5 out of 5 stars Must Buy if Upgrading from IT Management to CIO.......2007-08-07

Great help for someone that has just upgraded
from IT Management to a CIO role and needed to
upgrade as well his agenda. Excellent source of inspiration
and perfect guide for a profession that is still
under transformation. Definitely a must have.

The book is focused (and written by) on world class CIO positions,
but I found it equally useful for smaller scale CIOs.
It's exactly there that it lacks some information
on the organization of smaller IT groups ( <20 persons).

If you are a CIO then buy it. If you are an IT manager
you need something else.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Every CIO.......2006-04-01

Excerpt from review on bsmDigest.com:
"Mark Lutchen's groundbreaking book continues to influence technology leaders with its vision for building mature IT organizations. As more CIOs and CEOs grapple with the challenge of applying effective management processes to their increasingly critical technology organizations, this engaging book offers very practical advice for doing it successfully. Drawing on his experience both as an actual CIO managing a large, global IT organizations and as a management consultant working with many large organizations, Lutchen delivers a clear, integrated vision for enlightened IT management."

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic and clear........2005-06-24

I have only one simple statement - where were you Mark when I started my IT career 17 years ago? Today I would have been a CIO! I highly recommend this book for those starting out their careers in IT as it gives a big picture look to the field. Own it and refer to the clear and relevant graphics in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-06-03

In the fall of 2003, the Harvard Business Review published an article advancing the proposition that "IT doesn't matter." The article's author suggested that because IT was now a commodity, and everyone had it, it no longer conveyed any distinctive competitive advantage and therefore, strategically, did not matter. In fact, at many companies, IT doesn't matter as much as it should - not because it is a commodity that other companies also use, but because most companies don't get every potential benefit from their IT. To advance your business agenda effectively, make IT a real part of the business. Author Mark D. Lutchen shows managers, particularly CEOs and CIOs, why IT is not fully a part of business at the moment, and what it will take to turn IT into a competitive, strategic asset. We recommend this useful, well-written, clearly organized book to anyone whose job involves decisions on IT budgets, organization, investments or strategy.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for IT professionals developing a career roadmap.......2004-03-27

This is a fabulous book for experienced or aspiring IT managers whose goal is to prepare for ascension through the ranks, especially to the CIO level. In simple yet rich language, Mark presents a clear picture of the future of the IT organization and the competencies needed in the CIO and senior team heading up this professional services operation. The examples and case studies are rich with insights. In short, this book is pragmatic and weighty, yet also highly readable and I dare say outright enjoyable. I highly recommend it as a must read for anyone who wants to develop an effective IT career roadmap. Thank you Mark Lutchen.

4 out of 5 stars Say It with charts.......2007-08-27

Very good as a quick guide for building presentations based on data and charts, but a little more information about when to use it type of chart would be very usefull

5 out of 5 stars Getting the point across.......2006-03-02

As an equity analyst, consultant, and communication specialist, I saw - and made - dozens of colorful presentations with the best charts that excel can draw that simply didn't work.

After the failed presentation, a consultant or analyst who knows how to get his point across will draw a simple diagram or chart on a white board that will be far more convincing and effective than the entire PowerPoint presentation.

This book is for the person who wants to get point across.

4 out of 5 stars Consider it part of a broad business education.......2005-10-25

When one considers the amount of time/money they spend on improving their job skills, it would seem obvious that a high-value read like 'Say it with Charts' would be worth some consideration. It provides a framework for using charts to your advantage- and not just within oral presentations. If anything, this book will increase your willingness to use charts to your advantage when selling an opinion. It forces the user to think about exactly what it is they are trying to say - and then produce a professional looking chart to relay that message.

Any edition will do - the content will not change with the times. The underlying principles can be quite powerful and can be the difference between a simple presentation and one which elicites praise.

4 out of 5 stars Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication .......2005-10-24

The book is tremendous for anybody who wants to a make a presentation effective by making it easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars helpful - nothing more need be said.......2004-05-04

Full disclosure - I used to work at IBM and as an entry level consultant with an MBA there the first thing you are is the .ppt whipping post. That being said, the IBM training program covers many of the concepts from this book. Why?? Simple, they work. Is it the be all and end all? No. The only thing that can help you assemble good content is practice, practice, practice - with a healthy dose of constructive criticism from someone that knows what they are talking about. I just got through a days worth of presentations last Friday to one of the most senior technology people at a major government agency. All I can say is that I really, really, really wish that the people presenting before and after me had taken 5 mintues to review this book before getting in front of that crowd - it would have prevented some spectacular flamouts.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2007-03-05

As malware and other vicious threats evolve, security professionals must stay abreast of the methods and strategies used to mitigate them. If you're looking for additional information to strengthen your security management posture, this book will get you started. The only downside is the lack of "deeper" information on phishing. Phishing is becoming a prominent threat to organizations, and requires the immediate attention of executives and security specialists.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is The Corner Stone of Your Security Initiative.......2005-08-22

This guide on security is OUTSTANDING. No one book can embody everything; however, this short but powerful book should encourage every person in our organization to accept responsibility for security.

If you are looking to continue the growth and development of your team (as well as improved security for your organization) then buy and distribute several copies of this book.

I sincerely believe that the experience and information that this book offers can help any organization to become better and more effective at security management.

This book is a very useful tool for getting non-IT executives to understand the imperative behind maintaining an information security management program.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource, but boring at times.......2005-02-10

A fun book on security for executives and managers? Unbelievable, you'd say? This one ("The Executive Guide to Information Security") comes pretty close.

On the down side, do not look at this book for technology coverage. Almost total lack of coverage of intrusion prevention, spyware, spam as well as some Symantec bias (understandable, considering the publisher) make this book much stronger on the policy, process and "big picture" coverage rather on modern technical threats and countermeasures. Slightly confusing coverage of vulnerability management also falls in the same category. However, given the target audience of CEOs and CFOs, this is certainly excusable.

The book introduces the executives to basic security concepts such as "defense-in-depth", "people, process, technology", etc, and goes into details on using them for organizing security for their organizations.

I also appreciated the sections on planning and executing a security strategy and measuring security by using various included checklists and questionnaires. 50-point security evaluation framework based on"best practices" was another valuable piece. The books also address one of the important questions of organizational security: in-house vs outsourced security.

Regulations and laws also occupy a significant part of the book. The coverage is high-level and provides few details, appropriate given the target audience. A section on future security was pretty insightful and enjoyable to read!

Overall, I think the book will be one of the first (and, so far, best) books about security for the "C-level" crowd.

Book Description

Praise for the The Executive's Guide to Information Technology

"This book is important reading. It offers practical, real-world insight and pragmatic no-nonsense approaches for people who have a stake in corporate IT. "
—Lynda Applegate, Henry R. Byers Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

"Information systems and processes are very important parts of our due diligence assessment of a company—yet the jargon is often more difficult to understand than many foreign languages. Baschab and Piot effectively translate IT into words and concepts that businesspeople can easily understand and act upon. This book is a helpful reference guide for corporate executives and private equity groups of all types."
—Neal Aronson, Managing Partner, Roark Capital Group

"Business success increasingly depends on effective use of IT. Effective use of IT depends on the kind of in-depth, practical insight in this book. Baschab and Piot provide a pragmatic approach to information systems investment that should be required reading for senior executives and CIOs alike."
—Erik Brynjolfsson, Schussel Professor of Management, Director of the Center for Digital Business, MIT

"This book should provide valuable guidance for management and technology consultants. The Executive's Guide to Information Technology provides field-proven insight on all important aspects of IT planning and execution, from governance to applications to operations and infrastructure."
—Gary J. Fernandes, former vice chairman, EDS, member of the Board of Directors, Computer Associates

"Baschab and Piot do a great job of laying out the fundamental issues and challenges that every IT organization faces. More often than not, the issues are not technical in nature, but are a reflection of how the IT and business teams work together to define, execute, and implement new business tools. The threshold issue is leadership. Often it is difficult for business leaders to feel that they have the skills and perspective to provide that leadership on technical projects. The Executive's Guide to Information Technology provides non-technical business leaders a solid framework for engaging with their IT peers."
—Tom Nealon, Chief Information Officer, J.C. Penney

5 out of 5 stars A well written practical handbook.......2004-08-19

I personally learned a million from reading and enjoying a well written practical handbook, I recommend all IT folks to keep a copy of the "The Executive Guide To IT" book handy in their workplaces as it covers the major areas that any IT, IT business partner and senior management personnel.

5 out of 5 stars Before you bring in Booz.Allen, read this book.......2004-02-04

This is an excellent book with regard to understanding and managing technology.

Each chapter is filled with so much information, it begs the reader to slow down and soak up the surprising and insightful statistics about IT.

What's so unique about John's book is that he's writing to thousand of IT professionals, and yet it feels as if he has spent time in your department interviewing your staff and clients personally. That's how poignant this book is.

John's ability to explain complex and dynamic problems in easy to understand language using anecdotes and allegories is uncanny. The book is founded on fundamental truths and principles that have been around for ages. It's John's ability to bring these principles to life by practically applying them to the circumstances we face very day. This makes the book both practical for the here-and-now as well as the IT professionals of tomorrow.

I have used many of the templates suggested in this book and find them easy to understand, quickly deployable, and readily accepted by team members and clients. It's surprising, but it is the simplicity behind the templates that makes them so usable and effective. As mentioned many times in the book, applying complex technological solutions to simple requests is a common problem within IT.

This book is like an IT bible. It's not something you read once and put on the shelf. It's something that should be referenced often. Whenever you feel you might want to consult with Booz.Allen or McKinsey... reach for this book first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Guide for Medium to Large Businesses.......2004-01-01

I am the CTO of a small financial services company. I read this book to see what recommendations the authors were making about IT organization and use in larger firms, ostensibly as a roadmap for where to take my department. Many of the ideas within the book (change controls, division of labor, alignment with business goals) can be found elsewhere, but Baschab and Piot have pulled it all together created a reference guide for IT managers.

Based on my personal experience, many of their recommedations are on target. Most small- and many medium-sized organizations can benefit from their recommedations, although not without modification. It can only benefit an IT manager whose department is growing to be alert for instituting the ideas Baschab and Piot discuss, especially concerning controls, risk and organization.

One final note: it would have been interesting for the authors to discuss how small IT departments should implement their recommendations as they grow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Speaking from experience.......2002-11-23

As one of the early North American pioneers of the SAP technology in late 80's, I have assisted numerous clients in implementing complex projects in an effort to drive significant business value and the realization of business strategy. Making I/T Work does an excellent job of capturing the lessons learned over the past decade and shares a practical framework for how to get it done right. The book combines the value of change management, alignment, and dynamic planning in an easy-to-read story. It is a must read for any executive embarking on a similar journey.

5 out of 5 stars People Matter.......2002-11-07

Having worked with Passino since the early days of systems integration and the creation of the chief information officer role, I'm impressed to see this book. Most people think you unleash the power of technology through some grand combination of new hardware and a complex technology architecture.

Truth is, it's about people. How you work with them. How they work with the system. How you treat them.

Passino is a strategist who would agree with Michael Porter that information can help give you strategic advantage, but advantage only comes through people.

This book is a must read for any serious student or executive who has a lasting belief that technology can benefit enterprises of all kinds. It's a mandatory read for anyone responsible for a multimillion dollar systems investment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Every BusinessExecutive.......2002-10-30

Dennis and Jacque have distilled years of experience into a couple of very simple, but very useful frameworks that give every executive the context for making I/T more effective. In addition, they effectively share their experience and the results of their interviews to identify the usual problems and then how to deal with them. A simple, quick read that is extremely useful.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the Mark.......2002-10-24

Having spent 32 years in Information Technology, I find this book right on the mark. It is a must read for ALL CEOs and their I/T executive that may be contemplating a major change in their orgainzation or heading into to a project of any type or size. The authors use more than a half century of experience to describe how any major project, with or without an I/T component, will fail if proper management techniques and practices are not understood and followed. You may even think this book is about you and if you don't read it carefully and heed the advise, it may well be in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Focus on what matters.......2002-10-23

Making I/T Work outlines an effective methodology for planning and executing technology initiatives. One of the nice things about the book is how it alternates between narrative and lesson, one reinforcing the other. And this is done in a style that is knowledgeable and confident without being preachy or pedantic.

However, Severance and Passino have written a book that goes beyond IT implementation in its message to executives. Based on solid research and practical experience, Severance and Passino have provided a framework for bringing an organization together focusing on a common goal and executing according to a plan. Some would label this 'change management'. I would call it a platform for competitive advantage on a sustained basis. As the authors point out, knowing what to do really isn't all that difficult. Where the majority of companies have trouble is in execution. Great book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good, clear read.......2004-04-13

A good primer, clearly defined concepts and a writing style that cuts thru the jargon right to the point. Others have expounded the overall virtues of the book, I'll only echo the earlier review praising Chapter 2's definitions.

If you are an executive, senior manager, or just an IT professional looking for the "no BS" answer, and need a clear, concise overview of this sometimes complicated subject so you can make informed decisions on utilizing (or recommending) web services in your business, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Executive guide is right........2004-03-06

There is not enough detail here to make this book worth the money. Don't waist your time, there are many other books here that will fill in the details, this is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Make Business Sense of Your Web Initiatives.......2003-08-11

Web-based initiatives can be as simple or complex as looking at the night sky. The technology choices from programming languages to servers to networks to security can be overwhelming. Add to the mix the types of Internet-based business systems desired and demanded by customers along with the ability to implement them and you can find a state of confusion and uncertainty.

Eric and Mark do a superb job of helping executives understand how to take realistic steps to solve the technology conundrum and how best to approach Web-based initiatives that will bring the greatest value to achieving business goals. Without such a book, this journey can be daunting.

The thought leadership presented in the book takes the reader from the application of innovative uses of current technologies to the leading edge of future applications and architectures; all compartmentalized into four phases of adoption.

A great dissertation that is ahead of the pack in toning down the hype of Web Services while presenting a realistic view of the tremendous value that can be achieved.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone venturing into Web Services!.......2003-05-21

Given the wide spread industry hype surrounding Web Services, and the appearance that every software vendor has their own definition and perspective on what really constitutes a Web Service, what do you get - A whole heap of confusion!!

In tackling this confusion "Executive's Guide to Web Services," does a great job of explaining what Web Services are, and separating the business realities from the overblown hype. As such this book is recommended reading for anyone who is looking for a foundation upon which to really understand this emerging subject space.

In this book Marks and Werrell discuss:

- What differentiates Web Services from previous IT trends
- The concepts and standards that make Web Services possible
- The rational for using Web Services to increase organizational flexibility and agility
- Current and future business scenarios for reducing costs and increasing revenues
- How and where to begin using Web Services (as well as where not!)
- Predominant software vendors in the Web Services space, and their market positions

Overall the book avoids technical discussions, favoring a business centric perspective, from which strategic and tactical business considerations are examined. If you are looking for a guide on how to code your first Web Services program, this is not the book for you, this topics is left to the numerous implementation books already out there.

In this book you will find a solid Web Services foundation that will arm you with a good perspective on what Web Services are, as well as where and when to use them today. You will also gain the knowledge and understanding necessary to discern Web Services reality from hype - do not underestimate how valuable this knowledge is for early forays into implementation of Web Services!

5 out of 5 stars Great job explaining Web Services.......2003-05-06

"Executive's Guide to Web Services" starts out by providing real world examples of how and where Web services are being used today (e.g. Dunn & Bradstreet, Dell etc). These examples are used as a backdrop from which Web services concepts are introduced. Chapter 2, "Standards, Concepts and Terminology" is without doubt the most readable and comprehensive Web services primer that I've yet to find - it's worth buying the book for this chapter alone!

CONTENT:
Using chapter 2 as a foundation, later chapters further explore what Web services are, and what they can (and can't) do for businesses. Key topics covered include:
o Web Service Adoption - Looks at the hype surrounding Web services and outlines what's really achievable today. Also, details what the authors refer to as the "Web services Adoption Lifecycle," which maps the likely adoption and business usage of Web services over the next 3-5 years.
o Where to Begin - A step by step analysis of how, where, and when to use Web services for your business.
o Strategic/Vertical Market Implications - The medium to long terms strategic implications of Web services adoption.
o Architecting for Competitive Advantage - A conceptual discussion of how Web services can be used to create a more agile and flexible infrastructure, which is more adaptive to the fluidity of today's market dynamics.

CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, "Executive's Guide to Web Services" does a great job of explaining what Web services are, where and when to use them, and how they can be used to improve internal and inter-company operating efficiencies. The book covers each topic comprehensively, and does a good job of explaining complex concepts in a plain, easy to understand language.
Whether you are only just beginning to look into Web services, or you want to gain additional insights into how your business should look to use Web services, "Executive's Guide to Web Services" will be a good choice.

Good Choice - Highly Recommended.

      Book Description

Plain language, clear explanations, and a focus on practical business applications.

A recent A. T. Kearny study found that information technology is the number-one item on the agendas of a majority of CEOs and boards of directors. However, while senior managers are spending more time keeping abreast of developments in IT, many remain uncomfortable making decisions concerning technology issues that they don't entirely grasp.

Executive's Guide to Information Technology presents a comprehensive, nontechnical model for understanding the IT environment. Focused on the issues that are most important to upper-level managers, this book supplies the big-picture perspective needed to understand IT as a whole, while explaining how various components work together to support business functions. Without getting bogged down in details, it provides clear, comprehensible overviews of:
      * Networking and platform technologies
      * Software infrastructurE
      * Information management systems
      * Enabling technologies
      * Applications
      * Middleware, application servers, and system management technologies

The future belongs to organizations with the knowledge and confidence to exploit their IT resources wisely and use them aggressively. Executive's Guide to Information Technology gives business leaders the tools they need to do both.

In a business environment increasingly driven by information technology, it is essential for top-level executives to keep abreast of the latest developments in IT. They must understand how information systems can help achieve business goals and be able to use this understanding to make critical business decisions. Unfortunately, many senior-level executives find themselves at the mercy of technicians who have little grasp of business issues, focus on details rather than broader functions, and speak an arcane and mystifying language. There is a clear need for an intermediary to help executives decipher technological language, seek and get the answers that are most important from a business perspective, and develop better working relationships with IT personnel.

Executive's Guide to Information Technology provides a "Rosetta stone" that makes sense of a seemingly chaotic cluster of components-a coherent, trustworthy frame of reference that lays the foundation for more effective working relationships among business executives and technology managers. This book helps executives ask better questions about IT issues and better understand the answers they receive. Using integrated models that illustrate how information technologies form an infrastructure that supports practical business uses of information, it keeps the discussion focused on matters of direct concern to executives. Understanding these models develops a stronger grasp of the evolving role IT plays within organizations and establishes a comfort zone within which managers can develop a keener comprehension of component technologies and the strategic and tactical business decisions that surround them.

Whether it is read from cover to cover or consulted as a quick reference, Executive's Guide to Information Technology is an indispensable tool for CEOs, board members, COOs, CFOs, controllers, treasurers, and other business professionals who need to establish firm control of the governance, direction, and management of two of their most valuable assets: information and the technologies that support it.

      2 out of 5 stars Terrible diagrams.......2001-11-13

They say one picture is worth a thousand words. Well, the diagrams in this book are SO bad that they actually have a substractive effect on one's understanding. This book will be helpful to you as long as you have the ability to visualize on your own what he writes about.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Executive Guide To Understanding The IT Inf.......2001-06-07

Since the day IT became central to our lives, I have been grooping in the dark. I have gone into meetingS feeling totally at a lost on what the IT guys are talking about. No one, even the so called IT experts in my circle managed to give me an overview of what all these is about. I even managed to set up an IT training centre without understanding the fundamentals of the IT infrastructure - hoping I will learn on the job. I did but the learning was very disjointed. Then one day I saw this book by chance in a bookshop. There were only 2 copies. I bought it. Came back and read it into the wee hours of the morning. I went back the next day and bought the other copy as well for my wife. I wouldn't share my copy even with her. IT IS AN EYE OPENER. READ IT FROM COVER TO COVER. YOU WILL WALK INTO THE NEW ECONOMY, INTO THE CONNECTED WORLD A CHANGED PERSON. JAMES COX - WELL DONE & THANK YOU.YOU HAVE DONE ME REAL SERVICE.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and Clear.......1999-11-09

This is a superb book. It demystifies IT and clearly explains the differences between platform technologies (hardware/software), networks, and information management systems. I've heard people use these terms for years, and never fully understood until I read this book what makes each component of the IT infrastructure unique, and how they all work together. Executive's Guide to Information Technology is well worth the money, and I highly recommend it.
