In closing, the book makes for a very good junior or senior-level introduction to simulation, and I especially am thankful that the presentation was made independent of any simulation package. Instead it focuses on those things that any good simulation package/language should have (e.g. random-number generators, built-in objects for customers and servers, statistical support for evaluating hypotheses about collected data, etc.).

The two unique benefits of Concurrent and Comparative Discrete Event Simulation are: speed, which is usually 1000 to 10 000 times faster than conventional discrete event simulation; and methodology, which permits the concurrent/comparative simulation of many thousands of experiments. One idea is that a one-for-many experiment, called the reference, is simulated in its entirety, while all others are simulated only where they differ from the reference. A second idea extends the first one; many one-for-many experiments will be significantly more efficient than only one experiment. These two ideas result in tremendous efficiencies, permitting the concurrent simulation of tens of thousands of experiments. The material in the book covers a vast application area in the scientific and business world. For example, in the design experimentation of nuclear power plant operations, many scenarios can be simulated to derive desirable designs or safe operating procedures. Concurrent fault simulation is already a mature technique in the computer aided design of digital systems. This book introduces the application of the Java programming language in discrete-event simulation. In addition, the fundamental concepts and practical simulation techniques for modeling different types of systems to study their general behavior and their performance are introduced. The approaches applied are the process interaction approach to discrete-event simulation and object-oriented modeling. Java is used as the implementation language and UML as the modeling language. The first offers several advantages compared to C++, the most important being thread handling, graphical user interfaces (GUI), and Web computing. The second language, UML (Unified Modeling Language), is the standard notation used today for modeling systems as a collection of classes, class relationships, objects, and object behavior. The book concentrates on object-oriented modeling and implementation aspects of simulation models using Java and practical simulation techniques. In addition, the book illustrates the dynamic behavior of systems using the various simulation models as case studies.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Anti-air warfare (AAW) has been a top priority for the world's navies in developing tactics and choosing the most effective ship defense systems. Analyses of such extremely complex system behaviors require the utilization of innovative tools that are flexible, scalable and reusable. This thesis develops a model as an analysis tool to measure the effectiveness of radar and IR sensors in AAW area defense. The model is designed to support reuse, provide easy model configuration, flexibility and scale changes. A component-based simulation approach was adopted for this model using the JAVA (Trade mark) programming language to provide the necessary scalability and flexibility. The MODKIT approach was used as the architecture of component designs and SlMKIT, was used for discrete event simulation purposes. In addition, a small combat component library was constructed for future research. To demonstrate the analysis capability of the model a comparative analysis was conducted for radar and IR sensors in AAW area defense. The results of the simulation runs indicate that the model provides a good capability for aiding decision making, including effectiveness analysis, parameter sensitivity analysis, and exploratory analysis.
