I am almost finished with this book and cannot tell when I am learning what Mike Meyers thinks is important, and when I am learning something pertinent to the OS exam. Also, the Q&A at the end of each chapter provide no answer keys.

I passed the hardware exam and was confident that I would. I already had sufficient hardware experience. I am extremely unsure that this book will prepare me for the OS exam. Definitely not what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Superb PC Reference.......2005-11-12

I am an EET studying for certifications. Also I use this book for a general troubleshooting reference. This is one of the best out there. I have several others and most just ramble about the technologies as an overview but do not get into applications needed. Meyers conveys the information as he is addressing people who are working in the real world. Good diagrams and the book is very well put together. Hey it is McGraw Hill. A top notch Publisher. A+

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Bargain.......2005-08-19

While I would not count on the book to teach me everything I must know to pass the A+ exams, I would definitely trust it to give me a strong foundation. Meyers includes all the basics and then some, and he goes into detail in a manner that should cater to almost all experience levels. The thing I liked the best about this book was how easy it was to read from beginning to end. Highly recommended to those who are looking for a place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Very Readable with Lots of Detail.......2005-07-07

The text is well presented with about 40% white space on each page. The important items in each topic are highlighted and reviewed at the end of the chapter. My only suggestion for improvement would be to provide an answer key. Each question and key word has the page the topic was covered and hopefully the answer is there staring you in the face.

The author's tone is that of a "regular" person talking to a "regular" person. The CD that came with book is excellent, but simply not enough questions to feel comfortable passing the A+ exam on the first try.

Several schools in the local area use this exact text for instructor lead classes. I'd buy this text (expensive !! like a college text) but well worth it. Not too much detail for a tech, but more than a newbie would know going in.

5 out of 5 stars A #1 effort from the #1 authority on the subject!.......2003-12-10

We all know that Mike Meyers is go to man for A+ and that is All-In-One Guide is a huge success and that a great number of people, including myself, owe him a huge bit of thanks for helping us to pass the exams. Now imagine taking the best parts of his guides and break it down even further and that is exactly what has been done here in this book.

The book is an excellent study tool for passing the A+ exams as both the Core and OS exam are covered in the 950 plus pages. One thing that could be added in future updates is a few more exercises. And once again as with other books from Mike, this one has material I have not seen anywhere else before. I also found that this book is current with the newest exams, which is another plus.

The thing that has always impressed me is the way that Mike Meyers can explain any topic. He is able to convey the concepts and ideas without boring the reader; in fact several students in my current A+ Class have found this manual to clear up some confusion from the study guides we are currently using.

The cd included has several practice exams and some videos you can use as additional study tools. The Learn Key Videos does a hardware check before allowing you to run the video demos, which is a good thing since 1 of my machines was not hardware ready. As with the written material, Mike is even better in the video segments with his use of real life situations and examples.

If you are just getting started and need a first step in the right direction, than let this book be the pace is all begins. Overall just another superb effort from Mike Meyers.

3 out of 5 stars Good exam prep but falls short for 70-270 mastery.......2007-03-05

It is not the text to learn everything you want to know for the 70-270 exam. There are other books that are much thicker and more comprehensive that will do that for you. As with the other Mike Meyers books, this is the "Reader's Digest" or "Cliff Notes" version of the material. I used the Mike Meyers Passport series for the A+ and Network+ exams and found them the best review available for the exams, but this Passport falls short of that. It lacked information in the "domain" areas and some of the newer capabilities of SP2. It was too focused on workgroups and fell short in the corporate domain areas. The CD practice exams didn't map very well with the questions I found on the real exam.

Mike Meyers XP Professional Passport still has value as a review to be used with other books. It is well organized, straight forward, and fairly well written. It is worth the price and the 15-20 hours it will take to master the material. I passed the 70-270 exam on the first try by a decent margin by using Mike Meyers along with two other texts and an on line class. This book, by itself, will not get you to the finish line.

3 out of 5 stars This book is outdated, but will still help you pass........2006-04-27

The Mike Meyers Passport series is excellent for certification prep. This is my third certification I've passed using these books, the other two being A+ and Network+. I took the 70-270 two times before realizing there was a Passport book for the test. I failed the test both times. Then I discovered this book, bought it, read it, and passed it the third time around. Passing is what matters the most, however I didn't get as high of a score as I wanted. I received a score of 715, with a passing score of 700 for this test, which means I barely passed. I believe the reason this happened is because the book has not been updated to include anything about Service Pack 2, or Bluetooth technology (yes, the test asks about Bluetooth). Also, the book seems to center around Windows XP Pro in a workgroup environment. However, the actual test mostly centers around XP Pro in a corporate domain environment. This book will still help you understand XP Pro since most of what is covered is still valid, but the test has changed since the book was published. I recommend this book only if you combine it with sample test questions from Testking.com. The questions provided by them are word-for-word from the actual 70-270 exam for both the questions and the answers that are given (I question the legality of the study guides provided by them, but obviously they must be legal since they have not been shut down by Microsoft or any of the many other testing companies they provide study guides for). If you get the questions and answers memorized, you will speed through the test while passing it with flying colors. I used the Testking materials myself, but didn't read all of it because I decided I'd rely mostly on this Mike Meyers book like I did with the CompTIA tests, though I now wish I had read the Testking study guide all the way through. The Microsoft tests are much more difficult than anything by CompTIA. In all fairness, I still passed and could not have done it without this book, so I give it 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Similar to..........2005-12-31

I read through this book in a fair amount of time. Most of the details were on the money. This book and exam is very similar to the MCDST certification offered for XP. This book gave me a few extra "hints" that I could have used when I took my MCDST. Overall, this is a good book for this exam.

5 out of 5 stars You can pass with this book!.......2005-08-03

I estimate that book covers 90% of the exam. I believe the only other resources cover the other 10% is experience and plenty of time on microsoft.com. I will also say that this is by far the toughest Microsoft exam that I have taken (12 of them and counting). If you know this book well and you are a good test taker, you will pass this exam.

5 out of 5 stars More concise than other books.......2004-10-20

Out of all the books I looked at for the 70-270 exam, this was the most accurate. I bought the Exam-Cram series book, and thought it was poorly writen, loaded with irrelevant information, and the practice test included with it was horrible. The Mike meyers book was well writen, informative, had a good practice test, and overall was a great study guide. But even with both books, it took me two tests to pass the 70-270. Mike Myers book isn't all you'll need for test day, but it's the best study guide on the market. The thing about Microsoft's tests is that the questions can be broad, and require hands on experience to anwser them.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I passed.......2004-05-08

I passed the hardware exam on my first try. However, it did not have a great amount to do with this book. Although the book helped me feel confident about my knowledge it did not teach me anything new that I needed for the exam. The book seemed more geared to what Mike Meyers thinks a technician should know about PCs more than what CompTIA thinks a computer technician should know.

I am a little more uncomfortable about the operating systems test and will not rely only on the Mike Meyers book to prepare me for it. I will use the Meyers book in conjunction with A+ certification for dummies.

3 out of 5 stars Just the Facts please.......2004-04-06

I would have appreciated this resource better if his ego was left out of the writing - too many opinions and too much humor. I don't care to learn about the personality of the author, I am more interested in the content, the raw knowledge for which I am paying, presented in a clean, professional and efficient manner.

This level of mediocrity will prepare you for the poorly written Comptia A+ Tests.

4 out of 5 stars No answer guide.......2004-03-31

While this book is very good at what it does, teach you about PC hardware to prepare you for the A+ exam, it gives self test exams after each chapter without providing the answers. If you don't mind thumbing through the chapter to verify your answers you will probably like this book. It's a pity rhis information wasn't included in the description of this book. I called McGraw Hill's customer service and they simply stated there is no answer guide to this book. You're on your own. The same holds true with Mike Meyer's A+ guide to Operating Systems.

I was required to buy this book for a class in college. My instructor worked up a hype for Mr. Meyers' A+ books. To my utter disappointment, this book did not teach me a thing. In fact, I sold this book early in the semester and finished the semester with a different book. If Mr. Meyers really is an A+ guru, then this book is weak to his standards. This book will not pass you on the A+ exam.

Software developers make their programs ever more graphical; interfaces become ever more slick. But underneath the buttons and sliders, PCs are electronic systems comprising power supplies, logic processors, and specialized circuitry for such functions as video and sound. When the machine grinds to a halt, someone has to know how to identify the problem and get it straightened out. That's the function of the CompTIA A+ certification, and this new edition of Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport will help you earn it. Meyers combines reams of detailed information about IBM-standard PCs (which is to say, those running Intel, AMD, and Cyrix) with rock-solid troubleshooting advice. Look here for electronic details of the IDE and SCSI interfaces, as well as strategies for figuring out whether a problem is in a drive or in its controlling electronics.

Meyers has organized his book around the two A+ exams, which means you'll find excellent coverage of the subjects CompTIA includes (hardware from early days through the Pentium III era, and Microsoft MS-DOS and Windows operating systems through Windows 2000). Inversely, you'll find no coverage of potentially useful subjects that CompTIA doesn't test (Linux and Microsoft Windows XP, most notably). Updated coverage--of new USB and FireWire standards, as well as memory specifications--meets the high standard of the previous edition. This book will help you prepare for the A+ exams; it and a couple of supplementary texts will get you ready for the job site. --David Wall

Topics covered: The electronics of IBM-standard personal computers (motherboards, processors, memory, disk drives, video cards, network interfaces, and so on), and strategies for safely and efficiently troubleshooting and repairing them. Later chapters explain how to do configuration work in Microsoft MS-DOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 Professional.

5 out of 5 stars "A+ Certified!!".......2007-10-05

All hail the "Alpha Geek" Mike Meyers!! I took the A+ Hardware exam in September 2006 and the OS Technologies exam in April 2007 and passed both easily using this Passport book and Mike Meyer's bigger book the "All In One A+ Certification" Guide. Everything that is written in the Passport book will be covered on the exam. Read through the whole book carefully about two times and you will do just fine. I've been doing hardware/software support now for about 5 years, and even I've learned some new things thanks to the help of Mike Meyer's book. If you are very new to hardware or software, I would recommend getting some hands-on experience in addition to reading the material. Do some volunteer work at your local charity/non-profit organization. Offer to help your friends or neighbors with their computing problems. You won't believe how much more proficient you will become the more you actually do it. Practice does make perfect, especially when dealing with hardware and software issues. Good luck to everyone pursuing the A+ Certification. :)

3 out of 5 stars Don't bother reading the reviews, they are for the old book........2007-08-22

Amazon has all the old pre 3rd edition reviews posted. These reviews are for the old books and the old exams.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2007-08-09

I wish people would take the tests before rating these books.

My scores are 810/900 and 840/900 for Essentials and 602 respectively. Passing scores are 675 and 700 with 100 being the minimum.

I bought this book and A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition (A+ Certification All in One Exam) by the same author. I also bought the exam vouchers from them which came with 300 practice questions. Both books come with practice questions both in the books and additional ones on the accompanying CDs. However, the CDs and the downloaded questions were mostly repeats and nothing like the actual exams (same goes for the books).

I have over twenty years of tinkering with computers. I was an aerospace engineer and an Oracle database programmer. I just wanted to get this Certification for kicks. There is a lot of fluff in both books which has nothing to do with the exams. Neither book really tells you how the actual exam questions are like. Actual exams are generally much simpler and test you mostly on your broad knowledge rather than the fine details (the exams does not ask which socket Pentium II uses, but it does ask what does a series of long beeps mean after you boot up). If you know the basics and understand the logic, you will pass. You still need to know some details, but they are not the hard ones. There has to be better book out there.

Even though I already knew 80% of the subject matter, I studied real hard. There is more stuff in the other book worth knowing though (not for the test). But personally, fluff puts me to sleep. Just keep it brief and to the point and pertinent to the test, that's what the books are selling.

If you buy these books, make sure you already have some experience in the field and that you really study these books like a text book.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2007-01-25

I PASSED WITH ONLY THIS BOOK!, THE A+ SERIES FROM MIKE MEYER'S ARE THE BEST!

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but too many errors.......2006-09-23

I just passed my A+ tests; both in the 700 range, so I have to give Mike Meyers kudos for a really good book. The reason I gave this book 3 stars though is because there were too many errors in it. Words used that shouldn't have been used, sentences that made no sense, figures that were misnumbered, etc. I also used the 1100 A+ questions and those were also screwed up. One question said that ME can use NTFS. I emailed Mike Meyers about the book and he blamed the publisher for all the mistakes in the book. I've heard that other authors and publishers are just as bad so I guess we don't have much of a choice here. I did pass the tests so
even with all the mistakes, I am getting his Network+ book since it was rated so high. There really is no excuse for all the mistakes in books like these. In chapter 17 you will see "An NIC" instead of "A NIC" over and over again. That is just one out of many mistakes. I don't know how that could be the publisher's fault but I'll give Mike Meyers the benefit of the doubt.
