5 out of 5 stars Everyday Usage.......2007-01-09

I'm a Oracle DBA and this is a great reference book. I use it so much that it does not get back to the bookshelf. A book to learn how oracle works it is not but a complete quick coverage of everything that an oracle 9i database can do. The only thing I have found better might be Oracle's own docs. But when you are setting in front of a console with no internet access oracle's docs won't help. Or just thumb tab a few pages that you use for speedy look up. It is a reference not an instruction manual and a lot cheaper then printing out Oracle's docs.

5 out of 5 stars My opinion.......2006-03-10

This book was written for anyone to read. I have read many Reference books and none of them are as easy to read as this.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but not complete.......2005-08-03

I used this to supplement my study while working on OCP certification exams (Oracle 9i database). The book has good information but not everything you want to know about Oracle. Frankly, the books helps but it is not complete reference. It would not be a bad idea at all to own a copy of it.
I give 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Not very thorough.......2004-02-25

If you are looking for a brief overview of everything, this book is for you. An developer/administrator looking for detail on any one topic will not find much use for this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book to Start Learning Oracle.......2003-10-22

This is the book to start learning Oracle. This book assume that you know nothing and from there it builds your Oracle Skills. Oracle is very vast but this book has nicely covered all the basic aspects of Oracle that you will need in your day to activity. No doubt that this book will not make you an Oracle Expert but definitely you will learn to move forward. This is the starting point.... This book will make your base for Oracle.

2 out of 5 stars You won't pass the 1Z0-007 exam with just this book........2007-04-21

I just passed 1Z0-007 a few hours ago making 90% (47 of 52) first try. Trust me, If I ONLY studied this book, I would have failed. This book has so many mistakes that it will make you go crazy. It's completely outdated. It doesn't have the current exam objectives. The wording and content placement of this book is terrible. I should have bought the oracle 9i OCP: sql studyguide by Oracle Press.

Get the Self Test Software. It will save you a retake.

I'm studying Oracle's 10g PL/SQL book and Self Test for the next test.

I can't wait to be an OCA!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for studying.......2007-03-29

I bought this book and i am still preparing for the certification. So can't really say how useful it will be for the exam. But while reading it, i think it has a great style and really pertinent information.
I am confident this book will help me successfully complete the exam.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very helpful.......2006-07-22

I just passed the 1z0-007 exam yesterday. I dont have a lot of experience with oracle, but this book helped me learn all the important concepts for the exam and helped me pass it in my first attempt.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to pass the exam. However, the usefulness of this book ends there. It is not very useful and the explanations are not detailed enough for learning more about the technology itself.

4 out of 5 stars Good book - but independent test software needed to pass exam.......2006-07-21

Good book, very thorough, equally useful for study-reading and reference.
My one complaint was the end-of-chapter tests and practice tests, which were much more detailed and more difficult then the exam itself. I wasted time trying to perfect my knowledge until I purchased an 'Exam-Prep' software kit and found I was getting 90%+ on tests, instead of the 40 and 50%+ with the Sybex tests.
When I took the exam - sure enough 90%+
For the next exam I'm buying the Sybex book and 'Exam-Prep' software kit together!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Exam Guide.......2006-11-10

I used this book to study for the exam. The explanations on this book is very good. The only fault on this book is the level of the questions. The questions on this book are very weak compared with the real exam. So, keep in mind that to think to take the exam, you will need to have a score upper than 90% on the test of the book, to have a chance to pass on the real exam. I bought the SelfTest too and there is the same problem with the questions. But, the key is: you need to understand the concepts behind the questions. If you understand that, you will not have problems to pass on the exam.

I had take the test last week and a I pass on the exam with 82% score. To study I use this book and the Self Test Software.

4 out of 5 stars Good Exam Guide.......2004-10-05

I used this book to study for the Performance Tuning Exam. This book covers all the objectives of the exam in much more organized way. The chapters reflect the contents of the checklist designed by oracle. Study the chapters carefully before taking the practice exams. Concerning the practices exam itself, it has some mistakes. Some of the answers to the questions are wrong but if you understand the material you will notice those mistakes. Or if you want to clear any doubt you can also check the oracle online manual.
On the exam, expect a lot of questions concerning the views, latch contentions, and some initializations parameters.
My suggestion to you is if you want to maximize your chance you can buy the sybex study guide which is also good. Both books are good for the exam except that I found the Oracle press book more organized. I will definitely recommend them if you are planning to take the performance tuning exam.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book - Could have done better.......2002-09-21

Read this book - took the Beta exam failed by 6 wrong answers. Second attempt passed - thanks now an OCP Certified. The explanations are good. Need more explanation, the new feature and their effectiveness on the 9i with respect to performance tuning. This would have helped use this book for standard reference for performance tuning 9i. I don't like to keep lot of books around. Now I have to get rid of this and get a book for 9i tuning reference purposes.

4 out of 5 stars A good preparation tool.......2002-09-16

My purpose was to pass the exam and I have done it using this book but also the Sybex book by J. Johnson.
Both of them are very good books and are complementary.

Pros:
- very well structured and very clear
- the exam-based questions are representative
- the level of detail for package procedures is good

Cons:
- some answers to exam questions I had can't be found in the book
- there are typing mistakes in capital letters commands

My advice:
- have a good understanding of Oracle views. I had between 10 and 15 questions relating to views.
- use both books to be well prepared. This exam is quite difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Oracle Press better than Sybex for Performance Tuning.......2002-09-14

I bought the Sybex book. One of my colleagues bought this Oracle Press book. I read both and passed the test with plenty to spare. For the Oracle9i Performance Tuning Exam, I strongly recommend Oracle Press over Sybex. If you are buying just one, get the Oracle Press book. In particular, the Oracle Press sample tests and CD-ROM tests are much closer to the actual exam than Sybex.

4 out of 5 stars good book but the new edition is even better.......2006-11-15

Its a very good book. covers all the finincial modules very well. Gives the whole flow of data in them. but the newer edition is even better it covers extra modules as well. wil help u in getting a wider view. So i would recomend u to go for the newer edition if u need a wider idea of diff modules

4 out of 5 stars Recommended if you are new to PL/SQL.......2005-08-03

The book is good and is recommended for someone new to PL/SQL. For someone who is already familiar to PL/SQL, you can save money by going through the Oracle Online Manual to read about the new features of PL/SQL in Oracle 9i. Since I already had a previous version (Oracle 8) of this book, I consider buying this book as waste of money. But if you are just getting into the world of oracle and you want to learn PL/SQL, this book is for you. One nice thing about the book is it comes with a CD that has some trial version of some development environments. Nice to explore those.
I give 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A very helpful book to pass the exam........2004-04-10

This is, indeed, a great book to pass this exam(1Z0-147). Actually, there is no prescribed book(as of now!!), for this exam. This book fairly covers most of the topics that are specified in the official exam syllabus. However, topics on Large objects are not covered in this book extensively. I suggest to search on google for LOBS(This is how i got some notes on LOBS). This book is good to study functions, procedures, packages, triggers, and some DBMS packages, but it doesn't cover LOBS, managing dependencies. Overall, I can give 4 stars to this book, as it helped me to pass the exam.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better IT books that I have seen.......2004-02-20

This is a well written, fast reading book that provides the reader with the information needed but not with the fluff that we do not need. I used this book to pass the Oracle Certification Exan 1Z0-147 : Oracle9i: Program with PL/SQL. If you own this book and 'Oracle PL/SQL' by Steven Feuerstein and Bill Pribyl (published by O'reily), you probably have what you need (for understanding PL/SQL) ... enjoy

2 out of 5 stars Only for newbies.......2003-12-31

I must say it is not what I expected. Basically, if you know nothing about PL/SQL, that is, the Oracle extension of the SQL, and you need to grasp its general concept in a very short time, this is the book for you.

But the subtittle of the book is definitely misleading. When it comes to advanced topics, the book simply copies from the online documentation from Oracle, but only the brief summery. Say, function DECODE, one of the most powful feature in PL/SQL, is covered in half a page! Just the official definition. Nothing to read about. If you bought Oracle 9i The Complete Reference, you'd find a whole chapter devoted to that function.

The author didn't do much work with this book. If you're a serious programmer, don't bother with this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all Oracle DBAs.......2004-06-25

In my opinion this book is for junior to senior dba's. It covers basic, advanced and even expert DBA topics. The books pays for itself over and over agin.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the time and $.......2004-06-11

I got more than my time and $ worth. It was a good guide to for getting started with Statspack. However, it looks like they rushed this one to market. The book needs another thorough edit. Not all the scripts in the book are in the download. Most of the scripts have at least one problem. Some paragraphs right next to each other seem to contradict each other. However, if you're experienced with oracle and just need to add statspack to your bag of tricks, it's worth it.

2 out of 5 stars don't be deceived.......2004-03-06

the bad:
1. no mention of Windows anywhere. only covers UNIX, no mention of this in the blurbs
2. Oracle 8i (and even 8.05!) take up more pages than 9i. It's rarely clear where 9i info starts. An obvious copy+paste job from previous editions. And this despite the title of the book.
3. the author spews scripts everywhere. there should be a table of contents for the scripts. it's practically impossible to figure out what scripts there are and what they do. Possibly really lazy or inexperienced DBAs would be interested in all these scripts but most dbas will probably live without them.
4. author promises to provide "extensions" to statspack tables for trend analysis and he makes it sound like he will present a clever way to store snapshot data between reboots the way Capacity Planner does, but it turns out all that all he demonstrates is how to create tables for data collected by UNIX operating system utilities. It is a very misleading description.

the good:

1. decent explanations of basic tuning concepts. But again this is copy+pasted straight from a tuning book. I bought this book for info about statspack not tuning 101!
2. decent diagrams of statspack tables but nothing that can't be found on metalink.

I returned this book. It's shovel-ware, plain and simple. The author worked very hard to bloat the size up to 600+ pages to rationalize a $40+ price tag for the publisher. How can he take himself seriously? Or i wonder if the author actually believes this is a well-organized book to be proud of...in which case his mind must be like a tangle of knotted strings.

5 out of 5 stars great book for intermediate/advanced DBA.......2004-02-26

One of the very very good books I ever read in Oracle. Well thought/written in a manner that is easy to absorb.
Could see new ideas, new ways of thinking/implementing. Could recommend to intermediate/advanced DBA as a tuning/statspack bible.

4 out of 5 stars Robust book with a good ideas.......2004-01-13

Statspack is a Godsend tool from Oracle.

This and the previous edition of the book provide DBAs with an excellent introduction into understanding statspack internal tables and great ideas on how to integrate critically important OS statistics into the statspack data gathering process.

Using statspack daily, I found this book and Performance Explorer-i / Statspack program (found it on internet - made by dbainfopower) to be invaluable tools that extend statspack capabilities and help to resolve complex performance problems.

1 out of 5 stars worst oracle book.......2007-02-05

Dont buy this book. This book is full of errors. couchman contradicts himself at various places, whatever he explains could be totaly diffrent to the explainaton he gives undet test review section. If you are buying this book make sure you have another book as a reference. i am really very much surprized how come oracle has given his tag to this book. i doubt if anyone can pass oracle exam using this book.

2 out of 5 stars Did not help me pass the certification test.......2006-05-31

I have been writing Oracle SQL for 5 years improving the efficiency of the web application our company maintains and decided to become officialy certified. I bought this book, learned some new terminology and Oracle skills. I aced the practice tests that came with the book. However, the official Oracle exam is much more difficult than the book's practice tests. I ended up buying some of Oracle's official practice tests. Of course, they may be scams as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good exam reference.......2004-03-17

This is the only book I used to prepare for the OCP 1Z0-007 exam. The Oracle published exam objectives were covered and the sample test questions on CD were good. Other than one or two SQL syntax surprises, I had no problems with the exam. This book may not be adequate if you are unfamiliar with databases, SQL, and programming as there is not alot of instructional material here. Good luck.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough to pass exam.......2004-02-28

This book is an update from the release 8i. Looks like the author did not take the time to properly update material, the functions chapter have missing lots of the new functions in 9i, same goes for MERGE and INSERT INTO (SELECT FROM ...) statements.
I was surprised some of the new 9i stuff was not even mentioned in the book.

Some of the examples are well explained, but there are some errors, you better test them and not take them as granted.

You can use this book with Sybex Introduction to Oracle 9i, both will be enough to pass exam.

2 out of 5 stars How to make big $$$$ with Oracle Official Authorization.......2004-02-11

Jason Couchman must be laughing his head off on his own private island. Slap together a book full of mistakes (scripts that don't work, INCORRECT information, inane opinions,) and get it reviewed by his kindergarten kids. Get a buddy at Oracle to whack "Officially Authorized Oracle Press" on it.... then watch the dollars flow in.

He didn't even both updating reference to ora81 directories.

Shame on you Jason. I thought Nigerian e-mail scams were bad, but this book is just a cruel rip-off of people wanting to get somewhere in life.

Shame on you Oracle for giving it your blessing.

I may pass the exam but books such as this will not help me become a competent Oracle DBA.

4 out of 5 stars It's actually not that bad, you just need some SQL & relat. DB info prior to.......2005-10-25

I read the reviews posted above, and was discouraged, but I needed an Oracle reference right away and this was the only book available at the library. Just as one person said, the first 2 chapters aren't wholly necessary and promote Oracle a lot. On the other hand, the book is printed by the Oracle Press. Chap. 3 provides details on Oracle's implementation of a DB, and Chap. 4 is where it *really* begins.

It is a lot at once for a true novice. I'm not so bad -- I had a pretty good crash course on relational DB ideas and SQL in 2 lectures of a web programming class once, for use with mySQL. This book is good enough to explain the Oracle side of things. And the writing isn't all that bad, i.e. it's more than just a copy of the manuals, IMO. It suits me well enough as an intro to the Oracle syntax and way of doing things.

2 out of 5 stars Overly vague...not quite intended for the absolute beginner.......2004-11-07

Being new to oracle databases this book basically highlighted the new features of oracle 9i while attempting to provide a beginners overview of the Oracle database.

The book also does not provide a download of the databases used in the code examples. As a true beginner, i would have liked to follow the code examples in the book, and try out SQL commands. This would have provided me a better understanding of what the author was explaining, as well as 'try out' the code examples.

However, if you are seekeing OCP certification and have a fundamental understanding of SQL and databases this book may assist you with converting to the Oracle structure. I've read the whole book without any Oracle or database experience, and was able to gain a better grasp of the architecture during OCP training courses.

As with all manuals i read there's always useful information contained within them, so i would not completely dismiss this book.

1 out of 5 stars VERY limited audience.......2004-09-12

Technical computer books are pricey enough that I normally browse a book pretty carefully before deciding to buy it. 'Oracle 9i: A Beginner's Guide', on the other hand, was an impulsive purchase that I regretted immediately. Time spent trying to get some use out of it has only hardened my opinion.

As an experienced Sybase DBA trying then to set up Oracle at home on Linux, I wanted three things primarily: Clear and complete installation and configuration instructions to supplement Oracle's disorganized and hit-or-miss instructions; Clear explanations of Oracle's architecture and unique features; and a good introduction to Oracle PL/SQL.

This book scored only one out of three. The two chapters on PL/SQL I found pretty useful. However, the material on architecture and features is confusing, largely because the writing is not well structured into main topics and subtopics. It also fails to provide good illustrations or to relate the architecture to concerns of installation and configuration. For instance, we are told about the function of redo logs, rollback segments, and undo tablespaces in vague and general terms, whereas a DBA needs to know precisely what they do. Rollback segments and undo tablespaces appear to serve basically the same purpose, according to my reading of the book. Should both be used, else what are the criteria for choosing one over the other? The text never gets there.

The installation instructions deserve a paragraph of their own. The index does not even list "installation", which probably is appropriate since the material covering installation was removed from this edition of the book, albeit incompletely. The 1 1/2 pages (!) beginning on page 84 bear the heading "So, You're the New Oracle 9i Database", perhaps the silliest of the book's many typographical errors. Then the first paragraph tantalizes "We are going to do a high-level, step-by-step walkthrough of putting up your first Oracle 9i database. Get yourself a cup of coffee and a comfortable chair; for those of you in business class, raise the footrestbeforehand...here we go:"...and then...the flight suddenly is over while the coffee is still warm. A note in italics advises the reader that "In earlier releases of the Beginner's Guide, we walked you through the Oracle server installation. With Oracle8i and now Oracle 9i, it's just too big a topic to cover in a book this size."

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I suggest that they should have just made the book bigger, and cut out all the gimpy, insulting attampts at humor, and the long-winded first chapter in praise of Oracle, Inc. Not every book from Oracle Press is this bad. I have browsed 'Oracle 9i DBA Handbook' by Kevin Loney and Marlene Theriault, and it is far better written, concise, organized, and informative (As always, take a look and make sure it covers the material you need). See also O'Reilly's 'Oracle 9i Essentials', or better yet the new edition for 10g.

1 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner.......2004-08-31

I am truly a beginner in Oracle; I have experience as a computer programmer and with SQL Server 2000, but never really have played around with Oracle. So I was looking for a beginner's guide to get me started. Sadly, I picked this one because I thought since it's from Oracle, it would have the best resources at hand.

Almost immediately, I was disappointed: Chapter 1 is a tribute to how amazing Oracle is and how godlike Larry Ellison is and it's filled with pages and pages of revenues and sales. What a waste of paper. Then Chapter 2 tells me how to use newsgroups and Google: more wasted paper. I come to Chapter 3 and I think I finally get into learning something. Then I notice they concentrate on Sun Solaris as the operating system which isn't very helpful to a person trying to learn this on his own at home. What follows is a list of files and processes: very dry and certainly over the head of a beginner trying to start using Oracle. Then on page 84 I read, "In earlier releases of the Beginner's Guide, we walked you through the Oracle server installation. With Oracle 8i and now 9i, it's too big a topic to cover in a book this size." That's how they start out their step-by-step walkthrough of setting up your first Oracle database. Oh, the last step reads, "12. Read the rest of this book." To me, the book wasted 80 pages then tells me installation would take too long. Very disappointing.

At this point, the small jokes the authors throw in are just insulting as the book slips into unreadability.

Perhaps this book is good for someone sitting at an already-configured database terminal at their work running on Solaris. And I would also think you'd have to have some experience running some previous version of Oracle. This book is certainly NOT for beginners. I hope I didn't waste my money so that after I read a REAL beginner's guide, I can come back to this one and learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Nice coverage of database concepts and internals........2004-04-24

Wow, there is a lot of unfair bashing on this book.

This book covered exactly what its cover title said...

"...A Beginner's Guide. Learn the essentials of Oracle..."

Learn the essentials of Oracle was described very well. You get the feel of how the internals of Oracle go. If you are in a job interview and the interviewer asks some basics like the SGA, cursor or what is net8? You'll be laughed at for not having this simple yet broad database knowledge. Very few books describes the Oracle internals and general memory structure of all databases. It sure beats reading the white papers and manuals on the Oracle website. Anyway, this was the section that I thought was highly significant and it distingueshed itself from other books. I think some of the bad reviews below were not expecting what the book's title asys. "Learn the essentials of Oracle." If you want to buy a book on how-to write SQL and learn nothing else, then there are some SQL books targeted solely for only SQL writing.

4 out of 5 stars In this set 3 books out of 4 are good.......2006-04-17

It is worth buying this set to use for the Oracle 9i track OCP exams.

*OCA/OCP: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL Study Guide (1Z0-007)
Good book, it covers pretty much all the exam objectives. It is easy to read and easy to follow. But I prefer the sybex study for the exam (1Z0-001) which is an alternative to the exam (1Z0-007). Overall I give 5 stars for this book within the whole set.

* OCA/OCP: Oracle9i DBA Fundamentals I Study Guide (1Z0-031)
Very good! The content of the book is well-aligned with the exam objectives. It is easy to read and easy to follow. Can even be used as reference. I also give 5 stars for this book within the whole set.

* OCP: Oracle9i DBA Fundamentals II Study Guide (1Z0-032)
The only bad apple in the basket. This book does not account for all the exam objectvies outlined by the Oracle Certification Program. The book does covers some of the topics tested on the exam but not in depth to make you feel comfortable. I admit I gained some knowledge out of this. Overall it is not a complete guide. I rate 3 stars within the whole set.

* OCP: Oracle9i Performance Tuning Study Guide (1Z0-033)
Best book! Complete coverage of the exam objectives. The coverage is good and clear with many screenshots of codes. The only problem with this book is it does not follow the format of exam objectives. But you can still find your way out. Overall, I recommend it. I give 5 stars within the whole set.

Finally, my suggestion is this: to maximize your chance and master the topic, try to get also the Oracle Press books. If you couple the Oracle Press books and the Sybex Study guide, you don't need the expensive practice test software. You will have plenty of questions you will increase your chance of passing the first time.

4 out of 5 stars oracle9i review 01.......2005-10-05

The book is found very useful. The structure and scope is easily agreeable to the exam syllabus.

2 out of 5 stars Not good as a boxed set - checkout 007219524X instead.......2004-05-27

While the first two volumes covered the testing material fairly well, the last two volumes (Fundamentals II & Performance Tuning) compare very poorly to their counterparts published by Oracle Press. I have bought other Sybex study guides, and they have been nothing but good to me. This "kit" comes up a little short. If you must absolutely buy a boxed set for the cost savings, I would recommend Oracle Press's set ISBN 007219524X also available at Amazon.

In the book for Fundamentals II, the coverage of networking, Shared Server and imp/exp is VERY sparse. While the sections on Backups is better, the Oracle Press books were a little more on target in presenting concepts for the exam.

The Oracle Press book for Performance Tuning was a much better choice not only for the exam, but also works as a great reference at my desk. Again, the material and its presentation was more complete and representative of the concepts tested on the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Best OCP.......2003-11-26

This is definitely the best oracle 9i book in the market.
However, you must use it with the Simulate Exam question.
Otherwise, I think is impossble to pass.

I think ocpfree/ocpfree1/ocpfree2/ocpfreeX in yahoogroup.com has provide a valuable Exam Simulation all for free.
No need to buy the simulate test. This book + yahoogroups + Study will gurantee you pass.

5 out of 5 stars Really good study guide.......2003-07-04

Hi,

The content and the style is really comprehensive and easy to understand. The best part is the closeness to the actual exam.

There are so many books to learn about Oracle but by using this book and exam sim from whizlabs, I could easily cracked the exam.

I'll highly recommed it.

Best wishes,
Sunil

4 out of 5 stars Topic well-covered.......2004-10-05

Thanks to the author. I used this book for my last exam along with the oracle press book. The topic on the exam is completly covered but not according to checklist designed by oracle. But you can still find your way out. I have to admit that the book is really good I like it. It has sufficient details that help a lot. The practice exams questions are also really good. But there is one small mistake that I noticed is the answer to one question related to the alert log file in Unix environment (sometimes the answer is alert_sid.ora and sometimes it is alert_sid.log).
Finally to candidates for the exam, expect to see a lot of questions on the views (performance & data dictionary), latch contentions, initialization parameters, IOT, and Index...

4 out of 5 stars A good preparation tool.......2002-09-16

My purpose was to pass the exam and I have done it using this book but also the Osborne book by Ch. Pack.
Both of them are very good books and are complementary.

Pros:
- A lot of examples: extracts from statspack reports, screenshots of Oracle Enterprise Manager tools. It's very interesting to understand but it's no use for the exam.
- The exam-based questions are challenging.
- Nearly all you need to know can be found in this book

Cons:
- This book doesn't follow Oracle test content checklist. It's all mixed up but there is a good plan table.
- Some chapter are too much detailed, too many parameters for Oracle utilities (eg TKPROF). It's sometime difficult to see what's important to know for the exam. I only had basic questions about those tools nothing about all the options described in the book.
- They are small mistakes: CREATE_STORED_OUTLINES, USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES and USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES are stated as initialization parameters but it's not the case (check otn.oracle.com).

My advice:
- have a good understanding of Oracle views. I had between 10 and 15 questions relating to views.
- use both books to be well prepared. This exam is quite difficult.

3 out of 5 stars Sybex not as good as Oracle Press book.......2002-09-14

I bought the Sybex Performance Tuning book. A colleague of mine bought the Oracle Press book. I read both and passed the OCP exam with plenty to spare. While the Sybex book is good, the Oracle Press book is better.

5 out of 5 stars Will help you pass, but it won't be easy...........2007-01-14

Don't kid yourself. The 1Z0-031 is not an easy test, but reading this book helped me pass the test. If you are new to the profession, like me, then this book alone will not be enough.

I read this book once, understood MOST of what I read and then tried the test and failed. I then took an Oracle DBA class at a Community College and read two other books titled "Oracle 8i DBA Bible" and "Oracle 9i DBA Handbook". I also read Biju Thomas' book one more time, fully understood it and then I was able to pass the test.

I highly recommend this book. I feel that if you can read and understand 99-100% of what Biju Thomas writes in "OCA/OCP: Oracle 9i DBA Fundamentals I" then you can pass the Oracle Exam. I also would not attempt the Exam without reading this book at least once.

4 out of 5 stars Good for certification and great for on the job Reference!.......2005-10-09

My objective in going to the exam was to learn the basics of database and passing the exam was secondary ( i have a fairly well settled job where certification does not matter much).Anyway, No review on certification books is complete without giving a background of your experiences on the subject :

MY DBA EXPERIENCE :
My experiences on Oracle DBA fundamentals is practically and theoretically zero. I have already passed the Introduction to Oracle9i SQL exam which is a pre-requisite to get certified. You can be a master in SQL skills and still be a novice in DBA Fundamentals. Frankly I DID NOT know the following :

1. Physical structure of database is composed of controlfiles, datafiles and log files
2. Never knew that most developers and DBA's spend the time on logical structures which are tables, tablespace etc and do not physically exist in the database
3. Had never heard of V$views
4. I was aware of tables, tablespaces ,DDL commands etc
5. I am an application developer and bulk of my interaction with oracle was select statements, update statements etc
6. Was aware of different types of indexes and that is an important topic in both SQL fundamentals exam and DBA fundamentals exam

If you can answer to all of the above criteria's with a confident 'yes', you are most likely a DBA already and just want to get urself a pay raise by getting certified..Yes, this book will help to breeze thro ( i read about someone who got the exam passed by studying the book for 40 hours). For newbies like me, it is not that easy..in fact it is doubly difficult over intro to sql exams because, i lacked the practical experience ( try inactivaing a tablespace from your company database).

STUDY EFFORT : This book goes through every topic in detail, but sorely misses the visual explanation that would have made some topics easy ( example ...shutting down an instance and startup). This is the reason why i am not giving 5 stars to the book. Neverthless every topic was well described. some of the topics are little elaborate eating into our valuable study time. I studied the book totally 4 times , since after every reading ,tried doing the question paper and slowly removed the errors in understanding. It took a whopping 6 months for me ( and my friend) to learn as you earn. With little more effort, probably i could have got certified in 4 months

I used the book tests and Best of all, my friend who also passed the exams sent me a question paper ( that be purchased in ebay) based on Jason Couchman's book Took that exam( about 150 questions)..and everytime went back to the book reading the chapters and sections where i got it wrong . As a matter of fact, the question paper from jason was very very closely aligned with the questions i got in the exam.

EXAM : Passed the exam .scored 49 correct ( required 44). there was not one question on syntaxes . i assume the oracle examiners have decided it is too easy to find syntaxes on the internet and were focusing on understanding of the subject ( ex : steps taken to multiplex a control file)
If passing the exam is primary for u..don't miss the simulation exams of Jason Couchman ( of course u need to study )..but if u want to learn every aspect of DBA Fundamentals, use this book. On the job, this book is a great resource ( according to a junior DBA in our team). Well written book!

4 out of 5 stars Very good test preperation.......2004-09-06

To pass those Oracle Exams is hard for a newbie anyways because the hand on experience is missing. I am one of these candidates but I have to say that this book is very helpful to get ready for the test. 95% of the topics needed for the exam are completely in this book and explained in a good understandable way. For the other 5% I have used the original Oracle training documents. After you have passed the exam this book is an awesome reference because topics are divided in a very usefully way and all topics have examples of the SQL commands and dictionary views.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2004-08-18

I used this book and ILT Oracle's manual for my preparation.
Most of the objectives are covered in the book, I like the way in which information is being presented, the only problem I found is some chapters miss important information such as names of dictionary views, which are clever to exam.

NLS is barely covered and not all views are shown.
The tables chapter enforced too much about types of segments, I spent too much time looking into creating partioned tables which is not part of exam objectives.

The Undo chapter misses information on how to check for PENDING DELETE rollback segments.

Follow Exam Objectives when using this book, so you won't waste time memorizing stuff you don't need.
Good Luck

4 out of 5 stars Very useful. Passed first time........2004-08-05

I purchased this book and downloaded Oracle 9i from the Oracle web site. I spent less than 40 hours reading the book, doing the practice questions and playing around with Oracle and I passed the exam with a 47/60. It's not the greatest of passing margins but considering I haven't had any prior experience or training with Oracle (I have had one year of experience with MS SQL Server 2000) and it took less than 40 hours of my time to prepare for it, I would say the book did its job well.
