good seller, definitely recommend.......2005-09-04
Shipping is prompt, and the item is in good condition as described.
Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read.......2005-08-17
This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.
I give this book a full 5 stars.
Not the best, but not too shabby.......2005-03-19
MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick.
great book for a beginner.......2004-12-11
This is an excellent book for a beginner--a beginner to MFC. It teaches you the basics( classes, pointer, ....) if you happen to have forgot them and it teaches you an undestanding of HOW MCF works and HOW to use it.
Most books seem to teach you how to use it, leaving how it works for the unknown, but this book does both. The layout of the book is excellent. 1/2 a page is code and the other 1/2 explains the code, very useful so you do not have to switch pages trying to see what they are talking about.
I really do not have anything to negatively say about this book. I am happy that I found a book that teaches the how and why. Great book for the beginner, and probably a decent book for the intermediate.
Note: It would be a good help, almost a must to have some understanding of function, arrary, memory, containers, classes work before you get this book.
programmingglitch.......2004-04-26
If you want to do some professional programming this book is almost a waste. It is very basic. VERY BASIC. Doesnt answer any of the basic questions. Okay. With MFC and SDI and MDI and all the supposedly cool and hyper smart stuff we at least hope to go beyond writing codes in SDI and MDI for saying "Hello World", and typing three stings as a document file. If that is supposed to be smartness....god save the world. No Help. With anything. Wont help you write a windows application. Unless ofcourse, you are the hello world kid. And get an ego boost once your hello world works!

Caveat Emptor;
Even though Amazon states the cd with the files is included - it is not, and the Publisher CMP books wants to charge $5 for the cd and $5 to ship it! What a rip-off!
Yeah Swank does it again.......2000-07-21
This is the worst example of a programming book I have ever purchased. The worst insult was the fact that even though on the cover it says using ActiveX. A whopping four pages are dedicated to ActiveX which is just screen shots of what the MS IDE looks like and an explanation blatantly proclaiming that if the reader wants to learn ActiveX then he or she needs to buy another book. Used car salesman and con artist selling an inferior product use this type of tactic (the Bait and switch). Please heed my warning save your money. Yeah John Swank does it again hopefully he will not do it to you.
Swanke does it Again!.......2000-06-14
I purchased his other two books and this one fill sout my library. I love his examples--whenever I have something to do I try his books first
Finally a COM Book I Can Understand.......2000-06-14
This book has helped me tremendously. The style of the book is exactly what I needed. It seems like most of the other books Ive bought and "borrowed" made COM seem like some kind of mystical thing, but this book just tells it like it is. I agree with the last reviewer that the first few examples have a repeatd warning in them about calling an init function, but the rest of the examples were all new and just what I needed.
Good, concise intro, but the rest is fluff.......2000-06-13
The first 100 pages provides a good concise overview of COM programming. It is well written and to the point. However, the remaining section (250 pages) of examples was disappointing. The examples were shells only and had only a summary explanation of each. The same content was copied over and over in all the examples. For example, the "How to register the DLL" explaination, which took almost a page, was copied verbatim in the other examples. Instead of building on a concept, it was simply repeated. 90% of the examples were MFC generated code. It seemed to be more an attempt to fatten up the book rather than to provide content. In short, I think one would be better off with another book that can provide more in-depth examples that one can learn from. Not just the same MFC code again and again.

Visual C++ 6 Unleashed
ASIN: 0672315572 |
Book Description
Using MFC 6 Unleashed, the reader will learn to apply the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) to resolve a number of common and not-so-common programming issues. The design of the book makes it easy for readers to quickly find the topics they are interested in, and its advanced level coverage provides for a complete understanding of MFC. Within each topic, readers will be provided with detailed background information, including class hierarchies, as well as example code that can be applied to their own applications. Topic coverage will include, but is not limited to: Part I: MFC Architecture; Part II: Dialogs, Messages, and controls/notifications; Part III: Documents, Views, and Applications; Part IV: MFC and COM Programming; Part V: MFC Database Programming; Part VI: MFC Utility Classes; Part VII: MFC and the Web; Part VIII: MFC and Graphics Programming; Part IX: Advanced MFC (Tips and Tricks).
Customer Reviews:
Beginners Beware!.......2003-06-26
If you are new to MFC, like I was, stay away from this book. It is completely useless for a beginner since I doesnt really cover the basics. Reading it will just confuse you. A few of the chapters can be helpful once you become an expert, but it's not worth the money.
So close yet so far.......2002-04-29
I couldn't wait to get this book because it covered quite a bit.
The selling points for me were the chapters on Multimedia (including OpenGL, and DirectX) with MFC, and Scripting an MFC Application. The OpenGL chapter was effective because it worked and I saw all the steps. I never tried the DirectX because reading it seemed like it took for ever to get down to the point. To me, good programming books take a code first, explain later approach (as long as they remember to explain) or an explain as you code approach, but never explain everything then code.
As it turns out, this book touches on quite a bit of key topics in MFC programming. However, some times it doesnt take you to the point of having practical knowledge. For example, the section on building an ActiveX control with MFC never explains how to implement the events your control will fire -- a point that I was most interested in. Perhaps the gravest shortcoming was the sections on Active Documents. Another key feature of MFC programming (very interesting) that didn't get proper treatment. Maybe it's just me, but even though it gave a brief explaination of the many different parts that go into Active Documents, it didn't put it all together in an eye opening way. To it's credit, the book does provide an example of building an Active Document server, and it reveals something very important -- there is little difference from the programmers perspective in handling applications with and without active document support. The only problem I have with the example is that it doesn't point out where a whole bunch of the pieces it just talked about (i.e., COleDocIPFrameWnd, COleServerItem, etc.) fit in, nor how we should use them.
This book has potential, but it wastes a bunch of space by having definitions of documented functions, and MFC source code, and function prototypes in it.
I'd save my 50 bucks for something else if you're thinking of getting this book.
Another disgruntled Canadian.......2001-12-21
I wish I'd read these reviews before buying this book! It is dreadful, I've tried 3 times to get something out of it and each time just shake my head in disbelief and walk away from it. Chapter 1 just throws a whole bunch of stuff at you, seems to me that unless you already know it you aren't going to be able to follow it. Very usefull. Chapter 2 starts off like a tutorial - you think you are about to create a simple dialog application. Suddenly it leaves you hanging, shows you a picture of the finished dialog, goes on to describe all possible controls that you might want to add to the dialog, but not how to add them! So I went to the source code on the accompanying CD - source for this chapter won't compile as it references files that are not there. Within the chapter 2 directory is an OpenGL program that isn't mentioned in the text at all. I'm interested in OpenGL so compiled it. It works, but what is it supposed to do? Where is the data for it?
I've been programming in the scientif and engineering fields for 15 years. I consider myself pretty intelligent and a whiz programmer. I found this book completely useless. If I hadn't damaged the cover I'be demanding my money back.
I think someone just wanted to make some money with a catchy title and a lot of unrelated articles written by different people. I feel ripped off.
no details, no examples, no tutorials.......2001-11-29
This book doesn't go into any detail at all and offers no examples of the subject they are talking about. Can be used as a reference only. Sure it covers everything that exists in MFC World, but it covers it all so briefly and in such little detail that it's not much use. Other than giving me a very heavy, blunt object to beat burglars to death with I can't see it being of much value.
A terrible book.......2001-11-26
They should have named this "1300 pages of (...) Unleashed". There are very few sections in this book that give even a basic example of how to create or implement the things you are reading about. It seems like they cut and pasted hundreds of small articles together and called it a book. There is no flow to the book, making it impossible to read. Half of this book is just a bunch of useless definitions. I bought this because it claims to cover an impressive number of topics, but that coverage is some of the worst I've ever seen. A complete waste of money.

Book Description
Supercharge your MFC development of enhanced Windows User Interface (UI) controls with pseudo-multiple inheritance. Multiple Inheritance is a powerful technique familiar to C++ programmers, but has limited usage in MFC and, sometimes with unexpected results. Pseudo-multiple inheritance is achieved through aggregate subclassing. Because message processing is the core of Windows programs, Galbraith uses a sophisticated, yet generic, message handler that can be used with any window ( eliminating the need for complicated MFC message maps. This subclassing method works directly with MFC objects. If MFC should do the work, it lets the message pass through; if you want your own class extensions to do the work, then the C++ wrappers handle the messages themselves. Galbraith shows you how these methods of pseudo-multiple inheritance make it easier to customize the performance and appearance of Windows controls, including: * A Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) API that can be used to extend the MFC CBitmap class* A Background class to display different backgrounds depending on whether the window has focus/activation or loses focus/activation. * A Caption class that provides sophisticated control over customized caption displays The CD-ROM contains all programming code, example programs that demonstrate the functionality of each class extension, and an API and Class Reference providing cross-references to all the code. Author Bio: Jeffery Scott Galbraith is a senior software developer for IDX Systems Inc, expert in C++, Visual C++, and MFC. He is an experienced teacher and programming consultant, currently engaged in web technology solutions for the Internet.

Dictionary.......2001-08-09
This book reminds me of a graduate professor who is knowledageable but doesn't know how to teach. He walks in a classroom, puts a bunch of codes on an overhead projector and leaves.
Yes, it's for advanced readers but also for those who like to read a dictionary.
Excellent toolkit.......1999-11-08
I consider myself to be an advanced MFC programmer. This book is exactly what I was looking for to help me with a project I'm currently working on. It's not for the neophyte MFC programmer.
Very little meat.......1999-08-13
I was looking forward to reading this book, but ended up being disappointed. The author has taken some interesting ideas (and code) from Paul DiLascia's work in MSJ and added one useful extension (message reflection.)
There are hundreds of pages of boilerplate code, and the previous reviewer's comments about whitespace and font size are accurate. (For example, there are 78 straight pages, each of which displays listings of 4 methods whose entire body consists of "return FALSE;"!)
In general, I think the book's content, which is admittedly too long and complex for a magazine article, would have made for a good chapter in a book which compiled programming ideas from different authors (similar to Visual C++ Master Class).
It's a stinker.......1999-08-06
Well, in the quote given in the front page of the book it tell exactly where the author stands in society. It if from Willian Ward about teachers - and this author is below the mediocre level.
The book itself rates decently if it weighed in at half the pages and price. Instead, it's oversized fonts and constant complete listing of every line of code makes this book little more meaty that your typical trashy romance novel. It gets worse as the author uses every trick in the book to extend the whitespace of the code - even to the point of multiple returns after comments.
The book is best used as a doorstop.
One of the best MFC book so far!.......1999-06-26
I found this is a very clear and very useful book for professionals. Cannot recommend for beginners. Information is practical and reusable.

Nice intrduction to MFC.......2004-10-11
It does a good job of introducing MFC with good but not many examples. If you know C++ programming and have experience with another GUI framework, this book will serve you very well to understand MFC quickly.
Title suggests more than contents of book.......2003-04-12
The one thing that you're not going to do at the end of this book is actually understanding MFC. It will give you a crash course in how to write an MFC program, and that's where it stops. Deeper understanding of how and why things work the way they work is not explained.
Most of the book is based on one example, so if you skip a chapter you're doomed because your sample project isn't up to date. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.
Spoty at best.......2001-06-21
I am a CS student looking to do some GUI programing. The first 1/4 of the book is just basic brush up on simple c++ classes, strings, declaring variables, pointers, etc. Nice little refresher. Then it gets into pop up windows which was informative but very limited . Then the remander of the book is focused around one program that he wrote as an example but his descriptions are so vague it is dificult to apply it to your own program. The things done in the book can just as easily be done by following the MFC app wizard in visualc++ and then reading the MSDN library, save your money, or buy my copy used =)

The Best there is.......1999-03-16
Reading previous reviews, there's not much left for me to add. Except that I have a library of over 200 programming books, and this one is still my favorite one!
Outstanding Book for Beginning Windows Programmers.......1998-12-14
I have read quite a few programming books and this one is certainly among the best. If you know C++, but don't know much about Windows programming, this is the book to buy. The writing is clear, the examples are useful, and the explanations are helpful.
Excellent book for beginners and intermediate programmers!.......1998-12-14
I can't say enough good things about this book. All examples are very clear and the explainations are nothing short of wonderful.
Another thing I like is that the applications are built from scratch, not using the Visual C++ app wizard. This is a much better way for the beginner to learn MFC.
This book is a must have...
This is the "Petzold" of MFC.......1998-11-26
This is an excellent MFC beginner's book, and I still use it as a reference after 3 years of WIN32 MFC programming. Prosise writes clearly and he and/or his editors are good at organizing a book and creating a useful index. Furthermore, Prosise' code appears to all have been compiled and tested, unlike most of the book garbage out there.
This is a book for programmers seriously interested in learning to program for Windows 95/98 in MFC, not for people who don't even know how to run a C++ compiler or think programmers do any real work with the cheesy VC++ "wizards".
I would say that this is a "must have" MFC book for new MFC programmers, except that it is getting out of date. It doesn't have beans for coverage of the newer WIN32 common controls, anything on database programming (DAO/ADO), and basically doesn't cover MFC 4.2. For new purchasers, I would wait for the next edition, which was supposed to be out in the spring of 1998, (I have had it on back order for months). Many updates are greatly needed to cover programming for Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0. In particular, Document/View GUI applications of any serious complexity frequently involve a database, so the lack of any coverage of DAO is pretty limiting.
best book on mfc.......1998-11-22
i have seen a lot of books on this subject all of them begin with the appwizard tool as an instructor i cant use the appwizard as a teaching tool so i had a problem with that kind of book as i saw this book its was axactly what i was looking for. best for learning MFC and teaching it and in one word - Perfect

Pretty good book, but not very good organized........1998-08-25
The author explains everything pretty good, but there are two things that bother me: 1. The examples are too complex. He doesn't tell me HOW to actually create a button, he just gives me this example where he creates 20 different types of buttons. 2. The books' organisation is not very good. Some things that are mentioned in Chapter 3 should better be put in the appendix, sometimes the author just gives you too much. Before he even teaches you how to create a button, you already know how to make a print preview and how to capture the mouse.
Very well written, the only book to treat of palettes in MFC.......1998-07-17
I spent 2 hours in a technical bookstore looking for a book on MFC that discussed palette control. This was the only one that did and it even included an example. Even though there are two errors in the code which prevents the palette example to work correctly in 256 colors mode, the author still has the merit of being the only one to have the courage to explore that difficult subject.
Most difficult areas of Microsoft Foundation Classes are equally well explored. The whole book has an excellent educational progress structure which makes it easy to follow. The CD contains clear examples for each chapter.
In my opinion, a must have if you work with MFCs.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book for learning MFC........1998-04-09
I am a C programmer with little knowledge on C++. Previous to reading the book, I know nothing about Windows API, not alone MFC. After spending about 6 hrs to read through the first 7 chapters, I can already write applications with some dialogs controls and feel confortable enough to look up information in help files to learn other MFC objects. This is all because of the effective outline and clear explanations presented by the book. In conclusion, this book is ideal for people with programming background to learn Windows API and MFC.
Very good, takes you from from WIN32 API to MFC.......1997-09-27
This book provides an introduction to programming the windows api and then jumps into MFC. It has a quick pace and is a good read.
