Book Description

Financing Large Projects is one of the most comprehensive books written on the art of project finance. Project finance is a technique employed for the purpose of mobilizing capital for very large start-up projects, or greenfields, based on the cash flow merits of the project--usually with little or no external support provided by parent companies in the form of guarantees. Unlike other books, this one addresses the financial, technical, legal and environmental aspects of financing complex projects. In explaining the principles involved, the authors followed the project development cycle illustrating how projects are evolved from inception, usually through international competitive bidding, to financial closure when all debt and equity needed to construct and operate the project that has been mobilized.

The book is particularly thorough in explaining the criteria used by bankers and lawyers to distinguish projects that are bank-able from those that are not. It has some good sections, particularly apt for banking professionals, on the intricacies of international law as it impinges on project finance.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable but an introduction only.......2005-10-26

The book is a reasonable introduction to project financing but falls short on many of the pratical details used in balancing risks, which is the essence of project financing.

I was keen to see how the book covered the financing of port projects and I found that the authors summarised a 1998 publication By Drewry shipping without adding any new insights. Indeed the 1998 publication provides more pratical benchmarks and financing options.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Primer for Infrastructure Project Finance Technique.......2003-03-29

Financing Large Projects: Using Project Finance Techniques and Practices by Fouzul Khan, Robert Parra is a very useful primer for project finance practitioners.

This book focuses on the financing of large projects that rely on project finance techniques and practices in order to raise debt. Being in infrastructure financing industry over four (4) years, I faced a tremendous dearth of a good book covering infrastructure financing intricacies. The book has offered knowledge of my much needed felt areas.

The book integrates every essential aspects of issues relating to the financing of large projects, namely, financing, law, engineering, environmental, etc. It also has a detailed description on history of project finance along with origin and development of various instruments.

What a user shall find noteworthy about the book is that it covers different phases of project development, and attributes thereof. Starting from the project conception, the book goes on explaining project negotiation, appraisal, creation and perfection of security over project assets.

The first half of the book describes project origination and early development activities, negotiations with ceding authority and others of project agreements, sources of international finance and credit enhancements, and the sponsor's support required for classic and non-classic deals. The second half discusses the architecture of the typical financial model, due diligence and appraisal process conducted by lenders, scope and content of negotiations related to each of several finance documents, role of derivatives and hedges, and typical issues encountered in structuring a security package.

Finally, the book also appends a very useful project feasibility financial model, which could be customized for use in feasibility analysis of similar projects.

    Book Description

Since the 1970s, the practice of financing major private and public sector capital-intensive projects has shifted to an ever-greater reliance on private funding sources, as opposed to direct financing through the issuance of corporate or government bonds. In the 1990s, these financing practices have undergone further changes with the increasing globalization of capital markets, the growth of derivative instruments, and the rapid increase in information technology that enhances cash-management practices. Today's project financing market is increasingly using sophisticated capital market, bank and agency financing mechanisms as well as using derivative instruments for asset and liability management. Thus, financial market innovations are bringing the once separate fields of project financing and international finance more closely together. This is the first book to treat both topics as an interrelated whole, for contemporary project financing cannot be fully understood without a good working knowledge of the international financial markets that have developed the various financing techniques and funding sources being used. The book provides an in-depth description of cross-border project financing as a technique for financing capital-intensive projects, as well as an overview of certain financing and derivative instruments currently available in the global financial markets.
The first part of the book provides an overview of certain funding and derivative instruments currently used in the international financial markets, including a general overview of financial innovations that have occurred in recent decades. Topics covered include an introduction to the syndicated Euro-credit market; an overview of various marketable debt securities actively used in the international financial markets; an introduction to depositary receipt as an innovative way of raising cross-border equity capital; an elaboration of the derivative instruments most commonly used in the project financing arena, including interest rate, currency and commodity swaps; and finally an overview of banks' off-balance sheet activities as a critical driving force for the participation of banks in the international financial and derivative markets.
The second part of the book provides an in-depth analysis of project financing that concentrates on the financier's perspective. Topics covered include a general overview of the project financing industry; a step-by-step description of a typical cross-border project finance transaction; a description of the main characteristics and advantages of project financing as opposed to more traditional corporate lending practices; an overview of appraisal techniques for assessing project financing; a comprehensive analysis of the different risk management techniques used in project financing for reducing, distributing and hedging risks; and a brief overview of certain limited-resource financing schemes. The book includes a special focus on the various stages of the risk management process for project financing, elaborating on the different stages of risk identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, risk distribution and hedging and insurance. The authors also provide a comprehensive glossary of terms relating to international finance and project financing. This book will fulfill the need for an essential text on project financing as well as a professional reference guide.

      Book Description

In recent years, financial engineering has developed new ways of financing deals based primarily on the capacity of the operations to generate sufficient cash for the repayment of loans or bonds. The business of structured finance has then become an interesting business area for non-financial companies, investment and commercial banks and consultants. In terms of volumes, it shows figures easily comparable to other, more traditional, sources of funding.

This book provides the reader with an analysis of the characteristics of structured finance deals – asset-backed securitization, project finance, structured leasing and leveraged acquisitions – together with updated data on the current state of the international financial markets for these operations.

4 out of 5 stars Calculation error in Chapter 7 ?.......2006-06-18

Is there a calculation error in Chapter 7? The example is for calculating ATCF of Rocky Mountain project. The initial equipment investment of $55M is capitalized with $5M residual value. $5M of the $6M startup cost is also capitalized. However, the depreciation taken over the next 10 years is only $5M [$55M - $5)/10]. The capitalized $5M startup cost seems to be forgotten. Anyone else noticed this?

4 out of 5 stars Good amount of information for non-specialist.......2005-03-02

Coming from a non-finance background, I was pleased with the amount of information that I found in the book. If the information in this book were joined with some case studies or a semester long assignment in creating a financing package for a mock energy project, it would be appropriate classwork for a top MBA program.

One obvious complaint, assuming that the book is not directed at seasoned financial engineers who are already rolling in money, the price is a bit steep for those seeking money for projects in developing countries. A less expensive alternative is to go to the World Bank web site and search for the author's name. There you can find a 300 slide powerpoint display of the book's "highlights". Personally, because of the book's portability and text that expands upon the "highlights" , I thought that the book was worth the price.

To address the issue raised by my peer Amazon book critic as to what actually happens when a project's financial engineers sit down with a country's finance minister and a World Bank loan assessment team behind closed doors, I agree that those chapters are missing. So, if I were like him/her and already adept at financial engineering, I think that I would skip this book and start writing my own entitled "Advanced Financial Engineering for Energy Projects in Emerging Economies".

If someone does write a more advanced book on this subject, I would buy a copy (even at an inflated price) in a heartbeat. Others might also, as this book by Razavi is rapidly becoming dated and the energy crisis in developing countries is just beginning.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1998-10-02

The title held great promise, but as a practitioner with over 18 years experience in power projects and project finance deals both at home and in some pretty difficult countries, this book was a let down. It approaches the subject from a theoretical point of view and it is clear that the author has little first hand experience in negotiating and closing deals.

      Book Description

Is it possible that the insurance and reinsurance industries cannot handle a major catastrophe? Ten years ago, the notion that the overall cost of a single catastrophic event might exceed $10 billion was unthinkable. With ever increasing property-casualty risks and unabated growth in hazard-prone areas, insurers and reinsurers now envision the possibility of disaster losses of $50 to $100 billion in the United States.

Against this backdrop, the capitalization of the insurance and reinsurance industries has become a crucial concern. While it remains unlikely that a single event might entirely bankrupt these industries, a big catastrophe could place firms under severe stress, jeopardizing both policy holders and investors and causing profound ripple effects throughout the U.S. economy.

The Financing of Catastrophe Risk assembles an impressive roster of experts from academia and industry to explore the disturbing yet realistic assumption that a large catastrophic event is inevitable. The essays offer tangible means of both reassessing and raising the level of preparedness throughout the insurance and reinsurance industries.

5 out of 5 stars Essential read about financing catastrophe risk........2000-06-23

This book is an excellent treatment of an issue of increasing importance. As the costs of natural catastrophes continue to increase, the tools available to absorb the increasing costs of loss become more valuable. The book describes the demand for catastrophe insurance protection, the limitations on supply, and alternative mechanisms to shift risk. Of particular interest is the discussion of the capital markets as viable tools to absorb risk. For those concerned with the financing of catastrophe risk, this book is an essential read.

        Book Description

Finance is a necessity for all public or private sector projects. Over the past twenty years, the private sector has increasingly financed projects traditionally considered in the public domain. Under increasing public demand for higher levels of infrastructure services and insufficient public funds, attention has re-focused on private finance for public projects. Changing global trends means more emphasis on infrastructure projects and services procured through concession contracts and its derivatives - Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Build-Own-Operate-Transfer, PFI and Leasing.
