Book Description
Can you find your digital photographs when you need them, or do you spend more time rifling through your hard drive and file cabinets than you'd like? Do you have a system for assigning and tracking content data on your photos? If you make a living as a photographer, do your images bear your copyright and contact information, or do they circulate in the marketplace unprotected?
As professional photographer and author Peter Krogh sees it, "your DAM system is fundamental to the way your images are known, both to you and to everyone else." DAM, or Digital Asset Management, in the world of digital photography refers to every part of the process that follows the taking of the picture, through final output and permanent storage. Anyone who shoots, scans or stores digital photographs, is practicing some form of digital asset management. Unfortunately, most of us don't yet know how to manage our files (and our time) very systematically, or efficiently.
In The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers, Krogh brings clarity to the often overwhelming task of managing digital photographs, with a solid plan and practical advice for fellow photographers on how to file, find, protect and re-use photographs. Following a thorough overview of the DAM system and de-mystifications of metadata and digital archiving, Krogh focuses on best practices for digital photographers using Adobe Photoshop CS2. He explains how to use Adobe Bridge, the new CS2 navigational software that replaces the File Browser introduced in Photoshop 7, with full details on integrating Bridge, Camera Raw and Digital Asset Management software.
Compellingly presented in four-color format, The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers brings Krogh's award-winning creative approach to a subject that could have been technically intimidating. Instead, Krogh's twenty years of experience and instructive visual storytelling make this material not only accessible, but compulsory reading for serious digital photographers.
Customer Reviews:
Organization!.......2007-08-31
This is a good book. It is very helpful in determining how to organize photographs. It also is a give a good review of Bridge. It would be nice for the book to be up dated to cover CS3.
An Excellent Overview.......2007-03-31
I found this book to be an excellent resource to help you to understand how all the pieces fit together.
Indespensable Reference for management & storage of digital photos............2007-03-18
As a novice in the area of digital asset management, I found this book to be extremely helpful.....well written and full of great suggestions on how best to manage your photos. Highly recommended.......a true five-star guide.
HIghly Recommended.......2007-03-08
Helps you learn how to deal with all the digital photography photos that amass on your hard drive. Do you save them as JPEG , RAW, both? What about DNG? How do you tag, and archive these files? Why would I do it this way? It's important to know when your files reach into the thousands!! Do you want to lose your data or save it as an inferior file? I hope this book gets updated yearly.
Once good, now seriously outdated and needlessly complex.......2007-03-02
The DAM Book was probably much needed when it was first published - its publication coincided with a realization by many professional and serious amateur photographers that handling the quickly growing digital photo collections required a sound organizing approach and dedicated software tools. The book aptly points out that dealing with digital image workflow and the resulting file archives is in many significant ways different than dealing with film-based archives. Based on this initial premise, the book offers recommendations on how to organize digital photo studio workflow and filing / archive system.
Alas, the author chose to tie VERY CLOSELY his mostly sensible conceptual framework (i.e., HOW to organize) with very specific software and hardware. Often, more general advice is difficult or impossible to separate from his step-by-step, software-specific recipes. So, unless you use exactly the same software and hardware configuration as the author, much, if not most of this information will be of little use.
Since the book was first published, new, DAM- and photographic workflow-oriented software has become available (Adobe CS3, including the new Bridge is now in public beta nearing its release; and Apple Aperture 1.5 and Adobe PS Ligtroom 1.0 are the new, more workflow-focused tools), and more up-to-date (although dispersed) discussion of problems in question can be found in numerous articles on the web. This makes large portions of the book obsolete, as new tools enable different workflows that may be better suited to many photographers' preferences.
The book has other issues.
First, the author LOVES using technical jargon. While technical vocabulary is appropriate in discussing technical issues, creating new terms and elaborate taxonomies for everything is an overkill. The author's misguided argument for using "controlled vocabularies" (a common term, which he uses in his own, very peculiar way - p. 47) is a good case in point. As Eric Abrahamson (Columbia Business School) aptly points out in his excellent book "A Perfect Mess," organizing is always good in principle, but OVER ORGANIZING by creating systems more complex than it is necessary to get the job done, comes at a very steep price in time and resources needed to maintain the system. Enough said.
Secondly, since this is a workflow book (not a coffee-table book), the full color print is totally unnecessary, and the price point is consequently too high. This should have been one of those $9.95 O'Reilly quick-guide booklets. Most photos reproduced in the book are simply decorative, or used as examples for things that are obvious (e.g. an example of a "group shot" - duh!; or a photo of wine barrels in a cellar as a metaphor for file storage system). Photos are not interesting on their own merit; screen captures and simple diagrams would be just as effective in greyscale.
In summary, you may want to flip through the pages of the book at a local library or bookstore - what's really useful and noteworthy here, can be easily grasped in less than 15 minutes; otherwise, your money may be better spent on a good book focused on the actual software tools YOU are committed to using.

Great book !.......2006-08-07
There are several books on Content Management Systems (CMS). But there are only very few books on the market covering the topic of Digital asset management (DAM). Three books stands out:
"Professional Content Management System: handling Digital Media Assets", "Digitial Asset Management: how to realize value of video and image libaries" and "Expanding a Digital Content Management System: for the Growing Digital Media Enterprise".
Each book describes the subject in different perspectives. The "Digitial Asset Management: how to realize value of video and image libaries" by David Austerberry is more like introduction to DAM and related concepts and technologies. While "Expanding a Digital Content Management System: for the Growing Digital Media Enterprise" by my former collegaue and friend, Magan Authur is discussing how to plan and implement a large scale digital content management systems.
The Professional Content Management Systems by A Mathure and P. Thomas empersizes much more on (and deeper in) technical and applicaiton design aspects. Besides the basic concepts, it covers a wide range of topics on DAM from user requirements;video production use cases and workflows; media formats and standards; system architecture and integrations; hardware infrastructure and application requirements. The deepth of the discusions on systems architecture of both software and hardware are incrediable. The application modules and use cases scenarios presented for broadcasting industry are very well illustrated. The book reveals fully the authors vivid imagation, creative and industry experience.
Even though I may not completely agree with every piece of the design described in the book, some of the core concepts and use cases described are really valuable. (I have built one of succussful commercial enterprise DAM system used by by many large enterpises in broadcasting, advertising and Coorporate Marketing before this book was published).
I especially recommend this book to Product Managers and System Architect who are trying to build a DAM system; or trying to build applications on top of the DAM System. I have read ths book twice since I brought it over 1 year ago. It's still very refreshing to read it.
disclaimer: I have no association with the authors of the book (don't know them) or BlueOrder.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide (Tim Grey Guides)
ASIN: 059610099X |
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated and eminently practical book is the first to offer a complete tour of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1, the integrated digital photography workflow application that allows serious photographers to import, select, develop and showcase large volumes of digital images. Augmented by photos and case studies from a demanding road test in Iceland, award-winning photographer Mikkel Aaland explains how Lightroom 1.1 can improve the way you work.
After watching -- and often helping -- Adobe create Lightroom entirely from the ground up, Aaland (author of
Photoshop CS2 RAW) was ready to see how well it would do in the field. He organized a group of 12 top-notch photographers for a trek to "Nature's Light Room", the pristine Icelandic landscape where each summer day is bathed in 22 hours of horizontal light -- and where the only studio was Lightroom on a laptop. In
Photoshop Lightroom Adventure, Aaland uses hands-on knowledge from the trip to demonstrate how Lightroom 1.1 can help you create the best possible image under any conditions.
This unique tutorial walks you step-by-step through Lightroom's:
- Library module for uploading, sorting, tagging, ranking and adding keywords to your images
- Develop module with Adobe Camera RAW for complete non-destructive color and tonal adjustments
- Slideshow module, where you select and size images, and export the show to HTML, Flash, or PDF formats
- Print module, which includes several templates for printing contact sheets or full images
- Web module, where you can create Flash or HTML web galleries
With many gorgeous examples shot in the soft natural light of Iceland, this book lets you see the results for yourself. Mikkel Aaland's trademark ability to teach complicated topics on digital imaging with straightforward, easy-to-follow text makes this book a valuable learning tool for anyone serious about digital photography. This is not an update of previous Lightroom versions, but the first book written specifically with Lightroom 1.1 in mind.

Great Inspiration for any artist.......2007-09-21
Great book, not only from a reading perspective, but from an art
perspective. The book is beautiful, inspiring, and informative. I
really enjoyed the read, and the pictures are fabulous. Initially,
when I requested a review copy, I thought it was for Photoshop CS3, I
was unaware that Adobe made software called Lightroom. I have a Mac
with Apeture, which is similar to Lightroom, but I downloaded
Lightroom and tried it out as I read through the book. I love the way
the book tells a story as well as teaches you about the software.
Mikkel does a great job teaching about the software, I learned a
great deal about the software and found that I really like it. The
imagery in the book is breathtaking and, Mikkel really helped me
develop my photography eye further to make my images much more
appealing. I thought the book not only teaches you how to use the
software, but also how to critique photos.
Lightroom Adventure.......2007-09-17
Terrific book. It explains everything you would want to know about Lightroom. I'm particularly pleased that Mikel Aaland delayed the book to include the 1.1 upgrade to Lightroom. The book is well laid out, with lots of photos and illustrations. The format is easy to read and specific info is easy to find, if, like me, you want to read up on a particular topic rather than read the book from front to back.
Take your workflow to a new level.......2007-09-03
I highly recommend this book if you are serious about using Lightroom to take your work flow to a new level. I have read multiple online tutorials and watched multiple video Podcast on Lightroom but this book will help "fill" in the gaps with the online tutorials. This was the first book I found that addressed v 1.1. All other versions deal with 1.0 and if you are a user of v 1.1 you know there are differences within the versions.
It does not have the humor built in as Scott Kelby's books but I found this book to answer many questions I had concerning Lightroom. I have been using lightroom on a nearly daily basis since early 07.
save your money.......2007-08-29
purchased this on the recommendation of Reichman at Luminous Landscape--the photographer was part of the Iceland team that is central to the book. Book is superficial at best--not worth the money even if there are numerous beautiful images throughout. The author simply glosses over every bit of the application-a very shallow intro to a very powerful product!! Better to invest in any (better yet all!) of the vastly superior books by Tim Grey, Scott Kelby, or Martin Evening--not only do these other writers provide a more thorough intro but they also share wonderful insights as to how the appplication can be used. find one of these other books before spending a penny on this one!
Great photographs of Iceland, Not a Great Book on Lightroom.......2007-08-23
A lot of big egos with a number of the contributors pushing the book and themselves and their
own sites and workshops (see Luminous-Landscape). If the actual photographs, even at low resolution, were part
of the exercises, this book, which is too much about alpha and beta testing the product on a junket for Adobe, would make sense.

Book Description
Content and media asset management systems are core back office applications of the modern day broadcaster, yet there is little information available on the control and management of these systems and how content can be delivered over a variety of different channels: television, iTV, internet, webcasting, mobile phones and wireless PDAs. This book explains the potential for applying asset management systems to content creation models for distribution over a variety of outlets and the benefits gained from increased efficiency and lowering of costs.
Taking an unbiased view and focusing on core principles rather than specific systems, David Austerberry presents the business case for digital asset management systems, demystifies some assumptions regarding the technology and provides a thorough introduction to the system components required, such as indexing, searching, middleware, database and rightsmanagement and web portals.
*Demystifies the underlying technologies of media asset management
*Explains the processes and operations involved in setting up a media asset management system
*Provides an unbiased view of the leading systems

Didn't really say much.......2007-01-07
This book just didn't really say that much. I don't know how else to put it. I guess that means that my review won't really say much. :-) It feels like it was written as an executive summary for executives who want to know the buzzwords and acronyms so they can sound like they know what Digital Asset Management is. It was really odd when the author went into a little bit of detail about the technology, of course it didn't really say anything, but it was just enough to make one sound like an idiot.

Customer Reviews:
Niche material for a niche market.......2007-01-05
Creating and establishing a viable digital asset management system is difficult at best. When a group of creatives--writers, photographers, animators, artists, composers, editors and the like--attempt to put a DAM together to please their company's owners, anything can happen. And it rarely turns out well. If you are in this situation, this book could help your case. However, my own experience--attempting to establish DAM in a 25-person graphics and video production organization that operates within a strict corporate IT framework--indicates DAM is a stupidly tough sell, even in a free-thinking environment of highly creative personnel. Entrenched, dumb and worst-possible practices are difficult to change regardless of the validity of your research.
This book's quality content is logically presented and documented in a scholarly fashion with a complete appendix of references and a thorough index. The authors present many success stories and interviews that alone are worth the cost of the book. There are additional case studies in each chapter to help illustrate the more subtle aspects of digital asset management. The workflow suggestions, definitions, planning matrices and implementation timelines are terrific. You will also appreciate the author's return on investment arguments. The suggestions on how to design and conduct your DAM implementation schedule are specific to the creative industries but, if you are reviewing DAM practices for any other market application, you will benefit from this information simply because there just isn't enough objective stuff out there. I looked.
A minor shortcoming: while there is an imaginary "animation company without DAM" disaster scenario, I would have liked to have seen much more information about real world failures and stupid DAM mistakes. In-depth studies of expensive disasters can be illuminating, especially if you are trying to present a case for DAM to your own management.
I recommend this book if you really need the industry-specific information. You might also benefit from this content if you are studying or researching DAM for your own company, whatever your field might be. Adapting the visual and creative arts-specific information to your own industry will take a little bit of imagination.

Preface; Introduction; What Can Asset Management Do for You?; Assess Your Individual Situation; Plan What You Need; Find the Right Solution; Implement the Solution; Success Stories; Appendix (Product Overview, Glossary, Further Reading & Links)
-----------
My comment:
The book facilitates streamlining digital content management from the point-of-view of a) Digital media; b) Internet entertainment industry; and c) Project management.
The strength of the book is as precise as the title: It is a handbook for implementation of DAMS - focused in three areas, viz., animation, games and Web-based perspectives.
The only negative aspect in trying to be too detailed and exhaustive (and hence three Star), the book may run a risk of loosing some readers --for e.g., it may be highly useful for only one category (not everyone): learners, developers, educators, etc. One should not forget that meaning, message, context and inference all need a just balance for any level of audience, as well as, for value-added content. Hence, in a revised version, the authors, may consider catering to any one audience -- with due consideration for their specific needs.
Nevertheless, in addition, to students, and hands-on-guide for the beginners in digital asset management industry, this book, is also an informative source for other techies in the fields of database management, knowledge management, information systems specialists, business developers, indpendent information professionals, etc.

Book Description
Effective, efficient management of all kinds of new digital content is becoming crucial for television groups and stations in the digital age. This clear, concise report addresses emerging technologies designed to capture, archive, retrieve, repurpose, and format digitally enhanced "rich" content. This publication is the first of its kind to examine the "digital assembly line" for content creation and distribution.
Digital Content Management covers Media Asset Management (MAM) of the programming production processes that occur prior to distribution as well as Content Managment (CM) system that focus on the distribution process, the grooming, formatting, protecting, and tracking of digital material that is transmitted to third parties and consumers outside the protective enclosure of a digital production facility's firewall. Book Description
Protect and Maximize Your Company's Digital Assets>P>
Security is a critical concern for every company, organization, and institution, regardless of their size or activity. In this timely book, leading security and privacy expert Thomas J. Parenty demystifies computer and network security for non-technical managers-taking them beyond hackers, firewalls, and virus protection to outline a holistic approach to information security that promotes business growth.
Drawing from more than twenty years of experience in the computer security and cryptography fields, Parenty introduces the "Trust Framework," a unique and straightforward approach to developing and implementing a corporate security process.
The Trust Framework is based on two core principles: 1) every technology choice must be closely linked to a company's overall mission and specific business activities; and 2) a company needs to show its partners and customers why they should have trust in their electronic business transactions. Parenty guides managers in clearly articulating their specific business requirements, selecting the appropriate security technologies, and building an organizational environment that promotes and nurtures trust.
An entirely new era of information security is underway-and it is changing the rules of business for every industry. Digital Defense guides managers in implementing security solutions that both protect their firms' current digital assets-and pave the way for future business innovation.
" Digital Defense is an important book whose message is: Pay attention to information security! Tom Parenty offers a balanced and detailed assessment of why information security is such a critical priority and concisely lays out practical steps toward better protecting your assets. This book is compelling for the general reader and the IT specialist alike."
-Karen Sutter, Director, Business Advisory Services, US-China Business Council
"Digital Defense is an important book with a powerful message on information security issues. Non-technical executives, whose organizations are increasingly dependent on information systems, would do well to read this book."
-Seymour E. Goodman, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology
"In this exceptionally well-written and readable book, Tom Parenty explains the need to tie security to business objectives and organizational missions. Unlike any other book in the market, Digital Defense guides readers through security valuation and introduces a trust framework companies can follow to ensure that organization and partner assets are protected."
-Daryl F. Eckard, EDS Director, Security and Privacy Professional Services
Customer Reviews:
outside access to sensitive information.......2004-02-24
Digital Defense is written primarily for the corporate security professional and the IT professional. However, throughout it, Parteny sets out case after case, situation and situation, where outsiders can gain access to competitively sensitive data.
Some of the cases involve breaking the law; others involve violating contractual relations. But a significant number involve employee and contractor carelessness. In doing that, he illustrates the very reasons why companies concerned about improving physical and IT security to protect competitively sensitive data also need to develop and maintain a defensive CI process to supplement them. All three programs should, and can, work together to protect corporate information assets.

A "must-read" computer protection manual.......2003-12-08
Knowledgeably written by Thomas J. Parenty (a computer security expert of twenty years' experience), Digital Defense: What You Should Know About Protecting Your Company's Assets is a straightforward guide to protecting business information. Parenty stresses that it is the data itself, not the computers that store it, that is the most vital consideration when developing and implementing security systems and protocols. Digital Defense goes beyond such common measures as firewalls and virus protection software, to offers a corporate security process called the "Trust Framework" which is uniquely adapted and fine-tuned for the digital world. Simply put, Digital Defense is a "must-read" computer protection manual filled from cover to cover with invaluable and applicably technical information explained in terms expressly intended for non-specialist readers concerned with the security of their company's informational assets.
Really useful approach to a difficult problem.......2003-10-17
Reading this book has broadened the way I think about solutions to security. Dispensing with technical detail and unrealistic recommendations that sometimes appear in books of this nature, Mr. Parenty gives practical and highly usable instruction to realistically implement practical electronic security in a way that can solve the complete problem. He describes a process-oriented solution to security by identifying methods to identify and maintain security-related information and then guides us through how to secure that information. This is different than the too-typical method of buying more security products, throwing them at an undefined problem, and hoping they work. Under his paradigm, security-related products become a tool to enforce corporate security policy rather than the tools creating policies themselves, which seems to be the real solution to both large and small security issues.
I think that the reader could use the ideas presented in this book in nearly any organization and have a high expectation of success, without hiring a large group of pricey consultants to make it happen.
I expect that this book will become a significant contributor to the security literature and would highly recommend it. If you are looking for a product-oriented solution to security threats though, this book won't provide the information you want.
Excellent security introduction for the decision makers.......2003-09-03
The biggest problem with properly implementing a security policy is not the technical one of securing digital resources, but instead the organizational problem of having the decision makers sufficiently aware of the problem to guide the implementation to succeess.
Tom Parenty gives an excellent overview of the real-world security problem, drawing from what is obviously years of experience in the trenches helping businesses and government organizatoins implement successful security strategies. A must read for all management types with digital assets to protect.
