      These articles originated as papers from a recent meeting so that some may be found on the web. However,the articles are extended and stringently reviewed revisions of the original papers the collection itself is of great value since it amounts to a whole more than the sum. The introductory article is not just a precis of the contents, it does an excellent job of placing discrete event modeling and simulation technology within the context of AI, software engineering, and systems engineering.

      Contrary to one reviewer, the book cannot be derived in any way from what's available on the web. If you are interested in new paradigms for technology, it belongs on your bookshelf.

      My copy of this book is barely readable. Numerous parts of the text are missing. The printing is just missing here and there on the pages. Beware this edition. It is unfortunate since the content appears excellent.

      This book provides a very good introduction to discrete-event simulation. The authors start out by providing several simple examples in areas such as queueing and inventory systems, as well as reliability. After the first few chapters the reader gets a sense of what simulation represents and why it is done. In later chapters they score high marks in introducing more advanced issues, such as probability models, random number and random variate generators, queueing theory, and input modeling.

      In closing, the book makes for a very good junior or senior-level introduction to simulation, and I especially am thankful that the presentation was made independent of any simulation package. Instead it focuses on those things that any good simulation package/language should have (e.g. random-number generators, built-in objects for customers and servers, statistical support for evaluating hypotheses about collected data, etc.).

      Banks revised his great book with updated simulation package and information. Several new issues, such as, tools/softwares, random-variable generation, simulation termination, how to use Simulation to analysis and design computer system, many downloadable examples. Sufficient theories, to understand Simulation, are given, for instance, the Statistics and Queueing theories. Two chapters are dedicated for random-number generation. One chapter is dedicated for verification and validation of simulation models. Although it's only one chapter, several references are given for further study. IE or logistic practioner will enjoy since one chapter is for manufacturing and material handling system (wow!). Very good reference and practice.

      This book brings a very complete explanation about what Discrete Event System Simulation is. From the very beginning, they introduce what Simulation is by means of simple examples that you can manage by hand. They also give a comprehensive explanation about how to determine the apropiate distribution functions to use in the simulation. And how to statistically analyze the simulation results. The book also include a comprehensive brochure of different simulation languages.

        The two unique benefits of Concurrent and Comparative Discrete Event Simulation are: speed, which is usually 1000 to 10 000 times faster than conventional discrete event simulation; and methodology, which permits the concurrent/comparative simulation of many thousands of experiments. One idea is that a one-for-many experiment, called the reference, is simulated in its entirety, while all others are simulated only where they differ from the reference. A second idea extends the first one; many one-for-many experiments will be significantly more efficient than only one experiment. These two ideas result in tremendous efficiencies, permitting the concurrent simulation of tens of thousands of experiments. The material in the book covers a vast application area in the scientific and business world. For example, in the design experimentation of nuclear power plant operations, many scenarios can be simulated to derive desirable designs or safe operating procedures. Concurrent fault simulation is already a mature technique in the computer aided design of digital systems. Concurrent/Comparative Simulation (CCS) of several instruction sets for a computer can help a designer in making performance tradeoffs. One of the most powerful future applications for CCS/MDCCS (Concurrent and Comparative Simulation/Multi-Domain Concurrent and Comparative Simulation) will be in the testing and debugging of computer programs.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Anti-air warfare (AAW) has been a top priority for the world's navies in developing tactics and choosing the most effective ship defense systems. Analyses of such extremely complex system behaviors require the utilization of innovative tools that are flexible, scalable and reusable. This thesis develops a model as an analysis tool to measure the effectiveness of radar and IR sensors in AAW area defense. The model is designed to support reuse, provide easy model configuration, flexibility and scale changes. A component-based simulation approach was adopted for this model using the JAVA (Trade mark) programming language to provide the necessary scalability and flexibility. The MODKIT approach was used as the architecture of component designs and SlMKIT, was used for discrete event simulation purposes. In addition, a small combat component library was constructed for future research. To demonstrate the analysis capability of the model a comparative analysis was conducted for radar and IR sensors in AAW area defense. The results of the simulation runs indicate that the model provides a good capability for aiding decision making, including effectiveness analysis, parameter sensitivity analysis, and exploratory analysis.
