Very poor publication.......2007-05-18
Unless you like "Batman" styled comic book illuistrations and print so fine you would need at least a 10X magnifier to read the simulated pages with the information one would supposedly find in a Vista window don't order this book. It is the worst "How To" book I have ever seen and I have read many many books. Ruth P OConnor

Visual Microsoft Office 2007 text.......2007-06-08
This book works well when you have your application open and can match book page to your window screen! Glad I ordered the online pdf file with it! Makes it even handier -- no need to cart a book around!
Simple to digest.......2007-05-22
The Visual series is the best for my right-brain way of thinking.
Teach Yourself Visually Microsoft Office 2007.......2007-03-22
Very informative. Good for new or experienced Office users. Recommend to help get started on Office 2007 as there are several updates in this edition. Handy to be able to refer to a book and it will walk you thru it step by step.
Pros and Cons on Teach Yourself VISUALLY Microsoft Office 2007 .......2007-03-10
I found this book useful as a general overview guide to Teaching Myself VISUALLY Microsoft Office 2007. The book did not go into details in any of the sections, and it did not deal with some of the minor or advanced sections of the COMPLETE Office 2007 program, however, I do recommend it as a reasonable investment to get a quick handle on the program. It greatly helps in the transition from the old format of Office which we had from 1997 through 2003, into the new 'ribbon' format. I recommend it, but do not expect that it will answer ALL of your questions, or solve all of your change-over aches and pains. However, because I strongly believe that NOW is the time to change to a new Office system, this book is well worth the money. Go for it!

Customer Reviews:
Pleased with my book.......2007-09-16
We have been pleased with Amazon ordering books online. My college students purchase new and used books all the time. The review of the book is accurate, the shipping reasonable and the turnaround time for delivery is sufficient. I recently purchased a book on knitting and was very pleased with the product. No complaints so far.
Very Helpful for visual learners.......2007-07-18
If you learn best by reading and then visualizing concepts, then this book is for you. The directions and visuals are great and really appealed to the way that I learn things. I also like that there are many different stitches in this book and that all of them have been swatched so that you can see very clearly what they are supposed to look like in case yours is not the same. The photographs are incredible and so very helpful. This book goes beyond just being for beginners and is a great reference too.
Great Resource for a first-time knitter.......2007-06-06
I am definitely still a beginner and I still use this book as a wonderful resource for all of my questions and (oopsy) mistakes. I actually taught myself how to knit through the use of this book- it just makes sense in a way that all of the other books I used didn't. The frame by frame shots are especially helpful, as well as the explanations and photos. As I am still starting out and fairly bad at this new hobby, I am thankful that I was able to find such a helpful resource! I definitely refer to this each time I start a new project- you will not be disappointed!
TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY KNITTING.......2007-05-31
I WAS HOPEING THIS WOULD OF BEEN A BIT MORE VISUAL ON SOME OF THE STICHES.
Knitting Encyclopedia.......2007-05-13
Love this book. It has actual full-color photographs of hands doing what you want to accomplish so when you look up a stitch or a method, it is very easy to follow along -- even for a lefty like me. If I were only allowed to have one book on techniques, this is the one I would select.

I feel that I am somewhat computer illiterate, and this book was recommended to me. It is great - mainly because the visuals help point you in the right direction.
Clear, concise, easy to use.......2007-03-14
Although we make extensive use of laptops in our photography business, I am learning many new things that I can do with Windows XP to make our laptops run better and faster and to access programs more quickly. This wonderful little book is very clear, with illustrations that are easy to see and follow. Highly recommended.
Good Book.......2007-02-24
I am taking a class on windows XP second edition and this is the text. I find it to be easy to understand and am learning things I did not know even though I haveused XP for sometime. I would buy other teach yourself books.
Teach Yourself Visually.......2007-01-16
This book was excellent in showing the problem you might be having and showing you the answer, exactly the way it was scene as on the computer. I started with my computer in September, 2006 and have never been taught. This book has helped me in full detail. It is written in language you can understand as well as showing you in detail. It will be good for any age. Carol

perfect reference book.......2007-08-24
I love this book. I keep it in my yarn basket next to my recliner. I'm always referring to it. The pictures are clear. No drawings like a lot of books use. This has real clear photos. Very easy to understand. Very well written. I can't recommend this enough. Thanks Kim! I love your book!
Best Beginner Crochet Book .......2007-08-08
People have different learning styles. If you're a visual learner and new to crochet, this is the book to get. I had not crocheted anything in years and needed a good, uncomplicated book to get me going again. I ordered this and "Crocheting for Dummies" which intimidated me a bit with too many words and too few pictures. Both are good books, but "Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting" is the one I am continually refering to for guidance.
Amazing crochet book!.......2007-07-11
I've learned crochet from "Start Crochet / Crochet Basics" by Jan Eaton, a good illustrated book with clear instructions, but I've got bored within few months and stop crochet for more than a year. I decided to start again recently and bought this book. I was surprised after leafing through the pages; I didn't know that so many techniques exist!
I loved the way each technique and pattern is presented: clear step by step photos, pattern explained using crochet terminology and then in plain English. I finally understood the terminologies used in advanced books and on internet projects and now I can easily follow a pattern. Also I found out that I was doing crucial mistakes as result most of my projects weren't looking right as show in the final photos (one of the reasons I've got bored).
A great book for learning crochet but also to have it as a reference no matter at which stage you are.
Happy Customer.......2007-05-13

ASIN: 0470068175 |
Book Description
There are lots of stylish knitting patterns out there, but sometimes you want to do your own thing. Maybe you've found a yarn that would make a beautiful hat, and all you need are basic directions for shaping. Or maybe you've had your eye on a cute sweater in a store window and know that you can make a better version yourself—if you could only figure out the measurements. This handy guide demystifies all that knitting math and shows you how to knit custom-fitted, one-of-a-kind fashions that express your style. Master patterns for hats, sweaters, scarves, shawls, bags, mittens, vests, and socks lay out the basic construction for each item in a range of sizes; you choose the yarn and decide which modifications and customizations you want to make.
Precise master patterns show you all the steps involved in constructing handknits
- Master patterns give instructions for multiple sizes and gauges
- A number of shaping, edgings, and stitch patterns accompany each master pattern
- Helpful tips provide additional guidance
- Tables take the work out of knitting math
- Step-by-step instructions accompany each photo
- Color photos, illustrations, and diagrams demonstrate important concepts
Customer Reviews:
I was shocked, it was done so poorly.......2007-07-07
This book is a little strange, it gives you some good info, and on the other hand, some weird things as well. For instance in the hats section, she only gives gauge for casting on as 2 sts per inch, 3 or 4, but gives up to seven per inch for yardage requirements, and decreasing.
The printing on my copy was quite bad, some pages were blurry, so blurry it hurts my eyes to look at them. A few of the pictures are also slightly blurry.
Lastly, I found the actual garments to show some horrid knitting errors, that really have me wondering who test knitted these things? The gloves are slightly bulbous on the fingertips, the mitten thumbs look like they were made for sausages, and there is a sweater that the sleeves were set in so badly I can't believe they put it in the book, several times. Many of the garments are knitted with uneven gauge, with tight rows of stitches and loose floppy rows. Some of the knitting just looks horrible, and I am rather disappointed at the quality. It appears to have some good stuff in it, but I'm a little afraid to cast on a sweater that has arm joins that are awful, with obvious blaring mistakes all over it. Most of them had some sort of mistake that I could see, and I usually can't see that stuff. I wouldn't pay too much for this book.
Hugs to you, Sharon!.......2007-03-15
I love this book. I used to search high and low for patterns that would suit particular yarns from my (huge) stash. Now I can sit down with yarn, needles, this book, and an idea of what I want to make, and I'm ready to go. Sharon Turner has done all the tedious math in this book so I can focus on the design.
I've made a number of garments with this book already: socks, hats, hand warmers, mittens, and even a sweater (which was a piece of cake!). As I've worked on these knitted items, I've begun to get a much better understanding of knitting (patterns aren't so mysterious after all), and I'm finding that I don't even need the book all the time when I want to create something new. On top of that, I've grown really frustrated with run-of-the-mill patterns because they're often so poorly written and buggy. Why struggle through that when I can use this clear, well-written book to create my own unique items?
Packed with Knitting Patterns.......2007-03-14
This book is an incredibly dense knitting resource. It is literally packed with knitting patterns, techniques and suggestions for individualizing other knitting patterns--written clearly and filled with color images on every page. It covers every possible thing you could want to knit (hats, scarves, mittens, gloves, sweaters, bags) but in every size from baby to adult male, and in several different gauges for each category! It breaks each thing down into steps so that you can choose one type of hem, brim or cuff, then choose another shaping style, and so on. All the math is right there. I didn't really realize how knit items could be interchanged in terms of parts like that, and I feel like I have a renewed understanding of how to approach all knitting projects. The only thing I wish it included is how to add a hood to a sweater. Other than that, everything's in this book. A great value.
Knitting and Fashion - Together at Last!.......2007-03-07
As a college student, I am always interested in the current trends. While I had heard for quite some time now that knitting was making a comeback, it seemed difficult to apply this trend to my everyday life. Though the idea of knitting a cute sweater or funky miniskirt always seemed appealing, I have often left knitting shops discouraged at the thought of spending hard-earned money and hours of time only to be left with a frumpy, unfashionable garment.
My mom sent me this book recently hoping it would solve my knitting dilemma, and to my amazement, it has! Though I am by no means the best knitter, this book makes it easy to make the image in my head correspond with the product that emerges from my needles. It is so fun to see a product in an expensive boutique and know that I could make it for half the cost, in a better color no less.
I own Sharon Turner's other two books, and therefore did not need any convincing to explore this latest one she has written. But for anyone who is not certain if this product will suit your needs, I encourage you to buy it and take a look. You won't be sorry!
Last knitting book you'll ever need.......2007-02-06
This is probably the last knitting book I'll ever have to buy. Yay! I spent hours last year searching for a cabled vest pattern and couldn't find exactly what I was envisioning. Then I got this book with directions for every kind of vest, sweater, scarf, bag, hats, mittens and shawls one could possible want. Not only are there all the elements to incorporate into creating one's own patterns for all these items, but Sharon Turner's directions are so clear that even a rather inexperienced knitter (me!) can easily follow them and create the pattern of one's dreams. Sharon even shows you varied stitch patterns. I sincerely recommend this book for every knitter from inexperienced to expert! Joan Parlin

This is the second Teach Yourself Visually book I have used, and it is great, especially if you want to learn things rapidly. The instructions and illustrations are excellent. I highly recccommend it.
A Great Guide! .......2007-08-27
I gave it to a college student who was leaving for St. Lawrence. He was very pleased with the book and the photos will help him with his new computer.
Helpful.......2007-07-15
I got this book to help my parents who just switched from using a PC to a Mac. They had some difficulty adjusting to the Mac that I found myself becoming their tech support person. Since buying this book for them, the tech support calls has decreased and I even got an email saying, that this book was very helpful for them.
A must for every new Mac owner!.......2007-05-10
I am new to the Mac world. I had a PC and could not get around very well on it. Now I have a Macbook and love it! This book is fantastic. It shows you step by step with pictures how to do a task. With this book I was able to set-up my Macbook the way I wanted, organize i-tunes, surf, create files etc.... This book is worth the money for the beginner or even the experienced Mac nut. Super easy to use. Don't buy a book too technical to understand, "Teach Yourself VISUALLY Mac OS X Tiger" is the only way to go. You won't be sorry.

FANTASTIC... EASIER THAN 1,2,3.......2007-08-22
This book was exactly what I was looking for. It's easier than taking a class in PhotoShop. The visual layout makes it so easy to learn the software. It walks you through every step and shows the screen so you know exactly what to look for. Even the most computer illiterate person, like myself, can easily master PhotoShop with the help of this book. I see that some of the other reviews say that it is elementary, but that's exactly what I like about it. It isn't a bunch of hi-tech guru speak that confuses the basic understanding. And if you have it open right next to your computer as you walk through all the processes, it is so simple to learn the program. Maybe it's not in depth enough for the experts, but its perfect for me. Highly recommend!!!!!
Beginners Guide to a Complex Product.......2003-11-05
If you have ever bought software only to be befuddled by the tombs demonstrate it, this is the series for you.
The book promises that you will read less and learn more. For the visual learner, the full colored screen shots and succinct explanations break 140 Photoshop 7 topics into two-page lessons.
Simple; direct; helpful: What more would you want from an introductory software text?
Waste Of Money!.......2003-10-23
This book didn't teach me anything that I didn't know already. I learnt a lot more by playing around with the software. It doesn't even teach you how to do impressive special effects, like montages or TV lines.
If you have already played around with Photoshop, then you don't need this book! There are better tutorials out there on the internet and they are free!
Save your money!!!
Perfect for the Beginner.......2003-03-01
For the bewildered beginner, this book is ideal. There are NO longwinded chapters filled with theory that you have to digest. On the contrary, the entire book is written 'Betty Crocker' style, with a topic no longer than two pages long. Most of the page consists of pictures demonstrating the steps. The actual steps are listed at the bottom of the page. One can quickly learn how to work effectively without feeling like they're enrolled in an academic course.
John Nemerovski MyMac.com Book Review.......2002-12-06
Book Bytes has admired maranGraphics' approach to visual learning for many years. What works best here are specific screen shots in vibrant colors giving clear, concise, detailed instructions for beginning users of Photoshop 7.
This cross-platform book provides specific directions for OS 9, OS X, and Windows whenever necessary. Bravo! It's a multi-OS world out there, publishers and authors. Two-page lesson spreads make valuable use of the highly successful "Teach Yourself Visually" format. Helpful Q&A style tips enhance each lesson.
Turning to pages 82-83, we learn how to "skew or distort a selection" in Photoshop, complete with numbered, bulleted steps. It would take hundreds of words to instruct without comparable impact of the four-panel illustration. Just one example among many from Wooldridge and maranGraphics.
Any gripes? Yes:
* Often items within a screen being targeted visually are too tiny to see clearly if you're not following along while running Photoshop on your computer.
* I'm being picky, but I get tired of seeing the same JPG examples used over and over again: bagels, palm trees, and light bulbs, for example. I understand they are repeated for continuity, but a little more variety would add spice to the imagery. (I do like that lime-green bagel multiple-effects layer project on pages 192-193, though.)
* Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop 7 is a teaser, making me want to try everything in P7, but then I'll need to dig deeper within a more extensive book. Some beginners will outgrow the book before they finish using its tutorials.
This book is most suited for readers who learn best from a visual presentation, then work on their own to develop more skills. Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop 7 makes just about everything in the software seem approachable.
WOULD I BUY IT? Yes, to help students who fit the above profile.
WOULD I USE IT IF IT WAS THE ONLY PHOTOSHOP BOOK AVAILABLE: Yes, and then set it aside in favor of PhotoShop's built-in Help application for additional instruction.
DO I RECOMMEND IT? Yes, as mentioned above...

Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 2000 Visually is a class act among super-basic introductory books about Word 2000. If you want to learn how to perform critical documentation tasks but lack experience with the new version of Word, this book will teach you job-critical usage of the software.
Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 2000 Visually details all of Word's major features. The author opens with the procedure for starting Word, typing text into a document, and then saving that document to disk. From there, she proceeds to cover text formatting (fonts, alignment, and the like), editing tools (including spelling and grammar checkers), and helpful features like search and replace. Readers learn how to insert tables and pictures into their documents and how to print them. The author also demonstrates the use and creation of simple time-saving macros.
The book utilizes graphics liberally, though they are rarely gratuitous. With a combination of screen shots and custom graphics, the full-color illustrations convey concepts as well as procedures. The author even marks up her screen shots heavily, so it's always clear which parts of Word her comments refer to. --David Wall

Absolutely perfect for the beginner--a must!.......1999-08-18
This book cannot be overpraised. Through the use of step-by-step text and pictures, with expert use of colors, numbers, callouts, and what not, the book makes the learning process easy and pleasant. This is THE book for beginner--look no further! (Also the font size in the pictures is not so small that I have to use a magnifying glass, as I had to do with another publication of the same series). A MUST FOR THE BEGINNING WORD USER!

Customer Reviews:
a little disappointed.......2007-07-08
I have sewn most of my life and was hoping to pass some sewing knowledge to my daughter. Since I don't claim to be any great expert on all aspects of sewing, I thought she would benefit from a good sewing book. This book does cover many things, more so than some books, but I found some of the explanations too short for a beginner and many of the pictures are hard to see due to fabric and thread color choice. I had to reread some of the instructions more than once to understand what was being explained and I already know something about these things. Since my daughter is old enough to use this book on her own, I feel although it may be a decent reference, it is not the perfect book to learn by. I'll keep looking.
Teach Yourself VISUALLY Sewing (Teach Yourself Visually) .......2007-04-11
This is a easy to use guide to sewing. I haven't been sewing long but thought I knew alot, but this book has many pointers.
Finally, a book that makes it all clear for the novice.......2006-12-21
I credit this book with teaching me not only to sew, but in helping me recognize that I am a visual learner. Previous to finding this jewel I had read other sewing books, many highly recommended, and felt only frustration and confusion by the terminology (even in so-called "beginner" books.) For instance, I read the description/meaning of "selvedge" over and over, but it didn't actually click for me until I had this book. Here a simple glance at a photo told me everything I needed to know to identify WHAT the heck it was so I could get on with the actual sewing. No more wasting hours trying to decipher text on how to position fabric for a particular action, once again clear and large photos clarify the matter. I refer to this book constantly and I find it's well-organized, with a complete index.
If you find yourself stumped or frustrated by other "beginner" books, you may find that you comprehend and learn far faster from a tutorial with lots of photographs (step by step demonstrations) than endless paragraphs of text. I know it works for me and I have several wonderful completed projects now to show for it. I even added some "advanced" touches to my beginner projects thanks to this helpful guide. Kudos to Ms. Colgrove and the publisher for recognizing that visual learners need different tools.
