4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2007-09-15

Very good book to get started with VC#
The book was a little to slow in the first 2 parts

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointment.......2007-08-19

This product did not deliver after all the good reviews I read on amazon. The book is clearly translated from the visual basic equivalent, as a result certain exercises have hints that are putting you on the wrong foot and dont make any sense at all. The book left me with alot of questions especially on the syntax of the language, and frustrated me with its lack of providing insight on what I was doing.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to jump into C#.......2007-06-08

I have been programming for a very long time with a lot of VB6 experience. Before that I came from VB3, Delphi 1 and Clipper. I didn't need the programming aspect, I just needed to get acquainted with the C# syntax and the VS2005 IDE.

This book is well organized and easy to follow. It delves deep enough into each main area far enough to show you what to do and where to look for more information. Being a guitar player myself, I also enjoyed the fact that there were guitars, amps and pedals used as .jpg examples!

No complaints here!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-20

I have started learning programming about 6 months ago, reading several books. All the books have been on different programming languages at a beginners level.
This book is definitely geared towards someone that wants to learn programming with Visual C#. I think this book is one of the best I have ever read. I am finding myself wanting to pick this book up and continue learning.

I would totally suggest this book to anyone.
Great Book!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book in Learning Visual C# .......2007-05-09

I have read many computer books in the past. This one has got to be ONE of the BEST learning book. It teaches you how to navigate in the Microsoft Visual C# environment, not to be afraid to experiment and make the best use of the interface. The text are concise. The examples are great for learning. The screenshots are accurate. My book came with the Microsoft Visual C# Express CD (no need to download). Money Well-Spent. Knowledge well-learned. No Pain. Just Gain.

I wish the author Mr. James Foxall would also write a book for the "Microsoft Visual Web Developer".

5 out of 5 stars You should know what you are getting.......2005-01-19

I've read some of the reviews and I'm confused: why would you get a "learn blah blah blah in 24 hours" book and think you were going to learn C#? With '.Net' plainly written in the title, I knew exactly what I was going to get; a tutorial on learning Visual Studios .Net with C#. The book served it's purpose for me, now it's time to learn some in-depth C#. Definitely an excellent book for those who are familiar with OOP and want to learn what Visual Studios .Net has to offer.

1 out of 5 stars Confusing/missleading terminology.......2004-12-21

Too much tutorial for VS.NET, not enough on C#. If you know something about C++, then steer clear from this book. It uses confusing terminology in wrong context. For instance they inaccurately refer to an "object of 'type'" as "Object derived from class". Derivation in OOP has a very different meaning. Also they repeatedly call a class as a "template" for an object. There are more similar confusing wordings and terminologies. I understand they wanted to be illustrative but IMHO they fell over the fence and rather confuse the reader.

1 out of 5 stars Giant Read Me for Visual Studio.......2004-12-16

Oh My God...
This book is a giant read me for visual studio.
It is impossible to read this book when you are anywhere but on your computer because everything you do involves using Visual Studio which the author annoyingly calls "C#" hence the book title.
This book is of no value to people who want to learn ABOUT c# and is a waste of money.

Buy Programming in the Key of C# if you want a good book for beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2004-01-28

This is a very good book if you have no previous C# experience. I decided to read this book after reading Sams Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days and I found that all the programming concepts were review. I did like this book's focus on the Visual Studio .NET IDE and Windows forms, though. It shows you some basics on using list views, tree views, etc. which Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days completely skips. If you're looking for some simple Windows form concepts or if you're looking to learn C# with no programming experience, this is a good book, but people with C# experience and some Windows forms experience can definitely skip it.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to C#........2002-11-06

I came to C# in 24 hours with a background in programming and management of the software development process. The book is easy to read, is well organized with helpful exercises for each hour (chapter). It contains essential information about the language that is missing from the core reference works. I will keep it on my bookshelf for ready reference.

I asked James Foxall a few questions via email and he answered them promptly and with excellent care.

Revision of Sams highest rated C# book-now we're taking it Visual! Part of the best-selling TY in 24 Hours series, this book reaches blue-collar coders on the verge of jumping to .NET programming. Completely updated for MS's "Everett" release, this book is 100% .NET -no messy legacy/beta code to muddle through. The author, James Foxall, has readers writing Visual C# applications within the first 80 pages of the book. Visual C# .NET is available as part of Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET suite of developer tools ($1,079 to $2,499) or as a standalone product ($109 before MS rebates). With the initial release of Visual Studio .NET in 2001, the focus was on the new language C# and not the developer tool Visual C#. Now that Visual Studio is moving out of the "early adopter" stage and into general acceptance by the bulk of the developer audience, the trend is toward Visual C# as a developer tool with less interest in the basis language. Teach Yourself Visual C# .NET in 24 Hours provides readers with 24 structured lessons with step-by-step guidance to real-world programming tasks including Windows and Web applications. James Foxall moves beyond the pure syntax covered in most C# books to guide readers through the basics of Visual C# .NET. Each chapter includes practice exercises, tips, notes, and cautions providing easy-to-understand advice on how to start programming quickly. Sidebars provide more experienced readers with tips that will ease their migration from Visual Basic 6 and Visual C++ to Visual C# .NET. James Foxall, MCSD, is VP of Tigerpaw Software, Inc.-MCSP specializing in commercial database apps. He is responsible for management of all Windows application development, and is an authority on application interface and behavior standards of applications for MS Windows and Office. He contributes to journals/magazines, speaks internationally, and has been featured in news shows, trade publications, and newspaper articles for his expertise. Wendy Haro-Chun, MCSD and MCP, has a Bachelor's in CS and MBA with an emphasis in Int'l Business. As Asst. VP of Internet Development for Sungard Insurance Systems, she is responsible for overall management of Internet product design and development.

4 out of 5 stars Visual C# .NET & Visual Studio.NET.......2006-08-08

James Foxall has written a book that clearly elucidates the mysteries of the Visual Studio.NET environment. Written in five well-organized sections, this book leads the reader through a step-by-step approach to building basic Windows applications. Using a "nuts-and-bolts" type of approach, the author presents the concepts of object-oriented Visual C#.NET programming via a series of brief, but effective projects found in each of the 24 chapters.

Starting with the fundamentals of objects, Foxall shows how to build a user interface using forms and controls. He then adds menus and toolbars to create workable applications. While performing these tasks, the reader begins to grasp the concepts of properties, methods, and events.

From the user interface, the reader learns the basics of C#.NET by writing brief lines of source code and how to manipulate data. Finally, the concept of designing custom objects using classes fulfills the author's objective of teaching the user how to design their own applications.

This text is indicated as a user guide for the beginning. However, I found it to be ideally suited for any one with even a modest programming background. To an aspiring Windows programmer, this text has good introductory value to satiate even the most curious.

5 out of 5 stars My First C# book.......2006-08-04

In pursuing to update my technical knowledge, I decided to purchase this C# .NET 2003 book written by James Foxall. I was impressed at the level of detail and easy to understand content. What I was mostly impressed by is how the Author personally answered some of my questions without hesitation. That's something that I haven't been able to obtain from other book author.

I will definetely pursue purchasing from this author in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Thought it was great.......2006-08-03

As I am new to programming, I thought I would go down the Sams publishing route and find a book that would teach me the basics and foundations for C#. And this is what the book did. I felt the author didn't scare you with technical jargon and slowly introduced you the more high-end stuff. The book is designed at beginner level and was pleased with the purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Material OK, very badly organized for new programmers.......2004-10-26

The book does a decent job of covering visual C# material. But the way it is organized is so bad for new programmers that I can only give it one star. You keep getting "write this code, I will explain later" that most newcomers to programming will give up withing the first three chapters as all they do is point and click and write tons of code they have no ideah how it works. This book was obviously written by a programmer who doesn't teach new students. We have this book at work and none of the 4 people who used it had any success in learning to program in C#.

This is odd for a SAMS book, as they are usually excellent learning books. I would recommend the Teach Yourself C# in 21 days as a better tool for a new programmer to grasp the language.

Even for experienced programmers (and I have been one for 18 years), the book is hard to follow. Phrases like "now add this code ..." whithout saying where (you are stuck looking at pictures in the book and your source code file to finally figure out where the code is suppose to go) doesn't help one bit.

This is a teach yourself book, it should take you from scratch and teach you. All it does in the first few chapters is confuse you and discourage your from learning. I suspect this book was bought my many who ended up leaving it on their bookshelf thinking they cannot learn to program while the problem is not them at all. That is unfortunate!

2 out of 5 stars Good book, but it doesn't teach C#.......2004-05-12

I just finished reading this book cover to cover and I'm afraid I don't know C# much better than I did before I started. I am now an expert in using the (really cool and powerful) Visual Studio.Net Integrated Development Environment, but I hardly learned a thing about programming. So, if you want to be able to create cool applications by dragging and dropping and using menus, this book is great. If you want to have a clue about the code behind your applications and/or learn some lessons in Object-Oriented Programming, you'll need another book. (...)

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars php, php, and php.......2007-10-05

As a reasonably experienced Windows webmaster, this book was a waste of my money. The first 4 chapters (the installs and configs) were why I bought it (I already have a better php book). The small amount of space dedicated to troubleshooting installs is pretty much worthless. The author refers us to the web every time anything goes wrong. Thanks! 8^)

It IS a reasonable primer for those brand new to coding techniques, but do not assume that you will learn how to install and configure the web server and database, nor anything about their interoperability through this book. My title is more accurate...

4 out of 5 stars Trouble at first then smooth sailing.......2007-09-06

Like some others who left reviews, I'm a complete beginner to coding, php, mysql, and apache. Given that, I found the installation utterly confusing and spent three days unable to get past chapter 4 where the real content is. A tip for others like me, skip the manual installation. The author cautions about using pre-configured instances of the software, but I found WAMP5 to be a life saver. It's pre-configured and comes in an MSI file. However, as much as I hate to admit it, the struggles I faced in trying to follow the instructions did teach me a lot about the basic configuration, even if that wasn't the author's intent. Since then, I've found the content to be good and am gaining a fundamental understanding of the tools. I know this won't be the end-all php, apache, mysql bible, but it's a good place to start.

2 out of 5 stars An advanced book & not for beginners.......2007-08-25

I am stuck on chapters three and four and can not continue with this book. I could not get Apache to work with PHP. In the "Troubleshooting" section of the book on page 58 the solution to getting Apache to work is this: To solve this problem, you need to stop the running server or change the Apache configuration to listen on a different port. Well, if you know how to do this, buy the book. If you don't, you are forever suck and can't continue with the rest of the book. I tried to change the ports and address as suggested in the book, but it didn't work. Be sure to read "Who Should Read This Book" in the introduction section of the book. I probably don't have the required experience to work the material in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Decent if you're patient.......2007-08-21

This is good for those who have incredible amounts of patience and like solving problems. The setup alone took at least three hours and a lot of searching on Google. Many important steps are left out (such as how to add and use a database from the MySQL command line, how to configure PHP to support mysqli, and how to configure Apache properly to support PHP.) The PHP functions used in this book are the mysqli_* family and require special setup in the php.ini file. There are no instructions however to set this up. Without this you can't write any SQL programs.

There are also numerous typos in the code. It's obvious that none of the code in this book is actually tested to see if it works. There are simple things such as variable name inconsistencies and function typos that throw off the whole script. When you're new to a progamming language these aren't easy to spot.

Overall, however, there is still plenty you can take from this book. If you have the patience the problem solving will probably cement the concepts more solidly in your brain because you will be figuring them out for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Not helpful.......2007-06-10

One of the worst "beginner" books I've read for computer programming. The book frequently directs the reader to external web pages for critical tasks... and I'm thinking, "Gee. I bought the book to walk me through this". The code is poorly explained. The examples frequently didn't work. Steps are omitted.

If you want to split your time between a book and online searches for manuals... this book is for you. If you want to get your $35 worth of a book and expect to have it be enough (not the end all, be all, but enough) of a beginning... go elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Could be better..........2005-07-03

This book, even as the second edition, suffers from poor proof reading. The text and examples in some cases do not match causing confusion for the student. With persistance and perhaps the guidance of a teacher, that confusion can be overcome. The errata available on the SAMS website covers only 2 mistakes and none of the dozens of mistakes I spotted.

You will have to learn your IDE for Windows on your own as the page that covers that is brief. Only MS and Borland environments are covered. If you use Unix or Linux, this book is not for you.

The lack of a CD is a plus. Typing your own programs and learning the mistakes YOU make in creating programs is the way to learn. Some will say that this is a disadvantage. I see it as an opportunity to gain experience.

The first few chapters discuss basics and indeed will get the student started. But when the going get rough, the explanations get hasty and sparse. Like many courses, they start with good intentions but the end of the term presses and the pace increases just when the material gets more difficult. The last half of the book should have been the last two-thirds. Check out a different C book, there have to be better ones.

2 out of 5 stars Too tough.......2005-03-13

I hardly got anything out of this book. Understanding pointers was difficult, and the brief explanations weren't helpful. I can't imagine how someone else would learn C.

I have read an earlier edition of this book. I have to say it is the best intro to C I have ever read. None of the campy "For Dummies"-ish stuff. Just clear, concise, easy to read and understand descriptions.

Tony Zhang is an amazing writer when it comes to making programming concepts accessible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-08-25

I absolutely did not know ANYTHING about programming. First chapter was a very simplified version of what will become a more complex outcome further on. The rest is filling in on details of math and vocabulary. By the fourth chapter it was very clear to me what is needed. In conclusion of the book you will be programming. Ive bought this book twice because by chapter six someone stole it. After reading this book i have understood most programming languages alot easier.

4 out of 5 stars great book, but no downloads for computer codes.......2002-08-02

this is a good book to get one started with C language. The explanations are clear and concise.

The downside is that there is no download for computer codes used for examples, so one has to type in all the listings.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Programmers, Bad for Newbies.......2007-08-24

The only language I've programmed in the past is C# and I still consider myself a beginner in that language.

Recently I got a job where I had to learn C++ very quickly. Now I have to say this book provided a great C++ cram session to get me up to speed. I had read Liberty's Learning C# 2005: Get Started with C# 2.0 and .NET Programming (2nd Edition) and liked his style, and was not disappointed with this book content-wise (except some of his examples seem a little too involved for the concepts they're meant to illustrate but not too bad).

The glaring thing I noticed, and the reason for the 3-star review, is that this book does not cater to the beginner to programming whatsoever - even though the book promotes itself that way. I can say without hesitation if you are just learning your first language then you will be utterly lost reading this book. I'm not so far from being a newbie myself to see the author takes for granted the reader's familiarity with basic programming concepts.

However, like I wrote above, if you are transitioning from another OOP language like C# or Java, then you will find this book to be a great primer to get you up to speed. I found the "By the Way" info capsules to provide useful insights into the language.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for beginners!.......2007-04-16

This book is great for somebody who is just starting out with C++, as I am. I tried a few online tutorials and it wasn't quite sinking in, so I bought this book. I am only on hour 5, and I am really enjoying it. I am already to the point where I can write basic programs from memory. The authors do a great job explaining everything in an easy-to-understand way. The book comes with a cd including a program called C++BuilderX, and every example they use in the book is on that disk. So, you can either type out the program yourself or simply open the file off the disk to view the code.
I love this book and I can't wait to learn more! :)

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......2006-03-03

THe book is ok, but the companion Borland C++ builder software ruins everything. You have to request an installation key online. I've been waiting over a week, trying and trying to contact Borland, with no reply whatsoever. Book should be called "Teach Yourself to Hound Borland For 24 Days". I only hope it will only take 24 days at this point.

3 out of 5 stars It is a crash course.......2005-04-02

Listen, the book is not the golden fleece of literature but it is not completely repulsive either. To me there are a few issues with the examples given.

One, as the previous reviewer said sometime in the book it mentions something but does not provide an example for it. I see reasoning in that because the book clearly states beginner, so it does not cover all concepts. You cannot use this book as a full reference nor are you supposed too. This book is more like a pocket dictionary.

Two, 1 of the examples were hard to follow. The example in the linked list chapter was very hard, I think in the next edition they should write a simpler code so the point can be conveyed to the reader easily.

Overall, this is an ok book to start with if you are in a hurry to learn C++. The book will get you to a decent enough level to program simple programs. It is like a crash course, I repeat a crash course. That is the best way to describe this book. You will still need to further your education after it however so you can be taught about things such as how to use singletons, the standard template library and so on.

Mickey Williams's Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 24 Hours is a worthy addition to the Sams 24-hour series. In two dozen short and digestible sections, the author gives a "greatest hits" tour of some of the most important features in Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), along with what's new in Visual C++ 6. Along the way, this title also manages to review the basics of the C++ programming language.

Early lessons concentrate on building simple MFC programs using basic dialog box controls like buttons, edit controls, list boxes, and combo boxes. Using real code examples, the author moves to the basics of MFC document/view architecture (always a difficult topic to present clearly), menus, and Graphical Device Interface (GDI) graphics programming.

Williams then discusses several common controls (first introduced in Windows 95) for building more sophisticated user interfaces. The advanced section of this tutorial provides an introduction to viewing Dynamic HTML with MFC Web controls. All in all, this group of tutorials is concise and extremely useful for anyone new to MFC control programming.

The book closes with some material on using dialog boxes as application windows (using form views) and the basics of targeting ActiveX controls within Visual C++ 6. It doesn't tell you everything there is to know (no mention of database classes or C++ templates), but if you want a quick introduction that covers some significant technical turf, you'll like this efficiently presented title. -- Richard Dragan

2 out of 5 stars Errors, Missing Information, and Limited Explanations.......2006-08-19

Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 Days was a disappointment. In general the book will give you the basic steps to create the example applications in each chapter. Trying to create an application that is not in the book will very quickly send you looking for other resources. I found more information on the web than I did in this book.

The author does a lot of do this, do that instruction with little explanation of the exact reasons for the task. There are numerous errors which requires some creative interpretaion in order to figure out. Overall the book could have been better written to the level of developer it is intended for, and definately could have done with a coursory edit.

A good example of what is missing in the book is Chapter 5, Button Contols. The author explains the different buttons and button properties and has you generate a sample application. What is missing in the chapter is how to actually retrieve check box and radio box values to use in other parts of your application. Even the Visual Studio help files are vague on this topic, which may explain the problem with the book.

In short I can not recommend this book. It contains too many errors, there is a lot of missing information, and explanations are almost non-existant. A better title would be "An Introduction to Visual C++ 6 in 24 Hours".

1 out of 5 stars messy, unbalance, no real sense, no system view.......2004-11-20

1. those give 3+ didn't really go through the book and try the examples. I used to think it is very good, then go details and found it little use.
2. it let you go around controls, not go up. each hour you know a new control, similar design steps, too simple and uncomplete examples, may be stupidly designed. e.g., to edit treeview you need right click plus left click; after you quite the edition is lost. don't tell you how to use the edit.
3. when it guide you to do sth, not step by step, but jump to top then back, sometime you don't know which relates to what, and you need to dig one key word from messy text lines to know your adding one belongs to which class/object (sometimes author just forget to list it clearly).
4. tend to use long text rather than graph and tables. gives pages on font and their naming, font creation, yet no graph to show the font type. often mentioned "windows 95" with no meaning. put if..else etc. in later and no related chpaters, if it is really needed it shall be in 1st hour.
5. repeatedly mention on similar things rather than give clear, real usage of controls. Never tell you resize window, give too simple drawing functions. Tend to list most controls rather than use their key features. Author seems doesn't know which parts in VC++ are most important and useful for applications.
6. It gives you some info on VC++ controls, and do right in Hungarian namings. I suggest you just try the button/menu item/dialog box examples, than go other books.

1 out of 5 stars For Beginners - Yea Right..........2004-02-15

Chapters 4 and up would be a good review for those very familiar with MFC and Visual C++ programming. For the beginners - good luck and think about the great dinner you could have had w/the money you just wasted...

4 out of 5 stars LIVES UP TO ITS WORD: AN INTRO TO VC++ FOR NOVICES.......2003-12-17

More of a guide to use the IDE than code VC++.
Less, if not zero, talk about OOP.
Good for wetting your feet in.
Concentrates more on GUIs and less on components, services, etc. No database examples.
All the example code I tried worked just fine.

OVERALL, LIVES UP TO ITS WORD: AN INTRO TO VC++ FOR NOVICES. So, 4.5 on 5 rating.

4 out of 5 stars great book for learning to use MFC.......2003-07-28

Don't expect to learn to write general c++ code from this book. It focuses specifically on the MFC class and does a great job of that. Most programming courses don't teach anything about MFC, but in many cases, you are expected to know it for work or upper level programming courses. I have certainly picked up the basics from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Yeah, right!.......2006-03-17

I find this to be a low level of professionalism from this author: "First, I don't mind negative reviews; this is my 4th book".
To post a positive review to off set the candid reviews from others, I find that to be very amateurish.
I have written the author in the past as she suggests only getting some nasty response back from her.
If you want a great book on MySQL go with the MySQL Tutorial By Laura Thomson, Luke Welling.
The book is written very well and has a 4.5 star rating with no pump from the authors.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!.......2005-04-07

This book includes a wealth of information for the beginner using mySQL. I sped through the chapters, have the database from the examples installed and I'm using for a contact management system. It's great. Now to branch out and create my own database for my book collection. Thanks Julie for a book that readies the beginner for using mySQL.

1 out of 5 stars Regret to purchase this book.......2004-09-14

I got this book long time ago and never had a chance to read it. I recently got some time and want to learn how to use it, and I still have no idea how mysql work after reading for a few chapters. I end up reading the manual of mysql and found some other helpful tutorials online. If you are a beginner, this book does not provide any help.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed...........2004-07-14

I had to learn SQL quickly, given ~ 1 weeks time.
The book makes many references to using MySQL (cause its free), yet 1/2 of the examples and exercises do not work on MySQL, due to syntax issues between MySQL and the other, "favored" DB's used in the examples.
Also, it makes the assumption that you've installed MySQL and have it up-and-running, and yet I lost ~10hours fighting with logon credebtials once my MySQL was loaded on my Lunux box...what a hassle!
I guess if you use Oracle or SQL 2000...you'd have an easier time of it.....

5 out of 5 stars Great book to start with.......2003-07-20

In the beginning of the book, Chaper 1-7, the author starts with teaching C++ in a CONSOLE APPLICATION. This is really great, because when I want to learn to program, I don't want to place all kinds of objects on a form and customize those. Instead, I just want to see all plain text in one view. This section of the book I find very brilliantly written: exactly my level of depth I want to read in a starters book, without too-exhaustive examples.

From chapter 8 on, the 'Builder' environment is described. I like best reading this part before sleeping or when travelling: Because I find the Builder environment so intuitive, it is in my opinion not needed to explain all 'obvious' stuff. But I guess for people not familiar with a Windows environment, this will be a great help. But for me, I only read it for those 'magical' lines of code (like how to read a line from a Memo component, which I found very hard to find out alone).

Chapter 20 is filled handy 'programming tips', like the use of 'ALT-[' or 'ALT-]' to find corresponding curly brackets.

Chapter 23 is about the debugger, which was also a need-to-read section for me.

Concluding, I find the book superficial in its most positive sense: it describes what a beginning programmer needs to know to start with, without going into not-needed details or falling into exhaustive examples. It gives you all you need to know to start with.

3 out of 5 stars Addition to the July 9, 2000 review.......2000-11-11

This book is a good introduction to using Borland Builder 4, and it comes with a 60-day trial version of the program. But it contains some flaws. Some of the step-by-step instructions are incorrect or missing. And the sections on Visual Components and Window controls go into great detail about what these components and controls do, but does not give any instructions/examples about how to use them in a program.

I actually found that the Borland C++ Builder 3 for DUMMIES by Jason Vokes to be much better in showing how to use Visual Components and Window Controls in programs.

Neither the Borland Builder in 24 Hours nor the Borland C++ Builder 3 for DUMMIES is perfect, but together these two books provide a good introduction to using Borland Builder.

You can use the Borland Builder 4 in 24 Hours as a guide to building simple, single document or multiple document interface Window programs.

And then you can use the Borland C++ Builder 3 for DUMMIES for more instructions/examples or how to use various Visual Components and Window controls in your programs.

The book shows how to use the following components: label, editbox, panel, memo, combobox, buttons, maskedit, shape, grid, imagelist, listview and treeview, dialog boxes, and etc.

The DUMMIES book also has chapters on debugging, C++ exceptions and database programming (you would need the Professional version of Borland Builder to do database programming; this version has the database components needed to create programs that can access databases).

3 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to Borland Builder, but with some flaws.......2000-07-09

3 out of 5 stars Too much C++ and not enough builder.......2000-05-03

I bought this book to get an introduction to Windows development using Borland Builder 4.

Now, I must say that if a person knows little C/C++ then this book is good bacause it leans towards teaching basics of this first.

However, for someone that is not new to C/C++ there are a lot of pages to jump over. Then there is not enough builder. You get the basics, enough to get started but...

In conclusion a good book if beginning to program in C/C++ but not really for the advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave MS VC++ without it!.......2000-04-20

Excellent intro to C++Builder. Thorough, patient, well-paced, informative. Required if you are a newbie to Builder. I used it to learn the new Builder 5.0 and found no problems. (A small part of this book is an intro to C++. It is too small -- but that's okay. There are plenty of good books out there on C++. I like Herb Schildt's work.)

5 out of 5 stars Best I've Found So Far.......2004-06-10

You can't teach yourself everything about C++ from just one book. You will need a few. But this one is the best I've found so far. Very well written, clear examples. This book is !!HEADS AND SHOULDERS ABOVE!! other C++ books geared for newbies, err Dummies.

This book doesn't go into much depth with compiling code, I imagine b/c it depends somewhat on your compiler. Also prior programming experience is helpful obviously.

But this book is VERY GOOD, the best I've found.

2 out of 5 stars Not All Bad, But Miles From Good.......2004-03-27

On the bright side, most of what is said in this book does make sense to the amateur computer programmer. I can't offer the view point of someone who is an absolute programming novice, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say this book is definately not for that person. This book expects you to have a least a basic understanding of some fundamental principles of programming, and by extension a few pieces of programming lingo as well, but not very much.

The book doesn't suffer from the "unknown jargon" syndrome so much as it does from the "very-scantly-explained-small-topic" sydrome. By that I mean, there are subject matter scattered throughout the book that isn't necessarily important to know at the moment, but they are so vaguely explained that they distract and confuse the reader, leaving one to ask "what does he mean?" and totally missing point in the meanwhile.

The most frustrating aspect of the book is the code. I've re-written most of the code in the book, and only one hasn't compiled (and even that was sort of an obvious typo). However, that's a long way from saying the quality of the examples given are high.

The most striking thing about the code is that it lacks a lot of in-code comments. Comments would have made the examples more meaningful as the reader was doing them. In an attempt to make up for this, a "line-by-line" analysis of the code is offered after each sample listing, but that only spawns more problems. First, the analysis sometimes says it is refering to line numbers which, clearly, it is not. Sometimes the lines numbers it refers to are blank! Secondly, the analysis skips lines or gives very vague explanations as to what is going on, often leaving the reader wondering what went on in those line he or she didn't understand!

Lastly, the book offers rather weak reviews and summarizations of the chapters. It asks questions that are not very important to your understanding of C++, and it doesn't offer any material for self-examination of topics. For instance, an assignment at the end of every chapter could have put the knowledge gained to the test.

If you'd ask me if you can learn C++ from this book alone, I'd say 'sure' but it will confuse you every now and then with little explanation. Also, there is nothing that seperates it from 500 other C++ books that makes this one worth buying over the rest of the herd.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Bigenners!.......2003-06-03

Don't know where to start? well, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!!!
This book will help you STEP-BY-STEP to learn C++ from the ground up. This book is amazing, I even carry it with me to my friend's house, it's not a boring book, it's addictive!
The book includes guided examples, and after each example begins a line-by-line explaination for the code.
You yount be dissapointed by this book, get it now!

1 out of 5 stars Examples, step by steps but no explanation.......2001-08-13

The book doesn't explain why you are doing. Just type and test it. It can be great for someone who doesn't have programmed nothing in his life and gets surprised with the magic words... or for someone who really knows what he is doing (reference) but it is not a good book for someone who wants to know WHAT EVERY CHARACTER YOU TYPE IS DOING AND THE MOST IMPORTAT: WHY. In lesson 3 you have a "CClientDC dc(this);" and I find no explanation. Why? What is "CClientDC"? What is "dc"? Why "this"?

5 out of 5 stars C++ almost seems too easy.......2001-06-07

The text is clear and the lessons follow a smooth and logical sequence, with no mix-ups. If you're getting started in C++, I strongly recommend this book.
