14
I was sent this book by my book club by mistake (waited too long and had to buy it.)... I started to read it and realized that it didn't start at the basics like I needed. HOWEVER after going through the wrox book "Begining JavaScript" and then picking this book back up I did learn a few different aspects of JavaScript that were not covered by the Wrox book. The book does bring to light a few different perspectives that might help somebody with certain programming needs, but that's about it. I am not knocking this book it does have it's place. Final thought is figure out what you need and if other books don't deliver this one might :)
I don't really know, but I don't think so........2001-08-31
I never really finished this book, I guess it tells you the basic things, I went from the cover to the end, and it really didn't help me out. I got it to learn specific things, new to "JavaScript 1.5" but it didn't tell me either. IE: scrollbar colors, and windows and yada yada. I don't know if it covers all it should, thanks. But if you're a beginner it's okay, I think.

A step-by-step Javascript beginner self study book.......2001-10-30
I bought this book when I was curious about Java language. I think Javascript could be a bridge to understand the Java itself. This book is useful for you only if you already know about HTML. If you do not familiar with HTML, I suggest that you read "HTML by example" by Todd Stauffer (QUE edition).
This book is a nice introduction to Javascript and is intended "solmnly" for beginner. You will not assumed to understand anything about Javascript before reading this book. The author wrote this book as a step-by-step beginner self study. Any beginner will not be lost and confused, in general.
Some example programs might not work as other reviewer stated, but some other examples work. Despite the not-working-example-programs (if any), this book is still very useful for beginner. I think this book should be at least one of Javascript every beginner reference.
Worth what I paid for it.......2000-08-05
I picked up a copy of this book to learn a bit about Javascript. I thought that the book was well written, geared a bit more towards intermediate users than beginners. What I found interesting, was that it had real world examples in it.
I also noted, that many of the reviewers seemed upset with some of the examples. When I loaded older versions of Netscape, it seemed to be more a problem with the netscape javascript interpeter then with the code itself. Also, one should take into account the date of printing. Some research shows that when first published, Netscape 3.0 was in beta.
I liked the book. And I honestly think the other reviewers were a bit too harsh.
Terrible.......1999-06-29
Need I say more
Terrible for beginners.......1998-09-25
This book does a terrible job of explaining Javascript to beginners. Look elsewhere!
Don't by it unless you want to learn to debug!!!.......1998-09-05
The only reason this book received one star is because Amazon.com doesn't think any book deserves zero stars. DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!! I question Stephen Feather's knowledge of Java Script!!! I have had to debug each and every code example in the whole book!!! I wasted more time debugging Mr. Feather's poor knowledge of the JaveScript object model than I did learning about it!!!! I will NEVER buy another QUE book again if this is the kind of poorly edited books they put their name on!!! if you want to learn JavaScript, look elsewhere... O'Reilly is far more competent that Mr. Feather. I highly recommend the "Webmaster in a Nutshell" book and CDROM. The additional cost make it worth it!!!!
