The best! - Web server manual money can buy........2005-01-14
Hands down this is one of the best textbooks I've read in a while. Written by a DeVry University professor, Steve Silva, he cuts out the fluff and goes to straight to the meat and potatoes of the subject! If you want to master web server administration, this is book to read!

Book Description
From the exclusive publisher of Oracle Press books, here is an architectural and technical reference on how to use Oracle Application Server 10g to Web-enable Oracle databases for application server systems. You’ll find coverage of installation, configuration, and tuning, using Java with Oracle Application Server 10g, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
The Standard!.......2006-05-30
I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the handbook. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of application design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle Application Server 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).
Very Nice Job.......2005-08-28
I have taken the iAS 10 Admin I course from Oracle, and wish that I read this book prior to the class. I found it very valuable especially if you are deploying iAS 10g (9.0.4) on Linux. I highly recommend the book to iAS administrators/DBA's.
Summary of the White Papers.......2005-02-24
As an administrator/implementor of these systems, there are many aspects to administering the 10gAS system. Although the authors do make reference the book intends to simplify the rather large amount of documentation, it falls short of a complete guide.
It is good starting point for a default implementation--detailed installation steps, with moderate emphasis on design (ex. touching on distributed administration and delegation). Thus provides adequate groundwork.
The forefront of administration of this product is design choices. For example, the Internet Directoy piece is major component to the architecture--its design greatly impacts administration of the entire system. Perhaps this book was not intended to be a design resource (since it is designated an "Administration Handbook"), but administration in the field of application servers is highly dependent upon design decisions.
The book would be a fair addition to a reference library, but not necessary if one is willing to sift through the vendor "White Paper" documentation--as large and convoluted as it may be.
Great Book.......2004-11-29
Mr Donald k. Buleson and John Garmany have more experiene in Oracle field and Complete knowledge of Oracle Their books have many useful information and are well-written.
Informative! An easy read..........2004-04-09
I have enjoyed reading books by both of these authors. The technical layout of information allows the reader to focus in on what is being presented. The readability factor is important to me, and I appreciated being able to sit down and casually read rather than do a thorough study of what's in this book - without sacrificing technical depth. Highly recommend!

Great Book, well written better than MS Press........2007-05-04
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to deploy SharePoint and needs to start from scratch and understand architecture of it. The author did a great job explaining and giving all the tools needed to design and deploy SharePoint successfully. Very easy read and I love the fact that author uses humor in his book makes it easier to read. This is the only book you really need to design, architect and deploy SharePoint. I have done it with great success. Two thumps up!!!

SharePoint 2003 ONLY!.......2007-02-14
Well written with many useful illustrations. However, it is for SharePoint 2003, NOT 2007! Although there is a short chapter in the back about new 2007 features, the author is currently working on a 2007 version of this book, which apparently hasn't been published quite yet.
Good Introduction to the Software.......2006-11-19
SharePoint has been a product growing at Microsoft for several years. As is often the case, now in what is basically its third generation it is finally reaching an extremely useful stage.
This book is written by an expert in the Software that has been working as a trainer in the SharePoint for four years. It begins with a basic introduction to the software and follows this with detailed installation instructions.
With a working SharePoint the following chapters each take on one aspect of the software. These can be used independently or studied in sequence to provide an overall insight into the software and what it can do. Finally, in the last chapter he goes on to discuss the changes that will come in SharePoint 2007.

Whether you're administering a Web site, managing an intranet, or just browsing the Web, performance should be a chief concern. In Web Performance Tuning, author Patrick Killelea tackles this challenging topic with a methodical string of problems and possible solutions. This title is most beneficial for those maintaining Web sites but offers several browser-related tips and solid technical background for users of any level.
The first part of this book discusses the basic performance challenges for both the browser and server sides of the equation and advises on an overall approach for identifying and attacking performance bottlenecks. The author offers many important questions for you to keep in mind and some useful techniques for measuring Web performance. This section wraps up with a few case studies that exhibit common problems.
The meat of the book is an in-depth look at all of the aspects of Web performance. The author begins with the client browser and operating-system software, discusses network hardware and protocols, and finally addresses the complex nature of server configurations. He finishes with a discussion of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and Java scripts and some quick coverage of tuning Web databases.
Throughout the book, Killelea addresses popular application software titles, but with an emphasis on Unix servers. While Web Performance Tuning is a helpful tool for tweaking your Web connections, it also serves as an excellent primer on the technical details of the Web. --Stephen Plain
Book Description
As long as there's been a Web, people have been trying to make it faster. The maturation of the Web has meant more users, more data, more features, and consequently longer waits on the Web. Improved performance has become a critical factor in determining the usability of the Web in general and of individual sites in particular. Web Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition is about getting the best possible performance from the Web. This book isn't just about tuning web server software; it's also about streamlining web content, getting optimal performance from a browser, tuning both client and server hardware, and maximizing the capacity of the network itself. Web Performance Tuning hits the ground running, giving concrete advice for quick results -- the "blunt instruments" for improving crippled performance right away. The book then shifts gears to give a conceptual background of the principles of computing performance. The latter half of the book examines each element of a web transaction -- from client to network to server -- to find the weak links in the chain and show how to strengthen them. In this second edition, the book has been significantly expanded to include:
- New chapters on Web site architecture, security, reliability, and their impact on performance
- Detailed discussion of scalability of Java on multi-processor servers
- Perl scripts for writing web performance spiders that handle logins, cookies, SSL, and more
- Detailed instructions on how to use Perl DBI and the open source program gnuplot to generate performance graphs on the fly
- Coverage of rstat, a Unix-based open source utility for gathering performance statistics remotely
In addition, the book includes many more examples and graphs of real-world performance problems and their solutions, and has been updated for Java 2. This book is for anyone who has waited too long for a web page to display, or watched the servers they manage slow to a crawl. It's about making the Web more usable for everyone.

A classic reference for every engineers library.......2004-06-09
Published in 1998, this book is one of the best for web performance testing, covering the technical basics for everything you need to know in order to really understand performance tuning. It includes such required information as definitions of various performance metrics, and what those should be in the real world, and moves along through networks, hardware, and operating systems. It goes to great pains to cover a variety of systems, including Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and a variety of web servers.

Classic O'Reilly marred by thin dynamic web coverage.......2003-04-04
Pragmatic and opinionated in the best of old-time O'Reilly style, this book is a colorful guided tour by an old-hand.
The thing is, if you need this book, your website is probably a high-traffic professional/commercial site. And in these days this means (1) dynamic content, (2) database, (3) a content-management/templating system, (4) user identity tracking. Perhaps even interface to legacy client/server systems. Unfortunately, this book goes only as far as CGI, Java, and general DB issues. Messaging middleware is briefly considered. Distributed OO (CORBA, EJB) is discussed and dismissed (a luxury in real world). No coverage of other popular dynamic web technologies (e.g. ASP, ColdFusion) or content-management systems. In particular, a serious discussion of trade-offs between performance and content/workflow manageability would ground the whole discussion in real life.
And the architecture chapter, while very insightful, is simply too thin. After all it is much better and easier to plan for performance from the start, then to try tweaking an existing system. The chapter discusses architectures of varying complexity - without including a single diagram! Complete case studies along the line of the mod_perl white paper .... would be invaluable - perhaps broken down by type (e.g. news/portal/B2C) where unique usage patterns will drive unique architecture and optimization.
Despite the tilt towards monitoring and diagnosis, this is still a very valuable book in an under-served but important area. Generous references enable the reader to explore individual topics further.
Is not just server performance tuning you know..........2003-02-17
This is one book with wide appeal because it is useful to anyone that uses the Internet; so if you are reading this review - chances are very good that you will find this book of some use. The subtitle sums up the book very nicely... it is full of tips to help you speed up the web, regardless of how you usually go about using it.
I've had the pleasure of owning both copies of Web Performance Tuning and I must say the second edition was quite a dramatic rewrite, adding over 100 pages of new and updated information - it was about time for an update considering the age of the book.
Of course, if you are both a web user and a web developer you will derive the most benefit as pretty much everything in the book will apply to you to some degree. Part I focuses on detailing the problems that can occur, and only the first chapter has any useful information for anyone who is simply the web visitor. But if you've got any interest in knowing about server and connection failures and monitoring web performance then it would be worth taking a look at.
Part II of Web Performance Tuning actually looks at how you can improve your web experience; starting from the browser and working all the way through to the technologies that power the web. This makes it easy to follow as well as to help identify exactly where any major problems you may be experiencing are caused.
For those wanting quick answers to their browsing or server problems, then you will find help in the form of questions you might want to ask yourself right at the start of the book. I preferred the old way this quick reference was done, as it was a list of recommendations rather than a list of questions; you don't know you have a problem if you don't know the questions to ask!
Speed Racer.......2002-10-29
Four years in the making, the second edition of "Web Performance Tuning" is some 30% larger (456 vs. 351 pages) than the first, but don't let the increased size slow you down. Patrick Killelea makes good use of it by showing you how to get the best possible performance out of your web server, site, and browser. The primary emphasis is on tuning web server software, but tuning client and server hardware, streamlining content, getting the most bang for your byte are also covered.
Aimed at more advanced system administrators and webmasters, this book provides the tools and techniques you can use to maximize the speed and throughput of your server. The emphasis is on performance monitoring, analysis, and planning. You can't attack a performance problem until you understand it and that means measuring what's actually happening. Lucky for us, Killelea provides free scripts you can use to measure the performance of your web site at his own site patrick dot net.
There you'll find scripts you can use on your Unix server to measure, monitor, and debug any performance problems you're having. Killelea also provides a web-based version of his analysis.cgi script that breaks down the components of web site response time into DNS, connect time, server silence (load), transmission (content size), and close time. Type in your URL and up pops a graph of transmission times, broken down into the above components, complete with a bottleneck analysis and some recommendations.
Speaking of bottlenecks, when it comes to web performance, smoothing out bottlenecks is the name of the game. If your server is low on memory excessive swapping can occur. If you spawn too many processes without mod_perl on board you've got a problem. Killelea's tools and prose show you where the slowdowns occur, and how to fix them for maximum speed.
Everything from low volume sites (1-10,000 hits/day) to high (over 1 million hits/day) can benefit from this in-depth book. Techniques that may work well at lower traffic levels can fall apart once the server heats up. Killelea takes a pragmatic approach to performance tuning with an emphasis on actual testing and measurement rather than overplanning, mathematical modeling, and simple yet expensive solutions.
While bandwidth is steadily increasing, latency stubbornly refuses to decrease. The speed of light isn't changing anytime soon, so addressing latency, especially on the Web, is a high priority. The other parameters of performance are throughput, utilization, and efficiency. This book will help you fine tune them all to make your web site sing.

Customer Reviews:
Caution: Authorized IT personnel only.......2006-11-15
This is a book that should be read only by seasoned IT professionals. As the director of a small academic lab I don't have the luxury of having adequate IT support, so I, like many others, have to wing it. With its rave reviews I thought this book would help, but it didn't. Another 50-100 pages (a relatively small increment in this tome) to compactly introduce and define some of the jargon would have helped immensely and expanded the intended audience to those familiar with IT, but as a sideline, not a career. That being said, I appreciated the author's candor and attention to "gotchas" that official documentation doesn't mention.
No other OS X server book comes close.......2006-02-08
Even with 10.4 out this is still the number one book on Mac OS X server there is. Period. Bartosh goes deep in to all areas of OS X server and provides excellent examples for you to follow. This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it.
This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration........2006-02-03
This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported.
Inside the first part, there is a chapter about planning system deployment reviewing different scenarios as first task to take care of. The author exposes some basic ideas about system administration as well as strategies and tools to resolve a large number of common problems.
One of the key points of this book is its better organization centered around system deployment phases than Apple documentation. Continuous explanations and small tricks to monitor and tune the system are made across the entire book sections. There is exhaustive information about installation with graphical tools, command line and network setup. The most appreciated resource can be screenshots: it allows to follow all the explanations without any problem to new Apple system administrator.
Authors, as advanced users, describe in an easy but deeply enough way all management tools of all system services either graphical or command line versions. Some other Open Source or even propietary tools are described when they are good alternatives to Apple ones.
All the chapters contain "best practices" sections and background knowledge to really understand their functions.
This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration. I'm really impatient waiting for Tiger revision.
Best MacOS X Server book.......2005-12-22
For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition.
http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20051221121321676
I hope they change their minds because it will certainly leave a big void in future MacOS X Server documentation.
Not for Web Server help.......2005-10-14
If you are looking for OS X web server inside information, this is not it. Only about 15 pages, out of 800, discuss the web server. And the information on those pages mostly just covers the already intuitive interface. It would not be fair for me to dis the whole book based on this one gaping whole - but since that was the information I was looking for more information on, I was sorely tempted.

Book Description
Linux consistently appears high up in the list of popular Internet servers, whether it's for the Web, anonymous FTP, or general services such as DNS and delivering mail. But security is the foremost concern of anyone providing such a service. Any server experiences casual probe attempts dozens of time a day, and serious break-in attempts with some frequency as well. This highly regarded book, originally titled Building Secure Servers with Linux, combines practical advice with a firm knowledge of the technical tools needed to ensure security. The book focuses on the most common use of Linux--as a hub offering services to an organization or the Internet--and shows readers how to harden their hosts against attacks. An all-inclusive resource for Linux users who wish to harden their systems, Linux Server Security covers general security such as intrusion detection and firewalling a hub, as well as key services such as DNS, the Apache Web server, mail, and secure shell. Author Michael D. Bauer, a security consultant, network architect, and lead author of the popular Paranoid Penguin column in the Linux Journal, carefully outlines the security risks, defines precautions that can minimize those risks, and offers recipes for robust security. He is joined on several chapters by administrator and developer Bill Lubanovic. A number of new security topics have been added for this edition, including:
- Database security, with a focus on MySQL
- Using OpenLDAP for authentication
- An introduction to email encryption
- The Cyrus IMAP service, a popular mail delivery agent
- The vsftpd FTP server
Geared toward Linux users with little security expertise, the author explains security concepts and techniques in clear language, beginning with the fundamentals. Linux Server Security with Linux provides a unique balance of "big picture" principles that transcend specific software packages and version numbers, and very clear procedures on securing some of those software packages on several popular distributions. With this book in hand, you'll have both the expertise and the tools to comprehensively secure your Linux system.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed about the installation instructions........2005-08-06
The big reason why I purchased this book was because it claimed it was great about security and it said it would show how to setup these services the correct way.
Well first of all this author loves to use the binary packages (RPMs, etc.). And anyone that is a major security buff knows that the RPMs are the last things to get updated when a flaw is found out.
Secondly that's all the user shows for the installation of most of the software is how to do it with a binary distribution. So unless you are using Suse, Redhat, Fedora it is quite useless. This book should indicate that it made for those distributions and it is not general "Linux".
Also his views on running some of the software is really off the wall. But that is just a personal preference I guess.
Overall if he would have used the regular "./configure ---comands", "make", "make install" this book would have been much better and it would have been able to be used for those that don't want to be stuck in "rpm hell".
Not Focused.......2005-06-13
I read every column of paranoid penguin and they are quite good. This book is ok, but not great. They (I mean they because several chapters are not by Mike) try to cover a huge amount of information and make the mistake of being both too broad in some areas and too specific in others. Overall, there wasn't a cohesive glue to bring the chapters together into a single vision.
For instance, for a book that introduces FTP servers, web servers, mail (imap/smtp), dns - they are like separate entities. They do not complete the picture by showing a complete network diagram with IDS / VPN, -- showing an example of all of their advice coming together in a working solution. And Kerberos isn't even mentioned.
They were extremely specific in some areas like talking about rpm example/debian/ make options and specific .conf options ad nauseum - which detracted from the whole picture. Is someone securing bind 4 really reading this book? Also, maybe a mention of apt-get - - but don't tell me how to install each package on every architecture - it just inflates the word count.
I don't think this book was focused enough in the 'big picture' of trying to piece together all of the tiny pieces into a coherant whole, while at the same time it gets cought up in the minute details of certain packages making for a tough read.
Perhaps they could have included an actual example company or two showing possible layouts of ldap in action with:
login/mail/split-dns/firewalls/database$web.

This book goes along with the moving trend of the normal computer user, securing your data. Servers generally are targeted more often than the average home PC because most are made to be accessible from the outside world. This is where securing that server comes into play. This book covers the tools and techniques to securing your Bastion host.
First I'd like to start out and explain what Bastion host means as according this book so you can understand what this book covers more specifically. Bastion Host is defined as "A system that runs publicly accessible services but is usually not itself a firewall. Bastion hosts are what we put on DMZ (although they can be put anywhere). The term implies that a certain amount of system hardening has been done, but sadly, this is not always the case."
After you understand what a Bastion host is defined as, you should understand that this book mainly covers these server daemons and the systems that run them. But some of the information applies to a Linux desktop system such as a per host iptables firewall, using secure shell, keeping up with your logs, and intrusion detection. Most of these things the average user doesn't care much about but sometimes being paranoid comes in handy.
Someone who would most likely use this book more than the average desktop user would probaly be a system administrator. Securing web, database, ftp, dns, and email servers is what majority of this book contains. Along with covering these server systems, there are guides to securing the Linux system that runs these daemons along with designing the networks around these types of hosts.
One of the sections I'm most fond of is Chapter 2: Designing Perimeter Networks. With this section you can really take a look at the design and layout of the different types of networks and figure out the portions that suit your needs for your own network. The diagrams shown in this chapter help explain what is going on with the traffic and allows you to see exactly what is going on and at what points the systems are protected.
At the end of the book there are 2 well commented iptables firewall scripted that allow you to get a feel for the netfilter iptables system if you're not familiar with it already. With some modification of these scripts you can easily bring them into a working environment depending on your situation, which sometimes these helps with some of the frustration with the iptables syntax. I personally prefer the PF system within OpenBSD for it's clean syntax and have grown away from iptables, but both are powerful firewall systems and should fit the needs of your network.
I'd definitely recommend this book to system admins or anyone who is paranoid about their security. Security is always something that people should be educated about.

Great Reference for New Server Admins.......2005-03-22
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is involved with securing Internet servers. The book strikes a nice balance between theoretical background and implementation examples.
Though certainly not all encompassing, the book touches on several key elements of server security, including DNS, Email, File Servers, Web Services, IDS methods and more. People new or just curious about Linux server security will gain the most. More experienced system administrators will find a few implementation tips and useful background information for presentation or training purposes.
Unlike many server security books, this one includes some notes on alternatives to the most popular software packages. For example, the chapter on securing Internet email includes excellent tips on securing both Sendmail and Postfix while the IDS chapter covers the popular Tripwire package and some lesser-known integrity checkers. References and the end of each chapter are provided to point you to even more solutions.
This book certainly will not replace a dedicated reference volume, but I find it to be a good summary of major security practices for bastion hosts. Note that the book focuses primarily on host hardening. Though there are some sections on network security, most of the chapters focus on locking down your server. So if you are mainly interested in network clusters, network surveillance, or honeypots, you will probably want to find another reference. Also, if you have several years of experience, you may not find too much new information, but the book is a handy reference volume that can point you in the right direction. If, however, you are new to Linux server security or just simply want a concise summary of common security practices, then this will be a welcomed addition to your technical library.
Very helpful.......2005-03-07
I am quite happy that there are books like Linux Server Security.
A lot of people think Linux is bullet proof, but its not. If not configured correctly, it can be just as insecure as Windows.
Linux Server Security is an important and timely book in that it shows how to harden Linux to be very secure.

Perfect for webmaster/sysadmins and non-technical decisionmakers.......2007-03-29
The Community Server platform is an out-of-the-box server software product that makes it possible to create online communities quickly.
The book, Community Server Quickly, helps the system administrator or webmaster that is new to this product, to get a quick start. It must be noted that the book focuses on the 2.1 version of the server. The 3.0 version is at the moment of this review in beta 2, and the book features a small chapter on this release.
The first section is a good introduction to what community server is. It presents the five main functionalities: Blog, forums, photo galleries, file galleries and reader/roller.
Next it explains in detail how to install the server followed by a very detailed description of the five functionalities. I don't think there is a feature in Community Server that isn't described in this book.
The next three chapters is about the administration of users and customizing and setting up the server. This is all described in relation to what the out of-the-box product is capable of.
Last the book goes into the more advanced features of Community Server as reporting, ads, spam blocker, URL redirects etc. This is not need-to-know knowledge for everyone that works with the server, but shows that this book describes what Community Server can do from A to Z.
I think it is a good book for new admins and developers that need an overview of what features the product contains. If you have already worked a lot with Community Server and wants to develop against it, this is not the book for you. Overall its a well-written book for webmasters or non-technical people that want insight in the wonders of CS.

Better Than the Product Documentation.......2007-02-08
Community Server is a very powerful product which, perhaps because it's mainly been written for developers by developers, has never been very strong on end user documentation. That's where this book comes in. If you want something you can pick up and read, that has information organized in a logical fashion, about how to get started with Community Server, then this book is better than anything you will find online.
Only for absolute beginners (new to computers).......2007-02-01
I can't believe they are charging almost $40 for this book.
Imagine a 'quick start' guide that comes with most software - this is an even more basic version.
Examples: it explains 'photo gallery' by stating that in the old days people use albums (in at least two section of the book). There are pages explaining what blogs, forums are. The 'real' meat of the book is just showing screens and telling you what to click.
It is so basic, the title is misleading. For instance, it assumes the users knows how to install IIS, SQLServer etc - but then treats the reader like newbies to computers when explaining the community server or using typical windows install.
I suggest all potential buyers, to browse through it in a book shop first, before ordering. I still can't believe the publisher approved this.
No offense, but the author is doing a college book tour - I think most college students will find this book an insult to their intelligence.
Great User's Manual.......2007-01-30
The majority of this book is dedicated to discussing the various features present in Community Server. The approach is very hands on and uses a "how to" approach in discussing the features. The instructions are detailed enough such that the reader does not have to be a seasoned IT professional in order to make use of the product.
The authors introduce each feature from a functional perspective before documenting how to use it. This is great for any users that may be familiar with one feature such as blogs but may not know what the other features of Community Server are for.
The book also deals with practical issues that will be of interest to many Community Server administrators. These are issues of licensing, hosting options and a comparison with similar products.
A small portion of this book discusses customization of Community Server, but it is only a brief introduction and is clearly not the focus of the book.
This book is ideal for anyone that needs learn what Community Server has to offer and how to get it up and running. If Community Server came with a printed user's manual, this would be it.

Not enough depth!.......2006-08-24
If you are looking for indepth explanation of how to exploit different features of Sharepoint then this book is not for you. This book is good if you want and can survive with a high level overview of sharepoint.
If you want to know of things like:
-Branding
-Details of ONet.XML
-How to use FrontPage to edit website.
-Best practices for developing Sharepoint based solutions.
you want a different book.
However this book does have its merits if you are starting with sharepoint and want to get up and running soon. It does have a lot of pointers as to where you can get more detailed information.
I would disagree with most reviews posted on this website which claim that this is a must have book for sharepoint. Use of your discretion is highly recommended.
I returned this book........2006-06-23
I've never returned a book to Amazon before, but I did return this one. I got more out of 10 minutes just using SharePoint than I did going through this book.
Several of the examples didn't even work - don't waste your time.
If you are a web developer, this book is for you.......2006-03-15
I am a web developer and bought this book to learn about SharePoint, which seems to be gaining in popularity.
The book was perfect for me. The first half or so of the book explains what SharePoint can be used for and then takes you through quite a few exercises actually using the tool.
The second half covers a lot of ground focusing on developing web parts and how to program access to SharePoint from various Office applications like Word and Excel and also .Net.
The text is easy to follow (and not verbose), works very well with the numerous illustrations and everything is explained clearly and straight to the point.
If you are a web developer, this book is for you.
Best Book on WSS 2.0.......2006-01-06
This book focuses on WSS and gets you up and running quickly. There are extensive examples, all of which work as described. The info on integrating with Office (chapters 4, 5, and 6) are the best resources on the subject available in my opinion.
The web part chapters (8 and 9) take you further in 60 pages than the entire Rational Guide (which I returned). The built web part samples are available from the author's site, as is an "Ask Jeff" forum where you can get answers if you get stuck. More authors should do that!
Not Useful.......2006-01-06
I purchased the book to help with some web parts development. The part on deploying web parts is just patently incorrect. Even following the author's instructions step by step, I still had problem deploying my web part. The worst part of it is that the book's content simply doesn't match up with what happens in Sharepoint. Perhaps the books was written with an earlier, different version of Sharepoint but it doesn't match up with Microsoft Windows Sharepoint Services 2003. In fact, compared to other sources, the instructions given appear to be missing a step or two.

good but soon to be outdated.......2002-03-15
Everything you need to know about v.1.3, but with Apache 2.0 just around the corner (currently in beta), you might want to hold off until the 2nd edition. This edition touches very briefly on 2.0, providing a general overview of what to expect, but no meat. A lot remains the same, but some critical things are different, and clear documentation of the kind that this book provides for 1.3 is scant. Hopefully something will come out before too long fill the void.
Of course, Apache 1.x is no slouch, has the majority share of servers on the web currently, could be all you need and more. If you're inclined towards the tried, tested, and true, and shun the unproven, consider this a 5 star recommendation for an excellent book on an excellent, if somewhat venerable, web server.
Good but should have been better.......2001-12-24
There is a lot of good information contained in this book just waiting to get out. Unfortunately, the poor chapter organisation and the abyssmal index makes finding the information you need (or trying to find it later) a frustrating experience. There's also a lot of padding with CGI and PHP scripts that didn't seem to serve any purpose unless you really wanted to learn how to program 'hello world'. Overall, it will teach you the gist of administrating an Apache Web Server, but I found it disappointing.
Best Apache book I've found.......2001-12-20
Excellent instructions, and an amazing companion to the O' Reiley book. Takes the guesswork out of Linux Apache admin, and is a handy tool for any other Unix folks as well.
It's so nice to read a technical book that is accurate and in English not geek.
Perhaps the "must buy" for Apache.......2001-10-18
Having spent a great deal of time wrestling with the more arcane aspects of administering a web server I've read way too much about the Apache server.
This may well be the one book written about Apache that turns into a must buy. It covers earlier in the learning curve and has much better prose than Kabir's "Apache Server Administrator's Handbook" and covers more than Laurie's "Apache: The Definitive Guide". While the sections on Perl, PHP and CGI are not extensive they cover all an Apache administrator needs to know to support the programming efforts of others. I found the sections on troubleshooting and security particularly useful.
I had already compiled Apache from source a number of times so cannot really tell how useful this section might be to the newcomer but it seems to cover everything you need to know to custom build your own httpd binary from source.
The section on configuring Apache is marvellous, I learn something from it every time I open it to assist in reconfiguring a server.
This book is well written, up to date, concise and authoratitive. It has good examples, good explanations and leaves out almost nothing. Everything a computer book should be. I feel that anyone who is starting down the Apache road should buy this book, any real need for earlier information is adequately addressed by the Apache manual while no other volume covers so much of the rest you need to know as well.
You Can't Go Wrong With This Book.......2001-07-21
You can't go wrong with this book if you need a reference book concerning Linux and Apache Web Server Administration.
Author Aulds has a way with words, and he makes the subject easy to digest mixed with a dose of magical clarity. He is up to date, and this book covers besides Perl and CGI, PHP. Good selection of examples which anyone can use in everyday Apache Web administration shows the author's vast experience which is tempered with an equal amount of theorectical expertise.
Highly recommended.
