Explaining the fundamentals of personal computing to those who would rather read words than look at pictures, PCs for Dummies tells you everything you need to know in order to use an IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98. Dan Gookin's prose is technically astute and fun to read.

This isn't the book for you if you're looking through a computer catalog and wondering what all the jargon means (Buying a Computer for Dummies covers that). Rather, this book will help you when you've gotten the machine into your home and you need to know what to do next. Starting with the process of unpacking the box and plugging in all the cables, this book shows you what to do with your new machine.

After assembly is out of the way, Gookin shows you how to get around in Windows 98 (and Windows 95, which is almost identical). He explains concepts like files, directories, and applications, and frequently explains the exact procedures involved in common tasks like adjusting screen resolution. Once you've heard all about the basics, Gookin goes on to explain modem configuration, printer problems, productivity software, and a fair amount about Internet use. --David Wall

4 out of 5 stars I LIKED THIS BOOK.......2007-03-11

VERY HELPFUL FOR THE NOVICE COMPUTER NUT. IT'S READABLE FROM PAGE 1 TO THE END, BUT ALSO, EASY TO LOOK UP STUFF USING CHAPTER HEADINGS OR THE INDEX. LIKE ALL 'DUMMIES' BOOKS, HUMOR IS THERE FOR THE ASKING. I RECOMMEND IT.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding books for beginners!!!!.......2001-08-28

I was a "dummy" when it came to pc basics. I wanted to know Ram, rom, whats on the motherboard, etc. I wanted to know my Dell 4100 inside and out. Thanks to Mr. Gookin's excellent book, I am on my way to becoming very good friends with the very computer that once intimidated the heck out of me. He talks in, depth (but doesnt go so far as to confuse the beginner with a lot of geek jargon), and with humor, all you need to know about your computer so you can feel confident about using it. Youre not going to be a techinician when youre done with this book, but after reading it, you will be able to go to the local computer store with confidence and talk their language and not get the runaround. If every computer were to come with an instruction book, this one should be it!! Hats off to Dan Gookin and IDG books for such an excellent book. I look forward to reading Upgrading and Fixing Pc's For Dummies next!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2001-06-25

This is a very handy book to have. It is best for people who have very little experience with computers.

5 out of 5 stars Who's the Dummy.......2001-04-09

I have been working with computers for a number of years and I am still mystified by all the computer hardware, software, jargon, acronyms, properties, claims, capabilities etc. Most of what I have learned has been through experimentation, reading Dilbert, and pleading for advice. Dan Gookin's book PCs for Dummies has been a great help in demystifying the world of PCs. After breaking down and purchasing this book, I realized just who the "dummy" was.

The format of Gookin's book is unique. It is well written, humorous, and very informative. Best of all, PCs for Dummies actually makes reading about computers "nerdless." The book is broken down into 34 chapters and covers everything from turning the computer on (power-up) to the Internet. Each chapter covers a specific piece of hardware, software, and/or computer function. Individual chapters are further subdivided into sections. For example, Chapter Eight is titled, "Just Your Basic Computer Guts." Subsections include, The Mother of All Boards, The Microprocessor, Connectors for Things Various and Sundry, Expansion Slots, Tick Tock Goes the Clock, and The Bios. I would love to tell you how it ends, but I am forbidden to do so by Amazon.com guidelines.

The best attributes of PCs for Dummies are that the book can not only be used as a reference source, but can also be used in place of a phone book to interrogate surly computer gurus. You don't have to read the entire book before using your newfound knowledge. Just turn to that particular section for which you need help, read, and press "Enter."

PCs for Dummies teachs how to use computers based on the learning philosophy of "Constructivism." Whoa! Basically, Constructivism is a philosophy in which learners acquire knowledge through active participation in their own learning; and by connecting the new knowledge to knowledge that they already possess. In other words, once you have learned basic computer tasks, you can "construct" or build upon that knowledge to learn more advanced computer operations. I subscribe to this learning philosophy and employ it into my teaching with excellent results.

All good things must pass and so must this review, but not before some constructive criticism. I would have liked Mr. Gookin in PCs for Dummies go into a little more detail about specific topics, as many topics are just touched upon. Well maybe not many, just the ones in which I needed help. Overall, Mr. Gookin has written an excellent book and I highly recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Bestseller of Bestsellers.......2000-05-12

There are plenty of weighty tomes available to tell you more than you want or need to know about PC. But this book of Dan Gookin is very special. It is just great for novice.

Truly say I'm not a novice in PC. I've been writing about computers for over 10 years now. But I really enjoyed this book. And I read every 'PC for Dummies' editions since it was translated into Russian for the very first time in 1995. And this 1999 edition also was recently translated into Russian and take a good position in a list of bestsellers.

By the way, I wrote a review on this edition for the Home Computer Magazine published in Moscow. And I want to repeate -- this is a great book for beginners.

Loaded with solid advice in the fun style typical of this series, Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies is an excellent introduction to what makes your computer go. If you're sure you can put your new modem or video card in by yourself (and you can), this book will provide you with the help you need.

Rathbone starts with an introduction to all the mysterious connections on the back of your computer's case, teaching you how to distinguish a game port from a serial port and an audio jack from a network connection. He then moves inside the case, using drawings and diagrams to illustrate processors, peripheral cards, memory modules, and other internal components. Troubleshooting occupies much of this book, and the author explains the basic "identify and isolate" strategy very well. He also points out what to look and listen for, describing, for example, the meaning of the beeps you hear when you turn your computer on.

Some of Rathbone's organizational decisions seem weird. He covers the procedure for replacing an internal modem in a chapter about all kinds of internal expansion cards, rather than in the modem chapter. But the information is there and it is well presented, so Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies makes an excellent resource for hardware novices. --David Wall

I just cannot find my copy of this book. With this book, I've been brave enough to pop open my computer and install things like a TV-tuner card, more powerful memory cards, cd-burners. People think I'm a computer whiz.

Without this book, my new hard drive sits on the shelf for six months. I open my cpu and say, "Looks like I need one of them ribbon thingees. What's that called?" I'm on Amazon today to buy another copy because I just cannot function otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful introduction- brilliant overview! 6th edition.......2003-03-03

Kind of a combination introduction/overview to the state of PC technology today, with an emphasis on helping readers new to the subject in maximizing any PCs performance. This is an excellent book! Covers all the latest in Windows XP configuration and upkeep, as well as buzzwords like DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CDRW/DVD, 802.11b, 802.11a, wireless access points, fast Ethernet, FireWire, USB 2.0, MP3s, WMAs, LCDs, DVI-I, DV camcorders, digital cameras, scanners, printers, modems, NTFS, ATX, AGP 3.0 8x, DDR SDRAM,... etc. EVERYTHING current to today's PCs is given a brief mention. I especially like the Appendix, "The Rathbone Reference of Fine Ports", which clearly explains the most common of today's PC connections, as well as the ones that are going out of style. Very helpful! This book strikes a great balance between being too simple and being too advanced. It's the perfect companion to the "Windows for Dummies" series, right along with another recent book, "Troubleshooting Your PC for Dummies", by Dan Gookin. Highly recommended!

Having to use a laptop more and more, on road, want and need to really know it, up to 'advanced/basics' at minimum. "Dummies' book coverage has width of scope looking for to fill my current gaps.

5 out of 5 stars He Knows what He is Talking About.......2007-01-04

Buying a laptop should be easy. I want a system that is very powerful, weighs almost nothing, has a huge screen but small overall size, and runs forever on its internal battery. Unfortunately such a system is hard to find. Therefore you have to make compromises.

And in reading this book I find that I pretty much agree with the analysis Mr. Gookin makes. And I base that on having had about a dozen of them down through the years.

First, decide what you're going to use it for. I use it for programming, especially web programming so I need a web server, a database and some other web software.

That fits into his second comment, decide what software you're going to use. OK, that's a given. Windows (not Apple or Linux).

Screen size - smaller is better for me because the overall system can then be smaller. I'm just looking at code most of the time and don't need graphics.

Service & Support - as he says, go with a big name company, look carefully at the extended warranty. The extra money was worth it when laptops were $2,000+, I'm not so sure now that they've gotten so cheap.

Battery life used to be important and I carried three batteries around. Now with most aircraft having power available it's not nearly so important - and besides batteries are heavy. I've found power outlets in airports, coffee shops, libraries, on trains and other obscure places. I now only carry only one battery.

Physical security, get one of the tie down devices that connect your laptop to the desk. This is especially a problem at college.

I find I'm talking my own ideas. I didn't mean to start preaching. After all these points and more are included in the book. This fellow knows what he is talking about.

4 out of 5 stars Laptop Helper.......2006-11-14

These days, many people all have a computer in their home. Nevertheless, which one, a desktop or a laptop or notebook specifically. While buying a desktop is more convient in the price tag, it can be bulky, and leave little space, laptops bring in a bit more convience for all to have in space. Although they are much more expensive to purchase, it can be very, very easy for those to operate a laptop in the convience of their own home or in the office. Thankfully, the dummies people know how to help you guide your way into operating a laptop without the hastle of doing it on your own, in a simple how-to guide.

Laptops For Dummies is a very simple instruction book that teaches you how to simply operate youn laptop whenever you need to. The book gives detailed advice on what simple tidbits you'd need to do, to reboot the computer. For example, you could hold the power button down for 5 seconds and you could easily shut down the computer, without destroying the hard drive. Or, you couls also learn how to improve the sound on your computer, by simply buying a sound card and hook it into the computer for better audio playback. Considering, most laptops have distorted sound, you'll find out how easy it happens to be to improve the quality of your computer. The book give great details on Windows XP computers, and gives you a glimpse on what to do if yo choose to upgrade to Windows next operating system, Vista. The book is very detailed in its description, and easy to afford.

If you own a laptop computer, than this is the most important tool you could use for your computer, especially for those who have Windows XP. I found this book was very helpful to me, and I definitely recommend this for anybody who considers a laptop for their own home. Laptops For Dummies is no dummy at all!

4 out of 5 stars useful explanations.......2005-08-08

Possibly the most important things Gookin explains are how to keep an eye on your power consumption when using batteries, and how to hook up to the Internet. These are both usually in the real world context of you travelling to some place. That's why you're getting a laptop, right?

The battery situation can be frustrating. He warns not to lose work. Depending on your choice of laptop, power consumption might be an issue. The faster the laptop, the more power it uses. There is a complicated reason to do with CMOS technology used in most of the laptop's microprocessors, where the power consumption is proportional to the clock frequency. But the main thing is to be aware that speed comes at a price.

As far as hooking up to the Internet, Gookin shows that things are reasonably easy nowadays, and getting easier. The latter is because more wireless access points emerge in cities, and more hotels, libraries etc have wired access. Remember to change the default passwords on any networking software you run, before having it go out on a strange network.

It is a great program but you have to be willing to spend some time with it. At first I found it somewhat frustrating. But after I wile I got the editing commands down. I still use a keyboard but sometimes I feel like dictating and it fits the bill. So overall I would say be aware that you need to put in a little work to make it work.

2 out of 5 stars It's old!.......2005-05-13

This book was written to help the average user with techniques, hints, etc, for learning to use the Dragon.

However, it was written, in 1999, for Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 4!

The current version is Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.0, which is quite advanced.

There have been so many improvements in Dragon Naturally Speaking, since the book was written, that much of the information has become quite dated, and much-needed newer information is, of course, not included.

I bought this book unknowingly, when I was using version 7.0, and it did not address my needs.

Until they update this book, or write a new one, I would suggest buying a different book. Spend your $20 on something that will be useful!

By buying components and assembling them yourself, you can save a little money and gain a lifetime of free technical support. Building a PC for Dummies removes the intimidation factor from building your own Intel-based personal computer, explains what you need, and shows you how to put everything together. It's a fine place to start if you've never assembled your own machine before and want to give the process a try.

Author Mark L. Chambers describes what to look for when shopping for components, but he refrains from recommending any specific models or manufacturers. Building a PC for Dummies would be stronger if he had made such recommendations, the way Tom's Hardware Guide does. Even without a specific shopping list, this book makes it possible for a novice computer builder to make informed decisions about motherboards, processors, storage devices, expansion cards, and input devices.

Chambers presents the assembly process logically, explaining how to install a component or two at a time while performing incremental testing. He includes troubleshooting information in each component's section, but it's odd that he puts his discussion of operating systems in an appendix--most system builders will want to see their creations run as soon as possible. --David Wall

Topics covered: Buying and building a PC; selecting motherboards, processors, storage devices, expansion cards, and input devices.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Books.......2007-09-25

I am new to the computer world and have found the books for dummies to be extremly helpful and very entertaining. I would recomend these books to anyone with computer questions or just for an amusing read. Carol from Ohio.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for a beginner.......2006-06-03

I am the typical "dummy" when it comes to computer hardware. But, I managed to build my first PC with the guidance from this book. You will not become a professional but will gain sufficient knowledge for you to learn the mechanics of assembling your own computer. The book also includes a glossary that serves as a useful reference tool.

**Sufficient information explained in an easy-to-understand manner**

2 out of 5 stars Superficial, dated.......2006-02-20

I found this on the "new books" shelf at the local library and took it home for a look-see.

I must say, I was disappointed. This book will not help anybody build a computer. The information is superficial and dated. There is a shortage of illustrations (NEED LOTS MORE PHOTOS!)

Now, I have indeed built my own computer, but that project would have been a disaster if this book had been my guide. Instead, I heartily recommend "Building the Perfect PC" by Thompson. (Interestingly, the blurb on the front cover of this Dummies book says "Build the perfect PC..." Coincidence? I think not). Less than a year ago, the Thompsons' book WAS my sole source, my cookbook for how to put together a computer, and it covered all the gotchas encountered in the process. It has abundant photos, and they're in color. With the rapid pace of computer development, even that is showing its age, and the authors aren't updating their web site as promised, but it's still leaps and bounds ahead of this "For Dummies" book.

4 out of 5 stars Computer building for the hardware technophobe..........2005-11-04

(This is a review of the 5th edition)

I'll admit it... I buy my PCs when I upgrade. I'm getting more at ease with hardware since I've started doing all these book reviews, and I probably *could* build a PC now without too much angst, but I still buy. But if I were to decide that my next PC would be "home-built", I'd be comfortable with using the book Building a PC for Dummies by Mark L. Chambers.

This book is most likely going to appeal to the hardware-phobic computer owner (like I was for quite awhile) or the first-time PC builder. Chambers has an amusing writing style which will make you smile as you figure out the next steps to take in your PC adventure. If you've already built a PC or you dwell in the land of needing to know every last technical spec of a device before you install it, there's probably not much here to offer you. Even I know most of the material *about* each device and what type of rationale you should apply (buying new vs. refurbished, why hard drive capacity is important, RAM is king, etc.). My downfall would be actually having all those devices spread out on a table with an empty computer case in front of me. But I'm pretty confident that I'd be able to stand a pretty good chance of getting everything to actually work the first time if I followed the information here. There's even a center section with color pictures to show you what to expect. It's a nice touch...

If you're looking for an approachable book on getting past your first computer build, this one would be a good choice. Easy to follow, fun to read, and the intimidation factor is nonexistent.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, do the job yourself!.......2004-06-19

Even though it's a little harder to save money on a bare bones PC, this book will help you build a game player's dream PC for much less than those models you find in the back of PC Gamer. This book covered everything I needed with recommendations on what to buy. Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Windows 98 and ME Good, But A Bit Dated Now for XP.......2007-09-14

This is was published in 2002, and has basic information on Windows 98, ME, and XP. It seems to cover the important things about XP. Overall, the book is good but at least five or six step by step recipes no longer work (I guess) as a result of changes to XP. I gave it 5 stars, but the book alone does not work nor is it current. You must seek additional help on the web or from Microsoft using their automated support to be 100% correct ("Microsoft Help and Support"). So, I recommend the book highly as a loaner from the library, not as a purchase, and use it with Microsoft resources and other web information.

As a reference point, I have a strong technical background in science and engineering and have used all versions of Windows going back for 14 years to Windows 3.1. Overall, I was surprised by the amount of detailed information in the book.

Before using the book, I recommend that you first download all Windows software updates on your computer, both for Windows XP, and all the drivers such as the printer software, and then see if that fixes all your problems. That is free and puts everything on the same basis. I had trouble printing with Adobe 8 on an older computer that I just inherited until the updates were installed. It was running on Windows XP, and the downloads fixed most problems. I did over 100 Microsoft XP downloads (all automated and free) plus Windows Service Pack 2 for XP. I still had some issues so I checked out this book from the library.

As with most readers, as one might guess, I did not start at page 1 nor was I overly impressed by the book at first glance. I had a few specific problems and wanted quick guidance. I looked on the Web as well for help and I looked at the book. I started with one problem which was hard to correct. I went to the book and found it in the index. It was a desktop problem, and in fact there are a few tricks using the "desktop" and the problem was not simply my imagination. The solution by Gookin was simple and it worked. After that, I realized that the book looks superficial but it contains a lot of information that most people are too busy to research on the web or read, or have missed. If you want a quick review on many small points, this is a good reference to keep handy. I did not buy the book; I borrowed it from the library for a few days and read it cover-to-cover, and made some notes on anything that was hard to remember, such as going into specific Window files to change obscure settings.

Some think the book is simple and "for computer dummies" and contains simple topics such as de-frag or file cleaning. That is not exactly what the book says. The book recommends that on certain versions of Windows the process fails and third party software should be purchased such as Norton to manage and clean the computer. I had already figured that out myself, but he had a number of other points as well. The main strength of the book (at the present date in 2007) is to use it as guide or road map of the key points to learn. But, one must review and update the details using Microsoft Help on the web as one learns.

Recommend: 5 stars but as a loaner from the library, or buy used.

5 out of 5 stars To the point.......2007-04-14

Troubleshooting your PC for dummies, was very easy to read and the information will be very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars My grandson liked it........2006-11-06

My grandson, age 14, is the real computer nerd in the family. I gave this to him as a gift. It must be good because he said it really helped.

4 out of 5 stars I hate raining on the parades.......2005-07-16

This is a very good book for troubleshooting, and if you think you could use this, you probably could. Do you know how to defrag a hard drive? If not, this is for you (it's easy, really).

I got this book because I live in Korea, and my new computer came with Windows XP in Korean; I'd never used XP before, so figuring it out in addition to the Korean was too much for me. I wanted to try this before shelling out for an English OS, and this appears to be good enough. I've been able to figure out almost everything, without even knowing the language that my OS is in. So if you feel like your computer is speaking in a foreign language, well, this book is for you!

Seriously, though, I've decided to pick up PCs for dummies as well, just because there are still a few things I can't figure out, and a lot of the information is interesting to me, and after all, I can't read anything on my OS. If I were you, I'd check out that book before deciding to buy this one. Fortunately you can browse them pretty thoroughly here on Amazon before laying down your money.

Even though I've been in Information Technology for over two decades, I generally don't do well at PC or Windows troubleshooting. I design business software, and I basically want my hardware and operating system to just work. While I've gotten better at troubleshooting, I'm still interested in any help I can find. Gookin does an excellent job in targeting the specific areas that are most likely to go haywire on your home or work PC, and he then gives you some of the more common approaches to resolving those problems. In addition, he also helps you to take ongoing steps to make sure your PC stays functional and clutter-free for as long as possible. Following the information in this book, there's a relatively good chance you'll be able to extricate yourself from a number of blunders or problems before you start teaching your children new words that shouldn't be repeated in public.

Long-term hardware techies or software/OS geeks will probably know most if not all of this information already. But this is the type of book I could conceivably give my dad in order to help him fix some of his own computer problems when I'm not around. Or he can have it on the shelf so *I* can use it when I show up to fix whatever he did. Either way, this book is a perfect first line of defense and reference when you're desperately trying to resurrect your great American novel from the dead...

5 out of 5 stars EASY TO READ.......2005-09-12

This book is very informative ad even enjoyable to read. It has been a big help and explains things so anyone can understand.

5 out of 5 stars Basic But Beautiful.......2004-11-28

This book is about the very basics of computers, but it completely covers all parts of a computer, inside AND out.

4 out of 5 stars basic information, will help you get started with PCs.......2004-08-09

This book is aimed at complete beginners, which is not a bad thing; too few computer books really are. It covers the basics of how to use a computer (with an emphisis on the XP OS). Covers basic hardware and software, what part of the computer does what, the difference between an OS and application software (many people don't have a clue) and other basics. It won't make you a computer geek, but it will certainly, for many people, increase thier computer literacy significantly.

Particularly valuable for most people will be the explination of the basic hardware and software, as opposed to the basic instructions for using XP. I work in an office supply store that sells PC components, and I'm always amazed when people don't know the difference between RAM and their processor. The basic, painless, introduction to the hardware would alone be worth the price of the book. He details most of the major PC components well enough that you understand what role they perform in running your PC. He's also good about explaining basic software categories (i.e., an OS as opposed to an application program).
The instructions for using XP (Managing files, etc.) are basic enough that they could probably have been left out, as most people figure it out pretty easily and intuitively.
Overall, the writing is done tolerably well, and in an easy manner that doesn't intimidate or condescend, which is nice. The information is sound, and basic, enough to provide a good foundation of knowledge so that you are not totally in the dark about your PC.

Bottom line? If you don't understand what a processor is, or the difference between XP and Office, buy this book. It will help. If you can't tell the difference between RAM and your hard drive, buy this book. It'll make the computer age easier on you .

4 out of 5 stars Demystifies as it informs..........2004-02-07

Here is the 9th edition of PCs for Dummies, dedicated to Windows XP. Dan Gookinfs book is the anti-geek guide to what you need to know about computers. All aspects of PC technology, hardware and software have been completely updated. Youfll learn about the common mistakes beginnerfs make along with a bunch of helpful tips. No geek gobbledygook or clutter. PCs for Dummies demystifies as it informs.

This edition contains mostly new information. Tutorials on burning CD-Rs and creating musical CDs, information on broadband technology, wireless networking at home, having fun with digital photography; advice about how to protect yourself from internet plagues such as spyware, pop-up windows and viruses. Dan Gookinfs inimitable style makes understanding computers easy for the not so techie.

A nice touch is the wide margins; make use of them for sticky notes or jottings. Before reading this book from start to finish, first read the three chapters in part V: The Parts of Ten, and thereafter dip into this book often. A must read before you go computer shopping. Of course you may ignore this advice at your own peril and miss the chance of saving the cost of this book and avoiding regrets by buying the wrong parts. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Author Dan Gookin will not let you down..........2003-11-24

His style makes any tech topic easy and fun to learn. This new edition covers broadband, digital photography, beating back spam, Tablet PCs, and all kinds of other great things. To keep up with new things your computer can or should do, or as a safety net for anything that might pop up, this book is the handiest reference you'll find anywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-09-14

This is a great book. It really explains any possible question you can have about using your blackberry pearl. It's also very easy to understand.
If you want to get the most out of your blackberry pearl I really recommend you get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Answered the Questions I had........2007-03-07

I bought this book, not because I have a BlackBerry Pearl but because I was thinking of getting one and wanted to see just what they realy can do. I first went and talked to the people at the store - useless. Then I went to the web, and did a lot better, but I still wanted more detail. Sometimes those people speak in jargon, they use words to describe things that just don't mean the same things I understand them to mean. I thought that buying this inexpensive book would answer my questions better than trying to get information out of the barely trained sales person at the store. It worked perfectly. Instead of just saying that the thing will do something, it says that if you want to do something, here's how.

In essence this book answered every question I had, and then some. For instance I would never have thought to ask about accessories or software. Of course it's written in the usual irreverent 'For Dummies' style that I happen to like. It makes reading about dull computer stuff less boring.

I picked up this book to help my decision between getting a Palm or a Pocket PC and was blown away by the capability of this new class of shirt-pocket computing power. I've checked out all the features of the Casio pocket PC following this book, and it's totally comprehensive. This is the book that should have come with the computer. It covers every aspect of the built-in Microsoft Office suite, as well as the MP3 player functions, e-books, handwriting recognition (awesome!), GPS compatibility, remote web browsing, and on and on. This book sold me on Pocket PC's over a PDA, and for that I consider it worth the price. But it's also an easy to read reference manual for using all the capability that these little gems have to offer.
