Book Description

Thorough and up-to-date, this book supports any of the most popular approaches to AIS: focus on transaction cycles and controls; focus on systems life cycle; focus on databases and data modeling; or focus on computer-based controls, fraud and auditing. The book begins with an overview and conceptual foundations then goes on to discuss control and audit of accounting information systems, accounting information systems applications, and the systems development process. For CPAs and corporate accountants.

1 out of 5 stars Yawning Hell.......2006-05-31

Is this the world's most boring book ? Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !

2 out of 5 stars Only Buy if Required for a Class.......2005-05-09

Very boring reading. Chapters tend to repeat themselves. The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had. Instructor lectured from power point slides. I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.

1 out of 5 stars Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness........2004-04-03

This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. They'll drop everything and go into premed. Horrible!

3 out of 5 stars Agreed. Boring as dirt........2003-05-10

Everything you need is in here, but the book truly is boring as dirt. If you need it for a class, fine. But do not buy it if you just want something to read.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but boring.......1999-09-12

This is a very comprehensive textbook of the subject. It deals with just about every aspect of the AIS realm. It is, however, a very dull book. There isn't much illustrating, no color, and absolutely no life beyond the black and white wasteland of its pages.

This book is pretty good for somebody that doesn't know anything about using Microsoft Office. If you are an advanced user, this book is too basic.

5 out of 5 stars The eBook is GREAT!.......2007-08-28

I find myself buying the InsideOut series, even if I have other books on a topic, because of the included eBook. I love the fact that I always have the information on my computer and can search it for whatever I need. This book is not very detailed, but it helped me with relative references in Excel just last week. I opened the eBook, searched for "relative reference" and found what I needed. Paid for the book, in my opinion. Oh, and I use the hardcover to page through and look for new information, when I have the time.

5 out of 5 stars All You Ever Wanted To Know About Office 2007.......2007-05-12

This is a very comprehensive and detailed reference book for Office 2007. I have found it invaluable as a reference tool when I can't get Office to do something I want it to do. Just check in the index, read the very clear description and instructions and I am on my way!

VERY thick manual that is a book for both the beginner as well as the advanced user of Microsoft 2007

Book Description

Praise for Service-Oriented Architecture

"This book provides a superb overview of the SOA topic. Marks and Bell provide practical guidance across the entire SOA life cycle-from business imperatives and motivations to the post-deployment business and technical metrics to consider. With this book, Marks and Bell demonstrate a unique ability to take the complex dynamics of SOA, and through an eloquent set of metaphors, models, and principles, provide an understandable and insightful how-to manual for both technical and business executives. This will become a required handbook for any organization implementing SOA."
—Dan Bertrand, Enterprise Technology Officer & EDS Fellow, EDS Corporation

"A fundamental breakthrough in the business and technology perspectives of SOA-this book belongs in every software developer, architect, and IT executive library. Marks and Bell demonstrate a creative and practical approach to building complex, service-oriented systems. I especially liked the hands-on perspective brought to multiple aspects of SOA. A must-have guide in the technology turbulence of the future."
—Ariel Aloni, Chief Technology Officer, SunGard Data Management Solutions

"This outstanding text gets straight to the heart of the matter, cutting through the hyperbole and discussing how to drive real business value through SOA. It will certainly impact my behavior, our governance models, and, subsequently, the successful business outcomes we derive as we continue to embrace SOA. A must-read for battle-scarred SOA veterans and fledgling architects alike."
—Christopher Crowhurst, Vice President and Chief Architect, Thomson Learning

"Too often, SOA has been perceived as 'all about the technology'-standards, technology stacks, operational monitoring, and the like. In this book, Marks and Bell expand beyond the technology to provide a refreshing business-driven perspective to SOA, connecting the dots between business requirements, architecture, and development and operations, and overlaying these perspectives with tried-and-true governance techniques to keep SOA initiatives on track. A must-read for those leading the charge to adopt SOA within their enterprise."
—Brent Carlson, Chief Technology Officer, LogicLibrary and coauthor of San Francisco Design Patterns: Blueprints for Business Software

"Marks and Bell have captured a wealth of practical experience and lessons learned in what has become the hottest topic in software development. In this book, they explain in detail what works and what does not, from procedural issues to technical challenges. This book is an invaluable reference for organizations seeking the benefits of SOAs."
—Dr. Jeffrey S. Poulin, System Architect, Lockheed Martin and author of Measuring Software Reuse: Principles, Practices, and Economic Models

"One of the last things companies often consider when implementing a business solution such as SOA is the impact on people. Marks and Bell provide an in-depth look at 'what has to change' from a process standpoint to make any SOA implementation a success. A great read for those considering to embark on an enterprise SOA and looking for the right mix of people, process, and products."
—Alan Himler, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing, LogicLibrary

SOA is a complex topic and a complex organizational goal

Service-Oriented Architecture: A Planning and Implementation Guide for Business and Technology shows you how to plan, implement, and achieve SOA value through its prescriptive approach, joining the business and strategic perspective to the technical and architectural perspective.

Applicable to all industries, technology platforms, and operating environments, this innovative book provides you with the essential strategies to drive greater value from your SOA and realize your business goals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT TECHNOLOGY BOOK .......2007-07-02

This book is an excellent SOA technological introduction that presents major architectural concerns that most architects, team leads, developers, and software modelers struggle with. It addresses fundamental service-oriented challenges and provides viable solutions that IT professionals can employ:
- A service lifecycle that identifies major modeling disciplines
- Introduction to service-oriented analysis, design, and realization
- Introduction to service-oriented technologies
- A service-oriented integration model that provide viable interoperable solutions
- Service reusability model that elaborates on various methods that can facilitate asset reuse in organizations

I'd recommend this book to IT personnel and SOA practitioners that would like to learn more about starting service-oriented projects and achieving effective results.

5 out of 5 stars Business Focused SOA .......2007-06-26

This book is a must read for the Executive and Architect responsible for transforming their business processes and IT infrastructure from something resembling an anchor to an agile, flexible system that enables corporate progress. This book will show you a process that will help you get off step 0, define the right services, and ensure that your SOA efforts resolve your business and IT challenges. When implementing an SOA, the technology is the easy part, ensuring that services are created in a consistent manner, that they are designed with reuse in mind, that s/w creation, and hence new product development, gets less expensive and takes less time, over time, that's the hard part, that's where SOA Governance comes in, and this book will give you the SOA Governance basics you need to get your SOA transformation off to a good start. Get control of Governance and your 75% there. This book will not provide code snippets, developer advice, or describe technical specifications, if you want these things, get Thomas Url' or Greg Lomow' books. This book is about using a top-down business service analysis, bottom-up implementation considered, iterative SOA design model. Read it to develop or improve your SOA planning capabilities.

2 out of 5 stars Not for a Developer.......2007-05-15

Note: My strong dislike of this book probably says more about me than the book...

As a developer I like books that bridge the technical and the business gap. I need to see, in concrete examples, how things might be implemented -- I want to see code, configuration documents, snippets of policy code etc. I also find it helpful when books build upon a sample application. I wanted to see examples of the technology that enables SOA, walk-thrus of standards such WSPL.

This book has none of that. To me it is a book of high-level lists of lists and every section I've read leaves me wondering what it said. I think they repeat themselves too much and the book seems poorly organized with material half way through a chapter which seemed to me to belong at the start. For all it being high-level, they make an assumption that the reader is familiar with a host of acronyms and/or the technology behind them.

5 out of 5 stars SOA - Pragmatic Advice .......2007-03-05

Much has been written about the promise of SOA and, at the same time, the difficulty in realizing that promise to date. Most of us who work in this field know by now how to address the technical concepts, architecture and services in an SOA. Where this book stands apart from so many others is that it provides both conceptual and pragmatic advice in three critical areas which need attention for SOA to mature, to achieve business buy-in, and to attain the "SOA network effect" as the authors call it. These keys are: shifting focus to identification of candidate business services; SOA governance, organization, and behavior; and a framework for an SOA business case, ROI model and scorecard.

I enthusiastically recommend this book for the authors' lucid, insightful chapters on these three subjects alone. That they are woven nicely into a more complete system of processes and supporting structures to nurture along SOA through critical mass is an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read !!!!.......2007-01-23

"Service Oriented Architecture is a hot topic and will be for times to come however it is often misunderstood topic in the Information Technology field today. Based on the SDN Network IT professionals see the potential of an SOA -- especially a web services-based SOA -- in dramatically speeding up the application development process They also see it as a way to build applications and systems that are more adaptable, and in doing so, they see IT becoming more agile in responding to changing business needs. Not only is SOA a hot topic, but it's clearly the wave of the future. Gartner reports that "By 2008, SOA will be a prevailing software engineering practice, ending the 40-year domination of monolithic software architecture" and that "Through 2008, SOA and web services will be implemented together in more than 75 percent of new SOA or web services projects." Bell articulately describes the concepts, specifications, technical nuisances and standards behind service orientation and Web Services. One primary objective of applying SOA in design is to provide business value to the solutions we build. Understanding the right approach to analyzing, designing, and developing service-oriented solutions is critical. This book is a must read!"

5 out of 5 stars I'm no dummy, but this is good!.......2007-09-09

I have always been seriously put off by the "Dummies" series. I would like to buy books that assume some intelligence on the part of the reader. I don't like being talked down to.

But this book doesn't do that. Instead it explains concepts clearly, and has been a great help to me in understanding the clouds of jargon that surround this topic. The explanation of the components of SOA and how they hook together is excellent!

Because I am not yet directly involved, I cannot judge the accuracy of their details (and of course, they may change over time), but since the objective is to get the main concepts across, I believe the authors are successful.

I really wish, though, that the series were called "Achieving Buzzword Compliance in ...".

1 out of 5 stars Disappoing Book.......2007-08-30

The one thing that most people agree upon for SOA is that there is a lot of confusion. This book unfortunately adds to that confusion.

If you want to know what is going on today in what is being called SOA, this book is fine. It takes a look at what is out there, and reverse engineers it and describes the pieces. Unfortunately what is being done in general and what SOA is supposed to be is quite different.

If you were interested in what SOA is SUPPOSED to be, this book is very far off the mark. If you look at Thomas Erl's definitive books on SOA, you will see a vast difference from SOA as described in this book. Some of the chapters are overviews, for those with little or no existing knowledge of SOA, which is probably what you really wanted.

This SOA for Dummies book might be summarized as:
* SOA is good
* Everybody will be doing it
* Lots of companies are working in that area to implement SOA
* Lots of companies are creating SOA related products
* If you don't go SOA, your company will fail
* There is confusion
* We are a consulting company to help you

But my guess is you already knew this.

One aspect that is missing is an emphasis on open source SOA products. This book focuses primarily on commercial products. Even the commercial sources are continuing to donate parts of their systems to open source, so what was commercial is now open source. That is the continuing trend.

I would say take this book as light reading (even though it's 350 pages), but don't try to remember too much of it. Don't presume the people implementing SOA really know what SOA is all about. I've seen SOA described formally in detailed all the way to the other extreme where some people call everything on the Web as part of SOA, which it isn't. So when you hear someone talk about SOA, be really skeptical.

This book tells you what is going on, not what should be going on. The question for you is just what to you want to implement. Because you want to do it right the first time. Calling anything that has a "service" as part of SOA, won't get you there.

5 out of 5 stars Good Refresher.......2007-08-18

It has been a few years since I worked with Web Services so I was looking for a book that would get me started again. This book did the trick. In addition to the ramp up, I also appreciated the end material including chapters for each major SOA vendor and a good glossary.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly theory.........2007-06-08

This is my first book in the dummies series.I being a technical guy, expected more working examples with explanation. But it is mostly theoretical. The case studies made interesting reading. This book will be suited for managers than technical persons.

5 out of 5 stars Great for cutting through the hype.......2007-03-22

I have used this book and recommended to my staff to help clarify terms, get agreement on basic principles, and help everyone explain SOA better to those who need it explained. The authors have a wealth of experience and have really helped us cut through the jargon jungle which surrounds this area. I recommend it for pros and novices alike.

This book reminds me more of a travelog about many of the sights and sounds you will encounter on your quest to become best friends with your Accounting Information System.

It would make a lot more sense if the authors skipped a lot of the details of where Accounting Information Systems fit in our social experience and get down to dealing with the dirty details of how someone would go about writing a system of their own.

Then they could spend a chapter on how to go about the testing of the system and how and why to do a complete re-write of this masterpiece.

Contains little information that is not covered by the help files. Don't bother with this manual or series.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me come up to speed quickly.......2007-02-28

I bought this book after I read the Windows Vista Step by Step book. I really liked that book, but I like this one even better. There is so much information about Outlook in general and the cool new features of Outlook 2007--I've been using it at work and it's just amazing. I did have some trouble setting up the program at home, which is why I bought this book. I found the solution in Chapter 1.

One thing I like about this book, and I guess the series, is that it has not only the exercises and lots of pictures, but also some great tips and tricks that have helped me come up to speed fast.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2004-03-13

I found this book really wordy and boring, it put me to sleep. The whole idea of learning AIS from a textbook is just like trying to learn to use computer without a computer! The whole AIS operation circle isn't hard to comprehend, but learning it from hundred of pages of literature is a dumb idea. On top of that, I don't think I have to learn the definition of E-Business and its difference from Internet(is there a e-business operated without internet?!).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-10-26

I work as an accountant and was looking for a book to brush up on AIS. I don't have any other books, except my university text, to compare this to but this book has done an excellent job bringing me up to speed on the current AIS function. This field is rapidly changing and its important for practioners to keep on top of this area of study. I was not disappointed. In my opinion, this book can make this everchanging field very comprehensible to practioners at any level.

5 out of 5 stars 21st Century Accounting Information Systems.......2003-06-05

Unlike many of the other AIS textbooks still being sold, this textbook was well written to begin with and was seriously edited and re-written where necessary to improve its teaching quality in this 5th Edition.

The only criticism that I have of the text was the failure to clearly address the problem of how to code database entries so that a statement of cash balance could be generated using the direct method.

I would recommend a different graphic artist for this next cover, but the authors are right up there with Charles Horngren in my book for writing easy to read and understand Accounting textbooks.

Excellent for self-study when learning this in a classroom is not a viable option.

The only worthy competitor with this textbook is "Accounting Information Systems" 3rd Edtion by James A. Hall which I also recommend .

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2000-11-14

This book is excellent. I find out this book was very helpful for my brother and he told me that when I grow up latter I can use this book.

4 out of 5 stars Beginners' guide for accounting system.......2000-11-06

This is a good book for people to understand accounting concept and how to apply in computer system. This is especially good for beginners in accounting software. The data flow diagram in the books is very clear but not detail enough.

5 out of 5 stars In depth.......2007-09-16

Great book. Really goes into detail. If you've read Essential Microsoft Operations Manager, you'll certainly be pleased with how this book expands on these concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for anyone managing with MOM 2005.......2007-01-02

This is the book that bridges the gaps between product documentation, how the product works and how to use the product in a real world deployment.

As an avid MOM administrator, this is one of the rare books that is like having an experienced consultant with you to answer questions. MOM can be a complicated tool. Often people will be frustrated with attempting to deploy and manage using MOM. I highly recommend reading this book prior to deployment. The $60.00 price tag is nothing when compared to the hours you will spend tuning and attempting to understand MOM without it.

4 out of 5 stars offers top level and fine grained control.......2006-12-22

The complexity of Microsoft Operations Manager is attested to by the sheer bulk of this book. Some readers must surely wonder why any text on any computer program can be so hefty? But to a large extent, MOM's complexity is a consequence of the complexity of systems administration of the Microsoft operating systems and the ancillary packages deployed on top of these, like SQL Server and Exchange. At tremendous effort, Microsoft has built up an entire ecosystem of packages and operating systems. And there are many books devoted to each component.

But MOM's remit is to offer an integrated top level, and yet fine-grained approach, to managing the entire offering. Typically, the reader of this book will be a sysadmin of one, and in fact usually several, corporate computers. If you just have a personal computer running a Microsoft operating system, you are unlikely to need MOM.

Readers from a unix background might recognise an analogy between MOM and IBM's SMIT. The latter was a GUI tool that ran on AIX (IBM's version of unix), and greatly eased the managing of the often intricate AIX commands. But SMIT only really dealt with running the operating system. MOM also offers control of those above-mentioned sundry packages atop the operating system. So MOM is far more complicated.

A quick measure of MOM's complexity is given in Chapter 14. Where MOM's intelligence is embedded in its rule sets. With the default rule set having over 5000 rules, that pertain to what is recommended (or not) for the platforms and applications. Strewth! Happy reading. :)
