2 out of 5 stars Good test prep, but otherwise sparse content.......2007-09-20

Reading these books, I find them to be good resources for preparing for the exams, but I know that they will not become the trusted dog-eared references that I would have hoped them to be. Useful content is sparse; a lot of text seems to be wrapped up in the presentation of the material and it leaves it a little verbose. Furthermore, the books are badly edited and I find myself distracted by the flagrant mistakes that one can find every couple of pages. The mistakes do not seem to be so bad, however, that one cannot easily discover the error and compensate; they are also seldom technical in origin, though the (more often) grammatical mistakes or the (occasional) omitted negation *could* lead one to misconstrue the meaning of a particular passage.

I have been exceptionally upset on the occasion when I discovered an obvious case of text pasted from another section of the book that had not been properly modified for the new context, and so, badly referred to the old context. This is just careless.

Aside from this, the material is otherwise very clear and very simply put.

5 out of 5 stars Great books for step by step learning........2007-07-29

I found these books very helpful. Most of the topics are very well explained and are related to the exam.

Book Description

A detailed look into best practice design, deployment, and maintenance of an ISA Server 2004 Environment. Written by industry expert Michael Noel, of Convergent Computing, ISA Server 2004 Unleashed provides guidance for ISA deployment scenarios, including step by step guides for configuring ISA to secure Exchange Outlook Web Access, deploying ISA Server 2004 Enterprise edition arrays, setting up Site to Site VPNs, deploying ISA as a reverse proxy in the DMZ of a firewall, and much more. This book covers ISA in great detail, with emphasis on real-world situations and labor-saving scripts that help administrators take control of an ISA environment and leverage its full potential to provide unprecedented levels of security to an environment.

4 out of 5 stars Well Leashed and Very Useful Installation Guide.......2006-05-29

The book is poorly named. "Unleashed" suggests to me wild and wonderful things to do with complex features or even tricks and undocumented things. This is definitely a black Labrador on-the-leash kind of book, and it will get an administrator safely across the broad avenue that is an ISA installation. It's a great book in spite of the name.

I used "Unleashed" as a guide for installation of ISA Server 2004 (replacing ISA Server 2000) on the perimeter of a small office network that has ten servers on three different domains (including a web server and a mail server) and twenty workstations. I studied this book and Shinder's "Configuring ISA Server 2004" extensively before beginning the installation, and I had previous experience doing the installation and maintenance of the ISA 2000 installation that ISA 2004 replaced.

I preferred this book ("Unleashed") to the Shinder book as an installation guide, but I like Shinder as a reference because of its greater depth (twice as many pages). Both books promote ISA, but the Shinder books examines (in a defensive but very useful way) competing options to ISA more thoroughly. Shinder's book then would be more useful for those evaluating ISA versus competing products.

I also have the Microsoft MCSA/MCSE Training Kit. This book is the only ISA 2004 book that includes a 120-day trial version of ISA Server 2004. I have spent only two hours with this book but found the questions and answers at the end of each lesson helpful reflecting on key points. I did find a glaring error early on. It is not true that "the IP address assigned to the external interface [of the ISA server] must be routable ON [emphasis added] the Internet." The truth is that this IP address must be routable TO the Internet; and a private address (10.1.1.1 for example) will do just fine if there is (as in my case) a router with a public address between ISA and the Internet. Microsoft books are of coure authoratative and prep well for the exams in spite of an occasional error.

Our ISA server is connected on the Internet side with a private (nonroutable) IP address to an $89 Linksys router, which is configured with simple firewall filters. The Linksys router has a public IP address and connects to a Verizon DSL modem. A laptop in the DMZ between ISA and the router is used for testing ISA protection. The ISA server of course could be connected directly to the DSL modem; but we like the presence of the additional appliance (the Linksys router) as an additional level of defense. We run GFI (number one Exchange spam filter) on our Exchange server since ISA and most other firewall products only do token spam filtering.

"Unleashed" provided sufficiently detailed and accurate guidance for each step that I took: hardening the OS, installing ISA, configuring the networks attached to the ISA NICs, setting up firewall rules, publishing an IIS web server, publishing an Exchange mail server, and setting up Outlook web access. The total time required was only two hours even with a couple of errors.

ISA is a complex product with routing, caching proxy and reverse proxy servers, firewall (including stateful and advance application level inspection), VPN server, and simple spam filter. Michael Noel in "Unleashed" clearly shows how to use the greatly improved ISA administrative interface with its templates and wizards to configure my simple architecture and also more complex architectures that place servers in the DMZ as well as the limited single-homed topology with the ISA server in the DMZ. My company is not using VPN, but the book provides thorough coverage of VPN, which many be mission-critical to those with branch offices and road warriors.

Lastly, if you are new to ISA, be aware that ISA 2006 was released as a beta earlier this year. Many reviews suggest that ISA 2006 is not a major change. Microsoft says that upgrading from 2004 to 2006 will be supported. Amazon shows no titles as yet for ISA 2006. My guess is that the final release of 2006 will not come before the end of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-02-20

This is by far the best ISA Server book on the market.
Worth every penny I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a rising product!.......2005-11-28

This is THE book if you are looking to learn ISA 2004. It is structured in an easy-to-understand manner for windows admins who are familiar with Windows but may not have been exposed to ISA Server or are upgrading from ISA 2000. All in all this is the only book on the subject you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars Practical volume for assessing, designing and implementing ISA.......2005-11-13

I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding ISA architecture and how it might fit into our organization.

The book is well laid out, concise and readable. The first section lays out a high level view of ISA functions and provides a clear overview of how to assess which components are appropriate for solving specific network security issues. The section on deployment goes into more detail, explaining how to install and configure the various components of an ISA deployment. Part III on securing servers and services goes into the specific details of configuring ISA to protect messaging, web and RPC traffic.

Microsoft networking products continue to improve both in functionality and ease of use. Having guides like this make understanding and implementing new technology viable even for small organizations with limited budgets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with excellent examples.......2007-06-22

You come across very few people in life
a) who know what they are doing
b) who can teach others with good examples
c) who do not have any vested interest in sharing the knowledge.

The authors of this book come under this category. Not only they seem to have worked on many best of breed SOA projects, they have a very good ability to impart this knowledge. They discuss the pros and cons of all the options and let reader choose what is best for his/her situation.

This book seems to have the right mix of technical, management and business knowledge about SOA. Like many business oriented books it does not limit itself to discussing the organizational challenges and project management aspects. Like technical books, it does not limit itself to web services. This book opens your mind to the real IT landscape in today's organizations, particularly its heterogeneity. It opens your mind to thinking how SOA can connect these heterogeneous systems and make them productive. I have really enjoyed reading this book after completing my architect certification.

3 out of 5 stars Useful at an architectural level but not at a development level.......2007-01-10

May be I was expecting too much out of this book, it provides good categorization of different types of services and the roadmap - however I feel it lacks some details on the technical implementation part as to what tools/technologies/standards are ideal to implement this architecture.

Again, may be my expectation was not realistic.

5 out of 5 stars No nonsense, practical advice.......2006-11-03

Frankly, I thought SOA was just a bunch of marketing hype until I read this book. The authors begin by clearly explaining of the kinds of problems SOA is trying to solve, and how other architectures tried and failed (or partially succeeded) to solve these problems. In fact, you don't get a definition of SOA until chapter 4, which is a good thing. The advice and strategies are well-reasoned and practical. The organizational roadmap seems to be unique among SOA books, and is clearly derived from experience. The case studies highlight the kinds of tradeoffs each organization had to deal with, along with lessons learned. Finally, I found this book to be very readable and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and insightfull.......2006-05-31

This is a great introduction to SOA. The authors focus on the fundamentals of SOA, displaying both wisdom and honesty as they discuss the structure of an SOA, its essential and optional elements, strategies for SOA introduction (from technical and organizational points of view), SOA oriented project management techniques, success (and failure stories), etc.

The book is refreshing in the way that it avoids the vendor induced hysteria associated with new technologies choosing instead to calmly and objectively discuss the fundamental forces driving SOA adoption: federation, heterogeneity, agility, reuse.

Additionally, the authors display a healthy dose of independence as they discuss the merits and lack thereof of over-hyped technologies such as Enterprise Service Buses and BEPL systems. This is clearly a book written by people who have actually built SOAs, as opposed to sit on WS-* committees or implement SOA related junkware.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview.......2006-04-19

This book was an excellent broad overview of the technology related items associated with an SOA adoption. It is a good read for an IT manager or architect that is more concerned with the bigger picture. This book, combined with a book that has more of a business oriented slant, such as Service Orient or Be Doomed or Service Blueprint make a great combination for enterprise architects interested in the potential of SOA.

5 out of 5 stars This is my manifesto for SharePoint *Development* (as opposed to customization).......2007-09-24

In what I think of as my "pre-Pattison" era I was beating my head against SharePoint. The projects I'd inherited seemed unmanageable and deployment was a nightmare. For the project I was going to be starting from scratch, I was frantically coming up with excuses to not use SharePoint, although there was external pressure to use it.

Ted's book explains the key difference between SharePoint customization and SharePoint development, and focuses on best practices for the later. After reading it, I had a game plan for future development using SharePoint and also for bringing my two legacy apps under control.

5 out of 5 stars A hands on book .......2007-07-23

I agree with the other reviewers this is a book that is worth reading if you are working with Sharepoint development...

5 out of 5 stars By far, mandatory for all Sharepoint developers..........2007-07-23

I had a chance to take Ted's class on the subject matter of this book and found him to be extremely knowledgeable, insightful and practical with regard to developing for Sharepoint. Taking the class and having his book really took me to the next level understanding how WSS 3.0 work and can be extended. This book is a must read from cover to cover if you are new or want to get more acquainted with Sharepoint Services development.

5 out of 5 stars This book fills in the gaps in the SDK.......2007-07-11

Finally, there is a book that provides all the basic information that a developer needs to get started with WSS 3.0. Almost all that information that a developer would expect to find in the SDK documentation is finally available. If this trend continues, it seems that in the future, there will be no SDK documentation, only books to purchase, if you needed documentation.

Very well written, like all books in the 'Inside...' series!

5 out of 5 stars Staw Away Administrators .......2007-07-03

I love everything about this book when it comes to WSS. It is well written, follows a great path and has a whole lot of information.

The only down side its it is hard to tell by looking at the book that this is a developers book. This is not for admins but for developers. 100% development and offers nothing to admins.Admins go here Beginning SharePoint 2007 Administration: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

This is an excellent book! Stanek's Pocket Consultant books go far beyond the typical. He always uses his comprehensive knowledge to weave a fabric that balances the aim of a program with the fiddling details that drive admins crazy. As soon as I had skimmed the IIS book I set it aside and read one section a day. Nothing escapes his eye, every section clears up something that I had always wondered about. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars It worth.......2006-11-11

I got this book because i need it when i am working in my intern. This book is good for beginners and little above. It is easy to understand and the quality is great. It worth more than it cost.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner to mid-level book.......2006-02-07

This is an easy to read book with the detail you would expect from a pocket consultant. The author doesn't waste time with the basic chit-chat and does a good job of laying out the useful material.

Content includes initial setup, backup, performance monitoring/tuning and more advanced features such as registry and metabase settings. Advanced readers will eventually want to search for further information on some of these topics (scripting for example), but this is to be expected. The books leaves you feeling comfortable with what you've learned and with a good feel for where you might want to expand your learning in the future.

Most of my computer books end up getting re-sold or trashed, but I'll be keeping this one on the shelf for myself and others to use in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Stanek bats a thousand again!.......2005-08-22

This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail.

The in-depth coverage of every other subject is as accurate as it gets. I particularly appreciated the chapter about customization. But the book goes as far as covering in perfectly understandable terms the metabase, and more. Not to mention the incredibly accurate chapter about optimization.

I haven't read all of this book yet, and I probably never will, considering that some of the chapters are irrelevant once you've decided on which programming platform you are going to use. But what I've read so far I like.

This book is somewhat unusual in that it discusses two normally separate topics: setting up and administering IIS 6.0, and basic server-side programming techniques.

Concerning the part about setting up IIS, I was pleased to discover that the book also includes some very useful information about how Windows Server 2003 should be installed and set up to ensure good basic security. I've read two other books about IIS 6.0 and neither of them had this kind of material.

My one quibble is the lack of information about how to set up an FTP server for use in uploading and maintaining the content of a web site. OK, I know that FTP is an obsolete technology for doing this, but still, it is the traditional method, so a simple example showing the best way of doing this would have been nice. (On the other hand, the two other books I've read about IIS 6.0 didn't cover this either, although one of them included enough information to allow the proper technique to be figured out.)

Turning to the server-side programming part, there are examples of simple applications using the following technologies: ASP, COM, ASP.NET, ATL and ISAPI. The book does not include a CD-ROM but one of the authors has a web site from which you can download all of the sample files, 19 MB in all.

Two final criticisms: There is no mention of possible alternative programming platforms such as Perl, PHP, MySQL, etc., and where to find them. And some of the screen shots have a resolution that makes the text almost impossible to read.

In conclusion, if you're involved in both setting up an IIS 6.0 web server and in creating a web site to run on it then you'll find this book very useful.

The second edition of ASP in a Nutshell gives developers of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) a quick reference guide for looking up object usage on a dime. This guide is geared toward working ASP programmers who need to get their answers quickly, without wading through long examples.

The book is organized into three parts: an introduction to ASP, a language reference, and appendices. This edition has been updated for IIS 5.0 and ASP 3.0--respectively the latest flavors of Microsoft's flagship Web server and scripting engines. The ASP introduction is very brief, but it adequately explains the basic concepts behind ASP and server-side scripting.

The heart of the title is the language reference that covers the intrinsic ASP objects, plus ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) 2.6, Collaboration Data Objects, file access, and more. Each section is tagged with staggered page markers that usually make it unnecessary to resort to the book's index to find a topic.

While there are no full-blown code examples, the small code fragments that are included for most objects are valuable in illustrating usage. Throughout, the information is accurate and to the point, which is exactly what busy programmers really need in a desktop reference. --Stephen W. Plain

    Topics covered:
  • ASP overview
  • Application of ASP objects
  • ASPError
  • ObjectContext
  • Request

ASP in a Nutshell provides the high-quality reference documentation that web application developers really need to create effective Active Server Pages. It focuses on how features are used in a real application and highlights little-known or undocumented features. This book also includes an overview of the interaction between the latest release of Internet Information Server (version 5) and ASP 3.0, with an introduction to the IIS object model and the objects it comprises. The examples shown in this section and throughout the book are illustrated in VBScript. The main components of this book are: Like other books in the "In a Nutshell" series this book offers the facts, including critical background information, in a no-nonsense manner that users will refer to again and again. It is a detailed reference that enables even experienced web developers to advance their ASP applications to new levels.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ASP reference book.......2005-10-06

This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-05-17

As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference and code samples, but..........2004-05-07

Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book. I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP. However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to brush up ASP concepts before moving to ASP.NET.......2003-04-21

I was an ASP programmer several years ago after which I moved to a different technology. Now, I need to come to speed on .NET, but unfortunately all the ASP.NET books make innumerous references to the old ASP which I have almost forgotten.

The book helped me *VERY* quickly go through ASP 3.0 and now I feel very comfortable reading the .NET books and can now truly appreciate ASP.NET.

    A GREAT reference book!

    4 out of 5 stars Needs a VBScript/JScript book to complement it..........2003-02-20

Be warned, if like I did, you think that this is the only book you'll need to be able to build ASP scripts; you're very much mistaken. Whenever I recommend this book, I always recommend it alongside VBScript in a Nutshell as you really need knowledge of an ASP supported scripting language before you can use ASP in a Nutshell to it's full potential!

This is yet another reference book that I've owned both editions of because I thought it was useful enough to update; but then, my site is developed using ASP, so I'm probably biased in this respect. Ok, so I got the 1st Edition late on in the game and was a little reluctant to part with cash for the new edition - but as IIS 5 started to become standard for Windows hosting, and I had access to it after getting Windows XP Pro... I thought it was about time I updated it.

ASP in a Nutshell is my first point of reference when I'm looking up the properties of a particular ASP object. I've also found it an invaluable guide for connecting and manipulating ASP scripts that used ADO for data storage and manipulation. For a while it was the only book I owned that covered the issue of connecting ASP scripts to databases.

Most of the installable components I'd never heard of before getting the book, just as well really because few are of much use - even if they aren't available on your system, a lot can be easily reproduced. The areas I find myself most frequently refering to are the main set of ASP objects, the FileSystem Object and the ActiveX Data Objects. These go into enough detail to keep all but the experienced programmers happy.

For those new to the Windows scene, there is a brief but detailed guide to setting up ASP to work with your IIS server; but it's hardly rocket science since a clean install of IIS will set up most (if not all) of what you need anyway! If you use ASP regularly, or you intend to, then ASP in a Nutshell should be on your desktop... but please remember it won't fulfill all your ASP development needs without another book to fill in the language gaps. What book you choose to accompany it depends on your language and experience... I personally like VBScript in a Nutshell.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good content poorly organized.......2007-01-27

Tom Shinder is the recognized non-Microsoft ISA expert. He wrote the seminal (if only) book on ISA 2000 and now has written on ISA 2004. He also runs a companion website.

A good 200+ pages is devoted to marketing rehash and comparison of competing products. While there is some discussion of relevant concepts, most of this would be better served as website content. The competition changes rapidly enough that any such information in print quickly becomes obsolete. This book is supposed to be about configuring ISA 2004, not in-depth reviews of the product space.

The book's presentation quality is poor. Type is uneven in places, page numbers are cut off, and there are spelling errors. The organization is deficient as well. I continually lost my way and had to flip back to the TOC (which at 22 pages is too large to be of much use), Preface, and chapter intros to recapture the author's chain of thoughts. For example, Shinder describes Chapter 4's objective as preparing the infrastructure before installing ISA 2004, yet the chapter is filled with multiple ISA installation/configuration screen prints and instructions. He also describes how the various ISA clients react with particular network configuration, yet he does not introduce the concepts of clients until a later chapter.

The book is redundant in its presentations, as a chapter will begin with an overview of a series of concept, discuss the configuration of each concept, then discuss the various installation and configuration items for each concept, rather than describing the entirety of each concept one by one. There are occasions where he neglects to give context, such that advice seems contradictory. The typical "quick install" section is hidden about 500 pages into the book, and there's duplicate versions.

Despite the previous criticisms, the content of the book is informational and friendly to those new to the product, giving step by step instructions. When one considers the book along with the companion website and the author's personal commitment to assist and provide advice - as well as the lack of other books on the subject - "Configuring ISA Server 2004" gets a high rating. I will be looking for the 2006 update.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Reference Material.......2007-01-09

Great reference manual, easy to read, great examples. I use this as a reference book for quick settings changes and deployments. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide for Beginners to ISA.......2006-08-28

I was totally new to ISA and came to know about this book from the ISAServer forum.

It not only gives in-sight into the inner workings of the product but also speaks about the philosophy and history behind the creation of this versatile tool.

Understanding, Installing and Configuring ISA is just a piece of cake with this book

5 out of 5 stars The Best ISA 2004 Reference ever.......2006-07-10

Don't be fooled guys, even with the articles being available online you wont find such a complete explanation posted into the isa server's resource site. This guy writes ISA documentation for MS, so there you go, he is da man when it comes to the product and has been dealing with it since the beginning, ISA 2006 is still in RC and he already wrote a couple of articles regarding how to configure new features. Definitely, a must have if you are an ISA Admin or consultant looking for some information and advice to do the right setup for the given network.

4 out of 5 stars Too Much, Too Soon?.......2006-05-22

Since the early ISA Server 2000 days, author Tom Shinder has been the undisputed king of the ISA Server world. (Small world, isn't it.) His great expertise is complimented by a nice professional writing style that can be understood by any serious system administrator. If ISA is a big part of your responsibilities, you will want to have this book.

However, if you just want to get ISA Server 2004 up and running for the first time, this 1,024-page book is too much. If you are sitting there with the CD in hand and want to be up and running in three or four hours, be aware that the first 300 pages are devoted to a discussion of new features and a lengthy defense and comparison of ISA to the lower-end firewall appliances (non-PC hardware with firmware). This was very interesting reading for me (with four years managing ISA on a small network with ten servers and twenty workstations), but it may be too much too soon if firewalls are not high on your list of interesting things.

I searched hard for other ISA books and bought "ISA Server Unleashed" as well. "Unleashed" is 552 pages and quickly gets to installation and then configuration, exactly what you may want to get up and running quickly. In addition to "Unleashed," there seem to be just two other books that may serve for installation guides. The first is Shinder's "How to Cheat at Installing ISA Server 2004" (according to another reviewer, a "just the facts" version of the larger book reviewed here). Lastly, there is the "Administrator's Pocket Consultant." (I have read only reviews for the "Cheat" and "Consultant" books.)

Don't misunderstand, Shinder covers just about everything before he is done; and if you want your ISA expert's badge, you need to have this big book. I'll use "Unleashed" during installation and use Shinder's book for guidance on best practices.

If your finances suggest just one book, do this big Shinder book if you have prior ISA experience. Otherwise check out the small number of other offerings. And don't forget to search for ISA Server and Shinder on the web. You'll find a website with many long articles by Shinder.

By the way, I share Shinder's view that ISA is a great product. My ISA 200 installation has run robustly for four years; but I was looking to offload to ISA some of the spam filtering burden that now rests on an Exchange Server plus GFI installation and decided to move up to the latest ISA version at the same time.

    Book Description

The Complete Guide to Servers and Server+ is more than just an exam guide to the CompTIA Server+ Exam. It's also a blueprint for a career in server management. With its easy-to-read style, The Complete Guide to Servers and Server+ serves as a good training manual and will serve as a valuable reference after obtaining your certification. This book takes the approach that a good server manager should know the ins and outs of building a server from scratch. With this emphasis throughout the book, The Complete Guide to Servers and Server+ is an essential part of any network manager's library.

2 out of 5 stars Caution, Do Not Rely Solely on this publication.......2007-05-31

I too have just completed the Server+ exam, the previous day, and like the other reviewer I also thoroughly agree, there was considerable information on the exam that was not covered at all in this book. Things like NAS/SAN, iSCSI/FCIP, fibre channel and service tools. Plus, although the author did touch on UPS's, there were questions asked that he did not cover and subsequently were not represented in this book.

What I really find galling though in light of past publications that this individual has written (A+ and Network+ to name a couple) is the numerous grammatical and or missing words I came across while reading this book. We have all heard of Intel but why was AMD called American Micro Devices and not Advanced as it should be? Clearly, either this tome was rushed into publication and the publisher didn't bother or had a rather piss poor proofreader in looking over this book. Consequently, I'd be hard pressed to want to use a future write from this author and/or use this publisher again (Thomson).

It's clear, DO NOT EXPECT TO PASS THE EXAM IF THIS IS THE ONLY PUB YOU PLAN TO USE. Previous hands on experience working with servers is very much going to be in one's favour!

2 out of 5 stars Not enough and hard to read.......2007-02-19

I just got back from the Server+ test, and I passed the exam. However half of the questions on the exam were not mentioned in this book. This book touches mostly the hardware, and the writer clearly has this background. However there is so much more then hardware, no matter how great his passion about server hardware is. This is why this book is not enough for the exam. In-depth information is missing about the server and the network, and too much information is given on things not needed for the exam. Also, though the book is written in a loose attitude, the writer is actually sometimes hard to understand in what he writes. Even though this book gives a lot of information, I can now hardly believe this is a Comptia approved studybook for the Server+ exam.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, Bad Supplemental Material.......2006-12-09

I'll make this review short and to the point -- the book itself is a great learning tool, and is a very easy read. However, I was quite disappointed to see that only odd-numbered questions have solutions to them in this book. It appears that you need to spend ANOTHER $20+ to get an e-resource CD that includes all solutions. At $75, this is an absolute ripoff. Unfortunately, there aren't many other Server+ books offered at this time.

In summary, buy this book to review all the Server+ objectives, but look elsewhere for practice questions.
