Good for Dimentional Modeling.......2007-10-05
I did not get chance to read it, but everybody says it the best source to learn Dimensional Modeling. I our project, the DBA is doing it.
A tool rather than a toolkit.......2007-07-03
This book delivers exactly what it says. Except that word "toolkit" in its title - you'd better think about this book being a single tool, not a whole toolkit. Ralph Kimball actually has a whole lot of books on data warehousing published, this is one of them, a tool in the toolkit. This one seems like a good starting point to the entire series, and it only shows a single facet - the dimensional modeling.
The book explains the basic principles of creating dimensions and fact tables in a data warehouse (assuming a relational star schema), and then dedicates a chapter per industry to show how those principles apply to sales, order management, CRM, accounting, human resources, financial services, telecoms, logistics, education, health care, e-commerce, insurance etc. Each one appears to be significantly different from the others.
There is a couple of teaser chapters starting with "we have that other book covering this, but will brief you out". Nice and makes you want to read the other books too.
The book also includes guidelines to the warehouse building process, in terms like "know your business sponsor", "talk to your users" and so on. Difficult to say what it has to do with dimensional modeling, perhaps it's included in all the books in the series.
There is no word on software, hardware, physical architecture, tuning or performance in this book. It is a textbook in dimensional modeling, period.
The book is written clearly, has a handful of simple and uniform diagrams and is easy to follow. It only leaves you wondering just how exactly large is the whole data warehouse area, how many pieces you need to collect yet.
Recommended.
Building a Data Warehouse.......2007-03-09
Excelent book, it shows how to build a good data warehouse by using the best patterns. I recommend the book to you, it is not as boring as another books regarding this issue, in addition it is cheap.
Great Book.......2007-03-08
This is a great book. Wish there was something like this for relational(3NF) modeling as well.

very bad.... .......2006-12-11
whatever pioneer or genius he is in the DW industry, the book is pretty bad, i wouldn't recommend it at all. the way he tries to convey concepts, explain techniques....
very bad organization, not clear but confusing sometimes, and very poor logical flow... he tries to make a big deal out of DW, when in fact it's not such a fancy or intellect intensive subject. very simple concepts are even hard to understand. someone else would be able to write a book more powerful and straight to the point in 100 pages MAX, and be much more useful....
it sucks when leaders don't know how to express themselves, maybe he was looking forward to have readers learn enough in DW to get projects started but not be able to do squat, and get some business from consulting...
Book Description
This book is a must read for anyone deploying BusinessObjects. It covers everything from planning your upgrade to the latest release, to best practices in universe design, and powerful report creation that maximizes business insight. This book covers the most frequently used features for the full BI suite, in one comprehensive book. There's in depth coverage of Designer, security via the Central Management Console, InfoView, Web Intelligence, and Desktop Intelligence. It goes beyond step-by-step instructions to cover how and why in a business context. Transition notes are interspersed for version 5 and 6 customers to understand the biggest changes in XI Release 2. If you drive BI requirements in your company or are a data warehouse program manager, Business Objects administrator, report author or consumer, this book is for you.
Customer Reviews:
Business Objects Reference.......2007-07-30
If you are new to Business Objects and need a good understanding of what Business objects does and can do then this is an excellent book. Where I work we have purchased several copies of this book. Doesn't go into tremendous detail on how to do some of the more complicated concepts of Business Objects but is more than enough to get you started.
Wretched.......2007-05-12
I bought the book hoping to get a sound overview of BusinessObjects - what it is, how it works, and how to use it. Instead, I found a combination of marketing gibberish and user documentation that has been recycled and updated so many times that it no longer makes any sense.
This book might be useful for folks who already know some version of BusinessObjects and are looking for a refresher. But if you're trying to learn what BusinessObjects is all about, this book is a very expensive waste of money.
General knowledge.......2007-04-02
I've been implementing and supporting BO since version 4.0.3, so I've read a few BO manuals over the years. It's difficult to encompass all the functionality of BO XI R2 into a single manual without turning it into a multi-volume text. This is a very good reference covering the major ground work of the new BO version. I recommend it as the starting point for all old and new users of BO, especially given the fact that they've totally rewired our favourite BI tool. And didn't it need it!
Good overall book.......2007-03-09
It is a great book to give you an overview of the product from a user's perspective. Recommended for universe designers. Although it doesn't go in detail on best practices. This coupled with reading the business objects documentation online (which is REALLY good) shoulg get you pretty far.
Best reference out there..........2006-12-27
As a BOXI r2 user, I have referred to this book a great number of times on the job. It is an indispensable reference tool which has helped me immensely. The chapter on formulas (I think it is chap 22) is especially well written. I highly recommend this to anyone who uses the XI r2 version of Business Objects.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference.......2007-09-05
I've never found these type of books all that useful (certainly not something you read cover to cover), but this one does have great organization and an emphasis on the project management aspect (not just some techie jibber jabber which is out of date in a year).
I use it mostly to help me clarify with sr. management why our BI department is doing what it's doing, expected benefits and risks. It helps explain why it is important to do all the ground work. Even if we aren't given time and resources to do it, it helps me keep my eye on the ball, not lose sight of objectives, and work in good best practices whenever possible.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is entrenched in BI projects on a regular basis.
Excellent book - for beginners..........2007-07-18
The author has well organized the contents, and provided a clear explanation of each of the topics (each topic is a step/phase in the overall BI implementation methodology).... Has a project plan template also...
Good book for beginners in Data warehousing / BI.
Great for a PM.......2007-05-11
Am currently in the process of executing a DW/BI project, my background is JAVA application Project management. This book has been great in getting me upto speed on the basic architecture and lingo of BI/DW.
Book lays out step by step the different parts to a DW. The front office, the back office, meta data repository. Highlights how DW/BI phases are different from other application dev phases. It doesn't go into how to do data modelling - for this get the lifecycle toolkit. But it gives a great overview of planning a BI/DW initiative. Much better than the pure Project Management books.
To get a complete picture I'd use this book along with the Toolkit book.
Good organized document.......2007-01-11
I like this book, its easy to read it...
Good document
Good Practical advice.......2007-01-09
The book offers good practical advice that can be used in the development of a Business Intelligence (BI) project / initiative. The over all road map provides a check list of issues to consider and offers a place to start in planning your own initiative. It is a good reference for individuals starting a BI project for the first time.

Business Objects: The Complete Reference .......2007-05-14
I have not gotten through the entire book yet but so far it has addressed all my needes. I found it to be more than just a reference manual. It takes you through eash aspect of the product in a fair amount of detail. It also give you best practices, the kind of thing I would hope to get in classroom instruction.
A real Time Killer - - - No Meat and all gravy.......2006-09-27
I have to say I was really excited when I picked up this book but now that I am almost through the book ...... I wonder how the hell did I have to patience to read the entire book without tossing it into the bin ..... well may be I wanted to to get something out of it for my money's worth ..... This book is not bad its just not what you would expect from the complete refrence series .... ABSOLUTELY NO MEAT ..... hell I could have written a book by copying and modifying the language from the USER Manuals ........ You don't learn something when the author just tells you "OK drop this menu and select this option" unless you are going to tell me why am I selecting this option ..... sry but I have to be harsh on this .... when you are writing a book a such a good software you need to be in really top form with an excellent command on everything ........ In the end "READ THIS IF YOUR COMPANY BUYS IT FOR YOU AND DON"T SPEND MRE THAN 2 DAYS ON THIS"
Excellent Resource for "newbies" .......2006-03-14
I found the sections on the history of Busines Objects and the background on Business Intelligence very helpful. The only missing component is a CD for the report exercises.
Wonderful resource!.......2004-01-27
I was thrilled when I heard that a book was being published on Business Objects! After getting a copy of Cindi Howson's book, I was even more pleased!
It is truly a very comprehensive guide on how to use Business Objects. It does a good job of explaining the concepts behind business intelligence as well the the different Business Objects products.
I think every person who uses Business Objects would benefit from owning this book! I recommend it through our local user group and to all of my clients!
Business Objects: The Complete Reference.......2003-06-15
As a reference guide, the book is extremely valuable. I have seen other books on this subject that are essentially a copy of the help guide. Not to mention that the pricing is 2 to 3 times what a normal book would cost.
The examples are good and the index is pretty complete. A test for a good reference book is that you can readily find the solution to a particular problem. Ms. Howson's book certainly fits the bill.
It would have been nice to have more how to descriptions and practical solutions to common business problems.
Customer Reviews:
Good information, but disorganized Exercises.......2007-03-21
This book has good information, and is fairly well organized. I like the examples in every section of the chapter.
However, a lot of the Exercises are not very well presented. For example, one exercise section had about 5 exercises. Exercise 2 references 1. 3 references 1. 4 references 2. 4 references 1. 5 reference 4 AND 2. When I was doing exercise 5 it took me 15 minutes to figure out just what it was asking, and I'm still not sure that I got it right. I've never seen any other book chain reference like that before. In my opinion, referencing should make you look at no more than one other contiguous and non-further-referencing block of information.
I love this book!.......2006-03-01
I bought this book because it was assigned as the primary textbook for a database course. But I have also consulted this book in courses on data structures and algorithms, computer organization, operating systems, programming languages, and even knowledge-based systems (the section on data mining).
The book is not always easy to read, because the material is not easy. The authors write very clearly, and give many good examples to illustrate their points.
I like the clean layout of the book. I appreciate that it does not have the gratuitous, gimmicky, irritating graphics and sidebars that some authors of computer science textbooks think they have to throw in to keep us amused.
Worst Book in the world! Not recommend!.......2005-04-22
Very very poorly written book.
I would say, this book is "pointer book". It always refer to examples many pages back where you have to flip back and forth and gets repetitive and you will get dizzy and don't get anything at the end. You won't get the information (key word) that you need just reading the topic. Again, it always back and forward.
Explanation, calculation of eg. are not clear, and organize. Numbers are suddendly appeared and doesn't explain how to get it or where to get. Overall, the worst book and I'm very sorry for the students that using that book.
Understanding Databases.......2004-11-30
This book helps you understand how databases works. The second half of the book explains how data is stored (100 pages), how indexes are built (100 pages), query processing (150 pages), transaction management (100 pages), and durability and recovery (50 pages). This is one of the best book, if not the best, on database implementation.
The first half of the book is about databases from the user's perspective (e.g. SQLs). Although I was mainly interested in the second half, I found the first half to be an excellent reference on SQL.
Poorly written book.......2004-09-29
This is one of the worst books ever written about database systems. The writing is unclear and poorly written. Examples are presented too complex for readers to clearly understand what is going on. It even refers to examples many pages back where you have to flip back and forth and gets repetitive. There is also no clear drawings or diagrams that help the reader understand what the author is trying to point out. Overall a very poor book and not worth the time spent in reading and figuring out what is going on.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly Organized, Examples Don't Work.......2003-04-26
I rarely criticize a text book, but for this one I must make an exception. My biggest complaint is that the examples are full of errors and the procedures are incomplete - leaving out critical steps to make the procedures work. For someone trying to learn Websphere from scratch, this poses an insurmountable obstacle to learning this topic. This indicates to me a rush job putting this book to press and failure to proofread the textbook and failure to test the examples.
I could go on, but the shortcomings already expressed are, in my opinion, justification for avoiding this book.
Not enough detail.......2002-12-31
This book is good at covering a wide range of details, but I wouldn't recommend it for an in-depth knowledge of Websphere, especially if you're a developer.
Little bit of everything.......2002-12-12
I had a very frustrating experience with this book. All I wanted to do was to try install a simple web application with a welcome page and a servlet just to get a feel. But i could not do it easily. The topic of Servlets and JSP is split across many sections with each chapter of 4-5 pages. I would have loved it if all of them had been clubbed together so I could atleast say that I know now everything on servlets. The book has over 40 chapters and tries to cover everything that IBM has to offer. Not for someone wishing to master the WebSphere Application Server. No way. I have used the WebLogic bible before and it was great.
Great source of information.......2002-10-16
We were looking for a book that would encompass a broad range of web application related features and this book really came through! I was especially glad to see Web services and J2EE discussed, and in an easy to understand, well written format. I am planning to keep track of upcoming work from the same authors!
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more not only about the websphere application server, but some other new and exciting technologies as well.
Loved the examples!
Great reference - best for developers.......2002-09-22
Very good all round coverage, very complete. I give it 5 stars for development topics and for deployment topics and somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for administration topics. Much more readable than the redbooks.

Database Administration: The Complete Guide to Practices and Procedures .......2007-09-30
Database Administration: The Complete Guide to Practices and Procedures was delivered sucessfully. I enjoy the book.
used book for the iccp database administration exam.......2007-01-10
This was a good introductory book about all the different
terms and concepts in generic database administration.
This book does more to cover from the managers perspective of all the
extra stuff that managers would think about in terms of data
loss, disaster recovery, recovery, etc.
The DBA Book.......2006-04-06
I've forgotten how many times I've recommended this book to people. It's well written, to the point, and covers the topics that you need to know to become an effective DBA.
- Scott Ambler
Thought Leader, Agile Data Method
Highly Recommended.......2003-07-19
This is a well-written, well-organized guide to the practice of data base administration. Unlike other books on general database theory or relational database theory, this book focuses more directly on the theory and reality of database administration as practiced by database professionals today, and does so without catering too much to any specific product implementation. As such, Database Administration is very well suited to anyone interested in surveying the job of a DBA or those in similar but more specific roles such as data modeler or database performance analyst.
Yet, even with that direct focus on database administration, the author succeeds in covering a great deal of ground and cutting a rather wide swathe across the database spectrum, doing so with rigor and expertise and the benefit of experience. While the book will not and is not intended to serve as a reference substitute for product documentation, it will nonetheless enhance your knowledge, and I find it of such quality and utility that I recommend it to anyone in the database field in general. Consider it a base text to serve alongside Date and Codd.
Among the nice touches, the author includes discussion of database denormalization, often missing in discussions on database design. Chapters end with both a set of review questions and a Suggested Reading section, and I find myself in agreement with most of the suggestions. An excellent Bibliography section follows the text. I would have liked to see some discussion of the difference between relational domains in theory and their implementation in practice, particularly as it impacts the design of integrity constraints. Even so, Database Administration is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
- Sal Ricciardi
A great referecne on database administration.......2002-07-08
1. This is one of very few titles on general database administration. Most other similar books focus on particular DBMS products.
2. It has a very comprehensive and broad coverage on the subject. The table of contents speaks for itself. Due to its extensiveness, the coverage by and large stays at the strategic and conceptual level, which serves its purpose very well.
3. It compares features of major database products on handling similar jobs.
4. The author clearly has extensive real life DBA experience with different DBMS products and has shared that with a very easy to understand language.
5. It has good resource links.
6. This book would be a great introduction and reference to those who are not only interested in a particular DBMS product but would also like to have a holistic view of database administration.
7. Finally the book has 660 pages before the index rather than 352 pages as stated on this site.

J. D. Edwards OneWorld, A developer's Guide.......2002-10-24
This is an excellent reference for a OneWorld developer. It is a good compendium of JDE documentation and tips from the real world. The only complaint that I have about the book is that it sometimes sounds like it was written by a JDE cheerleading section and some of the flaws of the product are glossed over. It will not make you a OneWorld developer, but it will make you a better OneWorld developer.
Very good book, not latest Xe version, not complete.......2001-04-22
Better and thinner than JDE official manuals, well balanced between concept and details. Give good big pictures on architecture and some useful step by step technical procedures on administration, maybe not enough on troubleshooting. OneWorld Xe version have a lot of improvement, this book will be excellent if keeping update with Xe version.

Experience shows.......2006-05-23
I've been documenting IMS- and DB2-related products for almost 20 years. I had the pleasure of working with Dean Meltz on a long ago version of IMS, and knew then that his knowledge of the database was detailed and comprehensive.
I'm so glad that he was able to put much of that knowledge into one, easy-to-understand IMS primer. While many IMS gurus are retiring, and replacements are hard to find, I think this book is a staple for any IMS shop. This is not an operator's reference. (IMS already has a good one of those.) But it does provide a good overview of database structure and design and explains key points well, with very good illustrations.
This book is a much needed addition to IMS literature. I'm sure it will stand the test of decades, just as the database has done.
Excellent introduction for IMS beginners; Handy reference for Old-Timers .......2005-11-02
After giving a very brief history of IMS, the authors give us a guided tour of its extensive capabilities.
You will learn that IMS has continually evolved from its roots as a hierarchical database to an industrial strength transaction manager that services both SNA and TCP/IP and supports Java, XML and SQL access via stored procedures.
This book does not attempt to describe every nuance of all the IMS features. Instead, it touches upon each capability and discusses the most-used functions. If there is more to know, the reader is directed to the applicable IMS manuals (available on the web).
You can sit down and read this book cover to cover, or you can reference individual chapters to find out what you need, when you need it.
This reference will be close at hand on my bookshelf.
"Must Have" book for any IT professional dealing with IMS .......2005-06-28
This is the most complete reference book for IMS I have ever seen.
