Works for getting the basics and cert prep.......2007-06-10
Not being interested in certification, I was looking for something that would get me the basics, and tell me where to go to get the meat. This book is doing that. Includes a MS SQL Server 2000 120 day use installation disk. The install includes the "Books On Line" (a source of a lot of meat).
Not caring if this is good for cert test prep, and having never taken a cert test, I can't tell you if it is a good prep. It hase provided a good portion of the information I was looking for, and helped me understand the changes / inhancements in MS SQL 2005.
4 stars because I am seldom overwhelmed with something.
Simply badly designed for exams.......2006-05-22
I believe that the writers made some bad choices when they first began to write this book. First of all, unlike most other certification books the exam goals are not together in one section. Instead there are whole chapters for queries, indexes, views, etc with all of the information about each topic in that chapter. So if you wanted to read about 'query optimization' you would have to read the sections within that chapter about query optimation from the queries chapter, from the index chapter, some from the views chapter, etc. So if you want to review a specific topic that you are not as good at you will be doing a lot of page flipping.
Second the book is too thick. It contains a lot of information that i doudt that you will actually get on the exam (like estimating the size of a table). It also has about a 100-150 page objective by objective index at the back with questions. But these sections seem to be fragmented from the rest of the book and do not have enough information to truely learn the objective. The first part of the book seems to be written as an introduction to databases book rather then a certification book, and i dont think that i would use this book to introduce myself to databases anyway.
Third: the practice certification exam does not work. The practice exam is an exam that seems to have an embeded internet explorer and is ran by javascript. I have no clue why you would use javascript to create a practice exam. Anyway i get the 'error running these scripts, would you like to continue running scripts on this page error' and i am unable to run the exam. I am using windows xp service pack 2 internet explorer 6.1.
I personally went out and bought the exam cram for 229 and it seems to be much better.
This Won't Prepare You For 70-229 But a Good Starting Point........2005-05-17
This book is a very easy read, explains concepts clearly, but lacks the kind of detail necessary for passing the 70-229 exam, especially if you are taking this as an elective on the developer track. It will get you through most of what you need to know at 10,000 feet, but it will not take you to a passing score. It taught me things I had never used and for that it is well worth the time investment. I also love the fact that you can install the "e-book" on a laptop and a desktop at home and never carry the hard cover book around.
I had been using SQL Server 2000 for years and thought this would be a snap for me. After reading this book I thought I was ready for the test. On the practice exam I saw words that were used that I had no idea what the context was. Those functions are not discussed in this book but you can trust they will be covered completely on the test! You will thoroughly need to know things like triggers, functions and constraints, and all their possible parameters, or you will not be prepared for the exam.
After going through the book you will be ready for the material that is available at the practice test vendors Microsoft recommends at the Microsoft Web sites for MCAD & MCSD Certification. I am not trying to promote any company and I have nothing to gain by saying the following: The study guide I purchased for about the cost of this book prepared me for the exam. This book prepared me for the study guide.
Book for SQL novice.......2005-04-17
This book is good for a person whom does not know any thing about SQL and Database Designing. If you are an Experience whom trying to get ready for the exam. then save your money and look for different one. This book will just wast your time.
Microsoft Blew it - Again.......2005-03-22
This book is so full of ommissions and errors that it is virtually usless as a tutorial or reference.

rich99man.......2007-06-13
The book covers the practical training side of this rather broad topic quite well. Having no business experience in this area, I was looking for a vehicle to get this SQL Server thing down for my own use and as preparation for certification. I found the explanations of the subject areas were well-written, thorough, and helpful. Other sources such as Books Online and some of the more reference oriented texts are quite valuable supplements.
Having taken certification exams in the past, it was clear that the task of exam preparation is a separate animal and overpromised here. There is the ExamCram2 series that picks through this material and goes a long way to addressing that objective. Having certified with this pair, maybe there is a new job somewhere.
The book could use a reedit, but overall it is quite coherent.
MCDBA, MCSE, MCSD, MCAD Training Guide.......2006-03-09
The book met the requirements of the course it was being used for... it was how ever a little bit lax on the code portion...when it came to doing the project it left a bit to be desired in clarity of how to build a data base in SQL...
Horrible!!.......2005-11-09
Why can't authors ever flow through a book in an ordely manner? What is the point of jumping from chapter to chapter? For example, many times through out this book references are being made to up coming chapters about specific topics in chapters that don't belong there. Why do you tell the reader about an up coming topic in a chapter that doesn't belong there and then ask a question about it in the chapter test. Why even make a chapter about that specific topic if your going to include it in a chapter that doesn't belong there? Thats a little redundent!! Also the author likes to give you examples on how to do certain things the right way, and then tests you on something he never covered in the chapter. If the topic has nothing to do with the chapter, do not include in the chapter. If you do include it into a chapter in which it doesn' belong, don't include it into the chapter test. How do you expect the reader to completely understand and answer the question if he or she knows nothing about it? Unless, your wanting the reader to stop what there doing, flip to the chapter and read it, then go back to the previous chapter your testing on just for that one little question that doesn't belong. Rediculous!!
Good, but not as dead on as others in the series.......2005-10-15
I just passed the 70-229 exam this morning with an 862. My study strategy involved reading this book cover to cover over a 2 week period and taking some uCertify practice exams.
While I have absolutely LOVED the other books for the MCAD (by Amit Kalani) I feel this book was not nearly as effective. It had a lot of focus on items that the exam didn't touch (and neither did the 4 practice exams I took) and it actually didn't touch on some items that were on the exam.
I would, however, still recommend the book. It was easy to read and had good flow and descriptions; it is an excellent base to add to with exams or other cram style books. I would say that this book got me to 60% and the practice exams got me the remaining 26% of my score.
great book.......2005-09-01
not only it prepared me for the exam, but also gave me quite insight in practical enviornment.

Oblivion and Perdition.......2005-11-16
I purchased this book with the expectation that it would help me prepare for the exam. The CD provides practice exams and other resources to give one the impression they are on their way to certification. However, there are numerous errors in the book as well as on the CD, particularly with the "Edge Test" software, which incorrectly grades tests and does not allow users to select the right answers. This issue is actually moot, since the practice tests actually do not address problems presented in the certification exam. I recommend using the on-line resources affiliated with the testing organizations. They also provide discounted vouchers.
A very useful book despite all the errors!.......2004-07-29
Let me just get it out of the way by mentioning first that this book contains many errors - perhaps more than an average technical book. However, most are typographical and do not degrade the value of the book that much.
Having said that, the coverage of all the exam topics in this book is nothing short of superb! The explanations are detailed, clear and with numerous examples. For the purposes of the exam, I would go as far as to say that you may not need any other supplemental material (which is very rare for a study guide)!
This book covered all but 2 questions on my 70-229 exam. One of them was regarding the full syntax of OPENXML and the other was regarding Replication.
The questions at the end of the chapters are very similar to those on the test (again, rare for a study guide). If you can answer most of those questions correctly, you will do well on the real exam.
All in all, in my opinion, this is the best book out there for the 70-229 exam.
The best book to start.......2004-05-26
This book was a good way to start studying for the exam. After finishing the book you are almost ready.
Maybe the following areas weren't completely covered:
Cursors (it is focused on T-SQL syntax. Other books will describe ADO and ODBC cursors as well).
The topic Retrieve, filter, group, summarize, and modify data by using Transact-SQL requires even more examples and more questions because this is a complex topic.
Good book with bad CD.......2004-04-03
I used this book to prepare for exam that I successfully passed. My overall impression from the book is very positive. It is well-structured; all explanations are clear and concise. It is strongly focused at exam and doesn't spend your time on irrelevant topics. I think it covers not less than 90% of what you need for exam. I recommend reading it along with enquiring Books Online.
However it has noticeable amount of typos. Most of them are quite obvious, but I can recall at least a couple of typos that really made me confused.
The companion CD is much worse. I expected the tests from CD to be a real help, but their format made them very inconvenient to use. Moreover, some test questions seemed to be corrupted. Honestly I think the CD is nearly useless.
SUMMARY: this book is not ideal; however it can be certainly used to prepare for the exam.
Good starter book but not a complete study guide.......2004-01-30
This book does cover all of the topics on the exam but not in enough detail. There are several items that are only touched on that require much more detail if your going to pass the test. I was able to use this book to brush up on some things but without my 3 years working knowledge of SQL Server and my 7 years working knowledge of T-SQL along with a good test prep, I wouldn't have been able to pass the test.
This isn't to say that the book is complete junk. It does touch on a good deal of material. I'll be keeping the book as a reference for those things that I use very often and the other junior developers I work with. I won't be turning to it, though, if I need detailed information on anything.
Book Description

An economical alternative to classroom instruction, this kit enables students to set their own pace and learn by doing!
Customer Reviews:
Pathetic to say the least........2006-02-09
It amazes me really; how come a company like Microsoft - the author of the exam - is willingly gave away it is potential position as the best provider of the exams training kits which - at least in this case - is very far from being true.
I passed this exam a month ago, while I am restricted by NDA from speaking about the questions; I can tell you that nothing in this book has any thing to do with this exam whatsoever. The questions in this book are too elementary; it is like asking you what is 4 + 4 in a SAT study kit (you got the picture). The only thing you can get out of this book is that if you are unable to answer ALL the questions correct in about an hour or two, rest assured that you are not ready for that exam but the not the other way around. Meaning, if you are able to answer all of them, by no means this - by it self- means that you are ready. Invest your money some where else or if you are in Redmond WA pay a visit to the library where you will find my copy, I am in my way to donate it.
Sloppy proof-reading wastes good beginners guide.......2004-04-04
If exam's are your motivation then this is only the starting point not the "Learn by rote" you need to guarantee success. If you're new to SQL Server then this training kit does what would be an excellent job if of gently introducing you to the world of SQL Server and relational databases, let down by sloppy proofreading. Some examples: Page 106 has three tables to illustrate normalisation: a book table and TWO author tables. I think what they meant was a book table, an author table and an AuthorBook table and someone just didn't check the table captions. On page 73 the sp_helpprotect stored procedure is introduced. The example won't work because the stored procedure is called sp_helprotect. And when you hit brick walls with examples (try turning debugging on - the book makes it sound dead simple, the reality is you'll hit an "unable to connect" message that requires extensive research and additional work if you're running SP3) there's nowhere to turn. It's a shame because the book does an excellent job in other ways. But it's lazy. It gives the easy and obvious examples and sample questions and whenever anything that might require a bit of real explanation comes up if you're lucky it says "Go read somewhere else", if you're unlucky the subject doesn't come up at all. I'd still recommend it as a "gentle" way into SQL Server for those new to databases, but it could have been so much better with just a little more effort
Not so bad.......2004-02-27
This book contains enough information in the following areas:
stored procedures, triggers, XML, entities and indexes.
It also contains poor information in the following areas:
Managing and manipulation data.
Cursors.
SQL Server tuning.
I strongly recommend the Microsoft self-paced book. It contains more material for the exam.
Not enough.......2003-11-20
Good reference book, and covers subject matter decent, but still leaves a lot of details that you are tested on out. This is one of the harder Microsoft exams, so study hard for this one. I would definately use another resource if I had it to do over again.
Did not prepare me well for the exam........2003-07-23
This book is supposed to prepare you for the 70-229 exam. It fails on almost every level, the questions at the end of each chapter are nothing like test questions. You'd be infinately better prepared if you read the sql server books online. Not only are they free, but they include the information you'll need to pass the exam.
If you want this book as resource to learn SQL Server 2000 i'd tell you to look elsewhere. SAMS 'Microsoft SQL Server 2000 unleashed' title is far more comprehensive.
In summary, i'd avoid this book like the plague. I had to read it because my training school required me to and I regret the wasted time. My time would have been much better spent reading through the books online.

Consice and Comprehensive at That .......2004-09-18
Well, I was learning MS SQL with this book after I had some development experience with MySQL. This actually was the right book for me and I was able to quickly study those aspects of MS SQL that are different from MySQL. I was not only able to pass the exam but also acquired skills that I am currenty using on my job.
You know, I noticed that my fellow developers are trying to programm all database transactions with SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT and DELETE only. When they need to delete a record and all other records that are referenced from it they create a long list of quieries, which works, but is actully a time spent in vain because you can create a better, easier and FASTER solution by implementing only one feature available in MS SQL. So study this book and you will know how to deal with MS SQL Server correctly.
What is proof reading.......2004-08-23
I think the author did good but it all went to pot at the proofreaders. A typo, error, or omission in 1 out of 15 pages. I had to write stuff in and cross stuff out. It would throw the novice SQL person off on XML alone because of the thouroughly botched job between XML auto and XML raw and claiming that the ELEMENT phrase can be used with XML RAW which it can not. One of many errors. Buy the MS training book, read BOL, get transcenders, but stay clear of this unless you are a seasoned pro that can pick out the mistakes from the good stuff
Terrible Book.......2004-07-16
Of all the technical books I have read, this is probably by far the worst. There are many typos; errors where the book uses the wrong word and throws you off; and inconsistencies where the text says something then the answer to the practice question says something different. But additionally, the book covers some materials insufficiently to be at all useful, in other words it is too condensed. This book is not enough to pass the exam.
Pick another one.......2004-02-18
I gave this one star for effort. Everything else gets lost in the number of errors and the superficial coverage. There are more typing errors than my usual first draft, and the number of technical errors is completely unacceptable. In addition, since Coriolis is out of business, there is no errata information available (although downloading 400 Gig of corrections is not my idea of fun).
The IDEA of the book is good, and the CONCEPT of the test questions is very good, but the final product is probably not worth your time -- unless, of course, you want to use it as a testing system to see if you too can find the 3 or more errors on every page!!
The Osborne press "MCDBA SQL Server 2000 Database Design Study Guide" 0-07-212693-0 is a much better book (although it has SOME errors).
The Microsoft Press "SQL Server 2000 database design and implementation" book is excellent, and the errors found in rev 1 are already corrected in rev 2 of the book!! But, it is a 'learning' book, andt a 'cram' book.
Good luck on your exam.
not the best one ..........2002-08-23
I passed the exam but only because I got rid of this book and studied from MSDN a week before. The book covers most of the topics as if they were in a high school curriculum. I'd say if you are preparing for the MCSE/MCSD/MCP exam then DO NOT go by this book. But is fairly ok if you'd want an introduction to SQL Server 2000 before digging deeper into another detailed exam material.

Poorly organized, too little practical information.......2004-12-04
This book has two main flaws that caused me to abandon it after the first few chapters.
First, it spends an inordinate amount of time on theory, compared to giving practical examples.
Second (and a truly fatal flaw) is that during the course of the book, the reader is directed to build a database that is essential to reading the following chapters. The reader is encouraged to think theoretically about the general structure of the database, but is given no specifics. Yet specifics are exactly what the later chapters require! If the reader follows the directions, it will become necessary to make numerous structure changes later.
Worse yet, the "correct" database is not included on the CD, nor is it available online. That makes it impossible for the more advanced user to skip chapters that he doesn't need.
This book has become one of my more expensive doorstops.
I passed the test..........2003-04-22
I bought this book the day before I took the exam because I was struggling with the measure up tests. I read through the book in one day and passed the exam the next day.
I was disappointed that the exam questions on the CD were the same as in the book. I was hoping there would be a different set of questions.
I recommend this book if you're just looking to pass the exam and also have access to the course material. It will help reinforce what I learned in the course material in an exam-type way.
good.......2003-03-17
This book is just a test book.
If you are able to pass all the tests in the CD, then you will not have problems with the real test. However, as always, some ot the questions are wrong.
The software for the test is not so good, if you just take the test for the third time, half of the questions will be known to you.
Since the main reason you buy this book, is to check your preparation pro-certification, i think i can give it 3 on 5 stars.
If you are italian, you should not take the italian version of the book, it is just written in something different from a language for IT professionals.
Not Really Accurate.......2003-03-16
I had thought that this book and the sample Exam on the CD would be a realy close reflection of the exam content. But whan I took the exam, it didn't seem like that was the case. The book and sample exam seemed to focus on Admin. stuff while the exam seemed to emphasize SQL, TSQL and database design a lot more. I also don't think the book prepares you for security-related questions very well. But it might still be worthwhile for someone who feels ready to take the exam and just wants some practice.
Not much help..........2001-12-04
Having passed the SQL Server 6.5 exam, I didn't even find this much help as a review or prep for SQL 2000... Had to get a better book immediately!
