Disapointing.......2007-08-23
If you know anything about Cinema 4D you will be very disappointed. It is really a First time beginner's book. The only good thing is that it goes through different parts of the software, like rig animation and UVs.
What really bothered me is that the chapters are huge, and uses pages and pages to explaining little details. But as i said, if you are the real beginner, you will enjoy it.
Lost in translation.......2007-08-15
The things they have you build look really cool, but the big wrench in the works for this book is its sloppy, inaccurate translation to English. You really have to move through it super-slowly, watching for potential mistakes. Having said that, I did get through the first tutorial on modeling a G5 Mac, but only at a snail's pace because of the translation.
Another complaint -- they continually reference screen-shots that aren't on the same page, so for instance, they say "Do this, like in fig. 8.5", and fig. 8.5 is on the next page, while directly above the instructions is fig. 8.4. The whole book is like that, with the pictures lagging one or two pages behind the text.
If you're just getting started in C4D, I'd look elsewhere.
Cinema 4D 10 Workshop.......2007-07-10
Im a motion graphics designer and decided to upgrade my knowledge using 3D and found out that Cinema 4D is easy to use. I tried and downloaded several tutorials in the internet and most of them are very helpful and I learned the basics in Cinema 4D. However, there are some aspects of this tool that is quite hard to find in the web (advance topics)and so I decided to purchase a book.
I found this book and I was quite disappointed in several of its projects/tutorials. The steps are not well-written. Usually, most of them are shortcuts, it doesn't give you the step-by-step procedure on how to accomplish a task. Perhaps, if you're an advanced user of Cinema 4D you would understand it, but if you're a beginnner, then you would have a hard time accomplishing the projects.
Now Im planning to buy another cinema 4d book the one written by anne powers.I hope that this one would be really helpful and easy to understand.
almost satisfied.......2007-06-27
Although the tutorials are very good, they are very hard to follow, there are no numbered tutorials, they are made in paragraphs, so you find yourself reading an entire paragraph which at the end you already know.
Some important little details are sometimes forgotten so you spend a long time going back and experimenting until your result looks like the result in the book.
Good book for modeller.......2007-05-12
The print quality is very good. Nice tutorials for modeller. Lacks any in depth information for animator/special fx. Pity...

Excellent book.......2007-06-08
The book is VERY helpful and easy to read. Tom is also very active on the Apple boards so it's actual very easy to find the author of the book should you have a question not covered in the book.
The One To Get You Started.......2007-05-07
After collecting five or more books, manuals, and videos, this is the one that got me into seriously using FCE!
Tom Wolsky Nails It!!!.......2007-03-14
I have been using FCE 3.5 since it came out and thought I knew something about the software. After reading not even 100 pages I learned that more to learn was very possible. His presentation is straight forward and easy to understand. I wondered what took so long for a book on FCE 3.5 would come out and am glad this one did. FCE3.5 is a powerful software and this book helps you get the most out of that power.

A sequel to Steven Katz's Film Directing Shot by Shot, this book tackles specific problems of staging cinematic scenes. How should directors shoot scenes in confined spaces, such as small rooms or the interior of a car, in large open spaces, or with a number of characters involved in busy dialogue? As in his previous book, Katz addresses these problems by storyboarding hypothetical scenes for the camera, laying out a drawing of each shot in the sequence for readers to study. As a bonus, the book is peppered with interviews about creating shot sequences that Katz conducted with a number of professional filmmakers, including Allen Daviau, Ralph Singleton, and John Sayles.
Book Description
Practical guide addresses problems encountered when staging and blocking scenes.
Customer Reviews:
A Workshop in a Book!.......2004-07-13
Cinematic Motion, by Steven Katz, published by Michael Wiese Productions, is another one of those absolutely must-have books for serious filmmakers. The subtitle, A Workshop for Staging Scenes, is just what this valuable resource and reference manual is...a workshop in a book! It's unique in that it is written from the film director's viewpoint. The focus of the book is on creative visual staging of each scene, and the storyboards and diagrams are clear, consistent and workable. Katz shows you how to choreograph scenes and create illusions, as needed, through blocking, camera movement, moving an actor or actors in a scene, and staging, in scenes with confined spaces up to large spaces, interiors and exteriors. The interviews with director John Sayles (The Secret of Roan Inish; Passion Fish; City of Hope) and production manager Ralph Singleton (Pet Sematary II; Clear and Present Danger; Last Man Standing) are very informative and helpful for the beginning filmmaker and the experienced filmmaker alike.
Including interactive online 3D storyboards.......2004-06-06
Now in an updated second edition, Film Directing Cinematic Motion is an extensive how-to manual especially for aspiring and practicing directors to fine-tuning the art of creating a personal camera style, piecing together extended sequence shots, make the most of digital technology for visualization and script breakdown, and much more. Including interactive online 3D storyboards for hands-on practice, Film Directing Cinematic Motion is extremely down-to-earth in its presentation, offering direct Q & A with an expert, extremely detailed situational examples, frame-by-frame diagrams to illustrate complex points, and much more. Highly recommended for anyone involved in the field, whether amateur or professional.
Very clear and useful..........2002-10-10
...as well as "shot by shot" from same writer. Very nice explained, b&w illustrated and easy to understand. Perfect guidebook for beginners and also indy filmmakers.
Clears Away the Cobwebs!.......2002-05-17
This fine, detailed & user-friendly book opens up a director's view of the world of cinematic movement & how it relates to good story-telling through film. Staging scenes, blocking, camera movement, choreography of scene movent, reverse shots, camera angles, tracking, exterior & interior shooting, staging multiple characters in a scene...it's all here, with drawings that clearly illustrate the informative text.
A practical how-to guide with plenty of examples.......2001-04-03
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to compose better pictures of any kind. This unusual book takes a "through-the-lens" approach to presenting ideas about how to compose pictures. This is a refreshing break from abstract "art-babble" discussions that offer the reader little practical guidance about where to point the camera. In addition to video and film, still photographers will find this book especially interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written. Lacks depth.......2004-05-30
This is a poorly written book. The exercises supposedly on the CD are not there. The book gives a flavour of the app. but concentrates too much on the audio aspects of Vegas. There is better information avaialble online.
Great Book.......2004-02-08
In a short period of time this book has given me the tools I need to know to use Vegas effectively.
I recommend this book to any person using this program. Douglas does a good job of balancing the audio and video aspect of creating a project with Vegas. The book is easy to read and I found his examples helpful.
Great Book!
This Eagle Soars!.......2003-12-31
I've had the privilage of attending two of Douglas Spotted Eagle's seminars, in particular with Vegas. This book carries many of the topics he covered, but with greater detail. One of the great things is the fact he points out issues in hardware that you need to be aware of, for an optimal setup. He also points out preference settings that normally would be missed or never thought of, for new NLE / Vegas users.
All in all you will find lots of great tips and general details on how to use Vegas.
Douglas has always been consistantly generous with his time and knowledge of the NLE and Audio world of software and hardware products by being active on various forums, answering simplest of questions to the noggin buster questions.
I heartily recommend this book!
Solid resource for both new and experienced Vegas users.......2003-11-28
I wouldn't have bought this book if I hadn't been to a few of the author's seminars and seen him as an exceptional teacher. He gave as much in those seminars as it was possible for anybody to do in a seminar format, and it was all based on working experience.
Even after using Vegas for more than a year, I found a lot to learn in this book. The author is very thorough, and he gives a thorough knowledge and real understanding of each area. This saves a lot of time in the end for both the novice and the professional.
As has been noted by many, people will rate a video or film with "bad picture quality but good sound" far higher than one with "great picture but bad audio". The people in a movie theatre are called an "audience" for a reason, and Douglas covers the sound aspects of video post production really well from a long background also in professional audio (in 64 pages out of 404).
The author's superior teaching skills combined with his long term experience as both a video and audio producer make this book a must-have for anybody using Vegas regardless of skill level.
I would even recommend this book to those who use other NLEs, as many of the explanations and tips in this book apply also to them and aren't available in easily understandable form anywhere else.
Each area in the book is illustrated with many photographs and sample files, so you can really understand what is going on.
Importantly, the author also offers a good editing workflow to get the best quality from your source materials with minimal effort.
I consider this to be a must-have resource for anybody using Vegas.
Even the seasoned user can learn a lot, and any reader new to video editing gets a solid base for working with this very powerful and very "addictive" software.
It's the Bible on Video Editing with Vegas.......2003-11-27
I bought this book because I knew of Douglas' knowledge from visiting the forums he hosts. Not only is he very knowledgeable about video editing in general, and Vegas 4 in particular, but he has a gift for sharing his knowledge in a way that is clear and concise. His writing is easy to follow and the book holds true to its "workshop" spirit. Even though I was experienced with Vegas and understood a lot of the topics in this book already, I was not let down because I gained a lot of insight into why things work the way they do, and learned new tricks and ways of doing things from someone who has been at this many more years than I have. It was refreshing to have a chapter dedicated to audio because other books on video often overlook this. Douglas understands that audio is a big part of the video experience and Vegas has audio tools that are second to none.
One of the great things about this book is the accompanying CD with all the examples. I followed through each chapter by playing with the accompanying examples and spent several hours experimenting with what I had just learned before moving on to the next chapter. This is the ultimate way to get the most of this book. Read it at your PC and try things as Douglas explains them. Just like you would be doing hands-on exercises in a real workshop/classroom setting. This book is packed with information from setting up your system, through multi-track compositing. If you'd rather watch Douglas teach some of what's in the book, you can always buy his 4 DVD set. (I have it and it's outstanding too)
As you might expect, a book rated beginner-intermediate has a lot of ground to cover. This book shows you some of the basics of how to capture and edit on a timeline, add titles and effects, through topics like chroma key (green screen), multi-track compositing, bump mapping, etc. It's a lot to cover but Douglas does a great job of it. If you're an absolute beginner and feel a bit lost, I would suggest also getting a book like "The Little Digital Video Book by Michael Rubin" to get you started understanding the basics of digital video in general. Then use Douglas' book to apply that to Vegas. He will take you step-by-step along the way.
You should also understand that this book only scratches the surface of what Vegas can do so I hope Douglas gets the opportunity to make a follow-on book that covers more advanced topics. The best part is that Douglas is very approachable and you can always ask him questions on the DMN forums (he goes by the nickname SPOT). If you don't understand something in the book, just ask him on the forum. How many books offer that kind of support? I highly recommend this book to anyone who is using Vegas as their NLE and want to get the most out of it.

Book Description
This is a practical introduction to the basic principles, structures and processes of writing plays. Beginning with simple concepts and exercises, this book gradually builds in complexity, until the reader is writing his or her one act play.
Writing plays is unique because feedback, alternative approaches and discussion spur creativity. This book encourages this and thereby encourages the reader to write. The reader will discover how stage plays differ from screenplays, novels and television. The book also describes how autobiographical materials are transformed into playable parts, and how characters are moved by action. `Playwriting: The first workshop' gives readers the necessary background to begin working on their first play.
Captures the workshop experience through writing, analyzing and testing plays.
Contains synopsis and analysis of several well-known plays, such as `The Dining Room'.
Each chapter provides study questions and exercises that reinforce important concepts.

An Excellent Book for the Aspiring Playwright.......2004-10-09
This book is amazing. Anyone who is interested in writing plays must read this book. The author walks you through the steps of playwriting and gives you critiqued examples to help illustrate her lesson. A top notch guide to playwriting.

Customer Reviews:
Good review but very poor editing.......2006-02-06
I'm posting this review after making it through the first 4 chapters, as I think that this is usually the point of no return when you decide if you can stick with a software book or toss it on the pile of good intentions. The reading can be a bit tedious at times since the author mentions many items at the start that you will get to "later." Part of this stems from the fact that FCE is a very complex program with a million functions so I can understand the difficulty of trying to reduce the complexity.
However, be forewarned that the book is lacking a good glossary and the author throws in jargon in many spots without a thorough explanation. A good example is in a tip box in the third chapter that describes the different ways to break up your video. Just as the author is describing how to cut video, he throws in a blurb about using a ripple delete without telling the reader what this is. Ironically, the term is in bold text, leading one to think that it could be a good glossary entry or should be listed in the index in the back when unfortunately neither is the case. Be ready to Google a lot of terms as you work through this book and hit the Apple discussion boards. My other critical point at this stage in the book is that several steps are re-hased too often as if the author assumes you have closed down windows between lessons and are starting over again.
Lastly, whoever was lead editor on this book needs a thorough lashing, as there are many silly mistakes (e.g. pointing out a feature on the far left of a screen when it is in fact on the far right) that should have been caught before this book went to press.
Not worth it.......2005-12-09
I bought this book on the basis of the positive reviews, and boy, do I regret it. This was very little help and is written in a schizophrenic, haphazard form that is maddening. Example: right after he has you load up the first lesson, he goes off on long explanations of functions that he then says will be used in later chapters, not that one. Then he gets back to the lesson - supposedly - and goes off explaining other controls. Finally, the chapter ends and YOU'VE NEVER EVEN USED THE LESSON! He tells you to close it up and start importing your own material.
And, as stated before, there are many typos, or worse, errors like telling you to use the button on the right when he really means to say left, so it's confusing and frustrating. I used to tutor English at university level and if this had come across my desk I would have considered it a rough draft. Even from a pure logic standpoint, it's a jumble. If you're a beginner to Final Cut Express, stay away from this one!
Editing with Final Cut Express.......2005-10-02
After making a few home movies with iMovie, I decided I wanted to have more options for transitions, compositing, and titling. Final Cut Express has been a great upgrade from iMovie. The controls were quite daunting at first, so I purchased a training DVD that didn't work well for me. I then purchased Final Cut Express For Dummies and that was great for learning the basics. Wanting to do more I ordered the FCE 2 Editing Workshop. Tom Wolsky does a fine job of explaining all the nuances of this great program. It's nice when the authors and experts explain things in a way that assumes you know little of terminology and compression and all the computer skills that they have. I've already used many of the techniques to improve my movies. When I upgrade to Final Cut Pro, I will be buying his book for that program as well.
Save your money.......2005-09-11
Except for the little chat (on the DVD included) about how FCE differs from iMovie, there is not much quality in this book. The video footage included is awful. There are many typos, and the index is VERY poor. (Look up "Sequence.") This book was so bad, I purchased another title -- "Final Cut Expess Solutions" by Jason and David Teague to learn FCE. It's a much better book. I wish someone like Wolsky and/or the Teagues would make a good video about using FCE -- similar to the tutorial that came with my copy of FCE.
Great book gets you started, plus a wonderful author to help you out of tough spots.......2005-09-03
Not only is this one of the best titles on the market for getting you into the nitty gritty of Final Cut Express, it is written by a man who is clearly devoted to teaching the product. Just today I was on Apple's help forum trying to solve a problem that I couldn't find the answer for in his or any of the other books I have. It turned out the solution was simple, but it was such a nice surprise that Tom Wolsky himself (author of this book) was the one to respond!! Looking through Apple's and other web based forums on video editing I found that he devotes quite a bit of time to selflessly helping out people with questions that range from the simple (mine) to the very complex and particular solutions. Combine this with the online expertise from Wolsky and many others who are incredibly helpful, and you are off to an excellent start editing!

Authors Comments.......2007-08-17
I am the author of this book, and as some of the reviews indicate, I'm horribly embarassed by the quality of editing that this book received. I assure you that the manuscripts turned in are not what ended up on paper.
This is the reason I chose to not write a Vegas 7 Editing Workshop book, because of how this book was treated.
Please note that the majority of the reviews found here are regarding typographical errors, and at least one of the reviews here is significantly exaggerated, in my opinion.
My apologies to those that felt slighted by the typographical errors in the book. Although the publisher hired an editor to edit the book (which I did not see in galley or blue-line form), I am solely responsible for any errors, typographical or factual.
Vegas 6 Editing Workshop - a good read!.......2007-04-06
I have been using Vegas now for about a year, and had no formal training in editing before that. When I discovered someone had written a book which explained a lot of the in's and out's of it, I bought it in the hopes I could expand my knowledge and experience.
I did the right thing! This book is chock full of goodies, and I know I have only scratched the surface. The accompanying DVD is just what the doctor ordered! It is now next to my computer at work, to use as my "bible" for Sony Vegas, and, I bring it home every night to try new stuff out.
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in gaining new insight into Sony Vegas, as well as editing in general. I found it useful and I am sure you will too. Happy editing !!!!
Not written by a teacher NOR reviewed by a proofreader.......2007-03-25
The 3 rating is very generous.
Although the author may know how to use SONY VEGAS 6, he certainly isn't crystal clear about telling the rest of us how to do it.
The book is very poorly organized and not well written. It's the kind of thing that appears to have been written by an artist, not a teacher.
Learning from it requires deciphering what the man has written. A co-author with instructional design expertise should have been used.
Some examples given are visually hideous or not at all worthwhile.
Some print samples in the color section are not captioned at all.
The included CD is helpful.
Not for beginners-good for those who need to ramp up.......2006-12-13
I'd recommend absolute beginners cut your teeth on Windows Movie Maker or iMovie or similar entry level app. Get some successes and gain a comfort level with the workflow and basic editing techniques. Later, graduate to Vegas, Premiere or Final Cut for more advanced capabilities.
Video editing (like you see in TV) requires a fair amount of learning. As a result this book is not geared for beginners, as the app IMO is not for beginners either. If you are determined, go for it, it's a great creative outlet!
Even with Vegas 7 release, this book is still very relevant and worthwhile if you want to get full use out of Vegas. DSE's knowledge goes beyond the manual. He helps explain WHY, and what tool to use, which the manual does not. The book is right by my side during sessions and it's a great reference.
As for the book, yes does need a good proofreader and some of the illustrations could be ommitted - all fair enough comments. What is off base are complaints about the price. Apparently they have not bought any technical books lately. Keep in mind the years of specialized knowledge you are getting... it's really a bargain.
Vegas 6 Video Edit Manual (alias workshop).......2006-11-10
A solid get you up and running manual. There are some typos and awkwardly worded bits but they are few.
The key to Vegas 6 isn't just how to use it but what makes Vegas very different. Vegas is SOUND EDITING which has taken on video. Rather than video based editing with some sound capability. The ability to illustrate a well constructed sound track on a defined time line with images (still & video) is at the heart of it. The manual takes its time getting to this defining difference but then is thorough.
Book Description
Video Production Workshop is the first book written to be accessible and appealing to a younger, digitally savvy audience interested in learning the full range of skills involved in planning and executing a video project. It introduces all the digital tools and basic techniques in sequence for readers to build proficiency and gain a well-rounded mastery of the art and craft of video production. Author Tom Wolsky begins with lessons in video editing and camera handling, and then moves on to scripting and storyboarding a production. Readers then step through a series of exercise projects. Separate chapters explore how to light different types of scenes as well as how to obtain well-recorded sound. The book is designed both for independent students as well as for classroom use, and it includes lessons on video journalism and its rights, responsibilities, and ethics. Related techniques for interviewing and working in a live studio are also presented. The book concludes with lessons in post-production techniques, especially motion graphics and special effects. The companion DVD is packed with DV footage for projects, plus demo plug-ins and free software.

Not a resource you will return to........2006-04-04
When I purchase a book like this, I am always hoping that it will be a one-stop, exhaustive resource for the application. A lofty goal? Maybe. However, this text falls utterly short of providing an in-depth look at Premiere Pro. I am the proud owner of many volumes in the CMP Books, DV Expert Series. Most of them are excellent, this one is unsatisfactory. It describes only the basics, and I mean the basics. It is not much more than a user-friendly owners manual. I've actually found the Help resource within Premiere Pro to be more informative. This book is only good for the first two weeks you are using the program. After you are acclimated to the interface and common operations you will shelve it and scour the internet for tutorials or tips specific to your needs. An editor that is serious about his work, needs to know his software from top to bottom. Otherwise, the scope of his creativity is curtailed due to an innadequate knowledge of process. Let me stress that this book is only worthwhile to the most inexperienced editors and users new to the Adobe Product line. In addition, the DVD is total garbage. Most volumes in the DV Epert Series have pretty decent bonus/tutorial material. This one does not.
On the positive side - No gripes about the writing style, after all I'm looking for industry professionals here, not poets. It will get you up and running if you are brand new to Premiere Pro.
Overall - Would not recommend this text.
Great book for New and Intermediate Editors.......2006-01-12
I had never used Premier Pro so I decided to read this book before starting. When I sat down to import my first footage I was plesantly surprised at how much I had retained. Its written in a very visual way that really sticks with you and conveys the concepts going on behind the scenes as well as the actual nuts and bolts of the program. Its written in a logical progression from start to finish that allows new Editors to take it a step at a time. The author spent time where it was needed the most and moved along quickly in areas where the learning curve was easier, encouraging readers to start with solid fundamentals and build from there. I was able to get right into a big project with confidence.
Very well written.......2005-03-09
I have read numerous "how to" books on premier pro and editing, in general, but none as well written than this. By well written, I mean that he talks to the reader with the assumption that they know very little. Thus, his explanations and use of analogies are geared towards creating concrete images that one can use in understanding some pretty abstract concepts in editing. He makes the learning very visual. So, I would say this is an excellent book for visual learners. Despite the use of a great deal of text, he explains the processes in concrete visual terms so that you can better grasp and retain the concepts. Very well done.
A great place to start.......2004-09-04
Had used Premiere Pro for an 18 minute project and had some of the major concepts down already. Knew my way around the interface a bit, but found that I really didn't feel comfortable, and knew that there was alot of stuff beneath the surface that I could really use. I have several premiere pro books that are really just manual replacements and I didn't want one more step by step "do this, then this" hand holding books. I wanted to get a handle on how to get my projects done and what tools Premier Pro had to help me.
The book covered all the bases: Acquistion, rough cut, tim, sound, effects, color correction and even some basic integration with other products.
I found the Editing Worksop to be a pleasure to read, and it gave me a much firmer foundation on how this NLE works, and what is really happening to my clips along the way. It is a great book for the beginner to intemediate user. I still find myself going back to reread sections as I work or as I read more advanced books. The book is clear, concise and well illustrated. Many illustrations are well thought out and designed to illustrate concepts rather than just pages of screen shots. The book manages to give a very comprehensive grasp of all the major features, without becoming lost in useless detail. Not the last Premiere Pro book you will own, but one of the best, and the one you should read first.
Editing Workshop.......2004-06-03
OK I admit it, most of my work is done on a Mac. But I do keep a fully loaded PC in my editing bay for jobs that require PC apps. One of those apps I keep on board and up to date it Premiere.
What caught my eye about this book was the Editing Workshop concept.
This book not only benefits Premiere Pro editors, but editors in general.
I loved the illustrations in Chapter 5 on Trimming. You took the time to draw it out to describe Handles. A subject that causes many students much consternation.
Good job.
