Internet Routing Architectures (2nd Edition)
Sam Halabi Manufacturer: Cisco Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 157870233X |
Amazon.com
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) does exactly what its name implies--it routes traffic efficiently from its origin on one network to its destination on another. Most typically, it's the protocol that provides a private network with Internet connectivity. Internet Routing Architectures is an authoritative text on BGP in theory and practice, covering everything from good design of BGP-based internetworks to actual implementation of those internetworks on Cisco Systems routers. This second edition includes more information than its predecessor on BGP-4; other improvements are updates rather than major additions or revisions. You will appreciate having this book on hand if your job has to do with optimizing traffic under BGP, or if you're preparing for one of the Cisco certification exams.Sam Halabi--a respected authority on Cisco routers--discusses addressing schemes and the ways in which routing protocols operate within those schemes. The general information serves mainly to set the stage for BGP, which Halabi explains lucidly in theory before getting into design issues and, finally, implementation via router configuration. The book presents practical situations ("Multihoming to a Single Provider," for example, which is subsequently broken down into sub-scenarios about how the multiple connections are used) and steps through the design decisions associated with them. It's also big on diagrams and uses one on nearly every other page to drive home points. The result: this book earns its cover price as a tutorial and as a reference. --David Wall
Topics covered: Means of connecting one network to another, especially by means of Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4) on Cisco Systems routers. There's coverage of addressing and routing-protocol generalities, as well as of BGP tuning for routing inside and outside autonomous systems. Design decisions are a big part of this book's scope.
Book Description
The industry's leading resource for Internet routing solutions and scenarios
Internet Routing Architectures, Second Edition, explores the ins and outs of interdomain routing network designs with emphasis on BGP-4 (Border Gateway Protocol Version 4)--the de facto interdomain routing protocol.

Cisco IOS Cookbook (Cookbooks (O'Reilly))
Kevin Dooley , and Ian Brown Manufacturer: O'Reilly Media, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0596527225 |
Book Description
Never has something cried out for a cookbook quite as much as Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS). IOS is powerful and flexible, but also confusing and daunting. Most tasks can be accomplished in several different ways. And you don't want to spend precious time figuring out which way is best when you're trying to solve a problem quickly. That's what this cookbook is for. Fortunately, most router configuration tasks can be broken down into several more or less independent steps: you configure an interface, you configure a routing protocol, you set up backup links, you implement packet filters and other access control mechanisms. What you really need is a set of recipes that show you how to perform the most common tasks, so you can quickly come up with a good configuration for your site. And you need to know that these solutions work: you don't want to find yourself implementing a backup link at 2 A.M. because your main link is down and the backup link you set up when you installed the router wasn't quite right.
Thoroughly revised and expanded, Cisco IOS Cookbook, 2nd Edition, adds sections on MPLS, Security, IPv6, and IP Mobility, and presents solutions to the most common configuration problems, including:
If you work with Cisco routers, you need a book like this to help you solve problems quickly and effectively. Even if you're experienced, the solutions and extensive explanations will give you new ideas and insights into router configuration. And if you're not experienced--if you've just been given responsibility for managing a network with Cisco routers--this book could be a job-saver.

Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development)
Jeff Doyle Manufacturer: Cisco Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Textbook Binding Similar Items:
ASIN: 1578700418 |
Amazon.com
This all-encompassing TCP/IP text defines completeness with its 1,000-plus pages and hundreds of configuration screens, exercises, charts, tables, and references. Though initially overwhelming, such thoroughness is what's demanded of those who ultimately pass the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) exam, the bruising test for which Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 serves as preparatory material.Such a goal is evidenced in much of the three-part book's design. For example, nearly every chapter includes some combination of recommended readings, review questions, configuration and troubleshooting exercises, case studies, and summaries. In addition, there are numerous appendices devoted to answers to questions and exercise solutions as well as one that outlines exam preparation tips.
Jeff Doyle begins this volume with a review of several basic topics, including a chapter that outlines the parameters of TCP/IP itself. Though some may already be familiar with that material, the sections on dynamic and static routing serve as valuable review material for readers of all levels. The second part deals with TCP/IP interior routing protocols, such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). The book ends on a challenging note with explanations of route redistribution, route filtering, and the like. Routing TCP/IP is required reading for those readers with the ambitious goal to both understand the protocol and excel on the CCIE exam. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
Book Description
A detailed examination of interior routing protocols
CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP, Volume I, takes readers from a basic understanding of routers and routing protocols through a detailed examination of each of the IP interior routing protocols: RIP, RIP2, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, and IS-IS. In addition to specific protocols, important general topics such as redistribution, default routes and on-demand routing, route filtering, and route maps are covered. The book emphasizes techniques for designing networks that efficiently utilize and integrate the IP routing protocols. You will gain a deep understanding of IP routing protocols and learn best-practice techniques for implementing these protocols using Cisco routers. As well, this book will help you master the skills necessary to become an effective CCIE.
Each protocol-specific chapter opens with thorough and lucid coverage of the protocol's capabilities and characteristics. Following sections contain configuration and troubleshooting case studies that cover Cisco specific configuration of the protocol and all commands available for it on the most recent Cisco IOS Software version. Finally, review questions and configuration and troubleshooting exercises on each protocol provide an opportunity to practice for the CCIE exam.
The Cisco effort to facilitate the creation of competent network operations center (NOC) and information systems (IS) staff is exemplified in its CCIE program. To support these efforts, Cisco Press is working closely with CCIE program management to create information products that help build the knowledge and expertise of NOC and IS professionals, as well as provide up-to-date, accurate information on technologies addressed in the CCIE program.
The CCIE Professional Development Series volumes are based on CCIE program guidelines from Cisco. This series is a set of technology-specific volumes designed to meet the needs of CCIE candidates.
This book is part of the Cisco CCIE Professional Development Series from Cisco Press, which offers expert-level instruction on network design, deployment, and support methodologies to help networking professionals manage complex networks and prepare for CCIE exams.

The book is part of a set of two books. TCP/IP Volume 1 contains coverage of the major interior routing protocols (RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF & ISIS) and follows it with coverage of route redistribution, filtering and mapping. TCP/IP Volume 2 covers the BGP exterior gateway protocol and follows it with coverage of advanced IP routing issues. As someone who's come up through the CCNA-to-CCNP-to-CCIE-candidate path, I recognized all of the topics from the BSCI curriculum. All this book really does is takes them to another level of depth. I highly recommend this path of coming at the CCIE, because unless you've done it all and seen it all, there's way too much information to take in during a single reading. Reading the BSCI book first gets you familiar with all of the topics, so that you're not overwhelmed when reading the Doyle books.
While many pan this book as being outdated since it was written in 1998, my contention is that all of the covered topics are still fair game for the CCIE qualifying written exam and the book still retains all of its original value. There are a lot of topics which are on the test which are not in Doyle's books, but if you look at the CCIE blueprint, the topics covered in the books map exactly to the topics in the IP Routing & IP Multicast sections of the blueprint. You can't treat any book as being a one stop shop for CCIE preparation. That's impossible. The book would be the size of my desk. I would actually contend that, on the next rewrite, they should break the 2 volume set into 3 volumes, one for the interior protocols, one for BGP by itself, and one for all of the advanced routing issues and multicast. This would make the volumes a bit less daunting and also somewhat easier to carry.
But, carry-ability issues aside, this is a very good book. It takes all of the topics to the degree of depth which you would expect for a CCIE-level book and explains things in a way that doesn't lose the reader. I had to work to keep the examples straight in my head, but no one said becoming a CCIE was easy. On the downside, the book contains no disc. This is unfortunate, because I always like to have the book on PDF. Also, it would be nice to have the review questions and answers put into a question bank. The book is also missing the "Do I Know This Already" section for each chapter, which is present in all of Cisco Press' certification guides. I realize that this is probably due to the fact that this is more of a desk reference / learning book than an official certification guide. However, as someone who's studying for an exam, I always like as many free practice questions as I can get.
I give Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 a 5 on my 5 ping rating scale and look forward to reading Volume 2.

ASIN: 1565928393 |
Book Description
Reliable, flexible, and configurable enough to solve the mail routing needs of any web site, sendmail has withstood the test of time, but has become no less daunting in its complexity. Even the most experienced system administrators have found it challenging to configure and difficult to understand. For help in unraveling its intricacies, sendmail administrators have turned unanimously to one reliable source--the bat book, or sendmail by Bryan Costales and the creator of sendmail, Eric Allman. Now in its third edition, this best-selling reference will help you master the most demanding version of sendmail yet. The new edition of sendmail has been completely revised to cover sendmail 8.12--a version with more features and fundamental changes than any previous version of the Unix-based email routing program. Because the latest version of sendmail differs so significantly from earlier versions, a massive rewrite of this best-selling reference was called for. The book begins by guiding you through the building and installation of sendmail and its companion programs, such as vacation and makemap. These additional programs are pivotal to sendmail's daily operation. Next, you'll cover the day-to-day administration of sendmail. This section includes two entirely new chapters, "Performance Tuning" to help you make mail delivery as efficient as possible, and "Handling Spam" to deal with sendmail's rich anti-spam features. The next section of the book tackles the sendmail configuration file and debugging. And finally, the book wraps up with five appendices that provide more detail about sendmail than you may ever need. Altogether, versions 8.10 through 8.12 include dozens of new features, options, and macros, and this greatly expanded edition thoroughly addresses each, and provides and advance look at sendmail version 8.13 (expected to be released in 2003). With sendmail, Third Edition in hand, you will be able to configure this challenging but necessary utility for whatever needs your system requires. OSPF: Anatomy of an Internet Routing Protocol
John T. Moy Manufacturer: Addison-Wesley Professional ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0201634724 |
Book Description
Written for TCP/IP network administrators, protocol designers, and network application developers, this book gives the most complete and practical view ever into the inner workings of Internet routing. The book focuses on OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), a common TCP/IP routing protocol that provides robust and efficient routing support in the most demanding Internet environments. A methodical and detailed description of the protocol is offered and OSPF's role within the wider context of a TCP/IP network is demonstrated.Practical throughout, the book provides not only a theoretical description of Internet routing, but also a real-world look into how theory translates into practice. It shows how algorithms are implemented, and how the routing protocols function in a working network where transmission lines and routers routinely break down.
You will find clear explanations of such routing fundamentals as how a router forwards packets, IP addressing, CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing), the routing table, Internet routing architecture, and the two main routing technologies: Distance Vector and link-state algorithms. OSPF is discussed in depth, with an examination of the rationale behind OSPF's design decisions and how it has evolved to keep pace with the rapidly changing Internet environment. OSPF topics covered by the book include the following: OSPF areas and virtual links NBMA (Nonbroadcast multi-access) and Point-to-MultiPoint network segments OSPF configuration and management Interaction with other routing protocols OSPF cryptographic authentication OSPF protocol extensions, including the Demand Circuit extensions and the multicast extensions to OSPF (MOSPF) An OSPF FAQ
IP multicast and multicast routing are also discussed. Methods for debugging routing problems are explained, including a catalog of available debugging tools. The book also offers side-by-side comparisons of all the unicast and multicast routing protocols currently in use in the Internet.
You will come away from this book with a sophisticated understanding of Internet routing and of the OSPF protocol in particular. Moreover, the book's practical focus will enable you to put this deeper understanding to work in your network environment.

Standards-based explanation of OSPF.......2001-04-08
This book gives the networking world a great explanation of how OSPF is designed to work as a standard, not how Cisco implements it (which, by the way, I think they do very well). Not only does Moy explain how OSPF works, but he tells us WHY he decided it should work that way. He also gives a brief history of the early OSPF vs ISIS conflict and OSPF's development process, including what was wrong with OSPF ver1. This book helps spare you from scouring the 1000 or so RFC pages that describe OSPF.
This book is a little pricey, and probably isn't necessary to get OSPF running (read Doyle), but it will deepen your understanding of the protocol and is written in clear, old-fashioned English.
One last thing. Read Jeff Doyle or some other good material on OSPF first, this book will offer you much more if you already understand the protocol to a certain degree.

Book Description
More often than not, the words "sendmail configuration" strike dread in the hearts of sendmail and system administrators--and not without reason. sendmail configuration languages are as complex as any other programming languages, but used much more infrequently--only when sendmail is installed or configured. The average system administrator doesn't get enough practice to truly master this inscrutable technology. Fortunately, there's help. The sendmail Cookbook provides step-by-step solutions for the administrator who needs to solve configuration problems fast. Say you need to configure sendmail to relay mail for your clients without creating an open relay that will be abused by spammers. A recipe in the Cookbook shows you how to do just that. No more wading through pages of dense documentation and tutorials and creating your own custom solution--just go directly to the recipe that addresses your specific problem. Each recipe in the sendmail Cookbook outlines a configuration problem, presents the configuration code that solves that problem, and then explains the code in detail. The discussion of the code is critical because it provides the insight you need to tweak the code for your own circumstances. The sendmail Cookbook begins with an overview of the configuration languages, offering a quick how-to for downloading and compiling the sendmail distribution. Next, you'll find a baseline configuration recipe upon which many of the subsequent configurations, or recipes, in the book are based. Recipes in the following chapters stand on their own and offer solutions for properly configuring important sendmail functions such as:Customer Reviews:

Not for amatuers.......2004-04-30
The first chapter has a lot of very specific fixes for a bunch of operating system specific issues. After that the solutions become a bit more general.
The two standout chapters are chapter four, on relaying, and chapter six on spam filtering. Both of these have great introductions and in-depth techincal descriptions, with effective graphics, covering the topics.
I recommend this book for systems administrators and for people actively using with sendmail.
A Much Easier Way to Handle Sendmail.......2003-12-31
The basic problem is that twenty years of ever increasing complexity in mail handling has created concomitant complexity in sendmail. For system adminstrators, the sendmail configuration files are probably the most complicated things they have to understand and maintain.
The rub is that most sysadmins have many duties, and little time to thoroughly read the above book. What is needed is a crib sheet, that lets you quickly solve very common sendmail configuration issues. Wherein the need for this book. Hunt takes a pragmatic approach. He tells you enough to handle these common issues. Sometimes, this comes at a slight cost. For example, he never really fully explains the the sendmail class notation. For a rigorous explanation, you still need Allman's book. But as a practical matter, you probably not that curious about the notation anyway. Hunt's approach may solve your problems quicker!
An interesting aspect of this Cookbook is that it shows the recent evolution of sendmail, as seen in the subtitle at the top of the cover, "Spam-Fighting". Sysadmins who dealt with sendmail from 5 years ago or earlier will recall nothing pertaining to antispam techniques.
But just as email was the first killer application, the second killer application was the browser, starting in 1992-3. The third killer application was spam, often viewed via the second application. In the last 5 years, spam has grown amazingly. So much so that it has been debated on the floors of the US Parliament! It has gotten to the point that some alarmists are even claiming that this third killer app might be crippling the first app!
Well, this Cookbook has several sections, including an entire chapter, focussed on various antispam techniques, like procmail parsing, or hooking up to Real Time Block Lists like spamhaus.org. The efficacy of such methods may vary widely, but you do get a choice. Though none of these currently appear to offer a truly effective countermeasure. You are still getting tons of spam, aren't you?
Perhaps some genius in the not too distant future can help us!

Don't expect handholding in Cisco Routers for IP Routing as it explains the Internet Protocol (IP) suite and how to implement it with Cisco hardware and software. The key components needed to keep a network online are presented--addressing, subnetting, bridging, and routing--but this book assumes readers are generally familiar with the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command-line environment, so it doesn't spend much time on the early familiarization process. The bulk of each chapter contains practical information for setting up systems and solving problems, including lots of procedures and plenty of illustrative router output, plus insights on good design and administration practice. Readers will also find conceptual, hands-off material explaining what the various protocols do and how they do it.
Cisco Routers for IP Routing is rich in prose and presents complex topics with some fine conceptual diagrams. However, it explains only enough to help you understand the practical material that follows. For a really thorough understanding of IP concepts, supplement this manual with Thomas A. Readers interested in achieving mastery of the Internet Protocol (IP) addressing system and its related protocols should consult the superior information provided in IP Fundamentals.Author Thomas A. Maufer begins with a discussion of the IP numbering system, including excellent coverage of subnetting, supernetting, and the differences between IPv4 and IPv6. The author reveals the intricacies of variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) and classless inter-domain routing (CIDR) before addressing how IP operates in various infrastructures, including Ethernet, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Token Ring, and Frame Relay. In his discussion of IP routing, the author shows how the two versions of Routing Information Protocol (RIPv1 and RIPv2) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) work, both independently and in heterogeneous routing environments.
Maufer strikes a commendable balance between thoroughness and practicality. He makes sure--through liberal use of examples--that you understand everything necessary to complete your job. But he also goes to extraordinary lengths to bolster your grasp of the IP suite; his chapters conclude with fact-rich endnotes, plus references to journal articles and standards documents. In this way, IP Fundamentals helps you surpass mere technical competence to become an IP addressing and routing expert. --David Wall

This will make it easier to understand the IP World........2001-06-10
From the beginning of the book you get topics like IP and IP routing foundations, addressing, subnetting, VLSM, detailed breakdown of the first three layers of the OSI model, Ethernet technologies, token ring and FDDI, PPP and Frame Relay.
The author breaks down routing with RIP and OSPF very well and makes the concepts comprehensible for even the beginner level technician. Also he handles ICMP, 802.1q & p as well as first-rate coverage of DHCP.
The book seems very complete and the author makes sure to include the RFCs that correspond to the different section for the reference purposes. Overall this is one of the best books for IP subject matter.
Very good explanation of concepts. however poor editing.......2001-03-20
If the reader is ready to put in the extra effort and patience to understand these troubled portions of the book, then what he gets is surely worth all the trouble.
The book is one of the best book on IP that I have ever read. It explains in very great details and with amazing simplicity the most cryptic details about CIDR, VLSM and other highly complex topics.
The Chapters are arranged very logically and it almost feels like a continous text. I have decided to give the book 4 stars although it deserves more than 5 stars. I would really advise the publishers to spend some more time on a book to ensure its correctness, before the send the book out to the press.
One last think which I feel is that this book does assumes certain previous knowledge of concepts like ARP and other basic concepts of IP, hence this book should be much more fun and usefull after a reading a primary book on TCP/IP like Douglas Comer or W.R. Stevens.
