Book Description
While computers and other devices identify each other on networks or the Internet by using unique addresses made up of numbers, humans rely on the Domain Name System (DNS), the distributed database that allows us to identify machines by name. DNS does the work of translating domain names into numerical IP addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services, so that users require little or no knowledge of the system. If you're a network or system administrator, however, configuring, implementing, and maintaining DNS zones can be a formidable challenge. And now, with Windows Server 2003, an understanding of the workings of DNS is even more critical. DNS on Windows Server 20003 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND, updated to document the many changes to DNS, large and small, found in Windows Server 2003. Veteran O'Reilly authors, Cricket Liu, Matt Larson, and Robbie Allen explain the whole system in terms of the new Windows Server 2003, from starting and stopping a DNS service to establishing an organization's namespace in the global hierarchy. Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows Server 2003 tackles the many issues specific to the new Windows environment, including the use of the dnscmd program to manage the Microsoft DNS Server from the command line and development using the WMI DNS provider to manage the name server programmatically. The book also documents new features of the Microsoft DNS Server in Windows Server 2003, including conditional forwarding and zone storage in Active Directory (AD) application partitions. DNS on Windows Server 2003 provides grounding in:
- Security issues
- System tuning
- Caching
- Zone change notification
- Troubleshooting
- Planning for growth
If you're a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows Server 2003 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day. If you're a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet's architecture and inner workings.
Customer Reviews:
Updates are always good........2007-07-30
I was already fimilar with DNS from the first issues of this book. But this new issue does cover Microsoft DNS which I believe is excellent.
More ISP and System Admins nowadays are reliaing on MS DNS because it comes free with Microsoft Servers, high performance, it has a text based like Unix DNS, it is easy to maintain and the big reason is that it's easy to pass on the DNS responsibilities to any lower cost IT staff.
Don't use this book if you are preparing for 70-291........2007-07-25
I just recently bought this book because of the fine reviews people gave.
The reason i bought this book is to get a clearer understanding of DNS related to Server 2003. I don't want to be a paper MCSE so i look voor as
much study material on the subject where i can get my hands on.
To cut corners if you are studying for the 70-291 please buy this book read it and come back here and tell how much it helped you. For me it was
a waste of money. The info can be obtained by smart Google searches.
That was my oppinion now about the book itself.
It starts very good i have to say with the explaination of DNS in an overview. The book is ok until you are getting at chapter 5 of the 16th chapters.
Chapter 5 is about MX records Exhange etc. The chapter is much to brief in my oppinion arround 9 pages or 4 A4 pages.
Chapter 7 is better but after that downhill. I skipped chapters.
Chapter 15 and 16 are again uphill.
To recap my experiences, the Book starts very promising in the first 4 chapters, they walk you through the installation of some DNS servers, and
the strange thing is they leave that path. The stuf gets boring to read over the chapters that follow and it turns out in a dry textbook.
TO end there is an old saying in Holland perhaps english speakers know it also: 'In the land of the blind one eye is King'. Consultants
are being payed to Design and set up in this case DNS solutions, its like shooting in your own foot to write well written books on those subjects.
And thats the problem, i found the official Microsoft 70-291 and the DNS discussed there of a better quality, a big Shame on you guys!!
Matt Larson, Cricket Liu and Robbie Allen.
The book for Windows DNS.......2007-07-06
I got this book coming from a BIND background and wanting to move to Windows DNS (I do have a valid reason). The first few chapters cover DNS background similar to the BIND book. After that it moves on into how to do things in the Windows world. It uses examples that are straight from the BIND book but done in Windows 2003. There are lots of screen shots and clear explanation. One of the really good things, for those coming from a *nix background, are the chapters on running from a command line and using PERL scripts to manage DNS. Overall it is a great book for anyone running DNS on Windows.
Good review.......2007-02-20
Well written book, it needs to be updated for newer operating systems that are now being used. Good examples and illustrations, the book will be a good review or refresher for those that haven't been around DNS in a while.
An absolutely painless way to fill your DNS knowledge gap!.......2006-10-25
I find O'Reilly books to be like Cisco's or Apple's books, in that they place a value on being readable, witty, and scrupulously technical. You will understand DNS on Win2K3 if you read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Not enough depth!.......2006-08-24
If you are looking for indepth explanation of how to exploit different features of Sharepoint then this book is not for you. This book is good if you want and can survive with a high level overview of sharepoint.
If you want to know of things like:
-Branding
-Details of ONet.XML
-How to use FrontPage to edit website.
-Best practices for developing Sharepoint based solutions.
you want a different book.
However this book does have its merits if you are starting with sharepoint and want to get up and running soon. It does have a lot of pointers as to where you can get more detailed information.
I would disagree with most reviews posted on this website which claim that this is a must have book for sharepoint. Use of your discretion is highly recommended.
I returned this book........2006-06-23
I've never returned a book to Amazon before, but I did return this one. I got more out of 10 minutes just using SharePoint than I did going through this book.
Several of the examples didn't even work - don't waste your time.
If you are a web developer, this book is for you.......2006-03-15
I am a web developer and bought this book to learn about SharePoint, which seems to be gaining in popularity.
The book was perfect for me. The first half or so of the book explains what SharePoint can be used for and then takes you through quite a few exercises actually using the tool.
The second half covers a lot of ground focusing on developing web parts and how to program access to SharePoint from various Office applications like Word and Excel and also .Net.
The text is easy to follow (and not verbose), works very well with the numerous illustrations and everything is explained clearly and straight to the point.
If you are a web developer, this book is for you.
Best Book on WSS 2.0.......2006-01-06
This book focuses on WSS and gets you up and running quickly. There are extensive examples, all of which work as described. The info on integrating with Office (chapters 4, 5, and 6) are the best resources on the subject available in my opinion.
The web part chapters (8 and 9) take you further in 60 pages than the entire Rational Guide (which I returned). The built web part samples are available from the author's site, as is an "Ask Jeff" forum where you can get answers if you get stuck. More authors should do that!
Not Useful.......2006-01-06
I purchased the book to help with some web parts development. The part on deploying web parts is just patently incorrect. Even following the author's instructions step by step, I still had problem deploying my web part. The worst part of it is that the book's content simply doesn't match up with what happens in Sharepoint. Perhaps the books was written with an earlier, different version of Sharepoint but it doesn't match up with Microsoft Windows Sharepoint Services 2003. In fact, compared to other sources, the instructions given appear to be missing a step or two.

Must have for AD support folks........2006-05-27
I use this book and also the author's AD cookbook daily to help with supporting our global Active Directory server infrastructure. This is an absolutely indispensable reference.
Very helpful to admins / IT support.......2006-03-13
We're a software engineering company, and I maintain our internal servers (6-7 servers) as well as provide customer support on our products. A lot of that involves asking for information from the customer - and this book helps in putting together scripts that I can send out that will send back information to us that avoids us asking to exchange 5 emails to get the same result. Anything that saves my time - and our customers time - is worthy of purchasing. Well done, well organised book - and the author returns emails!
Start here, it is all here!.......2006-03-04
This book has a sound foundation for managing a windows 2003 server. The chapters are logically organized. I used some of the examples in the book to migrate some file shares in my network from unix to windows, the book was there for the rescue (the fact that the author has a solid windows/unix experience makes this book even more attractive). The solutions in this book include windows scripting, an area that is seldom talked about in windows literature. If you are serious about managing a windows 2003 server competently then you want to have this book in your arsenal.
Great Book........2005-12-14
This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Windows Servers. Whether you are new or experienced, this book is an invaluable tool.
Great Resource for Admins.......2005-12-11
This book is not one for beginners who don't know what they are doing and are looking for detailed explanations of topics. This is made purely for the admin who needs to get a job done, and quickly, and knows already what they are trying to accomplish. I really appreacieate all the scripting examples and also how Rob puts in some great building blocks for scripting (like how to redirect your output to an excel file rather than just the usual Wscript.Echo output that you can redirect to a text file or to stdout). Great Job Robbie!!
Book Description
How to Cheat at Windows Systems Administrators using Command line scripts teaches system administrators hundreds of powerful, time-saving tips for automating daily system administration tasks using Windows command line scripts.
With every new version of Windows, Microsoft is trying to ease the administration jobs by adding more and more layers of graphical user interface (GUI) or configuration wizards (dialog boxes). While these wizards are interactive and make the administrators job easier, they are not always the most convenient and efficient way to accomplish the everyday administration tasks. These wizards are time consuming and, at times, may seem a bit confusing. The purpose of the book is to teach administrators how to use command-line scripts to complete everyday administration jobs, solve recurring network problems and at the same time improve their efficiency.
*Provides system administrators with hundreds of tips, tricks, and scripts to complete administration tasks more quickly and efficiently.
*No direct competition for a core tool for Windows administrators.
*Builds on success of other books in the series including How to Cheat at Managing Windows Small Business Server 2003 and How to Cheat at Managing Microsoft Operations Manager 2005.

Discover the Windows command line.......2006-10-07
"There's more than one way to skin a cat", as the old saying goes.
Everything, and more, that can be done using the graphical, mouse-driven, interfaces provided by Windows, can be accomplished by using the command-line. What's more, these tasks can get scripted and be automated!
This book covers the basics of the command-line and how to go about writing batch files (or scripts).
After these fundamentals are covered, commands in various areas of system, domain and network administration are discussed. From configuring and using the task-scheduler, to performance, to managing disks, to AD administration, to network trouble-shooting, one is ready to tackle any administrative task from the command line.
The book also contains a very handy Appendix for those MS-DOS old-timers amongst us. The Appendix covers the MS-DOS commands no longer supported in Windows XP and those not supported in Windows 2003.
A final note is that this book was written with Windows XP and Windows 2003 in mind.

Book Description
This book is the Windows Server version of the classic TCP/IP Network Administration. Like the book that inspired it, Windows Server 2003 Network Administration provides an overview of the essential TCP/IP protocols, and explains how to properly manage and configure the services based on these protocols. Any skilled network administrator knows that understanding how things work is as important as knowing how things are done. This book is the essential guide to both, containing everything a network administrator needs to exchange information via the Internet, and to build effective reliable networks.
This must-read guide is divided into three distinct sections: fundamental concepts, tutorial, and reference. The first three chapters are a basic discussion of the network protocols and services. This discussion provides the fundamental concepts necessary to understand the rest of the book. The remaining chapters provide a how-to tutorial for planning, installing and configuring various important network services. The book concludes with three appendixes that are technical references for various configuration options. Content specifics include how to:
- Install, configure, and manage a Microsoft DNS and Windows DHCP server
- Control remote communications with Microsoft RRAS software
- Protect hosts with Internet Connection Firewalls
- Configure Internet and Intranet Web services with IIS
- Design proper security into your network
- Troubleshoot the network when problems develop
After you've turned the final page of Windows Server 2003 Network Administration, you'll not only understand how to network, but also why it needs to be done.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Net Admin Book.......2006-09-15
Oh my, this book is just incredible. It is the most comprehensive book I found covering many advanced networking technologies including routing and firewalls. One thing so cool is able to understand comparatively the firewall features of routing and NAT functionality of RRAS, IPSec filters, TCP/IP filtering, ICF, and Windows Firewall. I wasn't able to find such material in any other books.
There's a lot of great material covering RADIUS technology of IAS, including wireless security with WPA, PEAP with TLS (certificates from Certificate Authority). The book has coverage of other topics including DHCP, DNS, Windows Time Service (NTP), IIS, etc.
Overall the coverage of network administration is just excellent. It is by far the best book I found covering IAS and RRAS technologies with Windows Server 2003. I found it refreshing to have advanced coverage of the new Windows Firewall, which is something Windows security books don't do.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-05-17
Do you need to configure a network service on a Windows server? If you do, then this book is for you! Authors Craig Hunt and Roberta Bragg, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides practical, detailed network information for the Windows system administrator.
Hunt and Bragg, begin by providing you with a quick history of TCP/IP, a description of the structure of the protocol architecture, and a basic explanation of how the protocols function. Then, the authors describe addressing and how data passes through a network to reach the proper destination. They continue by discussing the relationship betwen clients and server systems, as well as the various services that are central to the function of a modern network. Next, the authors cover the basic "client" configuration required by all systems running TCP/IP. Then, they describe how to install, configure, and maintain a Windows DHCP server. They also describe how to install, configure, and manage a Microsoft DNS server. Then, they focus on the symbiotic relationship between TCP/IP and Active Directory. The authors continue by describing how to install and configure the RRAS software that permits a Windows server to run a variety of TCP/IP routing protocols and to provide the security protocols needed to create encrypted connections. They then discuss the different implementations of the native Windows firewall. The authors also describe the installation and configuration of an IAS to provide centralized authentication, audit, and authorization services for RADIUS clients. Next, they provide the background that is necessary to understand, install, and configure IPSec. Then, the authors describe how to install, configure, and manage the Internet Information Server software. They also describe how to design proper security into your network and how to understand the overall security framework within which the network resides. Finally, the authors tell you what to do when something goes wrong.
This most excellent book is about building and maintaining your own network based on Windows servers. Furthermore, this dynamic book strives to find the correct balance of theory and practice, so that you understand what needs to be done and why it is done.
Revised, expanded edition addresses numerous networks.......2006-04-14
Craig Hunt and Roberta Bragg's WINDOWS SERVER 2003 NETWORK ADMINISTRATION: BUILDING AND MAINTAINING PROBLEM-FREE WINDOWS NETWORKS is a recommended reference for programmers: it's been revised and expanded to address the numerous networks supported by windows Server 2003 and to address common security issues, and includes chapters on protocol, firewalls and network security, TCP/IP troubleshooting, and much more. Serious programmers working in the Windows Server 2003 environment will find it should be close at hand to explain tools and techniques basic to administration issues
The Meat is in the last half of the book.......2006-02-12
Mr. Hunt and Ms. Bragg have produced a very acceptable book on Microsoft Networking Technologies. However, if you are looking for depth in TCP/IP (the protocol suite) on the Microsoft platform of OSes, this isn't the book for you. Craig and Roberta spend enough time and go to just enough depth to allow the reader to get the value of the 'real meat' of this book - the second half that deals with the installable services and servers, as well as those that are available natively in the OS. If you are looking for real 'nuts and bolts' depth on TCP/IP on the Microsoft platform, the best on that I have found (Sorry, Thomas and Joe...) is Niall Mansfield's "Practical TCP/IP" by another publisher. (Do a quick search - you'll find it.)
That being said, Hunt and Bragg dive deep into operation and best practice on:
Routing and Remote Access Service
Windows Host Firewalls
RADIUS using IAS
IPSec
These above 4 subjects are worth the price of the book. I'm less impressed with the treatment of DNS and IIS. These are huge subjects, and just can't be dealt with effectively in 50 - 60 pages. I suppose that this is the reason why the book "DNS on Windows Server 2003" by Cricket Liu, Matt Larson, and Robbie Allen - also published by O'Reilly - exists. And, too - this is likely why there are whole books dedicated partially or completely to IIS 6.0.
All in all - Craig and Roberta do a fine job with this book. Roberta, being the preeminent mistress of Security geek on Windows, and Craig having years and years of experience in communications and TCP/IP - both can be considered experts in the subject area of this book. This book is a good one for the average to more advanced Administrator that is looking to excel in the field of Network services - and add that Network Design Engineer moniker, as they will likely only need a primer on TCP/IP and DNS. This book will get them on the road to the practical experience that will help one attain the status of Network Services engineer.

Customer Reviews:
Agree with the others.......2007-01-24
Amazingly lazy effort. Some of the data, like basic security concepts, are universal (the definition of a "threat" is the same, regardless of OS) but after that this book is... well, saying it's a "retread" is being nice.
The screenshots in this book even still refer to Windows 2000. Chapter 3 has a very nice "System Properties" screenshot that says "Windows 2000, Service Pack 3". Going by that, it's not even completely up to date on Windows 2000.
If you're looking for basic security concepts, this book should be alright... but there are better options (like anything Security+ related). Unfortunately, this was my first Sybex book... and will probably be my last.
Outdated and horribly written.......2006-08-25
As mentioned in the previous review, most of the text and diagrams reference Windows 2000, despite the book being titled for Server 2003. After using Sybex books to pass the core requirements for my MCSA cert, I was eager to use this one for my elective requirement. However, the book is written in a very non-technical manner; the text as well as the review questions are vague and even incorrect at times. I have found a few obviously incorrect statements / questions that will be submitted to Sybex as errata. For once I'm glad I purchased the Microsoft Press book on this subject.
Copy/Pasted Server 2000 book (barely for 2003).......2005-02-02
Although the book has a 2004 copyright, much of the info is dated. Tables are referred to as for Server 2003, but the tables were obviously made for Server 2000 and simply copied into this book. Table 3.1 is a perfect example, referenced as the command line switches for the mbsacli.exe command, yet the table is titled HFNetChk Switches (the authors couldn't be bothered to do anything except copy/paste this info in). This is a common thread throughout this book, obviously NOT written for 2003, but a slightly updated (making references to 2003) security book for Server 2000.
