Best reference book for Linux.......2007-01-15

This is the second copy of this book that I have. It is true that in the latest distributions of Linux (Suse 10, Fedora 6 or Ubuntu 6.+) you do not need to enter almost any command via the terminal, but there are two main reasons to learn to use the terminal line:
1. you want to become a power user and customize your linux distro, or
2. as an open source system, you are likely to broke something trying to install the latest applications, as Beryl for example, and you broke the graphical server.
In both cases, this book is a must have.
You can have access the same (or more) information via the 'man' command, but is useful to have some writen examples on how to use some commands. This book is very well organized and the size is really 'pocket'. It is a little outdated (2004) and oriented to Fedora (I'm an Ubuntu user), but useful anyway.

If you own one reference book for Linux, this should be it........2007-01-06

I am a linux newbie, though I have an extensive computer background in other operating systems, and I wanted a comprehensive, yet brief reference book for Linux. This is indespensible! I have other detailed, how-to Linux books, but this is the one I continue to use on a regular basis. THe book is arranged in a very logical way, and the table of contents in conjunction with the index allows me to quickly find the command I need. Essentially all Linux commands are included, and for a given command, the most commonly used options are explained.

If I need more detail, and I infrequently do, I can go to those other books, or most likely I just use Linux available documentation (command help, man pages, etc.)

Alot of information for just a few bucks -- again, indispensible!

'Linux iptables Pocket Reference' is an important and sorely needed reference to iptables, the interface to the Linux packetfilter used by System Admins to create firewalls, NAT routers, transparent proxies, and other 'magical' network devices. While not a tutorial, it offers good advice for those with a grasp of basic networking concepts, and a good notion of what a firewall is and what it is used for, in a dense and concise format. Sufficiently detailed information about the protocols involved obviate the need to keep additional references at hand, and make the work relatively self-contained. This should not be the first book you read about firewalls or tcp/ip, but if you are a networking professional, a technically oriented user, or just interested in creating special purpose network devices, this book belongs in your library. Those familiar with iptables will especially appreciate the lucid description of packet flow through the tables and chains, and the supporting diagrams ... they alone are worth the price of purchase.

If you have need for a book on the topic, you will not be disappointed with this one.

This book is written for linux/unix sysadmins, not programmers. The topic of iptables is intimately related to guarding a network against intruders. A sysadmin task. Plus, the compact, pocketbook size lends itself to a common scenario.

You're a harried sysadmin in the machine room of your company, surrounded by racks of computers and cabling. Equipment everywhere and little room for you to prop up a regular sized text on intrusion detection. Quite possibly, the master console is some cheezy old monitor that you got stuck with. Or even worse, it is just a terminal. If the latter, it's really awkward to do a man on iptables and also run it, especially if you're in real time mode against an active intruder. In other words, what this book is ideal for.

This little book is great. I've only had it for about a week. I needed to match some text today with a pattern that was a little bit more involved than my usual simple needs. I flipped through a few pages and found some examples that quickly helped me derive the search pattern I needed in a few minutes.

I have the full "sed & awk" second edition book, but I went to the pocket reference instead. I would not have been able to find what I needed in the larger book as quickly.

Some have complained about some of the pocket references lacking indexes. This one doesn't have one, but it's so easy to use that it doesn't need one. Just flip and few pages and you'll find what you need. As far as I'm concerned time is money. This little book has paid for itself in one weeks use.

Sed and awk are the mainstay for those of you who write shell scripts on unix/linux machines that manipulate text files. It is difficult to overstate the usefulness of these two programs.

So O'Reilly and Robbins decided to help you by providing this pocketbook reference that encapsulates the online help for the programs. The book is aimed at someone who programs, but still prefers a traditional hardcopy reference as an aid to human memory. It assumes that you basically already know how to use the programs, but just need some reminder as to the exact syntax and all the possible options.

A super fast lightweight reference.......2000-12-20

I use this pocket reference more then any other reference for sed and awk. This is mostly a syntax guide for folks who already know sed and awk. If you don't know sed and awk, get the Ellen Quigleys 'Unix Shells'(for beginners) followed by O'Reillies 'Sed and Awk' reference. (Big book.) I tend to forget exactly how to do something, so I will just quickly look at my bookmarked pocket reference, and flip quickly to an example of syntax to get that bash code going correctly. If your desk has as many papers and books on it as mine, this is nice for freeing up some elbow room, while keeping the big books on the bookshelf most of the time.

I bought this "book" because I am writing a program that deals extensively with strings and text (natural language parsing). I was having some difficulty mastering sed, and understanding how it works. For example, "s/[^A-Za-z]//" was not working (to remove non alpha chars). After five pages in this little gem, I knew what I needed. A trailing "g".

The book is rich with examples, explanations, and really just cuts straight to the chase.

This is not a book for the casual user. It is, after all, a reference, not a tutorial. Unix users (and administrators) who already have a basic grasp of regular expressions and just what sed and awk are (and grep/egrep too) will find this most rewarding.

Complete for the reluctant or casual sys admin.......2005-05-03

I'm a programmer and support analyst, but I work for a company with servers all over the world and no "in-house" sys admin at my location. So from time to time I get called upon to set things up, troubleshoot operating system problems, etc. This book always seems to have the answer. If you get this book along with another pocket book called "UNIX Shell Commands: Quick Reference" by QUE then you'll be pretty well set without lugging anything big around.

Ahem. I know this is only the "pocket" version of this book, but Essential System Administration Pocket Reference is the best system admin book I've seen in a long time. Now, I'm relatively new to Unix system admin, but I've knocked around the industry for over ten years now, so I know a thing or two about sysadmin work. Usually, what I look for in a reference guide is either something quick and simple or with miles and miles of depth. If I'm new to a system, or I only administer it as a backup or "once in a blue moon", the quick guides suit me well. In this case, that was precisely what I was looking for in a Unix system administration guide. Essential System Administration Pocket Reference provides this to a "T".
Without getting bogged down in lengthy descriptions or philosphical discussions of which tool to use when, this pocket reference lists the basic administration commands, beyond GREP (though it lists that, too!), with a short description of what it does. It's easier to read than the MAN file, usually gives me few examples, and I don't have to open a second terminal window to use it! Seriously, I really reccomend this guide to anyone new to Unix, including Linux, system administration. Or, like me, is getting back into it for the first time since, well, since the Dark Ages. It's a great guide or refresher and it literally does fit in your pocket!

This book contains a lot of very useful information for every UNIX admin on very little space. When I bought this book, I thought that I would only use it as an aide-mémoire but a learned a lot of new things while reading this booklet.

The organization of this book into several topics that comprise a certain area of system administration like e.g. "Networking" help, if you want to gain a good overview of the commands, configuration files and specialties (e.g. device files) for this area.

A booklet of this size can of course not replace all the books and UNIX man pages that dig very deeply into each of the subjects mentioned in this book. As an overview book this was not the intention of the author anyway. This is meant as an overview book only that mentions the important details. You will not find many examples in this book (if any). This book is not meant for beginners or for learning the subject of UNIX system administration. If you want to learn this I recommend the big edition of this book as a good starting point.

I especially liked the following about this book:
- The different options for the UNIX derivates (Red Had Linux 8.0, Suse 8.1, Solaris 8 and 9, Free BSD 4.7, AIX 5 and HP-UX 11) can be found next to each other, this is really helpful if you work with more than one version of UNIX at a time
- Not only the commands the but configuration files and the device files on the platforms are covered
- The coverage of commands is surprisingly big (e.g. I did not expect DHCP configuration instructions in the book)

"Essential system admin pocket reference" covers some of the GNU commands. Unfortunately I am missing coverage for the following commands that are very helpful in problem analysis:
- lsof (list open files)
- truss / strace / trace (trace system calls)
- top (CPU and System Monitor)

The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference has a remarkably tight focus. It's about making Oracle database management systems run optimally under various Unix operating systems, including HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and IBM AIX (there's also some specialized coverage of IRIX and DEC Unix). Author Donald Burleson assumes readers know how to get around the Unix command shell, and that they're quite familiar with Oracle database administration. To put it simply, to get the most out of this book, you should already know what you want to do, and need only to be told concisely how to do it. This book is ideal for people moving from Oracle administration under Windows to the same job under Unix.

As a byproduct of its careful focus, the book is tiny. It almost fits in a shirt pocket, and is about as thick as a standard pencil. A typical entry documents a single command (there are separate entries for different operating systems when commands differ), and includes a bit of text followed by the relevant command and a listing of typical output. Utility scripts with Oracle relevance are listed with minimal comments. This isn't traditional man-page-style Unix documentation, but rather advice on how to accomplish various Oracle goals inside Unix. Useful Tips and Tricks.......2005-06-29

This booklet contains a collection of shell script code snippets and other UNIX tips for the DBA. Not everything will be useful for everyone, but only the most experienced UNIX geek will fail to find one trick or the other that he did not know before. And what else is UNIX expertise if not knowledge about such little tricks?

I especially liked the sections about commands to collect performance statistics for the UNIX boxes your databases run on. You do not normally find these commands in general UNIX books (not even in the meatiest ones) and would have to turn to special UNIX admin books, which might be sort of an overkill for a mere DBA.

The book also introduces into some very basic UNIX concepts like piping commands and changing file permissions. This is superfluous as this booklet does by no means repalce a full-fledged UNIX introduction. But if you are a DBA who has already read his "UNIX for Beginners" or the like and who wants to delve a little bit deeper into HP-UX or AIX, than this book is for you.

Most useful for Oracle DBAs.......2005-05-09

This is a very helpful book which provides a basic overview of using Unix running Oracle. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that the author has spent lot of time providing only the most useful and salient Unix scripts for the Oracle DBA. You will not find any unnecessary or redundant information in this book. In fact, I highly recommend all Oracle DBAs to read this book and memorize all its ideas.

Here are some of the best tips:
1)Script to kill all Oracle processes.
2)Place a SQL * Plus script in a Unix Shell Wrapper
3)Ensure that only the Oracle user can run a Unix shell script
4)Execute a SQL*Plus Script on all the instances in the enterprise.
5)Automatically delete old trace and audit files
6)Copy TNSnames.ora to all the Unix servers in the enterprise
7)Detect when Oracle is not accepting connections and send alert

Good reference book for Unix newbies.......2004-07-28

This booklet is full of usefull Unix commands, most of them at the junior level and just a few more are complex. I used this book maybe 10 times since I bought it a couple of years ago, so I am not sure that I have utilizied my purchase well.

Still, I would recommend the book to any DBA who is new to Unix.

Good for the UNIX Novice.......2004-05-28

Decent reference - at least pointing out some interesting options and some things to watch out for at the OS level. As mentioned in other reviews - its HP-UX oriented with nearly as much focus on AIX, but lacks detail on Solaris (and Linux).
Fairly well written - but mainly pretty simple content. Just keeps you from looking up the syntax in some cases. If you are new to UNIX its probably worth the purchase. If you are an experienced UNIX professional - find it used to make it a worth-while purchase.

A valuable book for Oracle dbas who are new in unix.......2002-12-12

This is a book that should be in the pocket of all Oracle dbas
beginners in unix, and specially those fighting with several
flavors of unix.
If you are an experienced oracle dba working with Windows NT
or Open VMS and new in unix, these book can help you.
It's reading is easy ç, since the book contains the basics that an oracle dba need to know in order to begin working with unix as soon as possible.

A short reference that does away with all the hand-holding detail the Knoppix Pocket Reference is a great guide to how to do almost everything you want to do with Knoppix as well as resolve minor trouble issues. The items covered in this reference include the various startup codes that can be used when booting Knoppix, how to boot the different kernels, booting into different graphic modes, booting without hardware detection, disabling power management, disabling various hardware subsystems, implementing various kernel options, using options to make it run from memory or the hard drive instead of the CD, configuring persistent configuration information between sessions, imaging the hard drive, repairing the filesystem, repairing Windows systems, virus scanning and repair, and remastering Knoppix. When you just need to know how to do something and don't want to drag out the six hundred page book to try to find it you will find the Knoppix Pocket Reference a great investment.

Pocket references are small (this one is less than 100 pages), so they are not good introductory guides to the subject at hand. This one is no different. If you're simply playing with Knoppix in order to see what desktop Linux is all about, you can easily pass on this book. You'll get a bit more out of it if you're looking to run Knoppix a bit more regularly (by installing it on your hard drive or saving configurations between reboots). Still, Knoppix Hacks would probably be a better title to better understand those techniques. Where this book shines is when you decide to use Knoppix as a bootable OS to allow you to administer and repair systems that are no longer working correctly (both Linux *and* Windows). Since you don't have to have a bootable sector on your hard drive to use it, you can get Knoppix up and running from a CD and then use it to repair the underlying hard drive. If you have a virus or rootkit installed, a Knoppix boot will allow you to get a clean system up and running which can then check out the hard drive for repair. Knoppix Pocket Reference will help remind you of the steps you need to take to accomplish some of these tasks. You're only getting the core commands with very little fluff, so you can quickly hone in on the trouble spot.

This is the book I'd recommend as a follow-up purchase to Knoppix Hacks. If you decide to use Knoppix in the ways that the Hacks book reveals, Knoppix Pocket Guide will be the volume that you refer to until the commands are burned into your memory.

This reference is good if you are only looking for syntax or available options to a command you understand.

If you have questions about the way the commands work, or the concepts behind them (what is a list?) then you'll find that you keep going back to the larger books.

So I am currently in Ousterhout for most of my questions and then opening this infrequently to check syntax.

I think it could have had a more extensive index and I cannot see any order in the table of contents.

These pocket reference guides pack an amazing amount of information. In my opinion, this book (along with other pocket references) are better than some full sized books. One thing I like about this book is that it goes straight to the point. For example, I wanted to look up the after command. So, in a few seconds I find the description, and I immediately learn the syntax for this command. There is no long description or theory to read through, the bulk of what you need to know is right there. Anybody who is in to TCL/TK should get this book!

A different kind of animal.......2003-11-30

Tcl (Tool command language) scripting language.
TK (took Kit) graphic tool to help build graphic interface.
You will be surprised to know that you know a lot of the commands and concepts already.
The reason for different languages is to be more efficient in the purpose of the program. In my case this is used for writing code for phone switching systems. No one can remember all the commands; so it is wise to carry your pocket reference with you. For those that do not have the occasion to use Tcl/Tk the reference helps you stay culturally literate. And who know one day you may have the need and say "now where did I put that Pocket reference?"

If it's important to you to have a quick reference in paper form, then by all means this is the book for you. It's technically accurate. It is getting a bit out of date, but Tcl has an excellent track record for maintaining upward compatibility. You may miss out on new features, but you won't be led too far astray.

If, on the other hand, you're comfortable with browsing the manual on-line, then save your money. There's little in this book that isn't also in the on-line manuals that come with Tcl/Tk, and you can be certain that the on-line manual matches the Tcl/Tk release that you're using.

The Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference is a good basic guide to the Tcl syntax. The text is a simple straight-forward listing of the different Tcl terms, their functions and their signatures, alphabetized by category.

This book is so inferior to the available on-line documentation you shouldn't waste your money. The book is little more than an incomplete list of the available CVS commands with no helpful explainations.

A couple of years ago I started using CVS for large projects with lots of files. I bought this book back then, but have used it very little. Everything is in the UNIX man pages, and there is online documents.

Useful; worth the price if you don't like man pages.......2002-08-09

This pocket reference summarises the basics of CVS. It's enough to get you going, but I wouldn't rely on it for a major project. The explanation of how CVS works is short; the part I've found most useful is the handy table of CVS commands and options in the second half of the book.

However, there is extensive online documentation for CVS that goes into far greater depth than this book, is more up to date, and is free. Even though I've had the book, I've still needed to refer to this online documentation to learn the finer points of tags, branching, and other CVS features.

So it's really a matter of whether you want to pay to have some (but not all) useful information in a handy booklet. If that appeals to you, great, this isn't a bad book. But you can certainly live without it by using your computer as a reference tool.

Can't keep up with the O'Reilly standards.......2002-07-28

This book fails to be a pocket reference. The book's index is a joke and as a result your topic of interest is not listed or, and that is a major drawback for reference books, discussed somewhere else. And if you find your topic the information presented is often not sufficient to answer your question. Although I keep this book within arm reach on my desk, I always use the web for my CVS questions. My advice for people with basic CVS knowledge and the ability to use CVS from the command line: search the web and pick one of the many CVS related web sites as your starting point for more information on CVS. This books does not keep up with the O'Reilly standards and is therefor best ignored.

Online documentation is better........2002-07-08

It's an OK book if you have some knowledge of CVS already but as most people would use CVS in an networked environment the online documentation is actually better and up to date.

This is basically a small format pocket reference to five of the most common desktop distributions of Linux. The distributions covered are Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, SUSE, and Ubuntu. The author covers the basics of navigating the GNOME and KDE desktop environments and the applications that come with each of the distributions. Deviating from the normal layout of such texts it is organized by the type of application instead of by the Linux distribution. As a result if you want to work with the web browser you go to that section where the author discuses the web browsers Firefox and Konquerer. These are the two that are included because each of the distributions has either one or the other.

The section on how to add, remove, and update programs is particularly good as it discusses the various techniques including how to add a package that it not part of your distribution. Here the author not only discusses the various package managers included with the distribution but also how to go the long way around and work with rpms. This is not an extensive technical reference to any of the Linux distributions discussed but it is a good first resource for common questions and a good introduction to all of them. Linux Desktop Pocket Guide is recommended for the average Linux user and a must have guide for others who need to know the differences between various distribution.

The Linux Desktop Pocket Guide is a valuable resource for new users to the Linux world. Almost everyone has heard of Linux and recognizes it as the "next big thing". However, many people are taken aback at the shear number of Linux distributions. The advantage of Windows is that there is only one company to go to and that provides some simplicity. With Linux, there is no one-stop shopping, and each distribution has different strengths and weaknesses. This book helps the novice user to navigate the most popular distributions to decide which will work best for them.

The book compares Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, SUSE, and Ubuntu with a focus on their desktop environments. This book has some value for system administrators, particularly new ones, but will make the biggest impact to the casual home-user to the beginner power-user.

It covers a wide range of desktop issues including Gnome/KDE support, application support, updating the OS, configuration for hardware support, and probably most usefully laptop support. Laptops have traditionally been less than friendly with laptops and this book helps navigate the big issues making Linux a viable option for laptops.

It is a little thick as pocket guides go but that's more of a factor of the breadth of material covered. Like many of the O'Reilly books, it is concise and easy-to-read. It is accessible to the unsophisticated user and presents information in manageable chunks. For those looking to get a handle on Linux and making it work for them, this book is a great resource.

WHAT'S IN YOUR POCKET?.......2006-02-26

Are you using one or more of the following Linux distributions: Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, Novell SUSE, and the desk-top-focused Debian derivative Ubuntu? If you are, then this book is for you! Author David Brickner, has written an outstanding mini guide to help you get the most out of your Linux experience.

Brickner, begins with a valuable introduction to the Linux distributions. Then, he devotes a whole chapter to logging in. The author continues by looking GNOME. In addition, he discusses the KDI desktop. The author also presents at least two application programs for each program type. Then, the author shows you the basics of using each of the preferred package managers of each distribution. Next, he discusses how to configure some types of hardware with regards to Linux. Finally, he presents you with a grounding in the basics of what is needed and how the pieces fit together.

After reading this excellent book, you'll learn all about the graphical programs and desktop environments that run on top of Linux. This book doesn't shy away from difficult topics in Linux; instead, it jumps right in and tells you what you need to know about laptop power management, configuring your graphics card, and setting up sound and networking.

I recently received a review copy of Linux Desktop Pocket Guide by David Brickner. This is one of those books that you may like or hate depending on what you're looking for...

Since this is a "pocket guide", I don't expect there to be a lot of conversational writing and screen prints. Normally you get core reference material that you can find and use quickly. The Linux Desktop Pocket Guide seems to be somewhat of a departure from that pattern. There's still no screen prints, which is fine. But I can't tell what level of reader would benefit most from this book. The distribution chapter has a nice short comparison between a number of distro choices, but seems to be a bit light in order for newbies to make decisions (or experts to learn anything new). GNOME and KDE are quick references to the basic desktop tool, and it will help the new Linux user to learn the basic keystrokes and components. The Applications chapter is a high-level sweep through some of the basic choices of software for things like media manipulation and office productivity software. Add/Remove finally starts to show the pattern of other pocket guides, by recapping the command line choices possible for installing programs on the different distros. Configuration and Laptops can help the reader get things like mice and sound cards running, but if you run into problems, there's not a lot of additional troubleshooting stuff here. Finally, the Running Commands appendix is just a short two or three page chapter on how the command line works.

In my opinion, I'd try and look at this book first before buying it. I'm just not sure if there's a single audience that this would appeal to without exception...
